Dana White: Randy Couture 'belongs to me'

Props: FOXSports.com
Quoteworthy:
"He definitely belongs to me.... There's no way I was going to let anybody come in from another organization and make more money or have better deals than my guys who have been with me for a long time and helped me build this business. To be honest, I think Randy would smash Fedor. He'll beat him easily ... Fedor is over-hyped, overrated. The guy hasn't fought anybody in the last year and a half, two years."
UFC President Dana White emphasizes once again that Randy Couture -- who recently resigned from his position as heavyweight champion -- is going to have a difficult time fighting in another organization against someone like Emelianenko in nine months when his UFC contract expires. Couture is currently on the set of The Scorpion King: Rise of The Akkadian in South Africa, appearing in the major motion picture as "Invincible." For more on Couture's uphill battle click here, here and here.

This comes from the same man who offered him something like 2 million per fight to join the UFC. Why do none of these retard reporters grill him on this shit? Are they just dumb? I don’t get it. Mainstream media news shouldn’t even be posted here at this rate. Dana gets away with whatever he wants or says. It’s so dumb. Double speak.

He obviously pays fighters based on how much money they will make him, not how well they fight, the 2 typically go hand-in-hand though because the fans arent duped into thinking someone is better than they are. Which is what Dana is pretty much saying right here.
Prime example: Tito Ortiz. Rakes in the big money, but is a B class fighter, hasn’t fought anyone in the top 10 in his last 6 fights, but just re-signed his contract worth a ton, because people love to see him.
I could see paying Fedor a ton of money to come get his butt kicked by Couture, cause anyone that has the smallest bit of admiration for MMA would pay 50 bucks no question to see it go down. With that being said, Fedor wouldn’t get “easily” beaten by anyone. Beaten maybe, but definitely not easily.

dana dana dana if fedor would have come to ufc and fight randy you would hype this up as best of the best, fight of the year, the real hw champ which is cool its business, but from a fans point of view if in nine months he wants to fight fedor and you stop it you will be the most hated man in mma history. If anything you should help promote and demand some of the earnings from ppv.

I agree 100% with Sir MixaLot. One minute Dana is offering more money to Fedor than any other fighter in the UFC and now he’s talking as if Fedor is a spare. As an MMA fan for just over 4 years now I don’t profess to know it all. But one thing it didn’t take me long to figure out is that Dana is just a dipshit. I don’t wish bad things on the UFC but my interest is more into good MMA shows, regardless of the organization. If this M-1 thing I’ve been reading about takes off(as I’ve heard rumors Mark Cuban is behind it) and they can lure in some of the better fighters then I’d be just as happy watching them as well. Signing Fedor was a great start and I’m reading that Hendo has decided not to extend his contract with the UFC, though I’m unaware of what his intentions are after that contract is fulfilled. Could M-1 being talking to him behind the scenes? Will others follow? I’m looking forward to what seems to be some inevitable changes in the world of MMA since it’s exploded into the mainstream.

I agree with RearNakedSlam in what you say last… All this “He’ll beat him easily” crap is just two things:
1- Sour grapes.
2- Smokescreen for his inability to negotiate bringing Fedor to UFC.
Every die hard fan knows that anything could happen in a battle between those two. Dana should give a little respect to those of us who know better.

Didn’t he fight Liddel less than a year ago, Forrest Griffin (who is in title contention now) and Rashad Evans (is a main event in the next PPV)? The only person he’s lost to is Liddell and that’s only because he was trying to prove his stand up (which was a terrible idea). I believe he did have serious back pain and that’s why he gassed in all his 2nd and 3rd rounds – you could see him in pain even though he wasn’t getting hurt. I think he gets this surgery and comes back as the old Tito. (And I’m not even really a big tito fan)

more bs from Dana. But what I’m really not liking is how Dana is saying he “owns” Randy. To me that sound disrespectful. Dana is a douchbag. MMA will be just as dirty a sport in the next few year…if its not already.

2million a fight..for hype???
Bingo! (in the voice of Gary Oldman’s Character in "the Professional) & Spot on, spot on. (In the voice of Stewie Griffin)
Food for Thought:
1. M-1 is UFC’s competition
2. Fedor is the Face of M-1 (Similar to Liddel or Couture)
SO if Dana White gives Fedor the credit he deserves, than he is also saying that M-1 is a legit organization and a possible threat to the UFC.
Dana White contrdicts himself constantly, this goes without saying. His goals are to get as many people as possible to wathc UFC PPVs. Thus, he does NOT want any other competition. That’s why he tries to discredit Fedor, since his not a UFC fighter, and M-1 because its a threat to the UFC.
Dana is a girl’s name.
by The Truth on Oct 19, 2007 2:32 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Dana is slowly but surely building a very bad record:
- he is the face of a major organization, yet he can’t have a conversation without using the “f..” word;
- he came out saying “who’s Shogun”, “no one knows Shogun”, etc., and then changed 180 degrees hyping the fight with F. Griffin;
- he hyped the signing of CroCop (a great fighter but don’t they all have bad periods?) and then he’s first to question him when his performance was low (said some funny things about Chuck too);
- do you remember what he was saying about W. Silva (prior to Silva joining the UFC)?
- shows absolutely no respect towards any of his counterparts (managers of EliteXC, Bodog, etc.).
I don’t really expect to see a humble person, but Dana was great for the early stages of the UFC, I’m not sure he’s the type of person who can lead an organization further.

In case we already didn’t have enough reasons to think Dana is a total douschebag, he always seems to give a couple more. The guy just has no tact whatsoever, and that’s assuming he isn’t simply an idiot. Either way, he’s showing himself to be exceptionally poor representation of the UFC and MMA in general. I’ve never particularly liked Matk Cuban either, but at least he has the decency and common courtesy to treat the athletes he works with in a professional manner. Dana White just has zero class in my book, he is starting to look like the Don King of MMA, only worse…..at least Don King had cool hair.

I forgot about UFC 66, other than him [Liddel] though, Rashad Evans who is also a B class fighter who is main eventing perhaps the worst card in UFC history took him to a draw. Ken Shamrock twice, who was over the hill 5 years before their first fight. Forest Griffin who is now a top rated fighter, but at the time was considered to be a B class fighter. Vitor Belfort who after his loss to Tito went and got dominated by Dan Henderson and then went to CAGE RAGE, and Patrick Cote who is a C class fighter.
I do agree though that if it is his back thats giving him trouble and he does turn back into the Tito of old he can be something again, but I don’t see that happening. (and I am a Tito fan, but a realistic one.)

I think the Fertita brothers need to pay close attention to Dana White. He WAS great for the sport by getting mma out of the dark adges, but now I do not think he is the right man for the job anymore. In the latest issue of Fight magazine there was an article stating that the UFC is worth over a billion dollars. For a company worth over a billion dollars, it is unacceptable to have the face of the company (Dana) behave so unprofessionally. If we find out that the M-1 is being backed by Mark Cuban, then the UFC is in serious trouble, because Cuban knows how to treatr his athletes. I have no idea if Cuban is behind M-1 or not, but if he is, I expect to see many UFC fighters jump ship over to M-1 when there ufc contracts expire.
“I own Randy Couture”………….is he out of his freaking mind? I know Randy is too classy to get involved in a public exchange of words with Dana. But I would really like to hear what Randy has top say about these comments. He should Bitch slap Dana right in his classless, unprofessional mouth!

I love how the spotlight is finally starting to shine on Dana White’s true character! All along, we’ve known that something was fishy behind the scenes of Dana’s shoot-from-the-hip-emotionally business model, but as long as the ship kept sailing smoothly we were willing to look past it with a, “oh, that’s just Dana being Dana” attitude. But now Randy Couture has rocked the boat and made us all take notice and most of us don’t like what we’re seeing at all.
Dana was great for the UFC while taking it from a side-show spectacle into a legitimate sport. I have to give him all the props in the world for that feat. But his way-too-personal approach to running the business is simply not scalable. I truly believe that the UFC’s rise to popularity and legitimacy has peaked under Dana White and if the Fertitta’s don’t either reigh in Dana’s ego or replace him entirely, the UFC could be in big trouble. They need a smart, objective business model which puts the focus on the fighters above all else.
The curtain has been pulled back on the wizard and now we can all see the shady-petty-greedy-don king/vince mcmahon hybrid-stab-you-in-the-back little troll which Dana truly is. Way to go Dana…you screwed up big time this time. You showed everybody that you’re about as capable of running the UFC as George W Bush is running the country. If you had poll numbers, they would probably be approaching W’s right about now.

Get off of Dana’s case. It’s not like any of you could run the UFC HALF as good as what he’s done. And the whole foundation for signing Fedor was to prove that hes NOT the best in the world, and to have him fight in the best organization. It wasn’t just to pay him a million bucks he had lying around…

Read the last sentence.
It says Randy Couture is the powerful villain SARGON not “Invincible” it says he appeared in “Invincible”.
Just fixing the mistake.
“The Scorpion King: Rise of the Akkadian” is the thrilling prequel to “The Scorpion King,” the action blockbuster that starred Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Mathayus, the fearsome warrior king of an ancient desert empire. The new film, a heroic tale of loyalty and betrayal filled with heart-stopping action and thrilling visual effects, tells the story of how the young Mathayus rose to become the Scorpion King. Shot entirely in South Africa, this entertaining blend of myth, magic and muscle is directed by Russell Mulcahy (Resident Evil: Extinction, Highlander) and stars Michael Copon (“Beyond the Break,” Bring It On: In It to Win It) as the young hero Mathayus, Simon Quarterman (“Murder Rooms: The Patient’s Eyes”) as the wily Ari, Karen David (The Colour of Magic) as the beautiful Layla, Ralf Moeller (Pathfinder) as the fierce warrior Pollux, and current six-time Ultimate Fighting Championship king Randy Couture (Invincible), holder of three heavyweight and three light heavyweight titles, as the charismatic and powerful villain Sargon.

I’ve always been a fan of Dana. He runs the business well. The business disagreement in this situation is all Couture’s fault.
That said, Dana has turned into a PR disaster. The guy badly needs to stop talking. If he’d handled this with any class, people would be all over Couture for trying to get away with breaking his word.

That sentence makes no sense. They helped him build the business but he isn’t going to let them make a better deal. He is becoming the Don King of MMA but is leading THE organization. That won’t work in the end. He should be reshuffled in the organization.

But I also agree with those who say Dana talks smack till he has a fighter under contract, then that guy is golden. Wande was an eye-opener along those lines.
Dana is a shrewd businessman, like Sureal wrote. However, if he began to seriously impact the UFC’s bottom line, the Zuffa brothers (I know, it’s not the Zuffa brothers) would choose their baby (UFC) over Dana White. I say give the job to Randy Couture.

Dana White rules!!!
He’s the main reason we’re all here talking about the UFC and mma(along with the owners of the UFC). He’s built this company and this sport and now mma fighters are constantly competing (in competitive fights), they’re well paid, they and live celebrity lifestyles (of course I am referring to the stars). All you tomato cans who complain about him – grow up. He runs a business…and things are not always gonna be pleasant in such a cut-throat industry. It’s clear that there are no business owners or managers visiting this site.
Besides, Fedor IS overrated – big time!! Look at who he’s actually defeated in his career. Sure, he’s dominant when fighting smaller opponents (Lindland), and yes he’s beaten one dimension fighters (Cro Cop) and other overrated fighters (Big Nog, etc); but Fedor’s NEVER faced the type of competition he’d face in the UFC. Couture, Arlovski, Sylvia, etc. would all give Fedor fits. If you ask me, that’s why he refused to sign with the company – he knew he’d be exposed as a GOOD fighter, not the invinsible fighter he was in Pride. This becomes even more apparent when you consider the money he was offered (which was offered because White saw the $$$ that came with his name…not because he’s an out-of-this world fighter…). He turned it down in order to maintain his godlike status (in the mma world) which would certainly be erased shortly after his arrival in the ufc…
All you Fedor lovers are due for a wake-up call when he faces some world class competition. Sorry folks…

I wouldn’t be shocked to see a new UFC President in the near future.
The UFC is doing everything it can to push itself as a legitimate sport, not the WWF. And yet the company’s figurehead is just as outrageous as any wrestling promoter ever seen. The UFC craves national recognition and acceptance; it can’t get that with a loon like Dana in charge.
His language is atrocious. When every interview you give has to be censored, you’ll eventually stop giving interviews. And this Fedor is overrated nonsense is just that. That’s a baby crying because he didn’t get his way. Fedor is one of the greatest mixed martial artists, ever. Big Nog is about to fight for the UFC HW Title, and Fedor beat him twice.
Dana offered Fedor $2M because he would be a great draw? Only hardcore American fans know who Fedor is. He doesn’t have near the name recognition that Tito does. Dana offered Fedor mega $ because he knows how good Fedor is and that he could’ve taken the HW division to a whole new level.
I love Randy Couture. He’s my favorite fighter, ever. But Fedor has fought some of the greatest fighters alive, and has never lost. Randy has also fought some of the greatest fighters alive…and loses about 1/3rd of the time. I love Randy, but this notion that he’d run through Fedor is just plain stupid.

All you Dana haters are f’ed. The guy is running a business. You people blog about it. Dana doesn’t own the ufc, he is a figure head for its owners. What company doesn’t bash the competition? He has every right to sign his fighters to exclusive contracts. What sports league doesn’t? If you play for the NFL, you can’t even go snowboarding after the season. Why let your fighters fight elsewhere and potentially get injured. Now the fighter is useless, and you didn’t get the profits for it. It is a business. How come no one says how stupid Fedors managers are for trying everything to balk the deal. A true champion makes sacrifices, and Fedor wanted to make none. Everyone blames Dana for what happened with Randy. The guy is as old as dirt. He quits via fax. Not very Randy like. The guy didn’t even face his fans and tell them he is done. Why all these money issues now? If there so under paid, how come guys like Jason McDonald can afford to train and not work. If it is that terrible, get a union in there. America is famous for that. There is no massive sponsors for mma (Nike, Adidas ect.) The guy is at the end of his professional sports career, and doesn’t want to fight anybody but Fedor. He is a Hollywood sellout. Thats cool though Randy, Get all the Bread you can get your hands on. We ain’t mad at you.

Before I start to speak my mind I just want to say I hate Dana White, I always have and i always will but he does have a point. Randy is walking away for his contract which is a bitch thing to do and as much as I want to see this fight you can’t blame Dana. Fedor is the one who doesn’t want to fight Randy and if you disagree your stupid.Fedor knows that this is too much of a risk for his career. Dana White is a piece of shit but I really belief he did what he could to try to sign Fedor but it just didn’t happen. I know i’m going to get a lot of negative comments about what I say next but it is the truth. Randy is a bitch for walking away for the UFC. I have a lot of respect the guy but he should think about the fans too. We want to see him fight and it was his choice to sign another contract and he needs to be a man about it and finish his contract and yes its bullshit that he is not the highest paid fighter because he should be paid the most. What he is doing at his age is insane but it really doesn’t show any class from Randy walking away like this why not finish his contract and then if M-1 takes him, which they should, then he can fight Fedor but Dana is not going to let this go without a fight. I just want to say that whatever anyone has to say about what I wrote is okay because everyone knows that Randy needs to finish his contract no matter if he fights Fedor in the UFC or not. He signed the contract so he should finish he contract.

He is just a businessman. Any decision he makes is likely to be influenced by how much money he can make. Often his decisions are not good for UFC as a sport. A prime example is the debacle that was the Bisping v Hamill fight. It was important that Bisping came out as the winner as he is mostly responsible for UFC’s popularity in the UK. It’s a pity corruption finally appears to have crept into the sport. Peace to all genuine UFC fans.

It is a sad day.
Time will basically heal it all….. but lets keep the drama in the ring and not in the business. That’s what makes UFC awesome.
Dana took a completely dying sport and turned it into a legitimate fan based, money making machine.
Randy fought in a dying sport and stuck it out to become the sports most respected fighter and made fortunes doing it.
The sport has been good to both and Dana and Randy were good for each other.
An agreement was forged and a contract signed. UFC was the stage for Randy. Ego’s aside….honor the agreement and at that point if you bail then more power to you.
Fans will still love and watch Randy wherever he goes, just maybe with a little less respect than before. He was always the pillar of class….. bailing on a contract unfortunately tarnishes that somewhat although he will still always be the man!
I hate to see all the crap being slung in both directions…… let the parties to be work it out and keep the faith gang. UFC and Dana is here to stay, Randy is here until he hangs it up for good and becomes an MMA hall of famer that he truly is…..
You will be sorely missed here Randy…….. but you can bet we will be tuning in to watch you wherever you land….
Dana…….keep it going…..you have my respect.
Peace.
