Men's Fitness cover features Matt Hughes and Matt Serra

In addition to fighting each other, Matt Hughes and Matt Serra will be facing off against out-of-shape men across the world. Each welterweight was featured in December's issue of Men's Fitness.
The magazine went behind-the-scenes with Welterweight Champion Matt Serra and #1 Contender Matt Hughes to get an idea of how they live and how they train. Practical step-by-step exercises that help get Serra and Hughes into shape are accompanied by the real heat between these two arch-rivals. Check out this lengthy story about what makes these men great rivals and great fighters.
While it probably won't be covering any new ground, it should be interesting to compare and contrast their training styles with a little more depth than we may have seen on The Ultimate Fighter.

GSP said it himself, Matt Serra is underestimated. Serra will probably lose to Hughes but I think it will be via decision, it will go 5 rounds. And I think he will only lose by decision because hughes will spend the majority of the fight on top!

Okay dcsoldier, but the fact remains he is the champ… and he beat one of the most well-rounded fighters in the entire sport of MMA via TKO.
Give the man some respect!

So wait… Serra who has been fighting in UFC for years!! Wen’t through and WON TUF4, then beat GSP who was/is easily the best WW and won the Belt…
weather or not that compares to YOUR “im sure” glorious fighting career, he still won the belt, and had to go through 4 or 5 fights to get it so don’t talk out of ya hole you muppet!

I would have to agree that Serra is underestimated… that was clear in the fight with GSP. The whole thing didn’t seem real to me when it was happening.
Anyway. Yes, Serra is the champ and Yes, he beat my all time favorite WW. and Yes, the guy does seem to be a good coach (except when it came to one of his own on TUF) BUT, I don’t think I’ve see one show, interview, fight, etc… where I heard him open his mouth that I gained any respect for the guy. He is just an A—hole.

I agree. I want to see GSP avenge his loss. We all already know that GSP can demolish Hughes so let’s break some new ground.
The ideal scenario:
Serra finds a way to beat Hughes in December and GSP avenges his loss by beating Serra in Montreal (perhaps April?) and becoming the WW champion once again.
Then we’ll all party in Montreal with those awesome Montreal women.

It’s true.. I don’t think Serra is AMAZING per say but you don’t beat GSP ever by being sucking at what you do!
I think Serra’s ego is starting to catch up to Hughes and he is becoming ever so slightly a bit of a cock too… Probably based on his last year or so of success
What a shame tho, this now means we have two cocks fighting eachother in December… and the UFC is trying to prove to the world this isn’t human cock fighting in a cage

The fight Hughes had with Chris Lytle was pretty shite. Serra has a good chance of beating Hughes, and an even better chance of knocking him out if Hughes tries to stand with him. Serra’s stand up is underestimated, check out the Karo fight. I hope he does knock him out.

I agree with you 100%, Reldeed. Everytime Serra says something bad about Matt Hughes it makes me dislike him even more. Everytime Hughes justs sits back and takes the abuse makes me respect him that much more. It takes a mentally tough person to not retaliate. It would be different if Serra has proven him self in the UFC but he hasn’t. Don’t get me wrong I know he beat GSP and that is very impressive in itself. The problem is that is only one fight. When he deffends his belt 3 – 4 more times against very stiff competition I will come back on this site and applaud his efforts. I gaurantee that I will not change my oppinoin of him. He will always be a bum in my book. He does not deserve the belt because of his actions.
Maybe I am way off about Matt Serra. I know we only see a little bit of what is going on but from every interview that he has done to the things said on TUF 6. I have no repsect for him as a person or a fighter. For all of you that want to say that what you do in the Octagon has nothing to do with what you do outside is bogus. It has everything to do with it. These guys are professionals so they should act like it.

Nice to see the UFC on the cover of a fairly mainstream magazine. And I think this will put some of those “Matt Serra’s fat” comments in perspective. He doesn’t look like Sean Sherk, but he doesn’t look like most of us pudgy desk monkeys either. Good exposure for the sport.

Dude what Serra does is just silly trash talk, what Hughes says about Serra is completely disrespectful. Hughes wont make fun of Serra true, but he will say things on National TV like: “Serra got lucky”, “Serra is not Top 10”, “Serra doesn’t deserve the belt”. Giving him absolutely no credibility for defeating GSP fair and square. Saying these things is so much more disrespectful, and to top it off Hughes seems like the better man because he doesn’t make fun or talk shit. Serra is just a New Yorker, and most New Yorker’s Ive met are extremely sarcastic and probably the best trash talkers in the world. But I have never heard Serra disrespect Hughes as a professional fighter, he never goes there. Hughes has got to learn how to take a joke, and perhaps joke back a little. Instead of disrespecting another person as a fighter, especially since that other fighter happens to BE the champ, and he became the champ by knocking out the fighter that knocked Hughes out.

Not only has Hughes been a dick on this season of TUF, he was also a total a$$hole to Serra when he was competing on TUF#?. Matt Hughes reminds me of all the guys I hated in high school (not a surprise considering I went to high school in Bettendorf IA). It is a shame when a fighter as notable as Matt Hughes brings that mentality and lack of respect to the mainstream forefront (highly rated cable TV series) of the MMA world. Of course I understand the fact that they have to hype the fight, there has to be some kind of controversy, something to talk about, but I tend to think that Matt Serra is accomplishing the same task in a far more professional manner.
I have to pick Hughes to win though, I know he will bring it this fight for sure. He is a damn good Mixed Martial Artist. Can Serra pull it off? Hell yes he can, anyone who counts him out is a fool.

True, Serra was upset by Royce’s loss to Hughes. Howeer, what upset him the most was the lack of respect that was shown to Royce.
Lets be honest, Royce never had the upper hand in that fight, he was completely handled. Even if it had been a no gi grappling match Hughes would have been dominant.
Bottom line is that Matt Hughes is a arrogant SOB who can really kick some ass when he isn’t in the cage with GSP.

Well Hughes said what every intelligent mma fan already thinks, gsp beats serra 9 times out of 10 and he isn’t in the top 10, facts people, not trash talk just the facts. Serra’s freak win doesn’t impress me or any intelligent fan of mma and Hughes is just saying it like it is. Serra is proving to be very immature and the fact hughes doesn’t give it right back just proves his maturity…..haters, hughes is by far the bigger man in every way. In a perfect world I would love to see hughes beat the crap out of serra, and beat him in a humiliating fashion like submitting him in the second round. Then move up to middle weight and pound out silva in the first round(very far fetched I know but this would be awsome to see) then retire(holding both the welter and middle weight belt). The ufc would then have a vacant 2 vacant belts and for the welter weight title I would love to see gsp fight serra and brutally tko him in the first. Then for the middle weight title gsp and silva go at it and gsp beat him in the second round by ko, that would make my year, gsp to hold both titles in welter and middle weight, but pretty unlikely, silva is a monster, just he way I would like it to go down.

Serra can pull off the upset against Hughes. Anyone can win at any time in this sport. The fact of the matter is that Serra got lucky in his fight against GSP. There is no doubt in most peoples minds that GSP would win 9 out of 10 against Serra. It just so happened that this was the 1 time.
As for professionalism. How can you say that Matt Serra is more professional than Matt Hughes. That is probably the most ludacris statement I have ever heard. Think about this logically if you would for one minute. When you watch the hype up to fights that they have on fight night. What do you see. Guys calling their opponent an ass hole, making fun of his religion, how he fights, well lets just say making fun of him in general. No you hear them say things like. That guy shouldn’t be in the same ring as me, I am going to destroy him, and yes occasionally you will hear a fighter say something like he got lucky in his last fight. So if Hughes is more disrespectful then I guess all the fighters in the UFC should take a page out of Matt Serras book.
If you want to tell me that he is joking around then again you are crazy. I don’t remember a time where Serra has said I just like playing with the guy. I actually really kind of like him that is why I pick on him. No he says I hate that guy, I can’t stand him, he is a prick. Now that kind of stuff doesn’t bother me as much as making fun of the mans integrity, his religion, and how he lives his life. That is childish and very unprofessional.

There is no doubt that Serra came in with a game plan against GSP. It seemed as if GSP came in thinking he was going to walk through Serra. We know from tons of experience in the past year that you cannot under any circumstance under estimate your opponent. Griffin vs. Shogun is a great example. But giving Matt Serra a ton of credit for winning TUF 4 and beating GSP is crazy. I mean before TUF 4 Serra hadn’t beat anyone with a big name. He lost to Shonie Carter, BJ Penn, Din Thomas, and Karo. He is 6 – 4 in the UFC which is not an unbelievable record.
I am not sure about this comment, “So you guys can just sit there with your jaws open, wondering how a black belt in bjj, MMA veteran, owner of one of the best gi and no-go grappling schools on the east coast, could ever beat the god of 170, Matt Hughes.”
We have seen major upsets in the past year. If Serra beats Hughes it really won’t come as to much of a shock. Now if this fight would have happened 10 months ago I would have said yes. It is happening now after the year of the upset. As for wondering how a black belt in bjj could beat someone is a crazy comment. Do you think that Matt Serra is the only Black Belt in BJJ in the UFC or maybe you think he is only one who wins. Also when he beat GSP I didn’t see him use his BJJ but that is just me.
As for the Ravens comment I am not sure what that means. Please explain.

“hope Serra does the EXACT same thing to Hughes as he did GSP.
So you guys can just sit there with your jaws open, wondering how a black belt in bjj, MMA veteran, owner of one of the best gi and no-go grappling schools on the east coast, could ever beat the god of 170, Matt Hughes. You guys make it seem like Matt Serra didn’t have a plan against GSP, and went in sloppy throwing over hand rights and hay-makers.
Give me a freaken break people, respect all the fighters, even the ones you see on TV.
Top 5 in any order should always include Serra and Hughes (Right now, and probably through next year), if you think otherwise, maybe you should go call plays against the Ravens in the NFL, cause you’re freaken blind!"
royce gracie is a bjj black belt dumb ass, and so was carlos newton, like it helped them any. Serra’s plan was to trade blow for blow, he knew it was his only chance and it worked, he knew he really only had a punchers chance and hit the jack pot. His unintentional, yes UNINTENTIONAL hit to the back of the head really hurt gsp which made serra’s follow up shots possible. The hit was unintentional because serra knows hits to the back of the head are ILLEGAL, he hit him with his left forearm as gsp ducked in to it, anyone thinks that hit was intended to hit were it did is a moron, it literally was a one in a million hit, NEVER would happen again. All the dummies on serra’s band wangon should watch tapes of his illustrious career for a reality check, the guy SUCKS pure and simple. Dec 29 can’t come fast enough for me to put this lamo were he belongs, the guy isn’t top 15 for gods sake PEOPLE WAKE UP!!!!!!!!
