Ultimate Fighter 6: Episode 7 recap and discussion

By Jesse Holland

Episode 7 gets underway with a recap from last week's war between Dan and Ben and ironically the highlights far surpass any of the actual fights from episodes 1-5. Dan admits to having wax in his ears and now also has a bratwurst under his eye.

Back in the locker room Coach Hughes has steam coming out of his ears and yearns to unleash his fury on the contestants. He's dissatisfied with his team's inability to listen or follow direction. Unfortunately Matt forgot the first lesson of leadership: Everything is your fault.

Dana swoops in to try and raise Hughes spirits by speaking his language: "Have a come to Jesus meeting with them".

It seems that aside from being a carpenter and a messiah Jesus was also a bitter MMA coach as the Hughes meeting turned into a sort of organized form of group torture. Hughes wants to see more fire out of his guys and as such makes them feel the burn.

Speaking of deities, Mac decides to come down from the mountain top and defend what he calls the "rookies" he shares the show with. He didn't like Matt's treatment of Dan or the fact that he's taking out his frustration of the team. Mac even wonders aloud why he's on the show (as if it were beneath him).

Star-divide

Jared also jumps on the anti-Hughes bandwagon and doesn't like suffering because Hughes' ego is bruised by Serra's winning streak.

We start off with some training footage of George and we quickly learn that he's alienated himself from the rest of the team for his repeated selfish behavior. You know, important stuff like waking up sleeping teammates.

George embraces the loner persona but also seems to have a genuine desire to make a career out of fighting without screaming into the camera or talking tough.

Over at Team Hughes training session Jared gets ribbed by his trainer and I don't mean he played a practical joke on him. Jared has some rib damage but the X-rays reveal it's just a bruise so the fight will go on as scheduled.

Blake calls Jared a dark horse in this competition and knowing Blake's sense of humor I wondered if it was a double entendre. Mac makes sure he reminds us that he's the best fighter alive and graciously allows Jared and George to be second in line.

Ben puts more heat on George for yet another failed wake-up call and while I like Ben's personality I have to agree with the Aussie on this one. Have a glass of water before going to sleep or better yet go to bed earlier.

The official weigh-in is also officially tense as George and Jared have a stand-off over who gets to stand in a certain spot. They briefly lock horns but thankfully cooler heads prevail. Seems like everywhere George goes there is a problem just waiting for him. They make up over breakfast the day of the fight and share a few laughs.

Jared predicts it's going to be a war while George predicts he'll either finish him standing up or on the ground. I guess he doesn't plan on finishing him in mid-air.

Round one is forty seconds of dancing around until finally George throws and connects. More dancing and another shot connects for George. Now hands are starting to fly from both fighters. Nice leg kick from Jared that briefly staggers George. A George combo and Jared answers with a punch. Another punch lands for George. Jared kicks and slips as George grabs a leg. He looks for the single-leg takedown but Jared locks up an arm forcing him to roll out and stand.

Some more dancing and punching from both sides with George looking a little more accurate. A quick combo and a big uppercut drops Jared. George pounces and reigns down blows until a clean shaven Mazzagatti rushes in to stop the fight. Serra calls it a great fight but it didn't look like Jared even showed up.

Jared then embodies the phrase "noble in defeat" by attacking Matt Serra's coaching style and also his voice. Let me break it down for you Jared:

  1. Team Serra is 6-1. He must be doing something right.
  2. To make fun of the way someone sounds-especially with your voice-is like Patrick Stewart making fun of Michael Ironside because he's bald.
  3. You just got your ass kicked.

The fight was not spectacular. George looked a little tentative and Jared practically phoned it in. George was the victor because he pushed the pace and threw accurate and deliberate punches.

Coach Serra beams like a proud parent over the win and the now 6-1 record. The segment then cuts to perhaps the greatest shot in TUF history: A stoic Matt Hughes just staring at the camera and shaking his head. A classic.

Jared gets back to the locker room and punishes the furniture for his loss. He was really going crazy in there throwing chairs and grunting. Maybe he should have fought like that in the cage - he might have seen round two.

Stay tuned next week as the final preliminary bout pits John against Tommy, Hughes gets touchy-feely and Serra tries to drive that stake in just a little bit deeper.

See you then!

Mac kind of reminds me of Ed Herman. Big mouth, and it just didn’t pay off too well.

And Matt Hughes is a psycho. He is really a bad coach. He keeps wondering why his team is losing, yet he is punishing them.
Think back to when he pushes Joe Stevenson to destroy himself. Matt isnt a chess player, as in he doesn’t think three steps ahead. He wants to win so bad, he just think of the first step and then wonders why he lost the 2nd and 3rd.

Let’s see, Hughes busts up his fighter’s hand before last weeks fight and he busts his fighter’s ribs before this fight and they both lost. Hmmm, maybe you’ll want to change your game plan. He needs to start giving his team the benefit of his experience, not beating the crap out of them just before their fights.

Not positive, but I think they were mad at George because they didn’t have alarm clocks. Could be wrong, but on the van I think someone said “I’m just used to an alarm clock man.” Again, not positive…

This latest guy who lost, mini-Mr T, should have taken the fight to the ground when he realized he was getting picked apart. I didn’t see him shoot for a takedown.

And as for this throw a fit and cry after the fight, that shouldn’t be the determining factor as to whether you fight again in the UFC. These first round losers shouldn’t automatically get on future Fight Night undercards unless they really show something.

I dont know guys, Hughs might be a bit of a dick but you gotta admit at times he has his points. Dan freezing is an example. Maybe alittle time out for the boys would have done better. Its too bad they dont do a little bit of a background on the guys like what they do and who they really are.

There is definitly two different catagories of fighters on the show (Ben, Mac & the aussie) They are my favorites to win. Although Mac thinks its in the bag I am not 100% sure which one will come out on top.

I agree with the aussie, since when is he an alarm clock for the rest of the team. Grow up and take some responsiblity.

Warmachine looks like he has issues about who he is… And I fear the total will be 7 -1 when the pre-lims are finished.

Me too.
I cant talk bad about his fighting skills, acomplishments, and/or his all around talent,.BUT.his his attitude and the way he presents himself makes me want to “pop him”. I think he is arrogant, cocky and conceited.(not to mention he just looks like a FOOL)

I like to see when he doesn’t get his way, or when someone disrespects him(like he does to ppl) he gets all mad and red in the face.(it’s so funny), It seems Matt Serra get to him more then anyone. And that might work against him in Dec.

If I had to bet? I would go with “Hughesus Christ” to win in Dec. BUT I really hope the “year of upsets” has one more upset with Matt Serra winning.

Jared looked shook in the cage..got dropped..then wants make fun of Serra’s coaching..Dude got woooped..I didn’t hear a peep from his coach..acts crazy before and after the fight..good thing Dana had a talk with outside cuz after the talk Dana pointed out a tree branch..that almost dropped him again.

With the situ..of Serra’s team getting on George..Wake us up..I say get yourself out of..brush your own teeth..wipe your own ass. This isn’t pre school and George the only adult in the house.

Matt Hughes..is being bitter and really unfair to his team..I would not want to be on his team with that type of treatment.

That is absolutely correct. I was going to point that out as well, but I see you already did!

I thought it was pretty funny at the beginning during the fight recap when Dan was talking about his fight, and he said “…, but the fact of the matter is” about to go off on a positive self pep talk about how much of a warrior he is, and he instantly got cut off by Hughes. Who should have said “the fact of the matter is that you lost because you didn’t listen”. I dont remember exactly what he said, but it wasn’t that exactly.

George does seem like a prick to me. Sure its not your ‘responsibility’ to wake your team up for practice if you are up first and they are all still sleeping because they are not allowed alarm clocks (and must be exhausted), but it wouldn’t hurt to do so. Especially since they are your teammates and who he will be training with at practice. What was he hoping for, that everyone would stay sleeping, and he can sneak outside by himself once the van was there to pick him up? All the praise he was giving Serra, Longo, and Drago, I wouldn’t be surprised if he was really hoping to share some quality alone time with them…

Regarding the fight – Jared was as hesitant as can be! While his ribs were getting looked at and he was saying that he wanted to fight, he said something to the affect of “People fight with injuries all the time. It makes you fight much more cautious and protective, but it helps”. Well he sure did look cautious and protective, so much that he didn’t throw anything for the first minute and a half. Not only did he have a physical injury, but it didn’t look like his mind showed up either.

“WATCH YOUR HEAD” LOL

Referring to the very end of the episode when a wobbly, beaten, upset and crying J-Rock got a little pep talk from Dana outside, and was then headed back inside arm and arm with Dorian. He was about 6 inches from cracking his whole face right into a big tree branch. If Dana wasn’t behind them, he would have gotten KO’d for the second time in one episode!

by ViolentMike on Nov 1, 2007 9:17 AM EDT reply actions

It’s been said already but I’ll never understand why fighters insist on staying with the stand up. After the 4th or 5th unreturned punch to the face take it to the ground man. This ain’t boxing.

Hughes should just take his last fighter, stuff him into a burlap sack and beat him with hickory switches. That would definitely motivate all the lazy, non-listening, less-than-100%-giving losers he is trying to train.

Hairybuddha had to laugh at the silent Hughes head shake. Great editing. Hairybuddha doubts that the cast members can’t have alarm clocks. How do they know what time it is? Hairybuddha saw one of the dudes with a digital clock around his neck. Every digital clock comes with an alarm now a days. And who needs a wake up at 10:30 am? Only people who have been seriously partying that’s who. And if they have been seriously partying, why should George (who is training very hard) be responsible for waking them up? Remember he had the next fight coming up.

Hairybuddha shakes his head silently a la Matt Hughes.

and Hughes needs some damn leadership courses, that “one messes up you all pay the price” formula he goes off of is a horrible way to coach a team. I feel bad for the guys that go to his HIT Squad over in Illinois. I think I’d rather have Mark Hunt punch my testicles than train with Matt Hughes…

Yeah..for sure a crazy high 150 mile an hour war in thr cage with Guida and Huerta..I’m inching alittle towards Guida..but there is no loser if we see a great fight.

I have to see how the match ups..the fights play out..right now before that last peliminary match the top. my top 4 in order.

1. Mac
2. George
3. Ben
4. Matt

I’m looking forward to see what Tommy brings to the Cage..(he just might be lil’Huhges..when the qtrs start and we see the semis..everything depends match ups..Serra having control..hee has the power to dictate the road to the TUF 7 finale winner..who ever wins will at leaast have one really tuf fight before the finals..we might see an upset..we never know till it’s wednesday again.

Yeah they are definitely mixing up the timeline from the footage you see to the order that things actually happened. Notice how last week Ben only had a little scruff, maybe 3 days without shaving. On this weeks episode he almost had a full blown beard. I assume there is only 3-4 days between fights, since they have to stretch 6 weeks of real time on the show with 12 weeks of episodes. So assuming there was only about 3 days or so between Bens fight and this weeks fight, how did he grow a beard so fast?

George and Ben each have their points. It’s not George’s “responsibility” to wake up his teammates. However, it would be considerate of him to do so when they ask him to. But turning the light on doesn’t wake Ben up… he needs a tummy rub. Come ON!!! If turning the light on doesn’t wake you up, then I wonder what you were doing the night before. It would have been interesting if they would have shown what Serra’s team was doing those nights before the mornings they can’t wake up. Still, George could have seen that turning the light on didn’t wake up his team, and he brought their wrath upon himself. Oh well, it will just make things more interesting for us.

whaaaaaaaaaat! no 1 he came back after fighting in the ufc years ago to become champion, so he does’nt give up , he understands the sport and knows it can high kick ya to the head one day and wrap the belt around your waist the next. no 2 – everyone of his fighters listens to him in and out of the cage, unlike hughes who clearly doesnt get the message across. hmmmmmmmmm someone who self proclaimed only to have 3 more fights in him i’d say that really motivates him and his team , what a super sized DICK HEAD!

I don’t think Serra is going to take his 4 weakest guys and match them up against each other and then take his 2 best guys (George and Ben) and have them go at it in the quarters. He said both of those guys could win this thing and I am sure he will set the matchups to give George and Ben the best chance to advance. I think he matches somebody like Hightower up with Ben because Ben will TKO him. George will get Matt or John depending on who wins the last prelim.

Hughes is a great fighter, but he can’t pick matchups to save his life. As the all knowledgeable and wise Mac stated, hindnsight is 20/20, but J-Roc should have been matched up in episode 3 with John or Hightower. Get the guys you think are the best through to the quarters in the easiest way possible. That way you get the first televised fight jitters out of them.

lol, War Machine. Have you ever seen him fight before? Matt Hughes doesn’t even know a single thing about the kid, do you? He’s 1 of 2 people not to fight yet. From the looks of next weeks episode, he has a hard time dealing with a lot of things in his life so we’ll so how that effect his in the octagon. If there is a guarantee of anyone to make the finals, it is Mac Danzig by far, with George being 2nd – in my humble opion.

Its all going to come down to the match ups in the next two rounds. Serra is making the fight selections so I see him giving George and possibly Ben an “easier” ride to the next round, which means that he wouldn’t match either of them up with Mac. From what I’ve seen from everyone else this season, they would only have the infamous “puncher’s chance” when fighting Mac.

Oh well, it will just make things more interesting for us.

hey maybe the wake up call is what gets them to win each week

i had to come on just to say that this season has the worst group of fighters yet. Its crazy to me that these guys have actually had professional fights. In every season there have been a few guys were you say this guy can go somewhere sanchez kos stevenson swick diaz louzon i can keep going. There are one or two who look decent at best…..definately no future stars.

This show will not have all killas or stars of that respect, because no one would make it healthy to the finals..every match..could be war..injuries..sometimes the guys who tryout and make it..are just part of the tuf recipe. You know in the beginning who are the favs..then you have filler’s..who can match up with killas..and can cause an upset. I think the overrall structure of getting talent for this show is the same..except for season 4. ( comeback )..You will have 2 maybe 3 really tuf fighters..others with talent in different areas..some with a good personna for tv..etc

That’s sometimes why early matches are either..one sided..not action packed…it weeds them out..when the qtrs/semis get going..with who fights who..you might see Ben beat Mac..Or Matt beat George..but the obivious Blakes..Pauls..Scarola’s are out the way..Most people always want to see good match ups in the qtrs..better for the semi’s..and the best two fighters to settle it out in the finale.

I LOVED THIS EPISODE!!! I love how you pointed out the silent Matt Hughes head shake. I was dying laughing when i saw that. I fukin hate matt hughes and love that his team is getting killed worse than any team in tuf history! I just hope Matt Serra can finish the deal on December 29th!

Hughes made the wrong picks and Serra made the good picks. while hughes has an ego Serra is a smug mouthy prick. If Hughes works on his standup game Serra is done for. On the ground say whatever but everyone knows Hughes will dominate Serra on the Ground. Serra’s gameplan should be to go in and swing like a madman and windmill and walk towards hughes with bad intentions. Serra’s team may win then just to see their coach get totally dominated by Hughes. Serra is the one always smack talking Hughes it gets old. He talks like Hughes beat him up and stole his lunch money in elementary school. Its clear that Hughes is in Serra’s head without even trying.

Serra Joe out of loyality first..which means he gave up a legitamet first pick..So Hughes really had two first picks..Hughes..felt conifadent in his picks..and Sera did too..The difference now 7 episodes later..I see Matt coaching..teaching..fight planning..motovating..leading..where as Drill Srgt. I’m the queen Hughes..has them drill…spar and drill..pick fight match ups..bitch about “they don’t follow the plan”..He never prepd Dorian..for Matt..He just thought Billy was going run thru John..etc…he is demoralizing..egotistical to the highest power..Serra is in his head if anything..6-1..The matches hughes picks..he losses..no control of the qtrs..whines to Dana " I don’t know else to do "..Hughes is a hard nose tuff as nails in MMA guy..but he is not a better teacher or coach then Serra..from what this show has showed me..Serra is a good guy..a funny guy..a great teacher and coach..he talks to you on your level..Hughes talks to you from mountain tops.

Matt Serra:

I really thought the way Matt Hughes dumped on Daniel Barrera after last week’s fight was awful. The accusations Matt made about Barrera being scared were off base. Barrera, what he lacked in skill, he made up for in heart and effort. He wasn’t scared. He ate a ton of shots. He’s new to this, and you have to expect some growing pains in this sport.

I think Hughes is taking the fights on this show a little too personally. It should be all about the guys on his team competing and leaving here better fighters, not about his name in the center of the Octagon. He said it on an earlier episode, “I’m really competitive, and if I can’t win, I won’t play.” Saying he wanted to leave the show because he was so frustrated sounds like he doesn’t want to play anymore.

His temper tantrum aimed towards Blake Bowman aside, Mac Danzig showed a great deal of maturity in dealing with his teammates to this point. Ray Longo said it best when we were watching the episode this week — Mac could have, and maybe should have, been the coach of that team. He handled the guys way better than Hughes ever could in the face of mounting adversity.

Anyway, the fight announcement came down, and I wasn’t surprised — this is a matchup we’d been expecting. I thought George would be in good shape, regardless of his opponent. He is an extremely well rounded fighter, and, as I said on the show, his work ethic is unparalleled — sometimes we have to slow him down a little bit so he can save some for the fight!

Leading up to the fight, there was a bit of drama in the house about George not waking his teammates up. I wasn’t in the house, obviously, but when word came down to me about friction there, I could see where Ben was coming from. There are no alarm clocks in the house, so you’re relying on your biological clock to get you going, which can be a problem. I know when I was on the show, Din Thomas would give me a wake up call if I slept in. Anyway, I don’t think George was doing it to be rude or competitive or whatever Ben thought, it may have just been a cultural thing. Regardless of that drama, we squashed it before it became an issue. I’m proud to say that, contrary to Matt Hughes’s accusations earlier, my guys acted as a true team, and I think that’s a major reason why everyone has gotten better and we were 5 and 1 heading into this week’s matchup.

At the weigh ins, I didn’t like the way J-Roc was acting, telling George to stand in a certain place. It looked like he was trying to punk him, but, to his credit, George handled himself well, and wasn’t going to be intimidated by anyone. Intimidation tactics…maybe that was the Matt Hughes influence… What was definitely his influence was that witch doctor he brought in to look at J-Roc’s rib. I don’t even know what a witch doctor is, but it sounds creepy, and I just hope that dude doesn’t use voodoo on me for my bout with Matt in December

The scene with J-Roc and George eating breakfast the morning of their fight made me laugh. I’ve been in that position before: the night before my fight with Pete Spratt we ate dinner together, and it was definitely awkward. Whatever the outcome was, though, we knew that inside the Octagon, it was business, and once it was over, we could go back to being cool.

The fight went exactly how we wanted it to, George winning by picking J-Roc apart on his feet with some great counters. At one point they had a nice exchange when George shot in for as take down and J-Roc had a nice kumara defense, which brought the fight back on to its feet. George just caught him when they stood up, and we moved to 6 and 1 on the season.

As usual, Hughes started dumping on his team in defeat. The second J-Roc lost, he changed his tune from “J-Roc’s fighting with a rib problem, so he obviously wants to fight” to “it looks like he didn’t want to be in there to begin with.” Pretty convenient, I wonder if he’d be saying that had J-Roc caught George with a right instead of the other way around. It’s really amazing to watch the change in reaction to losing from Dorian’s loss in episode 2 to now.

J-Roc was pretty broken up about his loss, but he shouldn’t be. He’s a talented kid, and he’ll be back in the Octagon. Like Dana said, sometimes you just get caught.

That said, I think it’s ironic that, out of everybody there, he was the one making fun of my voice in his post fight interview. Not for nothing, but he makes Carlton from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air sound like DMX!

Until next week…

Hughes has a sadistic nature, he’s trying hard to keep it under control, but manages to bubble out in face of these surmounting losses. His method of training fighters is old school ‘break em’ in practice and the fight will seem easy. I think MMA training is moving forward and he’s standing still.

Serra’s method is to keep them fresh, no more conditioning than needed, work hard on technique and strategy, never beat them down, always keep their spirits and mind positive.

As I’ve written before, Serra just plain ol’ picked better guys. He didn’t look for muscles and grapplers like Hughes, he looked for well rounded fighters, mainly standup and jujitsu types.

by Thorazine on Nov 1, 2007 5:53 PM EDT reply actions

Jared can make fun of Serra’s coaching style all he wants but the fact of the matter is that Serra obviously picked the right fighters and you can actually hear him and see him coaching. Hughes seems to be coaching by kicking the shit out of his guys with a “thats how you fight” attitude. Good for Serra. Hughes may beat the crap out of him on the 29th but atleast if that happens Serra can know that he kicked the crap out of Hughes in a coaching and teaching format that the whole world can see.

Also that line Hughes used saying that he left a 10 month old baby girl to coach on the show is apparently false. From what i’ve read one of the conditions that he gave for coaching in this season was that his wife and kids get to stay with him in Vegas in the same rented house.

lol, War Machine.

No, but my cousin has and he said hes an animal on his feet and a really stronger wrestler. I guess my guarantee is a little biased because i like the guy a lot.

Jared impression of Serra’s after the fight was hysterical. Serra can brag all he wants about his fighters winning the first round but whats he going to say when Hughes runs through him Dec 29th?

please tell me how matt hughes is going to ‘run through’ serra…seriously.
hughes gameplan = shoot/blanket. his only chance of winning is grinding out a decision via extremely lame/boring lay-on-top styles. see hughes vs. lytle. i’m sure hughes will look/work for submissions, but the likelyhood he’ll submit serra is extremely slim. serra has ground credentials and although hughes has the strength advantage, serra is too crafty and experienced to get submitted by hughes. if it’s standing for any amount of time and hughes actually feels he can stand and trade, well, it’s going to be a very short night for him indeed. serra has brutally heavy hands and if he lands a flush shot to hughes’ jaw, matt will wake up and realize he’s done for good. so….it doesn’t look too likely hughes is running through anyone at this point in the game because everyone and their mother knows what his gameplan is. at this level you can only rely on strength and wrestling so much, and when you’re grappling with a guy like serra, you gotta have a few more arrows in your quiver. i think it’s very possible hughes wins via decision, i just think it’s going to be an extremely lame boofest of a fight. serra on the other hand to me is the kind of guy that obviously handles extreme pressure very very well, is not joke on the ground and seems to have the type of standup that can knock dudes out cold.

Hughes said that? Before or after GSP handed him his head? My theory about Hughes is that he has a lot of natural talent for fighting. Unfortunately natural talent does not make for a good coach. A less talented fighter like Serra is going to know what it takes to bring a fighter up from nothing.

how many tko’s does serra have?……….oh ya 1, the unintentional hit to the back of gsp’s head, by a guy with “heavy hands”. If his hands were so freaking heavy how come he only has one tko win?? I agree his stand up has improved but to say he has heavy hands is ridiculous, he stunned karo once, 11 seconds into the match which he recovered from then screwed up gsp’s equilibrium with a left forearm clipping him behind the ear, heavy hands….I don’t thinks so. Look at sanchez and his spectacular ko of riggs then his horribly lame performance against kos, serra is a one hit wonder who won the jackpot. I guarantee in 2 years everyone will be seeing his fight with gsp differently, like the blind folded guy who gets a bulleye, looks great right away but after missing the whole dart board after his 50th shot loses credibility. Think back to when he pushes Joe Stevenson to destroy himself. Matt isnt a chess player, as in he doesn’t think three steps ahead. He wants to win so bad, he just think of the first step and then wonders why he lost the 2nd and 3rd.
