Tim Sylvia: 'The old Tim is back' against Brandon Vera at UFC 77

Tim Sylvia UFC fighter talks about Pride FC fighters

Former heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia is injury-free and has a new boxing coach, declaring to the Canadian Press that the "Old Tim is Back."

You know, the guy who punted Tre Telligman's head into the third row at UFC 54 and stopped guys like Andrei Arlovski, Ricco Rodriguez, Gan McGee and Wes Sims with strikes? Not the one who was content grinding out snooze-fests against Arlovski, Assuerio Silva and Jeff Monson.

That Tim.

Here's a snip:

"... the game plans we put together (against Andrei Arlovski and Jeff Monson) were to go out there and win, at all costs, but do it safely [under former boxing coach Matt Pena]. Some of my last few fights haven't been that exciting so I just hired a new boxing coach (Teddy Mueller). I'm doing a few different things and I think the old Tim's back, the guy that went out there and knocked people out the first and second round. So I'm going to go out there and give it my best and try and knock Brandon out. Being the fighter that I am, I'm not the type of guy that likes to go to a decision. I'm not the kind of guy that likes to do ground and pound or submissions, I want to knock the guy out standing up."

"The Mainiac" will have the opportunity to showcase his refined skills against undefeated talent Brandon Vera at UFC 77: "Hostile Territory" this weekend during the co main event at the U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio.

It's a fight that pits perhaps the biggest fighter in the division (6'8", 265 pounds) against it's smallest (6'2", 220 pounds). In fact, Vera admits that he can make the 205-pound light heavyweight limit "without even trying."

The size difference is something that clearly doesn't concern "The Truth" much. And it may not be such a huge factor since it is just a three-round bout.

But the "old" Sylvia has demonstrated that if he hits you on the button, more often than not, he puts you to sleep. Furthermore, he has never been knocked out -- just two submission defeats and a unanimous decision loss are the only blemishes on his record.

Put simply, this is a very difficult fight for Vera if indeed the old Tim is back.

Im not a Tim fan but, I think the truth is in for a rude awakining. Experience is key to this fight and on top of Tim’s size he clearly has the experience advantage as well.

Im really pulling for Vera in this fight. Im super glad hes back and I hope he continues his win streak. Ive never liked Sylvia. He should go back to taking dance lessons. wah wah wahhhhhhh

I am banking on Vera winning. Sylvia better where his depends, he has been known to poop his pants from time to time

Wasn’t the old Tim Sylvia the one that was stripped of a championship belt due to testing positive for a banned substance?

I hope Vera wins, but it’s a tough one for him.

i think tims best chance to win this fight would be to fight from the outside and use his jab effectivly keeping the littler vera outside. For the sake of excitment i hope that he decides to just bang out until one of them falls. I believe the winner of this fight will fight the winner of nogueira vs. kongo for the vacated heavyweight title.

by matt on Oct 17, 2007 11:21 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

SO IN OTHER WORDS HES SAYING THAT WHEN HE HAS THE BELT HES A PUSSY ASS BORING FIGHTER THAT JUST TRIES TO GET A VICTORY BY DECISION. I hate Sylvia and am so glad we finally get to see him get dominated..even more than Couture already dominated him. Sylvias lucky hes as big as he is because he would not stand a chance otherwise. A guy that hopes for his 1 big KO shot every fight is not a good fighter. He never has a gameplan other than to use his reach and try for that big shot. Hes a slow joke of a giant that will finally learn the truth of how much of a CHUMP he is!

That still just sounds so odd to me…Vacated Heavyweight Title. Sad but true.

Matt, I agree completely. I would like to see the looser of Sylvia vs. Verra fight Cro cop. Then we can match up Gonzago vs. either Arlovski or the looser of the Kongo vs. Noguerra fight.

If those scenario’s happen, it could help sort out the mess that is the UFC Heavyweight division with the unexpected departure of Couture, and Emelianenko signing with M-1

If the ‘old’ Tim really does show up, Vera will find himself in a lot of trouble. Right around the time of the Tre “Half Chest” Telligman destruction, Timmy was a mad man on a tear. You can see the vengence in his eyes. He wanted another shot at the title, badly, and it showed! If THAT Timmy shows up, Vera is in trouble. However, if we get the same old boring Timmy that we’ve grown accustomed to, then I expect Vera to bang out a decision.

The 2 main questions I have going into this fight are:

1) Which Timmy will show up?

and

2) Can Vera KO Timmy?

Timmy has never been KO’d and he has fought against some LARGE and powerful HW’s. I am REALLY rooting for this fight to end via KO – it would be a first for either fighter (getting KO’d).

Rampage’s trainer Juanito sang some very high praises about Verra last night. In my oppinion Juanito is one of the very top trainers in MMA. Juanito clearly stated that Verra will be the Heavyweight Champ of the UFC sometime soon. Which makes me stop and think Verra might really be the truth. At his size, a win over the Giant Sylvia will verify that he belongs at heavyweight.

People seem to forget what an amazing pedigree verra has:
His Greco Roman wrestling his fantastic (I have seen him suplex people right thru the mat).
His Muy Tai is just straight Nasty.
His Ju Jitsu is solid.
He is the much much quicker fighter
He has many more things going for him the Big Tim.

What can we say possitive about Sylvia:
He has a reach advantage over anyone that he will fight
He hits hard
He has webbed feet which help with traction while in the Octagon. Ok, I just made that part up.

Its hard for Big Tim to predict what Verra will do come saturday. On the other hand the whole world knows what Tim will do. He will use his range, and look to land the big Punch. How about Dana white last night talking about Timmy needing to get his hand speed back (as if he possessed Floyd Maywhether type speed in the past)

i hope what he’s saying is true and the old tim really is back because regardless of if you like sylvia or not, the dude could fight and he could hit hard…i just hope his back is going to be 100 percent going into this fight, there’s no way he would say anything about it if it was still bothering him, but he sounds like its not a problem, and watching the countdown last night, it looks like he’s going to be in great shape for this fight, i’m really looking forward to it…

I don’t see Vera winning. I don’t think that he has the power at heavyweight to knock out Sylvia. I also don’t see Sylvia tapping. Frank Mir snapped his forearm in two and he didn’t even wince. Vera’s only chance of winning is by the judges score cards. Since Sylvia hates going the distance and wants to return as his former self, I see him winning by KO 3 minutes into the second round at the latest.

This is what I’ve been saying since this fight was announced. On paper, this fight looks very bad for Vera. Trust me, I’ve fought guys 40 lbs heavier than me and its not fun whether its on the feet or on the ground. Actually, if Tim can get the top position on Vera on the ground, it will be very tough for The Truth to get out of that.

Oh another Tim Slyvia article, this is about as exciting as his match with Jeff Monson!

I hope Vera knocks him out, but then no matter what after the match we will have to listen to either Tim showboat if he wins or pout when he loses.

Too bad I am going to this event, I might have to hear him talk for 30 minutes, then ask for 45 dollar leaving to go to the bathroom fee, accompanied by a Tim Slyvia autograph for an additonal 5 dollars.

Vera has been training everywhere during the past year. And he’s been training with the best. He went to Thailand to improve his already great Muay Thai. He went to the Philippines and trained hand-to-hand combat. He went to Big Bear to train with Rampage and Juanito Ibarra. Then he puts it all together with his main trainers, masters Lloyd Irvin and Rob Kaman.

Too bad for Tim that this fight didn’t happen when it was supposed to (before the Couture fight), because I think he was actually better than Brandon then. But Brandon is the better fighter now, and he’ll show it on Saturday.

The Truth is here and he ain’t going anywhere.

I’m no Sylvia fan, but I don’t see Vera winning this fight either. Vera’s not going to be able to win this fight from the outside and I’m just not sure he’s got the size or the power to handle Sylvia on the inside.

I do, however, predict another snooze-fest. It’s gonna suck, big time, if Sylvia eventually recaptures the belt.

Either fighter can get KO’d at any time. You don’t have to be the stronger striker to knock somebody out.

Thanks for the insight, Vera is a pure athlete, that is obvious, he’a like a big GSP in that he has a whole tool set of weapons, and this is the type of complete MMA fighter that will hold titles in the future.

What I really like about Silvia is his new training style and new boxing coach… Silvia legitimately has had surgery on his ruptured disc’s and has lost weight… I really like what I see.. Fighting and losing to Randy C. may be the best thing to have happened to him at this point, Tim has lots of experience and has seen some wars in the ring.

GOOD LUCK on winning that 10k bet… I think Vera will win as well… but this will be a much tougher Tim than we’ve see in awhile… Vera will have his work cut out for him and may lose if he over estimates his abilities and under estimates Tim’s.

I believe the winner of this fight will fight the winner of nogueira vs. kongo for the vacated heavyweight title.

If Sylvia tries to keep Vera away only with jabs, he will lose. His front leg will be destroyed by Vera’s leg kicks. As long as Sylvia doesn’t check one of Vera’s kicks really well, hurting Vera, Sylvia will take them all night because he isn’t that quick. I would be willing to bet that the Truth is looking to make Sylvia overly cautious about his lead leg so he can look for an opening up top.

Sylvia will undoubtedly be looking for kicks as well as punches since Vera is so well rounded. You can’t just box the Truth and reasonably expect to win.

Vera’s leg and torso are longer than Sylvia’s arms, so a well spaced leg kick will also protect the head from strikes. A proficient kicker can space very well (just think GSP) because it makes it difficult to step into the pocket and do some real damage. Last night during sparring I only boxed against my muay thai partner. I can barely walk today from several really good, hard kicks.

If Sylvia tries to jab against Vera, Vera will knock his block off.

stagger lee, believe me, it doesnt matter which timmy shows up, he can be the healthiest, and most fit, in his life, people have no idea, how good vera is, when rob kaman, his trainer, the worlds greatest kickboxer of all time, and muay thai legend, is impressed by him,do you know how hard it is to impress that guy, and juanito ibarra, rampages trainer flat out say, he will be champion early next year, that is a big statement, this is what the future of mma is going to be looking like, the only way to describe what fighting vera will be like for timmy, is to imagine he is , fighting a HW version of anderson silva, same quickness, and speed, and standup, and bjj, but world class greco wrestling, and the best kicking game, and knees in the history of mma, this fight is not going past the second round, vera will be HW champion early next year

This is the absolute best thing Tim can do! It doesnt matter if you win or loose, give the crowd a hell of a show, and they will love you and antisipate your fights. Even when Arlovski(the fan favorite that he is) gave a boring fight agaisnt Werdum, the crowd booed his win. No offence to Tim, but he lacks the charisma to not be the wildest, craziest, most expolosive, entertaining fighter out there, this is Tim’s big chance to drop some jaws of his own.

the best kicking game, and knees in the history of mma,

I disagree. First, he has only had 8 pro fights, so he ain’t anything “in the history of mma” except possibly the most overconfident/unproven fighter in the history of mma.

Back in the day, Cro Cop had far more lethal kicks than Vera. Cro Cop is the standard as far as “the best kicks in the history of mma”

Vera does have great knees, but when your talking about the best knees, and in the history of mma. Chute Box is widely know as having the best knees, particularly Wandi. Yeah, Vera has KO’d Fabiano Scherner with a knee, but Wandi has KO’d some of MMA’s best with knees.

what source did you get the juanito, interview, where he makes it very clear, that vera, will be the next HW CHAMPION, that is saying alot, for anyone betting on sykvia to win this fightm this is a HUGE RED FLAG, juanito, has seen him trained, and he is more knowledgeable than, any so called expert, that thinks timmy, has a shot, for anyone that has placed any money, on timmy winning, kiss your money goodbye

I smell a combination of Brandon Vera and Rob Kaman’s nuts in this thread. Don’t ask how I know what that smells like, I just do… Has anyone been hanging from them recently?

LOL
