Wanderlei Silva: 'I was tested' for steroids in Japan

Props: Yahoo!Sports.com
Quoteworthy:
"Actually, they do test in Japan. I was tested before and after my fights in Japan. But if you are thinking of Mirko (Cro Cop) and Shogun as examples, Mirko may have lost because he has so many other things going on in his life, such as his duty in government, and his business. Shogun went through a lot of changes before he fought in the UFC. He changed his home, he changed his training, and he changed fighting organizations. I don't know why they lost their fights in the UFC; only Shogun and Mirko understand the reasons why they lost."
-- Former PRIDE FC middleweight champion and current UFC light heavyweight contender Wanderlei Silva responds to a question about steroid testing in Japan during a recent question and answer session and much more. "The Axe Murderer" is excited to return to action in December at UFC 79 and end a two-fight losing streak. His likely opponent is former 205-pound champion Chuck Liddell.

Does anyone have a reason to not believe what Wandy
has to say?
I think it shows a lot of respect amongst the fighters to have Wandy mention Cro Cop in the same breath as Shogun.
If anyone thinks Wandy isn’t learning from the mistakes of PrideFC’s fallen has got to get a clue.
The Axe Murderer is here…and dangerous.
He beats Chuck, straight to Forrest or Jardine…
I’d like to see a couple of earned fights before having Rampage V. Wandy III. Somebody has got to work in Lyoto in the top rankings, he needs a name as a win.. granted.. he’s not that exciting…granted… he’s also undefeated. The LHW division could take a turn in an opposite direction in one night… Love it!

Ps. It is dissapointing that we are still talking about steroids… maybe we need two pro leagues for everysport.
The Juicers and the non Juicers… NFL-NHL-MLB-MLS-PGA etc…
every league has a mirrored juice league.
Which one would you watch? (assuming society has abandoned most of our sports ethics).

Did everyone click the link to yahoo can read the whole Q/A article – its fantastic.
So, Wandi says that he was tested before and after his fights. Who tested him? It wasn’t PRIDE (to my prior understanding), so did they have an outside agency do it? Was it the Japanese government? It has been widely acknowledged around these parts that there was no drug testing done over in PRIDE. These claims were highlighted by Rampage and Juanito, accusing the Chute Box team of “juicing” since there was no testing “over there”. My question is, with all of this chatter about PRIDE not testing their fighters, why wouldnt a fighter that fought in PRIDE step up and say that those accusations are wrong, and that they were tested. For example, if every fighter was tested before/after a fight, then wouldn’t you think that someone like a Dan Henderson would have spoken up and said that he was tested for his fights? I don’t know. Either the Rampage/Juanito rumors are false, Wandi is flat out lying, or Wandi was tested for the 2 PRIDE events in the USA, and that is all he is referring to…
Here are some other points I found interesting in the Q/A:
Everyone knows that Wandi wants to fight Chuck, surprise surprise. But, most people on this site assume that he would also like to get a fight with Tito to avenge his loss. WHen asked about fighting Tito, he said, “No, I want to fight Liddell. I’ve thought about fighting Tito, and if he rises back to the top of the weight class, maybe I would fight him then.” Good for him. It would be a waste of time fighting Tito right now. If Wandi goes on a win streak, he’ll be fighting for the belt after 2 fights (Liddell then either Griffin or Jardine). BUT, say he loses his first fight to Liddell, he is not getting fast tracked to Rampage and the title. So who better for him to fight than Tito if that were to happen. I think that Wandi losing to Chuck is the only chance at seeing Wandi/Tito anytime soon. BUT, Tito would more than likely duck from that fight…
Silva was asked who the best fighters lb for lb are, he said, “I would say the top fighters pound-for-pound in the light heavyweight class are Shogun, Liddell and Lyoto Machida. Other fighters that I think are good are (Takanori) Gomi, (Gilbert) Melendez, Ninja (Murilo Rua) and Cyborg (Fedor Emelianenko).” He is still given Chuck love, when no one else is. If Wandi was not in the UFC and had no chance at fighting Chuck, I don’t think he would have listed him in there – but I could be wrong, he’s respected Chuck for years. He obviously mentions Ninja ONLY because they grew up and trained together. That name shouldn’t be anywhere close to the best lb for lb fighters. But the name that surpised me the most was Gilbert Melendez. He had 2 fights in PRIDE, defeating Kawajiri the Crusher in one of them. I am shocked that Wandi mentioned Gilbert.
And about training with Randy, “He is a very busy man. He hasn’t had much time to train me but he opened his academy to me and I can train with the other guys, who are all very good fighters — in his academy.” Maybe as the fight with Chuck gets closer, he can bribe Randy to hang around and teach him some more, at a fairly reasonable price.

Speaking of Gilbert, does anyone know where I can view the Clay Guida vs Gilbert Melendez fight that happened in June of last year in Strikeforce? I went to youtube and dailymotion and searched for ‘melendez guida’ and got no results.
Any suggestions? Because I am sure that there are other people here that would enjoy watching that fight as well. Its a title fight, and it goes all 5 rounds. I won’t say who won incase someone has a link, I don’t want to spoil the ending for anyone that doesn’t already know.

Comparing baseball roids to mma roids I think runs into 1 huge difference. Roids has been regulated in MMA in the states for a while now, though Sherk’s case seems to be getting special treatment. Baseball owners, Selig, managers, and other players looked the other way for years, the most popular years at that. With MMA at least in the states they have been concerned with it since they have applied the rules. What will make Wandy more succesfull then Shogun and Cro Cop is that fact that he started in the cage. The first half of his career was with UFC so he should be able to transition smoothly. The factors of ring vs. cage vary greatly effect all individuals differently.

Ladies and Gentleman, The AXE MURDERER is here. Props to wandy, its good to see that a freaking animal like him can act civil and professional. Personally, I am sick of the steroid talks about Pride. Rampage is one of my top 3 favorite fighters worldwide, but unless someone other than Rampage and his camp speaks out about it, I aint buying it. We arent in Japan, this is America, last time I checked you are innocent until proven guilty. With that said, until someone has some kind of proof, I aint buying the whole steroids in Pride stuff. Is it possible, absolutly, but I need to see more than Rampage and Juanito’s words until I buy it.
Wanderlei brings up a great point about Mirco that we rarely talk about on here. Mirco might be the busiest fighter next to Randy. Mirco has done movies, he is a freakin Senator for crying out load. I am not ready to give up on Mirco yet. Especially now that Randy is retired. Randy is the only Heavyweight in the UFC that in my oppinion Mirco could not beat. Mirco has a shot against everyother Heavyweight in the division, if he refocuses. Is Mirko done? Probably. Can he still be a Force? YES. Hopefully Randy’s retirement and Mirco’s disgraceful performances in the Octagon will light a fire under Mirco’s ass to try 1 last push for the title. I would like to see Mirko either fight Arlovski or the looser of the Brandon Verra vs. Sylvia fight.
Depending on how long Forrest is out for, with a win against Liddell, Wandy could get a quicker title shot than many of us believe. Especially since he holds 2 destructive wins over the champ and Rampage is dying to avenge his losses to anyone that has beaten him in the past (since he blames his losses on a lack of conditioning). I believe Rampage is a much better and more discaplined fighter that he was in Pride… So he could very well Whoop Wandy’s ass next time.
LOL No one wants to fight Tito, cuz he is a bum and beating Tito does nothing to propel ones career. I love it.
Last night I watched countdown to UFC 77 and Juanito had wonderful things to say about Verra. Juanito knows whats up. I hold juanitto’s oppinions about fighters in a high reguard and he said Verra WILL be HW champ of the world. Thats a quality endorsement for Verra. Swamp thing Sylvia better watch it come saturday.

WANDERLEI SILVA is the fighter that really got me excited about MMA. i’d already been interested in the UFC since way back when they fought tourny style and there were no weight classes and very few rules. wanderlei sort of takes me back. he’s aggressive, kind of wild, and vicious.i loved watching him in pride fc and am very much looking forward to seeing him have an all out war against chuck liddell. i think wanderlei is too aggressive for chuck. he’s crazy when he fights and only focuses on finishing his opponent. personally i think he’s going to destroy and retire chuck! after that he might go after hendo and avenge that loss, from pride, which he never had a chance to do before the ufc took over. you just know that wanderlei wants, and is headed for a collision course with rampage, for the 3rd time. the1st two times he destroyed rampage severely. rampage is in better shape now and has alot more confidence but the two brutal beatings that he got from wanderlei has got to play a factor in his mind. i believe that wanderlei is the most brutal and focused fighter in the ufc, and he will be lhw champion in due time leaving a few devestated fighters in his wake, including chuck. there’s a reason bas rutten nicknamed him “THE AXE MURDERER”! don’t let his pleasent demenor outside the ring fool you. when he’s serious, he’s vicious! chuck will not last 3rds,no way!

the ufc has a great welterweight divison and the lightweight division is stacked as well. the difference in fighters is that you’ve got guys like jake shields that want to step up and fight the best.than you’ve got fighters that are happy where they’re at,making money doing what they want to do,content.so,what the fuck is all this bullshit about how great gilbert melendez is! has he fought, spenser fisher, sam stout, bj penn,or any other good name from the ufc lw division. when he does decide to take the step up,atleast for competition sake, and proves he’s one of the best, amongst the best, than i’ll give him some respect!NOT UNTIL!

Actually Fedor Emelianenko was given the nickname “The Last Emperor” by Japanese Fans in Pride. I also think I heard him compared to a cyborg on a lot of their show due to his emotionless facial expressions. That being said I still think Wandy meant Evangelista Santos when he refered to Cyborg

I’m a massive Pride fc fan and this obviously makes me a huge wanderlei silva fan! But I must admit watching Pride fights wanderlei size and muscle mass does seem to ask questions concerning steroids. I know he will weight in at 205lbs but if you watch his fights sometimes his shoulders and chest seem huge so much so, that I think he must come in at 225lb come fight night and then if you watch his last few fights he strikes me as much smaller so much so that I dont think he has cut any weight. And if you go back to his ufc days he looks even smaller. This to me suggests that maybe towards the end of his pride days, steroid testing was going on.
I hope I’m wrong as wanderlei is my hero and has never ducked a fight!

Testing concerning UFC:
I have done a bit of research on that topic:
- testing of ufc fighters (and all other licensed orgs) depends on the state’s regulations where the event takes place
- states’ athlethic commissions differ:
a) concerning what they test for: for most ufc events taking place in CA and NV: CSAC are testing for steroids and anabolic derivates; NSAC does normally only look for “illegal drugs” like thc, cocaine a.s.o
b) they have different policies od sanctioning fighters proving positive: fines are low, usually up to 2.500 $; fighters’ licenses are taken away 3-12 month, decisions seem to be made in very inconsistent ways
- since fighters are being tested immediately before/after their fights, there is normally little chance to prevent positive fighters from taking part in the event
- generally only few fighters within each event are being tested
- there are no further consequences neither for the fighters found positive nor for the organisations apart from the above-mentioned: no titles are withdrawn, no fight results are re-adjusted to “no contest”
- Fight organisations up to now do not seem to care at all: ufc “president” d. white said he could not do anything more than let the athletic commissions do their work – seems that they are, as usually, only caring for the big money
…sad but true
