Mainstream Mess: Randy vs UFC makes TIME online

The Ultimate Fighting Championship has become so popular that even big guns like TIME magazine are taking notice.

Yet somehow I'm sure this isn't what Zuffa had in mind.

The UFC is profiled at Time.com for its ongoing feud with Randy "The Natural" Couture, the beloved heavyweight champion who walked away from the sport he helped build because of a myriad of issues.

Here's a snip:

The sport is now fending off a fusillade of blows from one of its biggest stars. Randy Couture, 44, a five-time champion in two weight divisions and the sport's most public face, announced his retirement a few weeks ago. That surprised UFC aficionados and its executives, who believe he is under contract and can't retire. But what surprised them even more was the sucker punch Couture delivered on his departure. "I'm tired of being taken advantage of, played as the nice guy and basically swimming against the current with the management of the UFC," he said. "I have a lot of other things going on in my life that I'm doing just fine with. I don't need the problems. I don't feel like I get the respect I deserve from the organization.

The article opens with the usual blood-and-guts approach to cage fighting, but while ignorance from outsiders has become an accepted norm (the UFC doesn't allow stomps), it accurately depicts the UFC as an organization running out of mainstream ambassadors.

Here's more:

As ultimate fighting gained legitimacy, it created stars out of Tito Ortiz, Chuck "the Iceman" Liddell and Couture. Now that facade is beginning to crumble. Liddell, who was recognizable enough to have an episode of HBO's Entourage focused on him, has lost two fights. Ortiz has been in an ongoing feud with White about contractual issues. ("Until Dana White is ready to fight me on a professional basis," said Ortiz at one point, "I strongly urge him to keep his mouth shut.") And now comes Couture's outbursts about money and White's counterattack. "At the end of the day we treat our fighters right," says White. "The whole thing makes no sense. I felt like I got kicked in the throat." This is one no-holds-barred battle that Ultimate Fighting doesn't want.

Issues stemming from money and contracts are inevitable in this and any sport. Perhaps in any job. With guys like Tito Ortiz on the front lines anyone could have predicted this kind of scenario would eventually be played out in the court of public opinion.

But I don't think anybody could have predicted it would be with Randy Couture.

Wonderful! just what the sport needs; a good Don King style feud made public. It is a travisty that this is what makes Time online, and not any of the public service or positive things that this sport brings.

For as much as Randy says he wants to do what is good for the sport and the fighters, with the consequences of his recent actions he may have done more to damage the sport and reputation of MMA and its fighters than any other one person

I tell you from everything I’ve read and seen on Randy & the UFC fued (which is alot). It seem like Randy has somebody (wife and/or agent) talking in his hear, and making him think he’s due more. In my opinion he’s been rewarded soundly, and should shut the f up and fight.

If Tito Ortiz went over to dana at a UFC event and smashed him in the face – would tito loose his contract???

by Insain on Nov 1, 2007 11:54 AM EDT reply actions

I think this whole subject is more boring than the Sherk steroid appeal. Let’s get over it already, Randy, Of course they’re going to offer Fedor more money, He’s got an aura of invincibilty and he can draw big fight PPV’s just as well as you, and he’s a lot younger. No sport likes to give big money contracts to old guys look at Roger clemens this year, what a waste of 30 mill.

by Getrawbc on Nov 1, 2007 11:54 AM EDT reply actions

He signed a contract and he should not have signed it if he was not happy, He says it’s all about the fighting, but it clearly isn’t.

Once you sign the contract your up shit creek, If he is not happy then wait till your contract is up and negotiat again.

I think this makes him look like a little baby that wants more money.

I think this is a really bad look for the sport, and I cant wait until this is all over. Randy will probably have another press conference. This is all madness.. With Time online covering this dispute all the non-UFC fans will get the wrong impression of the sport.

Off the subject:
There is a great Q and A on fighthype.com with Gary Shaw, Jake Sheilds, KJ Noons and Kimbo Slice from EliteXC.
.it is long, but good..Gary Shaw is saying he will open weight classes ranging from 140,150,160,170,180,205 and a 265 superweight divion.

And now, the man that has done so much for his beloved sport (Randy Coutoure) has been able to undo all that good by taking his dirty laundry public.

Nice job, Champ… :/

Randy got bigger than the game. Randy got bigger than the sport. MMA will soon be like boxing and other sports….with ego driven decisions based on monetary value, with the help of “agents” and other snake-like reps. Randy looked around and decided it was time to be a bitchy brat, and bite the hand that feeds him. He looked around and saw others getting what he thought he wasnt, and decided to turn on the faucets. Of all people, I thought Randy was above all this. But nope, he too was capable of finally becoming bigger than the sport. Get ready for a ride everyone, cuz it’s going down just like boxing. Just wait and see. You know as well as I do, it’s ALLLLLLL ABOUT THE MONEY!

Money, money, money. Nothing more. The ultimate goal is 1 million dollar paychecks. Money. The beginning of the end….

GOOD GUY – RANDY
CORPORATE SCUM- DANA

This is good for both sides. UFC in TIME MAGAZINE
DANA gets more exposure as the BIG BAD BOSS..
Randy comes out as the good guy geting taken advantage off.
Just like WWF Vince and Hogan hated each other it worked out for both.
I like hating DANA but i think overall he does a great job.
JUST STOP being STINGY !!!

This is a huge step backwards for the UFC. All the good that Randy has done, has been erased. I never thought I would see the day the good ol’ classy, professional Randy couture became the Terrell Owens of mma.

The past 30 days have damaged the UFC and the sport greatly.

Randy Shut the F*ck up and fight Noguerra already, this is getting worse and worse.

Im sad, because I have to agree these guys are getting way to big for their breches. BUT OUT OF ALL THE FIGHTERS I THOUGHT RANDY WAS BETTER THAN ALL THIS, BUT NO, MY FAVORITE FIGHTER WHO NEVER TALKS SHIT, WHO SHOWS THE HEART OF A TRUE WARRIOR, NEVER QUITS, AND NEVER COMPLAINS,decides he is going to jump on the pansie train with tito. Im sorry randy but the ufc has proved that you are lieing! or being lied too by your wife, manager, whatever.
F#ck you Randy, Why dont you take a look at your old fight videos, look at what you are doing right know, and fight some more to prove to us that you are still “the natural”. Because if you retire the way you are now, your A&E biograghie is going to have a bad ending, And you have already lost a ton of respect from the mma community.

Another story which shows how Dana is more like Don King than everyone thought. You think he’s in this because he loves the sport? I bet you he loves the money more. Randy and Tito are right, the fighters deserve more. Sterns paid out more to docs than he made in the fight.

Have you been living in a cave? ALL of Couture’s CHECK deposits are in the press documents presnted by the UFC, you can look at it on this site, just click fighter link. Couture will make about 2.4-2.5 million for the 2 fights. The rest of the money is for other things he does for the UFC, commentating contract etc.

It really is funny to see how quickly the fans here change their tunes. One day Randy is classy and, to some fans, commended for retiring on top. The next day after the UFC sheds some light on all the benefits he receives now he’s not so classy and maybe he should have finished his contract. My Quit and I have been supporting the UFC in this battle since it started and I’m glad some of you are seeing through the smoke and mirrors of this over-hyped ingrate. I just hope that the next time the UFC is attacked by one of it’s fighters that people won’t be quick to point fingers until both sides have been able to state their side of the story.

THIS ARTICLE IS PROOF THAT DANA NEEDS TO CHANGE, SHUT UP OR BE REPLACED…or MMA will suffer.

The UFC has finally “made it”, and it needs to be very careful and more professional since it is now in the limelight (like never before).

Dana’s antics worked to get us here, but it can pull it all down. Just look at what Don King’s did for Boxing.

Randy would have to fight Fedor in a CAGE of some sort to utilize his Greco Roman Wrestling and his “Clinch” Game Plan Fully.

Dana Says that the # 1 fighter in the World in the HW division is Randy Couture…then why would he offer Fedor more than Randy per fight and a bigger signing bonus?!?!?!?

THe russian experiment, Fedor has stated that he didn’t sign with the ufc because he and his manager(s) didn’t like the way DANa was, that’s understandable, coming from another country.

DAna never answered the question as to why RAndy was not given a bonus after he defeated GG. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY:
WHAT IS THE AVERAGE SLARY FOR A FIGHTER IN THE UFC???
JARDINE KILLS LIDDEL AND GETS 14,000, 7,000 to show up 7,000 to win and CHUCK GETS half a million just to lose and probably his ppv numbers are like well over a million dollars.

THE ufc did not nor will they open their books. ANd they like betting …Lorenzo came from and stillowns some casinos doesn’t he????

Couture is putting people like Forrest Griffin (who he trains with) in a tough situation. It would be interesting to hear someone like Forrest’s (off the record of course) take on Randy’s behaviour after it has been proven that Randy wasn’t being straight with respect to his bonus check (among other things). Couture has made a huge mistake. Someday (when his other ventures dry up) he will realize it and regret it big time. It seems to me that Lorenzo Fertitta now views Randy as a traitor, much like the IFL probably views Monte Cox. As I’ve expressed numerously, Randy has let his ego and his associates throw him off track. It’s a shame. Someone needs to talk some sense into him and help mediate this situation. Couture is “shooting himself in the foot”.

I love how Couture’s nickname is “Captain America”…..He represents exactly what America stands for first and foremost; MONEY. In a country where you get paid more to fight than you do to save lives i think he is the perfect role model, so many people jumping to defend their hero before the facts are all out, sounds like the american way to me. Randy is a coward who waned to go out on top, looking like gold win or lose, and when he didn’t get his way he went home. Captain America Indeed.

I completly agree. I think randy is acting. And i dont mean in movies i mean acting like a little b1tch. For someone to come out like this and make this sport look bad. Not enough respect come on the guy got KTFO twice by chuck and then he got a title shot.

Read this on Matt HUghes’ blog, thought it fit

The problem was they got so big so fast they had to get more workers. So now it’s just a much bigger organization and things are a lot different. Dana doesn’t know all that goes on over there. It seems like he’s off doing his own thing. So I’m sure that a lot of what Randy is mad about, Dana has nothing to do with. A lot of times the UFC will call me up and ask me to do things. If my schedule’s busy or I don’t want to do it, I just say no. If Dana White calls me up and asks me to do something I always do it. And if I need something done at the UFC, I know I can always call Dana.

That’s because Time Magazine is ultra-liberal and would never let hardworking corporate America look like the good. It’s against everything they stand for unfortunately.

Also, I’m quite sure Dana White doesn’t make anywhere near what Randy Couture makes in a year. Randy made $3 million from UFC and more than that outside of the UFC so $6 million in one year. And somehow Dana’s the money-grubbing, greedy scumbag. (I see it much differently)

I think the reason people’s opinion’s swung back and forth was due to the fact that the actual facts were revealed slowly over time. Nobody knew the whole story on day 1. Randy told his story first, then then UFC told thier, then Randy, then the UFC. Then it was found that Randy is either a liar or has a constant voice in his ear telling him what to do and say.

Holyfield/Tyson II grossed nearly $95,000,000 on pay per view buys alone(1,900,000 viewers paid $49.95).
The fighters purse— Tyson $30,000,000— Holyfield $35,000,000..and one ear. This is just PPV revenues, and over 60% went back to the fighters about 30% to each!
Dana White has been talking about 1,000,000 PPV viewers at $40 or $40,000,000 gross PPV revenue. Randy got paid how much?? $250,000 for sure and for the sake of the argument another $1,000,000. 3% going to the fighter, somebody is making a lot of money and it certainly is not the athlete!
Dana White came from a boxing promoter back ground. The Casino brothers live in the business world, these folks know buisness. Randy shame on you for signing the contract, more power to you for walking away. Dana White wake up and smell the roses, if you won’t pay, I know the Mavericks will!
