Report: Visa issues delay the arrival of Anderson Silva for UFC 77

Props: MMAWeekly.com
Quoteworthy:
"Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight champion Anderson Silva has yet to arrive for this Saturday's event at the U.S. Bank Arena.... According to sources close to the Silva, he had planned to be in town by now along with the other UFC 77 fighters, but there were delays in the issuance of his work visa. Apparently, due to a recent holiday, government offices in Brazil were closed this past Friday and Monday thus delaying his visa being issued. He evidently did receive the visa on Wednesday and hopes to arrive in Cincinnati on Thursday. With Silva arriving just two days prior to his fight, as long as there are no further delays, questions are sure to abound as to whether or not it will affect his performance come Saturday night."
-- Silva is booked to defend his 185-pound crown against former division champion Rich Franklin during the UFC 77: "Hostile Territory" main event on October 20 at the U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio.

I don’t know if most people know this but Brazil and the US immigration agencies do not really work well together.

At least they are close to the same time zone. And as for the Climate changes, he can just stay indoors.

Weird, a government holiday on both Monday and Friday of the same week? And people wonder why they can’t clean up the crime and drug trafficing there? How about doing all that first and THEN start taking holidays. =\ That place is a mess but I guess that’s also why so many great fighters come from there – they fight for their lives everyday.

I don’t now squat about the issuance of a work visa, but if you know you have a fight coming up and its in the USA why wouldn’t you get this taken care of a month earlier or so, so you won’t have these types of delays.

I think he didn’t get his visa on purpose just so he wont have to LOOSE his title. LOL
Then Dana went down there and gave him the “do you want to be an FU@&!@& fighter” talk…
Going to be a good fight… Can’t wait.

He should have been in the states a week ago!

All he has to do is say he is Mexican and enter in through the Texas border. No biggie.

I hope he makes it on time, he would maybe have to give up the belt.

Silva has a built-in excuse after Franklin kicks his ass back across the border.
by PW on Oct 18, 2007 1:47 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
It should not be a problem for Silva at all. The time zone change will be minimal, so there won’t be any problem with jet lag. He’ll be fine.

Rich Franklin is going to win this fight. He has more pressure on him than Silva cause if Silva loses he will get an immediate rematch and Franklin is fighting in front of his fans and home. Franklin will pass this test, just wait and see this Saturday.

You think by now that will all the visa troubles that the UFC has been facing lately, that they would have a department in helping fighters secure visas? Would be a nice gesture towards the fighters by reducing fighter stress.
Whether or not Franklin beats Silva or vice-versa may depend on who Rich has in his camps. Rumors are is that he has been working with Matt Hume, someone many people believe is a uber-trainer, always finds a way for his fighters to defeat his their opponent. We will see if Hume is working wonders for Franklin come Saturday.

Off Subject: JOHN, this is what I was referring to earlier that you asked me to put in new thread:
“ViolentMike: I herd you were 1st in line for your Authentic Randy Couture Scorpion King Costume! lol "
“LOL, actually I was so giddy when I saw it, that last night I made my own from scratch, using a cardboard box, some random lengths of chain, aluminun foil, washable markers, a screen door, several 80’s style slap on bracelettes, leather pants, 3 female accesorizing belts, and a "bald person wig’. And to think that I was just wondering what to be for Halloween,…. "

why? out of fear that he might actually kill franklin in the ring and be extradited back to brazil?

That’s exactly what I was thinking. But since we always hear of problems like this, I’d imagine that this type of visa needs to be aquired within X amount of days from travel date. That would have sucked if he couldn’t make it…

That’s a great idea, re: a UFC dept. to help handle all the visas.
Is MATT HUME really working with Franklin? Hmm..

He could make the run from Brazil, beat three to four asses on the way and still show up in time to break Franklin’s nose.
Just kidding, going to be a good fight

Anderson Silva got into trouble when he was overheard saying he promised to drop bombs on Rich.
by Pat on Oct 18, 2007 5:59 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
That is what I hear, Hume is working with Franklin. It makes too much sense for it not to happen. Hume is viewed as a all-world trainer, has some sort of voodoo-magic in breaking down opponents. Franklin needs something to change, comes in with a new approach, or else he can expect to lose again. So Franklin calls upon Humes to be better for the fight. This makes me think the Rich we will see in Cincinnati will be a lot better. Whether it is good enough to defeat Franklin is something totally different.

you remember rich saying he well throw hands with anyone in the ufc before their first fight, if he tries to stand up with this gut he’ll get knocked out again.

The girls are sexy but the country is not good, its really poor, plus I heard if you have a grand to your name then you are considered rich, I have no idea if this is true but if it is then trust me no american wants to live there.

..Both my parents are from Brazil..and I lived there for some time and depends on where you are in the country. Parts of Brazil looks like a third world country..and others first world..in general Brazil is out of this world. The money is ( Reais..Real )you say it like “Real” Madrid..and its to the dollar what the dollar is to the pound.
It goes from $1 = R$ 2.24 ..it goes up and down..at one point when I was living there.. it was $1 = R$2.05.
if you have $1000 = you’ll have more than R$2000. If you are in Sao Paulo.. Rio..it is expense ..like Copacabana..Ipanema..Botafogo..Flamengo…Gloria..so if you have a $1000 and not expansive taste habits..but you want still go out..and party..you’ll be good for a little over a month if you budget it right..Just know it’s not like it 17years ago..when everything was mad jeap for the dollar.
UFC should market Brazil..U have an abundence of fighters..it’s culture is Soccer,MMA/BJJ, and in lot of places volleyball. I think Rio Maracana..stadium which fits roughly 100,000..would be an insane event ( but I know the security budget would have to be on point )..or in a city like Sao Paulo..which is like the New York of Brazil..Shit I remember seeing UFC Brazil in Sao Paulo..when Wandi got knocked out in 44 seconds by Vitor…“the old Vitor”

I think Silva could arrive in Cinci 30 minutes before the fight and win. IMO Rich has to win standing and that is still a tough burden to bear against The Spider. Plus fighting in Cinci just adds pressure. GL Ace.
