Day of reckoning: Sean Sherk steroids appeal before CSAC later today

sean sherkUFC Lightweight Champion Sean Sherk will go before the The California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) at 12 p.m. ET today to appeal his steroid suspension.

"The Muscle Shark" tested positive for a banned illegal steroid known as "Nandrolone" after his successful 155-pound title defense against Hermes Franca at UFC 73: "Stacked" back in July. Franca also tested positive for steroids; however, he admitted to the charge and accepted the punishment ($2,500 fine and a 12-month suspension).

On the other hand, Sherk has denied taking any banned substances and has stretched out his appeal to put together a solid defense.

If the ruling is upheld Sherk will more than likely face a similar fate as his UFC 73 counterpart. In addition, UFC President Dana White has indicated that he will be stripped of his title.

In that case, BJ Penn is penciled in to fight Joe Stevenson for the vacant lightweight title later this year (UFC 79) or early next.

Stay tuned to see what happens ... finally.

Note: Phil Baroni (EliteXC), Kazuhiro Nakamura and Adam Smith (StrikeForce) are also scheduled to appeal similar cases before the CSAC this afternoon.

Maybe his defense will show Sean Sherk UFC all access..show him snacking on some organic lettuce..and popping 22 vitamens and minerals daily..I just happy to know the deal already. I tired of this red light in the Lw division. I fall in the bracket..guilty as charged..but he got the Johnnie Crok..of sports doping..I would’nt be surprised.

Its about damn time this date has come. It is now time for Sean Sherk to face is fate. At this point in time, I am hoping that he is guitly for the sole reason that he put this exciting division on hold. The (argueably) 2 most exciting divsions in the UFC, LW and WW, have had thier titles be on hold for a long period of time, especially WW.

But then again, if he is SOMEHOW found to be innocent, I will be upset with the system, because it would have been the system, not Sherk, who had the division on hold.

In my personal opinion, I expect him to be found guilty today and stipped of the title. Just from seeing that episode of All Access, there is no way that I would believe that Sherk was ‘unknowingly’ putting anything into his body. He seems so obsessive about his nutrition, that he probably examines each and every one of his bowel movements to see exactly what, and how much of it has just left his body. That way he can adjust his vitamin and uncooked organic food intake accordingly. (Sorry for putting that image in your mind, especially so early…..)

Adam Smith..got caught with two differents of roids..and coke and marijuana in his system..made only $500 and was fined like $2000..and suspened for a year..which is good for him..I don’t think he can afford to fight at the rate he is going.

Urine analysis as a method of detecting nandrolone abuse has recently become somewhat controversial, following studies by the University of Aberdeen showing that the metabolite product can also show up in urine in quantities above the upper limit from a combination of high-protein diets utilising the legal nutritional supplement creatine and hard cardiovascular exercise. The reason for this unexpected result has not been determined. Another possible (though unlikely) reason for a false positive result is the consumption of beef from cattle treated with steroids including nandrolone. Heavy consumption of the essential amino acid lysine could also force a negg test result.

He needs to face the facts as stated above and let the division get on with another champion. I don’t see how the commision is going to reverse their decision. No matter how the banned substance got in his system, it is illegal and he should do what he has to do in the future to make sure it doesn’t happen again. I’m sure he is well aware of what he is ingesting.

nandrolone is also found in many protein builder drinks from smaller more agressive companies who like to slip a little extra in. This is well known.

In addition, the nandrolone metabolite can stay in the system 6 months, meaning even if he followed a strict pre-fight protocol of avoiding suspect supplements, it wouldn’t help the spiked protein drink.

he should win the appeal.

If it’s in his system, no matter how it got there, he’s done. There have been entirely too many athletes who test positive and claim to not know what they were taking (I thought it was flaxseed oil and arthritis balm). These people make their living with their bodies. If they don’t know what’s going into them, then they are monumentally stupid. If they take some non-FDA approved supplement from Spike at their local gym and it produces a positive test, then they are monumentally stupid for taking it. As much attention as Sherk paid to what he was eating and ingesting, I find it almost impossible to believe that this was an accident or the result of hormone-laden beef. The positive test will be upheld, Sherk will be out for a year, and at his age, his career will be about dead.

if he’s guilty his one year suspension should start now rather then after the franca fight. It seems like this dude has had the title for a longggg time for only one title defense.

The suspension doesn’t begin until after the appeal process is complete. Franca knew he cheated and would not be cleared so he chose to forego his appeal and begin serving his suspension immediately. Sherk is attempting to lawyer his way out of his two positive tests through appeals, so his suspension won’t officially begin until his positive test is confirmed this afternoon.

I couldn’t have put it better myself. Sherk has held up the LW title for 2 years now, only defending it once…. I hope this a-whole is guilty.

I don’t think so, in America if you are found guilty of something and given a prison sentence they typically deduct time already served in any case where you were denied bail. So for example, if your sentenced to 3 months, and you’ve already been imprisoned for 1, then you would only have to serve 2 from the time of sentencing. If anybody here is a lawyer, please confirm or deny this.

In any case, Sherk has been suspended since July, that would count towards his 1 year.

He’s right pride is no more. Dan Henderson should consider dropping down to 185lbs. He has a good chance to use some of his strengths against a tough Anderson Silva. Dan was never a true 205 anyway.

I am one of the few who is pulling for Sean Sherk. We have had extensive back and forth blogs over this topic since mid-July. My whole thing is, until someone can beat him, he is the champion. All of you who believe ground fighting and setting up an attack by “LNP” just don’t understand the entire landscape that MMA is about.

BJ Penn versus Sean Sherk is something I absolutely look forward to seeing. Do not get me wrong, I am furious that Sherk’s ordeal is delaying the LW division, but if his ruling is over turned, I can easily forgive him.

My only comparison to Sherk would be an NFL team that plays hard nosed football and pounds the ball via running attack. The idea is to wear your opponent down until he cannot take it anymore and folds up. All of you are looking for the 80 yard TD pass because it’s pretty. Not all MMA fights have to be on the feet throwing haymakers.

i was waiting for this blogg all morning!!! .. .. does anybody think were going to see BJ vs Sherk?

dude I hope so, i mean not only by watching the way he trains and eats but also the way Dana talked about him not wanting to step into the casino because of the smoke, thats hardcore taking care of your body, I really dont think that he would of taken anything, besides that drug that he allegedly took, I heard we already have a certain amount of it in our bodies that its supposed to be like a 4 or 5 and that if someone temperd with it by taking drugs it would bump up to 12 or 13 no matter how much of the drug you use it would automatically move to that high, Sherk was on “8 or 9”, it could very well be that hes a freak of nature and all those years of training and just genes gave him extra nandrolone. Im rooting for him. and im going to UFC79 i would love to see this fight added to the card Sherk vs Penn, damn with Liddell vs Silva and Hughes vs Serra cant wait

Has anyone ever won an appeal? Maybe a reduction of sentence, but I can’t remember any athlete failing a drug test and winning the appeal.

by leroy on Oct 31, 2007 11:41 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

8 or 9 is high. Doesn’t the Olympic guys, I think it’s WADA (World Anti-doping Agency) consider anything above 4 a positive test. No wait, according to Wikipedia “The International Olympic Committee has set a limit of 2 ng per ml of urine as the upper limit, beyond which an athlete is suspected of doping.”

So if the limit is 2ng and Sean tested at 8 or 9 I’m thinking someone finished their cycle too late. I would not be surprised though if they spun some bs about him being a mutant and having freakishly high levels. If they do clear him let’s hope BJ dethrones him.

by RobH86 on Oct 31, 2007 11:42 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

What’s the upper limit for nandrolone according to the CSAC. Is it the same as the IOC?

by RobH86 on Oct 31, 2007 11:44 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

It is known however that in certain cases a person can test above 5ng and it will be a false positive for steroid abuse. There have been many cases where an athlete combines an extremely active lifestyle with legal supplements and a high protein diet that can produce a higher than normal level. I don’t see how they can suspend him for a test that has been known to be inaccurate.

Just as lie detector tests are not admissible in court because they are unreliable, they are still right most of the time. Its the reasonable doubt that makes these tests inadmissible. I believe in Sherks case, because of his lifestyle, there is plenty of reasonable doubt. Innocent until proven guilty, but right now Sherk is trying to prove his innocence. Can the CSAC prove that their test is accurate? I think not. Oh by the way, Sherk did pass a lie detector test about the steroid abuse.

Watching that behind the scenes with Sherk, where they show his training… if you know anything about training.. you couldn’t believe what you were seeing. He was taking it to a whole new level. It would be so great if all his vitamins, organic veggies… etc, were the only fuel he had in him. Looking back, it makes much more sense now… Done.

Fact is, if you don’t want a guy on top of you “LNP” then don’t let him take you down to the floor.

If you don’t wan’t a team scoring points on you, then f-ing stop them with defense.

Bunch of bafoons with this nonsense wah wah Sherk is a product of the “LNP”. I love MMA because we witness a wide range of disciplines. I love boxing, I do but it doesn’t offer what MMA does.

Here’s my take. I don’t think he took a steroid, but I do believe the metabolite was in an OTC supplement he took. The detection time for the nandrolone metabolite is 17-18 months and 11-12 months if he took the faster acting version (i.e. durabolin). If that were true, he would have tested positive for the Kenny Florian fight as the time difference between the fights was 9 months. Secondly the level of the test for 12ng/dl, pretty low for a steroid test, compared to 50ng/dl that was found in Royce Gracie’s test.

Fisher, Huerta, Guida….These guys don’t like laying around. Even Diego is moving down to LW. I hope he IS guilty, What a Goof!

Why would it be doubtful? Who else in that division is ready right now to fight Anderson Silva? There is not even a real contender out there. I am almost 90% sure that the UFC does not want a Yushin/Anderson fight.

wow, so many haters. i guess i’m one of the few who believes sherk is just a workhorse maniac, NOT a cheater. it just seems retarded for a guy to be so damn health conscious about what he puts in his body to turn around and cheat like that. on the one hand he does have kids and it’s well documented that he was fed up with the pay and schedule he had to make ends meet years ago, however once he got the title i find it hard to believe sean would be so stupid and unconfident of not on his skills, but himself in general.

i’m pulling for sean. i don’t think it benefits anyone if he gets burned for this. least of all his fam and kids.

I don’t think he’s going to 185, but why wouldn’t he get an immediate title shot? He got an immediate title shot at 205, didn’t he. At 185 it would be another unification fight.

Hendo is supposedly rumored to be fighting at 185 in December. Maybe Anderson Silva? Lets pray so.

Big news. Dan Henderson announced possibly fighting on the UFC 79 card @ 185. I tried to post the link and source but keep getting blocked

NC-17: This news is a fabrication.

1st off, Dan Henderson is a BIG name fighter. He is a HUGE asset to the UFC because he can headline any pay per view card at either 185 lbs or 205 lbs. This is Henderson’s last fight on his current UFC contract. With that said, I believe that the UFC will put him up against another Big name opponent.

He WILL NOT be fighting at 185 lbs in december because there aren’t any big name opponents at 185 lbs that would be ready to fight in December. Franklin and Silva just fought, as did Okami and Mcdonald. That leaves only one possible opponent for him to face in that division, Nate marquardt. In my oppinion, I do not think Marquardt has a big enough NAME to entice Hendo into fighting him.

Also UFC 79 NEMESIS is already a stacked card, with Serra vs. hughes for the title and Wandy vs. Liddell. No way in the world that cheap ass Dana white includes Hendo on that card. He will never give us 3 main event worthy matches on the same card. It would be nice, but it would be bad business on the UFC’s part, and I can respect that.

Fighters that could be ready to fight in January or Febuary against Hendo are:

Shogun(if his knee heals by then)

Tito (Hendo doesn’t want to fight Tito because tito isn’t on his level and a win against Tito does nothing to get Hendo back in title contention.. I agree with that)

Machida (Personally, I hate Machida and I wouldnt rank him anywhere near the top 10, but the guy has millions of fans on his nutts because of his performances in other fights outside of the UFC…so his Name might be big enough to challenge Hendo)

Forrest Griffin (His heart alone gives him a chance against anyone)

Jardine (comming off a big win against the Iceman, a win against Hendo will have Jardine very close to a title shot)

or a fighter people always forget is part of the UFC roster Arona

Ur right John..there isn’t no other fight to market and that we all want to see. Anderson Silva vs Dan Henderson.

This is the only match up for Silva that he won’t be the clear cut favorite..I think he would beat him now..if doing so would cement his legacy as the best ufc Mw champ ever.

I don’t think they would put a 185 unification bout on a card that doesn’t need more star power. It would be overshadowed by Chuck/Wandy and the anticipated Serra/Hughes fight that will put a cap on TUF 6. I could see him signing a new contract soon and getting a tune-up at 185 before he takes on Silva in Feb or March. 8.5 weeks, from now, for either man to get ready for that big of a fight is kinda pushing it.

THE ONLY REASON DAN HENDERSON WOULD DROP BACK TO 185 WOULD BE TO FIGHT ANDERSON SILVA TO UNIFY THE TITLE. To talk about ANY other opponent for Hendo at 185 is just stupid. (Except for Franklin if he beat Silva last fight and Franklin and Hendo were coaches for next TUF season – but too bad for us, that didn’t happen)

If I ever take steroids I’m asking you!…lol… I was wondering about this, thanks for the info

The Sherk steroid odyssey continues … another hearing has been set a month from now. No ruling until Nov 13th at the earliest … that’ll be the next date. Issue was Jacobs submitted a packet on Friday which no one looked at. Since they didn’t look at it, he asked for another postponement. The package contained polygraph information and other shit which doesn’t matter. Sherk said he’s spent 20k in legal fees and is pretty pissed off about all this and “isn’t happy about the recess”. Well hey … neither are we. Phil Baroni is up next, but I’m not sticking around to blog the result. ******* cocksucking bullshit

Considering Diego has fought at 185 effectively that is a bit of a cut…then again stevenson used to fight at 185 or 170? in KOTC.

I would just like to state that Sherk is one of the most dominant fighters pound for pound and whether we like it or not he wins fights….I dont think penn or stevenson have even close to the power or stamina to keep up with him..and think about this i doubt penn can even come close to landing any sort of arm lock on him….And truth be told penn hasnt really impressed me lately…yea with the hughes penn rematch he put a nice little beating on hughes the first three round but did anyone think to tell him it was a five round fight ..the same if he fight sherk…and no i dont think stevenson is a legit threat to the top lightweights….not that there are a whole lot of them…..And people want to make fun of sherk for the baby food…they need to shut the h**l up and think about it there is a reason that babys are supposed to eat it…clean healthy food with little in the way of excess crap unlike a lot of stuff that people eat….A little unconventional but hey it works….
