UFC 81: Tyson Griffin vs. Gleison Tibau

ufc 81 tyson griffin vs gleison tibau
Lightweight Tyson Griffin (10-1) is penciled in to return against Gleison Tibau (15-4) at UFC 81 on February 2 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to FightNetwork.com.

The 155-pound clash joins the recently announced heavyweight bout between Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir at the SuperBowl weekend pay-per-view (PPV) event.

Griffin has been involved in some amazing scraps his last three times out -- all of which earned the designation "Fight of the Night" on their respective cards. He most recently outworked an extremely game Thiago Tavares at UFC 76: "Knockout" en route to a unanimous decision win.

His only career loss is to Frank Edgar at UFC 67: "All or Nothing" earlier this year.

Tibau has flown relatively low under the radar despite stringing together four wins since a technical knockout loss to Nick Diaz in his Octagon debut in November 2006. Three of those four wins have come inside the eight-sided cage.

Both fighters are very good on the ground -- Griffin with his wrestling and Tibau with his Brazilian jiu-jitsu. It should be a highly technical showdown.

Quick site note: I'm tied up this week for the better part of the day up until Thursday. This is the first time I really checked in since last night. Jesse has picked up the slack and will continue to do so for the next two days during daylight hours. Give him hell.

Isn’t the name of this fight also the start of “Rock of Ages” by Def Leppard?

Tyson earned my respect after he shut down Thaigo. Fight of the night his last three fights? He’s a beast. Non stop action that fight, glad I was there. Serve him up Tyson.

I might have to put money on this fight. Tibau has all the skills it takes to beat Tyson. His wrestling is probably stronger than Tyson’s and his stand up and BJJ are probably even. Tibau is a sleeper IMO. Way more technical than Tyson and just as strong

Tyson won the fight with Tavares fair and square. Griffin kicked his ass in the compustrike numbers, and I had him winning that fight even without knowing the numbers.

I think it should of been KenFlo as well. Then have a little bracket with Kenflo vs. Griffin fight the winner of Edgar/Fisher, then of course winner fights Sherk/Daddy/BJ.

Melvin? lol. He is fighting Rich Clementi at UFC 79..

Melvin would get beat in 2 minutes against Tyson.

Under the Radar is right… what does this fight do for Griffin? Griffin took out a contender in Tarvares with the greatest of ease… Hopefully see he will go after some other prime fighters, or maybe a rematch with Frankie…

It’s prob cos of the whole Sherk roid thing and basically static LW division

It’s time to give Tyson a name fighter so he can be next in line for a title shot. He’s proven he deserves one by now and he would have a stellar match with BJ or Stevenson(only a beat down to Sherk would prove interesting, a la GSP). He should get the loser of BJ/Stevenson and provided that he wins, a title shot.

Added to the fact that he just lost to Edgar 9months-ish ago… but Edgar (atleast I think) is one of the more dangerous fighter in the sickly deep 155lb division. But Tyson absolutely outfought Tavares.. which no one has done before.

The reason he got fight of the night three times in a row is becuase he got his ass kicked three times in a row. Clay Guida BEAT Griffin. I don’t care what anyone says. I admit that he did eek out the decision against Tavarez, and I was rooting for Tavarez.

good fight should be easy win for griffin, i thought he might fight someone more higher up the ladder than tibau

I agree Tyson is going to be a fighter to watch and in my opinion is going to deserve a title shot.
