Tito Ortiz: Will return when fully healthy

Props: The Underground Forum
Quoteworthy:
"Getting in shape. I'm doing rehab for my injuries. I'm sick of fight 75%. I'm trying to pay my bills injured and making guys like evans and forrest look good. I can't do it anymore. I'm going to take some time to take care of myself. Everyone wants the old Tito back and I'm going to give it to them."
-- Tito Ortiz -- who posts under the handle FUTA1 in the UG forum -- explains the reason he is not fighting sooner. "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy" was expected to rematch Rashad Evans at UFC 78: "Validation" on November 17. Instead, Evans will take on Michael Bisping in the main event at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

O ya, i’m sure that’s why he hasn’t looked so good. He wasn’t healthy.

although he may say his conditioning is great, it’s really not. by the end of “round one” he’s already huffin’ and puffin. still, he’s one of my favorites!
great conditioners: frank shamrock, roger huerta, diego sanchez, george st. pierre, kj noons, rich franklin, and forrest griffin.
…..BJ PENN, the NEXT lightweight champion dec.29,2007! BJ Penn all the way, baby!

LOL… ok, so now he’s as good as Forest or Evans at 75%… wasn’t he 100% when Couture GnP him and then gave him a ‘bad boy spanking’? How about when he went after Liddell’s fists in two bouts with his face?… ok, I actually believe he needs to go to rehab for injuries, and yes I would rather see a 100% Tito take a beating from Champions, than a 75% Tito even things up with possible future Champions… Hope Rehab goes well with Tito while these younger guys train, fight and improve, we’ll see when he locks horns with them again.

Way to go Tito!!
You just bought yourself another two years with the 14 year old noobs and the guy that hasn’t watched UFC since you fought Randy.
Your not kidding anyone. You want to promote your clothing brand; You want to get rich; You want to stay at least a little bit famous.
I’m surprised he has ANY real fans left. What a joke. He hasn’t fought at 100% in several years, and it has had NOTHING to do with injuries. It’s had everything to do with just getting by. Promoting yourself just enough to stay in people’s minds. Retire already!

Tito had his day.. not everyone’s gonna age like Couture and that’s what makes Randy so special.. I like to root for the underdog, but hell Tito’s antics sure get annoying.. and hearing him trying to talk shxt with his lil bxtch ass voice is laughable… I remember when he was humble and making a name for himself and everybody loved him because of that… Now he just turned into any other a**hole from ‘Lions Den’… A part of me roots for the Tito of old, but I want the Tito of today to get his ass beat… that being said Tito has accomplished his self-promotion… love him or hate him, this fxcker gots us where he wants us…

I agree with everything in this comment, except the “retire already” part. The only Ortiz fight I’ve ever been bored with was the Ortiz/Evans bout, so I wouldn’t want him gone just yet. Plus he’s a really good litmus test for up and coming LHW fighters. I do get tired of Tito’s games though and wish he would just fight. I think he’d do better. He’s not too old, he’s big and has pretty good conditioning. Stop being an entertainer and just fight, man.

You see whats happened is, with Chuck out the way TITO thinks he has a chance at winning the title back. Unlucky son you will get destroyed by Rampage and Id put my money on Forrest beating you after his performance against Shogun (who I think would also beat you). In fact it will be ironic if Bisping beats Evans, Bisping v Tito gets announced and finally Bisping gets the legitimate fight and I reckon win he would deserve.

Amazingly, I believe that Tito has a pretty good chance at beating Rampage.

Who knows what the future holds for Tito in terms of how far he will make it back to title contention but if he’s serious about giving it another run as the old Tito, he needs to put as much emphasis on expanding his game as possible. He knows he’s one of the best at GnP but these days, you need so much more than that to win, let alone dominate.
All in all, I stand confident behind Tito and that UFC fans will indeed see the Tito of old (in terms of intensity) but he’ll come out with a much more well-rounded arsenal.
As for Tito haters, god I can’t wait for you guys to eat your words. I can respect guys that at least make an argument (i.e. like he’s too one dimensional OR that he’s too greedy) but those that just hate him because other people do and can’t even back it up with an educated argument is just ridiculous.

Damn, this is terrible news. I’m not a big Tito fan but I look forward to him fighting, not because of his antics but just to see how he compares to other fighters in the division. Thats one thing that annoys the hell out of me. All his fights are like 8 months apart, and he fights WAY too many rematches. He was actully at one point scheduled to fight Forrest Griffin again.
by Alfred on Oct 6, 2007 9:00 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I actually am a Tito fan.
That being said, I’d like him to fight someone interesting, a la not Rashad, again.
Speaking of which, that was the worst “rivalry” ever. Did anyone get the feeling that they didn’t actually dislike each other very much at all?
His feuds with Mezger, Shamrock and Liddell seemed so much more legitimate.
Anyhow.
I hope he gets back on track. Rematch with Wanderlei/Griffin? A fight with Shogun? Hendo? Rampage?
The possibilities are endless.

I’m a Griffin fan and i don’t think he’ll appreciate that comment.
Nobody dominated Griffen like Tito did in their first round. That was a 10-8 round if I’ve ever seen one. It was very apparent Tito was injured (look at his taped leg, half @ss take down attempt, etc.) and those injuries affected the second and third rounds.
I’ve never seen anyone handle Rashad either (again, for the first round, albeit, it wasn’t as dominating).
I’m becoming a huge Forrest fan seeing his work ethic, modesty, and ever developing well rounded skills. With that said, that says a lot about Tito’s potential if he can get close to 100%.

I would love to see Tito fighting at 100% again, he absolutely dominated Rashad during the first round, and then his back gave out. . . he said every time he stepped down it was like a knife digging into him. He would have manhandled Evans, 30-27 if he was fully there.
by Jesse G on Oct 6, 2007 11:32 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
jason is right since shamrock who he fought 3 times knowing he would beat that old guy up tito hasn’t ground and pound anyone. lost to lidell twice, took forrest who should have won and rashad to the judges, even little known patrick cote who he should have ass beaten to the boards. lost to randy to the judges again, and victor belfort who was on his last peg. he always says he is hurt, the guy barely fights at all maybe one a year two fights if we get lucky, he only fought once this year. he sat out another whole year between belfort and griffin. i would love to see the tito of old or even knowing that lidell, hendo, shogun, silva, alexander, even jardine would probably beat him, it would be nice to see a surprise from tito and watch him ground and pound one of them out in the first round. i would love to see that, but i really don’t think it will happen.

I think tito still has some stuff left but didnt he say before the fight with rashad that he was 100% for the first time in a while? I like Tito but I think he is scared because of the way the LHW division has been going lately. Alot, if not most fighters, have some injuries coming into fights. Its a fact. Seeing chuck lose to jardine and Alexander killing people, Griffen choking out Shogun. Where does Tito fit into the title picture? He doesn’t and that more than anything is probably why he is taking a break. Plus Wand would murder Tito if they fought again. Im sorry but its true!

Can you think of any that go the other way besides two of the WORLD’S BEST – Randy and Liddell?
We all saw Tito’s first round against Forrest. That’s Tito’s potential. He was handling Rashad for two rounds and went the distance with Couture taking almost no damage – against Couture!
He still holds the record for most title defenses in that weight class.
…and Dude, beating Vitor, Wanderlei, Hughes (in ADCC), Forrest, and Vladmir is no joke.
Take some stats and see if he really talks crap more than the average fighter and take some stats on accomplishments. Compared to most, he’s done more than back his words up.

You know what’s funny. If someone like Chuck or Randy said this exact same thing they would take absolutely no heat for it.
Personally I was really looking forward to seeing Tito fight again, but this will be a good thing. The more Tito’s back heals the better he will fight.
I still think it’s funny that people can’t fathom having great cardio, but then re-injuring a disk in your back and saying that there is no way that it would hurt or take away from Tito’s performance. (See Tito vs. Forrest, Tito vs. Rashad and see BJ Penn vs. Hughes 2)
Please go fight someone and try to slip one of your disks, then try to keep fighting like nothing happened so your opponent doesn’t take advantage of the situation. Then once you know the pain, and only then can you make dumbass comments and I won’t think you’re a retard.
It’s time for Tito to fight like he used too! WAR

Is there even the Old Tito Ortiz?
Tito really has never lost his pop, nor his swagger. Tito has always fought like this. He has never really been known as a finisher, and more of a ground and pound one dimeinsial fighter.
Let me set this straight, I am a huge Tito Ortiz fan, and have been since he defeated the Axe Murderer Wanderlei Silva.
But Tito has had some bad perfomances against Chuck, Forrest and Rashad. But that is because the MMA game has evolved and just like how we saw with Chuck at UFC 76, the game has surpassed the one dimeinsial element Tito Ortiz has. Tito can not stand up, and he can not submit. He is a natural wrestler who’s only real strength is the ground and pound.
Tito struggles horribly against Stand Up Artist with good sprawl tactics.
When you can only ground and pound and wrestle, it sets you back, thats why Tito Ortiz is not ruling this division once again with an Iron fist. He can not finish his opponents because they are way too well rounded.
He wont change his style, so his style will get him by sometimes, but that is why he is not the fighter he is today. Its not all about what style you are, it is what well rounded fighter you are.
Thats why he struggles.

Don’t ever make these stupid ass comments if your facts ain’t straight. SECONDLY, Tito Ortiz is NOT washed-up. He will be back in top shape by the spring of 08. I can’t say I’m a fan of Tito’s but he’s certainly not on my list of my favorite fighters. In the past I’ve seen a bit of a yellow streak in that guy… “not wanting to fight Chuck Liddell or box Dana White”… but that’s a different argument. I do like laughing at Tito, enjoy watching him fight and sometimes want him to win.
You are right on about Tito’s explosiveness in the 1st round and not being able to push that pace like he use to. I don’t know what to attribute that to, age, injuries, workout, diet, weight cutting, mental fatigue, environment(Jenna Jamison).. etc…? it could be one thing or a combination of things and for now he’s pinpointing it on his injuries, which may or may not be the case, we’ll see. It’s a brutal sport and injuries go along with the turf more for some fighters than others.
Whatever the case is, all fighters have ups and downs and for Tito to still be in the legitimate top ranking of fighters for as long as he has is quite an athletic accomplishment.

Lets face it, when it comes down to it I dont think Tito ever really got over being dominated by randy. Ever since then, hes been trying to expand his game. Every first round he comes out explosive( most of the time ) But falls back to the old gnp. And either loses, draws, or gets a decision Because of his name in the sport.
I think he just needs to start believing in himself and he may get the title back sooner or later. He is still very talented and everyone has to give him that. Im not even a tito fan and lately Ive hated tito. Just a thought…

i would just like to say, as it seems no one else has considered it, that if tito really did completely DESTROY forrest in the first round, and just dominate him completely for 5 mins, why is it that forrest got up and out fought him for the next 2 rounds. in my opinion if some one is completed destroyed in the first, they are not physically able to stand up for 2 and 3. yet griffin did, and ran circles around ortiz for the last 10minutes.

To the guy that said Tito could handle Rampage, Have you been watching MMA long? Tito doesn’t fair well against strikers and Page is a striker that can wrestle, just ask Dan Henderson.
To the guy that researched Tito’s last KO’s of an opponent, You had to go back 6 years to find his last KO of an opponent?! And by the way, who hasn’t pummeled Elvis Sinosec?
About the Forrest/Tito fight, yes Tito looked good in round one but don’t forget Forrest bleeds easily. IF Tito truly dominated Forrest he would have finished him and the fact is Tito couldn’t.
About injuries, Couture said it best, “Who doesn’t get injured in training?” Some love to whine about their injuries while others NEVER bring it up and still fight convincingly.

He doesn’t mention what injuries or how long it will take to heal. He seems to talk big for the camera, but backs off once he’s out of the spot light. If he takes this much time off, he better come back big, or it will be his last fight. If he comes back big, maybe people will believe him.

Tito has been whining about injuries for years. Im happy he is taking time off to wipe that excuse off of his list of excuses. If I’m going to have to put up with Tito, I at least want him at the top of his game so he can fight against opponents that we care about. I mean, everyone wants to see Tito/Wandi (after Wandi/Chuck), right? Even Tito/Hendo would sell tickets. What I don’t want to see is Tito Ortiz vs the runner up of TUF 14.

I hate to tell you this but BJ Penn would beat Sherk and I like them both. Sherk is all class, but he can not match BJ on the ground or standing. If you look at Sherk’s losses he lost to Hughes and St. Pierre. Penn beat Hughes one time and lost a close fight to St. Pierre. Trust me, Penn is better right now.
Also, Tito has had back problems for 2 years now that no one knew about because he does not complain. Let him get healthy and then lets see if he will be his old self again. I hope he is and then we will see what he can do.

Maybe the term “destroyed” is just used loosley. Maybe dominated is more appropriate. The positioning, the effective striking, the effective grappling – it was all Tito.
But consider this, just as Tito may not have “destroyed” Forrest (as in a demolition team destroying a building – destroyed in its most literal sense), Griffen didn’t “run circles” around Tito in rounds 2 and 3. That would have just been silly to watch.
I know it has been debated so many times in these types of blogs, but Forrest didn’t really do too much in those later rounds. Yes, he looked a bit more mobile, but most of his punches hit Tito in the arms. Yeah, a few landed but Tito opened him up in the 3rd while standing and scored a take down. It was close but it’s done.

Come one, who doesn’t open his mouth – just watch any pre fight show or read any blog. Look at how many insults and stupid comments are on this page alone.
I’d rank Rampage above Tito but saying Tito doesn’t fair well against strikers is not a great assesment. Tito hasn’t faired well against Chuck and Randy.
Regarding the KOs, that just dumb. Name one person Couture has KO’d. Name one person Hughes, Sherk, BJ, Fedor, Nog, has KO’d in the last 5 years (I know, they have TKOs and submissions but you’re talking about KOs). Tito has an impressive resume regardless who’s on his KO list and a fighter can still be impressive with or without a lot of KOs.
So who has finished Tito in the last 8 years? Only Chuck. Forrest couldn’t do it, Rashad couldn’t, Randy couldn’t, Vitor couldn’t, Matyushenko couldn’t, Wanderlei couldn’t – you went back 8 years, right? Those were just some of the bigger names, many of whom rank in the top 10 in the world – and Tito won most of those matches!
And you’re right, Forrest dominated the first round against Tito… or are you saying round 1 was close? Way to work that one through.
I hear all sorts of fighters talk about injuries. I really don’t get this hatred for Tito considering what he’s done for the sport but hey, we all have a right to an opinion.

Glad he won’t come back til he’s healthy. I’m tired of fighters saying they’re ready to go, then saying they had an injury after they lose. I can’t imagine fighting for a living, but i bet one would constantly have injuries. Just don’t use them as an excuse if you’re defeated. Man up dammit!

Everything that people say about TITO must remember one thing…He is trying so hard to come back on top and still want to be the dominator…and thats why he may get a lot of injuries in fights and trainings but dont forget that his explosivnes in the first rounds and keeping guys down is very hard and costs a lot of energy just because Tito is still trying to end the fight in the 1st rd…imagine Tito enter to “brake stuff” and his best enterings in the ufc history with fire and hunger in his eyes that was something special and what I love about him.his themes should look like that in the future.I think Tito has to focus on his striking and work with someone verygood at it(maybe Wanderlei since he’s in the us)-that will be nice…I always wish the best for Tito and hope to see him at his best or even better-with something new what will shock the world and shake the octagon…Tito Ortiz and Wanderlei Silva are the best I hope to see Wand taking over the UFC…greetings from Poland ale you Tito and wand fans…
