Fedor Emelianenko to announce future fight plans at NYC press conference at Marc Ecko Enterprises

fedor at ufc 75

Fedor Emelianenko will make his first-ever trip to New York City to announce his future plans in mixed martial arts on Monday, October 22, which will more than likely include his intentions of fighting under the M-1 banner.

Vadim Finkelstein -- the manager for Fedor Emelianenko -- recently sold the Russian promotion to an unknown "major American investor." It's been the subject of heated debate and will hopefully be clarified at the swank Manhattan office of fashion designer, Marc Ecko.

Here's the snip:

"Fedor Emelianenko, the most sought after MMA fighter in the world with a record of 26-1 with one no-contest, will be in New York City for the first time to announce his decision on which professional fighting organization he will join. Fedor, as he is known by the millions of MMA fans, has been heavily recruited by many fighting organizations. Fedor is recognized as the best and most feared MMA fighter on the planet."

The decision of the PRIDE FC heavyweight champion to not fight inside the Octagon sent shockwaves through the mixed martial arts world, leading to the resignation of reigning UFC Heavyweight Champion, Randy Couture. "The Natural" mentioned a desire to fight Emelianenko as one of the primary reasons for his departure.

Lucky bastard, er, Jesse Holland from UFCmania.com intends to attend the 5:30 p.m. event. We hope to have a full report of the press conference right here on Monday evening.

Hey guys, here’s a theory. Maybe in Fedor’s mind he’s the number 1 fighter with nothing to prove. If you were 26-1, why would care about getting called out by a guy who’s 16-8 (?). He wants what he wants, and if the UFC doesn’t pony up, then fuck ‘em. That being said, I’d love to see the fight with hopefully a Couture victory.

Well I’m afraid, afraid that Fedor will fight Zulu again and again in this M1 org. because who else is there not signed? oh wait FE could fight Baby Face Barnett, I mean that series of fights could last, what two years? Is that how long its been since a contender squared off against FE? He has a great manager though, I’m sure he’s making millions of Rubles,1 Russian ruble = 0.040128 U.S. dollars

Fedor is a smart fighter, he knows he is ranked #1 and he thinks he the most marketable figher on the planet, he thinks he should be getting paid millions, but there are too many tangibles here, is his popularity will be as big as it was in Japan or Russia, cause in Russia he and the president are best buds.

Right, that makes zero sense at all, unless Mark Ecko was the person from the US with all the money – although HIGHLY unlikely. I still suspect Mark Cuban.

Also, why wouldn’t Fedor make this ‘huge’ announcement in his beloved Russia? I mean, that’s where he’s from, that’s where M-1 is, and his love for Russia was the main reason he didn’t sign with the UFC (would not sacrafice the Russian Sambo tournament for the UFC).

How many times do these fighters have to be compared. They both are very gifted fights and are both considered (whether you believe it or not) to be the best fighters in the world…
Even if Fedor does think hes better and doesnt think he has anything to prove the Fans deserve it and so does the whole MMA Organization.

I thought Fedor was undefeated. who is his 1 loss to???

Tsuyoshi Kohsaka back in a 2000 Rings Tournament. He suffered a cut in his fight with Ricardo Arona, and had to forfeit against Kohsaka, due to Tournament rules, a fighter cannot take a no-contest, so he had to take a loss for it.

Pop Quiz, if Fedor had been able to fight and had beaten Kohsaka, who would he have met in the finals that day?

It was due to an accidental headbutt(not allowed but since it was incidental, no DQ was ordered) by Tsuyoshi Kohsakawhich caused a cut on his forehead that resulted in a doctor stoppage. The fight was ruled as a loss for Fedor due to the rules of the tournament for KOK 2000 not providing a No Contest.

Your more accurate than I was, Fedor said that the illegal elbow re-opened a cut that he suffered against Arona. In most cases Fedor would have won the fight via DQ or no contest, but since he could not advance due to the injury, he had to take a loss.

Correction – Elbow, not headbutt

Nope, he would have faced Randy Couture in the semi finals. Randy defeated Kohsaka in the semifinals then lost to Overeem by submission.

Its just not in the cards I guess. Sigh.

I live in Dallas and this has Mark Cuban written all over it. I’d bet my house on it.

After watching this video: http://www.wfaa.com/video/index.html?nvid=184302&shu=1

…you can clearly see that Mark is serious about getting into the MMA arena and if you know Mark like people from Dallas know Mark, he plays to win at ALL COSTS so if there was a way to buy Fedor to make his new MMA org the best in the world you can bet your ass that’s exactly what he did.

I agree Mike…why is Fedor making the anouncement in the U.S.? I’m getting more and more curious as to who this secret investor is. I guess it makes sense if they are trying to market the M-1 product in the U.S. It could get interesting if this investor has deep pockets. With the Couture situation, it wouldn’t suprise me if some other UFC fighters start looking at M-1 or other promotions.

by SECX on Oct 18, 2007 12:44 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Cuban would be at the top of my list also:

He has basically said the HDNet Fights was a beta test for something big to come, and he was very interested in Fedor.

It would make also sense for him to launch with Fedor, but only if he has a decent talent list of serious contendors to fight him. It would bring in the hardcores and could be marketed heavily to the TUF-generation. Hence, the Mark Ecko, extravagant announcement that is designed to get major press.

Also, Ed Fishman said he has been working with the new owner of M-1, but also he has said he has been working with Cuban.

Unless he really is talking about two separate individuals, it really could be Cuban.

For YOU he has no dignity but even Randy Couture has said that guys in UFC are not being compensated the way they should and more importantly COULD be getting paid in comparison to what the company is making off of each Pay Per View. Fedor is just doing what Frank Shamrock has said that more fighters should do in order to TRULY bring about change in MMA and that is the fighters need to realize that THEY are the attraction not the name of the organization they fight for.

If Randy’s “resignation” is really a way for him to get out of UFC and make a fight with Fedor happen possibly outside of the country that would shake up the MMA world.

Ken Shamrock has called out Fedor to a fight. There might be a Fedor/Shamrock fight at M-1.

I pray that Shamrock and Fedor fight and I want Shamrock to snap Fedor’s ankle.

If Fedor truely was number 1 why would he be taking fights from M-1 and not the UFC, or StrikeForce or something that has some potential talent.

I give a fuck about Fedor now. He’s had his chance to prove that he’s #1 and he traded it to compete in Sambo. He may be getting more money up front but it will pale in comparison to all the exposure and endorsements he would make with the UFC. The average Joe doesn’t know who Fedor is but he would if his ugly mug was plastered all over our country’s tv and billboards. Now he gets to fight a bunch of nobodies and add a few more no-name wins to his record which already lacks a lot of big name wins. Decisions over Cro Cop and Big Nog? I need to see more before giving him title as #1. This is UFCMania not M-1Mania so let’s all just forget about Fedor and allow him to slip further and further into obscurity.

I don’t think Cuban is the buyer. He seems like he’s happy to develop his own show and slowly build it up, similiar to what Zuffa is doing with the WEC.

He even stated that he’s not going to try to compete with the UFC anytime soon, since HDNet only has 7 million viewers, compared to Spike’s 93 million.

What better way to jump start an organization than by bringing in the #1 fighter in the world. UFC fans may want to dismiss him, but it’s a big world out there and aside from his U.S. fans, Fedor is recognized worldwide (and by Couture himself).

by jameson on Oct 18, 2007 8:19 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

No one should be mad at Fedor for signing with M-1. The sport itself has too much politics,(like anything else that involves a lot of money). It is a shame that him and Couture didn’t fight because that would be an excellent fight. It wouldn’t even matter who wins, Fedor or Couture; both of them are excellent fighters with a lot of passion for sport and respect for each other. Both of them deserve a title. Even if and when Fedor looses, so what. That happens, MMA sport is such that anyone can loose, you just need one mistake or bad night, they are all people. No one should be mad at Fedor for not signing with UFC, or at Couture for quiting the UFC… its a shame they didn’t meet. Both are excellent fighters…. they are setting standards for other fighters

For once in my life, I am pulling for Ken Shamrock.

Shamrock?… Ken Shamrock? Fedor would dump him on his head so fast… 30 sec. fight, tops.

Fedor vs Shamrock? what a joke.No contest who’s going to win.
I prefer Josh Barnett though. If i remember correctly,he’s the one who earlier this year, call out Fedor.I think he deserve a shot a lot more than Ken the oldish fucking moron.

by tralalala on Oct 19, 2007 4:55 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

It’s gotta be contractual issues. I can’t see Fedor being afraid of a fight with Randy, or with anybody at that matter. He’s never lost and his confidence in his ability is through the roof.

As for reality, of course any fight can get beat on any given day. That’s one of the reasons why MMA is so exciting.

Fedor is still #1 in my mind until someone beats him.

by googan on Oct 19, 2007 8:06 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

We’ve all played the game, “follow the leader” before. Ergo, if Fedor goes to M-1, then I’m watching M-1, regardless of who he fights. Fedor fans: agree?

Disagree, I’m not paying 50 bucks to watch Fedor fight a nobody that he is going to crush. I pay to watch fights, not slaughters.

That’s punny.

by The Truth on Oct 19, 2007 1:23 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

My two cents, Fedor is scared, the guy has fought some great fights, but almost every fighter that has come from Pride has had their ass handed to them in the UFC, end of story. He wants to hide behind the Russian championships, he wants to fight people that are under his caliber of fighters, hey who can blame him, milk it for all the money its worth. I am positive UFC would expand his fan base, and make him a ton more money, that is if he won. After seeing Crocop get whooped on, I think Fedor wants to live out his champion hype instead of testing it in UFC.

by TacoBell on Oct 20, 2007 11:59 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

A bunch of UFC die hard fans who think talent does not exist outside of it. And, don’t give me this UFC > Pride nonsense, its vastly different fighting in a cage vs fighting in a ring. The cage allows people to use the sides to their benefit and the shape of the octagon does not allow fighters to trap opponents, which CroCop was famous for in the ring. Fedor didn’t sign with UFC because of many contractual problems that UFC uses to keep its fighters exclusive. ITT they would not allow him to do Sambo tournaments. He is not scared. He is not a sale out. He is staying true to the sport and M-1 signed him for 10million dollars which is way above greedy ass UFC’s pay.

Fedor is the best ever man, if he aint signing with UFC its all becuase of contract issues a fighter of this rep and skills needs to get paid good and Dana White isnt accomodating accordingly… would fedor come to UFC he’ll styl be unstoppable…

from the guy who thinks that Randy, Mr 16-9 Couture could in his wildest of dreams even last past the first round with Fedor, to the guy who thinks the aging and over the hill Shamrock who cant even beat Tito Ortiz would stand a chance, to who claim that Pride fighters didnt do well in the UFC when Big Nog went on to become champ (before losing to Mir), to who seem to overlook the fact that Fedor is now:
7-0 against UFC champs

You read that right, 7-0 vs UFC champs.
