Gabriel Gonzaga: The forgotten heavyweight contender?

Props: Boston Herald
Quoteworthy:
"He [Gabriel Gonzaga] is still one of the top contenders and he's going to come back strong. If he wins the next fight I believe he'll be the top contender."
Marco Alvan -- the head trainer for Team Link and UFC heavyweight Gabriel Gonzaga -- contends that his fighter will earn a place at the front of the title challenger line with a win over Fabricio Werdum at UFC 80 in January. "Napao" lost to division champion Randy Couture at UFC 74: "Respect" in August via third-round technical knockout. With the future of "The Natural" now in doubt Gonzaga should be considered (he seems to have been lost in the shuffle) among those to fight for a potential vacant title alongside Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Tim Sylvia and Cheick Kongo. It'd be nice to match 'em up and let the winners clash for the belt. That scenario, however, will more than likely not happen.

Vera vs. Congo

Sorry but a win over fabricio Werdum, does not earn you a title shot. Who has werdum beaten in the UFCF, that would make a win against him mean anything? His UFC highlight is bitch slapping arlovski.
The fights I would like to see are:
Kongo vs. Big Tim
Gonzaga vs. Noguerra
Arlovski vs. Verra

Gonzaga is not forgotten, but after being dominated in his last fight, he need to win a big fight to stay on the map. If he looses his next one to a contender, he will be down to fighting people like Hardonk or Welsch…you know the “top tear” Arlovski vs Kongo sounds good.

Gonzaga will be champ soon, the only guy i see giving him a lot of trouble are guys like Tim Sylvia.
And LOL at Werdum beating him, back then GG had no striking, weighed 20lbs less, and took the fight on late notice. And GG still pwned him on the ground and almost subbed him. Werdum’s only real chance of winning is a sub on the ground, which I don’t see happening.

gonzaga is a good fighter but there are alot of holes in his game he should fix..
1) cardio-> tends to gas in later rounds
2) agressiveness-> he picks his shots to much, with his raw talent and abilty he should press the action more..im shure if he does this he could overwhelm 90% of the fighters in his weight class
3) heart-> this one you cant teach..i think when he is put in a tight spot he tends to curl and fold

Gonzaga has a very good chance of being top tier in UFC.
Let’s not forget Randy was handed a gift in the fact that he broke Gonzaga’s nose ACCIDENTALLY with his head on a takedown, NOT a strike. this filled GG’s eyes with blood and made breathing so much harder. Had this not happened things COULD have been different. GG was rocking Randy when they were apart hence Randy holding onto him so much. And yes I know that’s how Randy fights etc etc and Yes Randy is great.
GG will kick some more ass in the UFC

Sorry, Congo vs. Arlovski
Personally, I want to see kongo fight Big Tim. Kongo is a nasty striker who 99% of the time fights with a reach and size advantage over his opponents. As does Tim. I would like to see those 2 striking Giants battle it out, and I think Kongo could KO big Tim which would be soooooooo great to see.
Tim doesnt have the super reach and size that he usually does if he were to fight Kongo, and I do not think Tim is a better striker thten Kongo, so It would be fun to see Tim get kicked in the face.
Gonzaga is not ready to win and DEFEND the HW title. In about a year and a half after gaining more experience, he should be ready.
He should have learned alot about what a champion fights like, when he fought Randy.
He will be ready one day, I dont think heis time has come yet.

Imo, Gonzaga would be the champion right if it wasn’t for that nose fracture he got from a headbutt during Couture’s takedown. Try breathing with that. Try taking a hit in the face with that. But still, he managed to break Couture’s arm with a nasty kick.
Neverthless, Couture impresses the hell out of me.

I think Gabriel Gonzaga is the best heavyweight in the UFC right now.
I think he is more deserving of the title shot than both Tim Slyvia and Big Nog.
Slyvia had a great win over Brandon Vera, but if AA is not in the UFC because of his boring fights, then why is Big Tim in the UFC fighting?
I think when Napao wins I think he should have to fight Chieck and the winner of that fights Slyvia/Big Nog.
I would like to see Brad Imes come back into the UFC, he has been on a tear lately, last two wins both by gogoplata.
No I am not saying Brad Imes is a heavyweight contender, I am just saying that to add more depth it would be nice to add him again
Too bad The Headhunter is fighting for Strikeforce, I never knew why the UFC let him go.

I so agree, I was watching the UFC when it was 29.99 then all of sudden they jump it to 39.99 and since have stopped showing the undercards when the fights end early, you pay for 3 1/2 hours and usually get 2 3/4 hours of fights. They are pissing off their followers, I am hoping M-1 puts on a good first show, I am hoping they fill the void left from the UFC buying Pride and raping it and then letting it die.

I agree 110%.Gonzaga is a good fighter but the only reason he has name is because of the Cro Cop fight. What I found funny was the promo for UFC 74 advertised Gonzaga as the man who ko’d Cro Cop.In that promo they mentioned Mirko more than they did Gonzaga.

I think Gonzaga is tough enough, he got a accidental busted nose with Couture fight, couldnt breath through it, lost his cardio but still hung in there tough and didn’t quit, if that didn’t happen he would have given Couture a much tougher fight. Gonzaga is well rounded and impresses me as someone at 29yrs of age will only get better, I believe he will beat anyone they put in front of him, except Couture.

IFL was on last night, Horedecki fought Bartimus and Vlady fought Alex Shoenauer, you’ve got the TUF show, which shows a fight a week, you’ve got UFC unleashed and Wreckage, plus the Tapout show, you’ve got Pride Fighting Championships on FoxSports…..that’s not enough MMA to hold you over until the PPV card each month? Damn bro…
And to get back on topic, Gabe beating Werdum (It’s gonna happen) doesn’t mean jack squat to most people….Gonzaga needs to fight a guy like Fat Timmy or Big Nog, hell even Vera, to get back into title contention….Anyone else, even Kongo for that matter, doesn’t qualify as a win worthy of a title shot.

Are you kidding? GG is one of the most well rounded (if not the most well rounded) HW. He is a HUGE THREAT to any HW. He will be champion soon. He is the only one who will get by big Tim too. I like Randy, but without the accidental headbut, GG more than likely would have KOed him.

I think Vitor Belfort is a Light Heavyweight, and he is no way in hell a first tier fighter. He would be in the 3rd tier rated fighter, with Frank Mir, Brock Lesnar, Jeff Monson.
Brad Imes has improved greatly and I might consider moving him into the second tier fighters, but that is just because he has fought nobodies and has looked incredible.
Nog would have to be in the first class. He is fighting for the title as well.
Heath Herring is also another 3rd rate fighter.

Would be a close fight but hes just as good if not better than Arlovski now. Much better all rounded fighter. WTF – what makes you think GG’s striking is on par with Arlovski ?!! i take it you didnt see GG V Kevin jordan – he was crap – a poor striker. Arlovski ends fights with his hands and nobody has ever over powered him in a grapple ! and me not ready to accept ?…. he got lucky over crocop and it simply showed against randy (who got Ko’d twice by a LHW) Randy even overpowered him, GG is not top 5 – he’s gonna need to beat a UFC vet, not a pride vet to be considered hot in the UFC (by hardcore MMA fans standards)

Vitor Belfort as a Top Tier Contender to the UFC HW belt?? WHAT!
Also, please take Mark Hunt off of that list. Even if he was in the UFC, he would not be a Top Tier contender. He is a kickboxer, and that is it, and a fat one at that.
You have Big Nog as a 2nd Tier Contender??? WTF You think that Mark Hunt and the current Vitor are better than Big Nog. You are insane! Big Nog is the man. Pehaps you never seen him in PRIDE, and only saw his one UFC fight. He is 30 and 4, fighting the best HW’s in the world. He has NEVER been finished (KO’d or sub’d) in a fight. His 4 losses were all decisions, 2 of them were split decsions, and the other 2 were unanimous to Fedor. Big Nog is as Top Tier as you can get in the HW division!

Whatthe hell would you wanna see Vera vs Kongo for? wouldn’t it be the same as Vera vs. BigTim. Dont get me wrong Verra is talented and skilled, but lets be real he is smaller than Forrest and he fights at Heavyweight. You wantto put him in there against another Giant Striker? for what? I dont see Vera defeating Heavyweights strikers with such a huge weight, height and Reach advantage. I would much prefer to see Vera fight Werdum, cro cop. Lets be honest Vera is gonna have to either put on some weight or cut down to 205 because I dont see how he will compete against REAL well rounded HW like Gonzaga, Arlovski, Big Tim, Kongo, Randy
Brock Lesnar is a novice to mma, but he could take Vera down at will. Vera needs to make a decision about what weight class he wants to fight at. He says Heavyweight, well than commit to it, put on some damn muscle, I am 6’2 and about 225 and I look much bigger than him. I think he has what it takes to fight at heavyweight,m but he needs to put on weight to be a serious threat to the title.

I am very familar with both promotions. And I have to say I really miss PrideFc events, and am sad to know they will not have any more shows.
As for your question"free tickets’
I would also take the Pride tickets. Pride puts on a very exciting show, with tornaments(open weight), and full combat with kicks and knees to downed opponants(-elbows). It brings a fast pace to a 10min long 1st round.
Plus I would get a free trip to Japan.
But same as you I love the UFC.
I also enjoy watching EliteXC, they put on a good show and
promote some very talented fighters.
especially Nick Diaz and Jake Sheilds..They are both fighting on Nov/10th..With Diaz fighting for the LW title, should be a great night of fights and I encourage any MMA fan to watch.

John, I too would take the PRIDE tickets. First off, I’d see more fights, like 11. The atmosphere is second to none. I want to hear that announcer lady announce someone live. I want the 10 minute first round. I want no Herb Dean. I want kicks to the head of a downed opponent. I want to sit with fans that understand that MMA is much more than standing and punching. I would like to see Japan, if its free. I want to see the Introduction Cermonies and sit so close that my eye brows get slighly burned. I want….. PRIDE!!!!!!!!
Stagger-Lee, we are one of the few that watch every EliteXC event. Although, I will admit that I did not order the PPV, but I watched the free replay the following week. Now that they signed Nick Diaz to a longer contract, I WILL be ordering their PPV’s if he is on them. The only thing I HATE about EliteXC is Gary Shaw and the fact that he wants like 18 different weight classes. Also, did anyone watch Chris Horodecki vs Bart Powershevski (I know that’s now how its spelled, but it sure is how it sounds).

And to add to my last post…
I want to see tournaments. And I want to see more than one Big Name Fighter per card.

Agree, more than one big name.
To me, the one deciding factor is the crowds. UFC crowds, always pissin me off. Just SHUT, UP!!!

Couture won on the fact that he accidently broke GGs nose with his head. Before that he couldnt get close to GG. Arlovski would get KOd or submitted by Gonzaga. Face it, Arlovski is nowhere near as good as he once was. Gonzaga has also won fights with his fists, feet and submission
