UFC Quick Quote: We still haven't seen the best Wanderlei Silva

wanderlei silva

"... I train hard and I hunger because I want to come back to the top and fight with Chuck. Now is at the best moment to me. And I want to give a good show, the biggest, and fight for my fans everywhere.... Now, maybe in the next years I'm going to come back to the top. I want to have a good one year and I think maybe in two years I'm going to give you the best years in my career."

-- Former PRIDE FC champion and current UFC light heavyweight fighter Wanderlei Silva tells InsideFighting.com that he expects to perform at an all-time best in the next two years. It's crazy to think that at 31 years young -- and his storied career thus far -- that he still has so much more time to fight. "The Axe Murderer" will face his first test since losing back-to-back bouts when he returns to the Octagon to face Chuck Liddell at UFC 79: "Nemesis" on December 29.

He should be ready. He’s one of only a handfull of fighters that gets paid enough to train full-time. Most UFC fighters get paid so little that they have to have a second job.

is that english??? chuck will win if wandy forces the issue and comes at chuck. if he doesn’t, fight will not be as exciting, but wandy prob wins.

Hey Mania, just thought I’d let you know, even though it has nothing to do with the topic here, that Yushin Okami is no longer under contract with the UFC. His last fight was against Jason Macdonald. He is also scheduled to fight Dong Sik Yoon at K-1 New Years event. I’m not sure about the confirmation however.

I do have a site…

this guy is a bad asssssss…i think the break will have done his body well…he needed it…i don’t see good things for chuck…BUT…chuck has the one thing most fighters don’t have…a single punch can drop people…those long thin arms with strong shoulders…those dudes can punch! …just like kelly pavlik…long arms, bigger shoulders (for his size)…those dudes are dangerous…maybe they don’t look it but the proof is in the results…they can turn those arms into human-sling-shots…nighty night…but i’ll put my green stuff on wanderlei…see ya

Why don’t you cry about minor league baseball players or those low-level arena football players who make about $250 a game too? They’re all professional athletes who can’t sustain themselves on their sports salaries. Dana pays the fighters what they’re worth. Sponsors make up the rest. If they aren’t good enough to get sponsorships or get onto the main cards of PPV events then they need to rethink their career choice. They aren’t entitled to a life of wealth and luxury as a professional athlete just because they want one. It has to be earned, and some people just aren’t good enough.

The fighters who are getting a lot have already paid their dues. The ones who getting paid a lot were probably in the same situation when they first started in MMA. I’m sure Wandy was paid jack shit when he was fighting in Brazillian Vale Tudo and IVC.

by Shad-Fu on Nov 5, 2007 3:49 PM EST reply actions

agreed fighters that are signed by the UFC should be able to train full time and be paid accordingly. You want the best fights Dana? Pay these guys so that they can concentrate on fighting and nothing but. They don’t need luxury and wealth, just food in the fridge, the rent paid and the wife and kids are happy.

Plus the Axe Murderer will ko No Luck Chuck and hopefully we never have to see him fight again. I never liked Chuck. Too one dimensional. Everyone thought that he was this unstoppable machine. He did knock Couture out twice but all his fights were against BJJ or
GNP guys. I always said “wait until he fights another good striker.” and then Rampage knocked his mohawked ass out in under 2 minutes. Then another striker, Jardine, kicks his mohawked ass around the ring for 15 minutes. Chuck never changes his training for individuals and never looks to add anything to his game. Those days are over Chuck. Time to catch up with what is going on in MMA. It’s come a long way and you need to learn a few things. Wanderlei is the much superior fighter in all around skill. Standing up or on the ground he has the skills to whoop Chuck and hopefully will.

And try as they might, a lot of fighters are not good enough to warrant that kind of money. A guy who gets drafted in the 30th round of the baseball draft is not going to make enough money to live on. He either gets better and progresses through the minor league system and better money and moves toward the major leagues and the huge money or he gets a real job. It’s pretty simple economics.

Good for Dong Sik Yoon. I remember watching him fight Melvin Manhoef in K1 Heroes, the same night that Brock Lesnar made his debut. He was 0-4 at the time, but only fought TOP competition. The best 0-4 fighter ever. He was a big under dog against Melvin, and he pulled off the upset win with an armbar. This guy has tons of heart, he was taking a BEATING. I just looked him up, and he has won his last 2 fights in K1 Heroes by armbar in the first round. Hey, if you find a move that works, stick with it!

Im sure Rampage would love too fight Silva again.. Ive actually heard him say it a few times ..

Also his last loss too Silva was 3 years ago ( 10-31-04 ) and alot of things have changed .. Rampage has got alot better trainers since then and Wandy has back too back ko losses ..

Not too mention Rampage has won his last 6 fights with wins over Lindland , Liddell and Henderson ..

Rampage would beat Wandy easily imho.

by Dayzah on Nov 5, 2007 4:09 PM EST reply actions

I’ve been a long time Chuck fan.. but i think Wandy’s got this shit in the bag. chucks chin has been exposed highly 2 times in the last 2 fights. I mean the Hendo KO of Wandy was nice but it was a solid shot. Both of Chucks knock downs were arm punches (Jardine’s was questionable) but none the less I think Wandy is gonna be mince meet of Chuck if hes tentative like the last 2 fights.

on another note I think Wandy and Rampage would be a great fight. Rampage is out to revenge that loss and man that would be a great fight. Rampage via KO 3rd round or decision. Hard to call that one. if Rampage fails to get the KO then decision is my call, but I’m Rampage all the way.

by KO KING on Nov 5, 2007 4:21 PM EST reply actions

F*ck Chuck, Wandy!! Chuck is done. He needs significant improvement in his game if he wants to dominate the division at the current state.

Wandy on the other hand is a question mark. He looked terrible against Hendo on his last outing, but he had the flu. We’ll see if he’s over the hill or not! I’m quite concerned over the integrity of his chin, though – something Chuck would love to exploit come fight time.

I’d say 60/40 Wandy over Chuck.

Dude, Rampage already said that he wants to avenge all of his Pride losses (wanderlei, shogun, too bad he probably wont get to fight Sakuraba). So stop making stuff up.

If what wanderlei says is true, us fans are in for a real treat. They dont call that man the axe murderer for nothing. He is a stone cold killer. If he is gonna get back to the top of the mma world he will have to learn to fight more dicaplined. He cant just come out gunz blazing the entire time. He is gonna have to pick and choose when to unleash that storm of punches. Wanderlei silva is one of the top 5 champions of all time, and he is still only 31 years old. Of course I believe he can make it back to the top, but it wont be easy. Wanderlei is a nasty striker, he has a great clinch game, he is a black belt in ju jitsu, and he has the advantage over other PRIDE guys because he has already had 2 fights in the octagon. I would like to see wanderlei fight with a gameplan, like randy, instead of just coming out in trying to punch your head off or knee your face in.

about 40 days till the axe murderer returns to the octagon… I am getting goose bumps just thinking about it. If he fights under control, he will beat chuck. Chuck will not beat a top 5 fighter again until he expands his arsenal.

I will be betting on the axe murderer against the iceman. Both fighters are comming off of 2 losses, but they have been dying to fight each other for the last 5 years. They will both be super motivated and come out real hungry for a win.

And the winner is…….. The fans….halleluja, I have been waiting for so long to see this.

Keep your fingers crossed that either one doesn’t have to pull out of the fight due to injury!!!!!! How much would that suck?

Exactly. The first lost was to Cro Cop (a heaveyweight) in the tournament at Pride. Wandy has only lost once in his weight division in a very long time. Not only is Wandy going to beat Chuck up…. he is gonna Fatality him by ripping his head off and taking his soul.

He’ll stand in the middle of the cage and say…..

“Your soul is MIIINNNEEEEEEEEEE”

Great post Johh, but a quick correction, Wanderlei has had 3 fights in the octagon. EVERYONE remembers Wandy getting KO’d by Vitor Belfort, and everyone knows that Tito beat him via decision. But often times, people forget about his fight against the infamous Tony Petarra (spelling?). This is the fight where the US fans got to see Wanderlei’s clinch game. He KO’d him out cold with knees to the dome, as if he was Rampage Jackson 3 years ago.

wandy is the man but this is the worst match up possible for him.

by hinessight2020 on Nov 5, 2007 4:50 PM EST reply actions

I thought that Wandy was pretty smart against Mark Hunt. This is gonna be a really good fight. Chuck’s problem is that he’s never changed his style. People see it and know exactly what he’s going to do, so every fight gets easier and easier. I like how GSP completely changed his style when fighting Koscheck. Couture is good at not being easy to read. It doesn’t matter though, I want Wandi to win in graphic Wandi fashion. People who claim to know make themselves look like a Horses ass.

by dave on Nov 5, 2007 5:06 PM EST reply actions

Silva is at his best when he’s going forward with relentless offense BUT Chuck is at his best when he is counter punching, so this might give Wandy some problems. The other problem is that Wandy cuts easily and his eyes swell very fast. There is no doubt in my mind that Chuck will conect at least a few times, and those few shots might end the fight in a flash KO or a bad cut.
But i’m still rooting for my boy Silva!

Chuck has lost to two fighters, one of which isnt even top tier, and has changed nothing, I don’t think he will contend with the best anymore, which is why I would rather see Wandi win, much more possibilities for him to. Wandi only lost to arguably the greatest HW striker, and then was deathly sick when he fought Hendo, there is no evidance that Wandi is not top tier anymore.

ViolentMike: thanks for the correction buddy, I actually knew nothing of the 3rd fight that you were talking about. Since it occured in the pre-zuffa years and it isn’t out on dvd in the USA, how can I see it. I checked on dailymotion.com but its not on there either? This is the one fight, maybe the last one, that Chuck will be up and ready for. Wanderlei comes straight ahead and doesn’t make any bones about the fact that he wants to go toe-to-toe and just trade punches. He’s tailor made for Chuck. At the end of the night Chuck is going to standing over Wandy yelling, “You got knocked the fuck out!” while the Chute-Boxe Team will be telling Wandy, “You should have been bobbing and weaving!” Just like Deebo!

You’re right, but his last two KO’s were very bad ones where he was completely put to sleep. KO’s like these can really hurt a fighter’s longevity.

Bad idea for him to go through with the fight against Hendo as his sickness attributed a great deal to the last KO, which in turn will have a good chance of affecting his ability to take a shot and recover from it – possibly for the rest of his career. I really hope it doesn’t.

Wanderlei is Rampage’s cryptonite, if he goes out there and destroys chuck (and that’s what I’m predicting) then we’re going to see just how much Rampage has actually improved since his hot streak in the UFC began. Wanderlei vs Rampage 3 is a fight that will definately be up in the air… no predictions on that fight from me.

Both fighters are great, and anytime someone loses, then the garbage goes on by calling them washed up. No one looks at their past fights. The fighters both of these men and beating badly. Fighters many didn’t think the could beat, and they proved their worth time and time again. So next time you want to bash. Think about how many times you have fallen, or failed at something. If your car works perfectly for 10 years, then stops working twice, is that car now complete garbage? Both Chuck and Silva are still the best of the best!

I actually think Chuck is going to win this one. I personally do not believe Chuck was in the right frame of mind fighting Jardine and it showed. Sluggish, one dimensional and not motivated enough. Lets not forget this guy knocked Randy Couture out twice, yep twice, who else has done that even once!!!

Randy then went on to beat the man who beat CroCop who incidentally destroyed Silva. So, anything can happen if Chuck takes this fight more seriously (which I think he will) and we know that Silva can get knocked out as well.

I believe Chuck (hopefully the old one) by knockout in Round 2.

As stated in his site (wandy’s) he summoned three trainers from Brazil (not from CB), I’m not sure what he is thinking but he should go back to chute boxe, since he is not training with anyone from couture’s gym, he is just using his gym to train.

last time they fought it was Halloween and I missed the the Live card. And I went 2 days trying not to find out what happend untill I got a copy. Finally I got to see it(BTW, I am a Page fan.) It ended the same way as the 1st time. Except this time Page got KO’d and fell through the ropes.. It took about 2or3 fights to get back to the old Rampage we all know(he just looked different after)
Wanerlei puts a look in Page’s eyes that ppl rarely see. I hope they meet agian… I am also a big Wandy fan but I would still route for the same guy I did in fight 1and2…Rampage.

Keep in mind the day before Wandy lost to Hendo Wandy was in the hospital sick as a dog and he also lost to cro cop who is a heavy weight. So you also have to think Hendo didn’t get destroyed by Rampage and he didn’t beat a 100% Silva either. The question is could Rampage or Hendo be able to beat a 100% Wanderlei Silva.

Don’t forget Silva has beaten Rampage twice. At the end of their first match Silva delivered 17 consecutive knees to Rampage’s head causing the fight to be stopped and at the end of their second encounter Rampage got KO-ed cold by a punch and ended up hanging from the bottom rope. You have to see those KO-s to see how brutal they are.

I’m a Pride fan – I say Silva KO-s Liddel via knees round 1.
