Ultimate Fighter 6: Episode 2 recap and discussion

The ultimate fighter tuf 6 episode 2
By Jesse Holland

Episode two of The Ultimate Fighter 6 is underway and tonight's episode should not be mistaken for a re-run from Season 3 despite so many glaring similarities.

Things get started back at the house where some of the guys keep a running tally of the winners and losers of each fight with a cute little diagram on the wall. Think of the chalkboard from Gone in 60 Seconds and you have the idea.

Not everyone is for it, particularly Dorian who feels it's a little cold-blooded to be crossing fighters off the list like they've been murked and buried in a pit. Either that or Dorian suffers from a case of foreshadowing.

Billy Miles gets a few seconds of camera time and immediately endears himself to thousands of Texans with his hideous straw hat and "Aw shucks" attitude. I suppose a Brad Imes comparison is inevitable but since tonight's theme is Season 3 I'm going to sweep that one under the rug.

Star-divide

Hughes gets all tingly over his team's intensity level during training. One of the contestants even compares the group to the mighty Spartans but based on some of their more unappealing attributes, I can safely say there are a few of them who wouldn't be spared the cliff as infants.

Speaking of infants, Joe Scarola gets a little whiny about his loss and how much he misses home. He also longs for his girlfriend which causes Coach Serra to swoop in and remind him of the scarlet letter they branded TUF 3's Noah with after choosing his girlfriend over life in the UFC.

After hearing Noah had set the all-time record for most disgusted viewers, Joe immediately thinks to himself "Hey, I can break that record".

Surprisingly, most of the other fighters want him to stick it out. Mac in particular finds Joe to be pretty normal and hopes that he stays to balance out some of the idiots in the group. Having worked for Corporate America, I can certainly appreciate the logic.

Joe solemnly asks Serra for one phone call like he's just been indicted on felony charges but thankfully Matt doesn't give in.

Back at the house Team Hughes ponders the next fight pick (which Serra controls) and Dorian is convinced it's him. He spends a lot of time pacing and eventually unravels like he was being picked for Russian Roulette.

Serra does not disappoint and matches him up against Matt "No Regard" Arroyo. Now that ladies and gentleman, is an old-school nickname that gets it done. I officially dropped what I was doing and climbed aboard the Arroyo bandwagon.

Team Hughes has a good laugh because they think they've hit another home run. Then again, Hughes has to reach his cocky laugh quota for each episode in the same way that Dana has to interject an F-bomb into every fighter speech.

Serra bets his life that Arroyo won't quit. Since "No Regard" has just three fights to his name, part of me hopes (for the sake of Mrs. Terror) that Coach Serra has Aflac.

During the break we get a commercial for a fantastic new reality show called Last One Standing. The show revolves around some fighters who get airdropped into a South American jungle to brawl with tribesman after living like an earthworm for several weeks.

I believe one of the contestants muttered something like "There's gonna be a serious fatality". What a great tagline for a sport that begs for legitimacy. Bravo, fellas.

When the show returns we get perhaps the most disturbing segment since a bloated Gabe Ruediger powerwashed his intestines while trying to lose a few pounds.

Hughes gathers the troops and starts handing out bibles like they were high school yearbooks. He then instructs the fighters to read the book of Esther and find a character that most resembles him.

Now I knew Hughes had an ego but to make a group of people that he is supposed to be leading dig through the bible to find a worthy comparison is just downright insane.

He starts badgering the guys to get the answer he's looking for and finally someone tells him he is the Queen (although I had him pegged as Haman). Hughes nods and says he likes to help people just as she did.

He probably could have used that hour to train by just yelling out "I LIKE TO HELP PEOPLE" as they walked into the gym.

He also tells everyone that he could work in a nursing home. If he keeps pulling stunts like this he'll definitely be in a nursing home, but it won't be for the reason he thinks.

Serra calls Hughes a whackjob for the mandatory bible study and I wondered to myself just how many people were starting to wish they had ended up on Team Serra.

We cut back to Joe (Who I should really refer to as Joe-ah for his Noah-esque approach to a career in MMA) and he's back on the "Woe is me" rap. I understand what it means to be homesick but has it even been a week?

With the exception of a Dana sighting, we have a pretty uneventful weigh-in and we cut back to Joe flipping through Polaroids of his girlfriend back in New York. He starts to get paranoid about what she's doing and who she's doing it with.

I think its the first time I ever got nostalgic about a time period that I didn't even live through as I hoped the show would turn black & white and a giant hook would come out and yank Joe off the screen like an old silent film.

Coach Serra is equally aggravated as he's forced to abandon a training session to get Joe (who is back at the house keeping Arroyo company) to stop pestering the producers about making a phone call once a week to his girlfriend.

Serra gets in his face and Joe insists it's the last time we'll hear about him being homesick. I'm immediately reminded of Publishers Clearing House, who also insist it's the last time I'll get a free catalog from them unless I actually order something.

By some miracle we actually get to the fight but between Joe and Jesus I know we've wasted about 55 minutes so there's no question that it's going to be over quick. I can't imagine what's on the cutting room floor if this is what's been making the air.

I will however admit to laughing quite loudly when Team Serra came through the double-doors and into the gym like they were the Jets from West Side Story.

Quote of the night (or perhaps the series) goes to Dorian, who in his pre-fight prediction remarks "I'm puttin' judges out of business".

Round one begins and Matt eats a huge knee charging in. Dorian briefly gets a clinch and tries to do it again. Matt secures a leg and brings Dorian to the canvas. He misses with a huge right but works for position. Matt gets mount and rains down punches. Mazzamoustache warns Dorian that he will stop it and Dorian rolls over. Matt quickly and efficiently sinks in a rear naked choke for the win.

Back in the Hughes locker room Dorian expresses his disappointment. Hughes decides it would be a good time for group prayer. Afterwards Dorian admits to a craving for fat hookers and Latina midgets. I guess if Hughes wanted me to pray after getting choked out on TV I would probably be asking for the something along those lines.

Weak fight, weak episode. Or as Pastor Hughes would say: Psalm you win, Psalm you lose.

Stay tuned next week as Joe requests a day off, Coach Hughes gives himself an expiration date, and the guys get drunk and start sparring with the house.

See you then!

Will somebody, anybody, please shut Serra’s mouth?

You’re talking, why don’t you attempt it?

Just a suggestion.

This season seems crazy already, even though I can not STAND Matt Hughes, he is a heck of a coach.

Mania, I am shooting you personally an e-mail because I just thought of something that could help “enhance” this site.

ahaha that was pretty fucked lol…honestly tho that Sarcolis guy who lost in the first episode just needs to get outa there now he’s bitchin n complaining and it’s soo god damn annoying, im sure if he had won he wouldnt act like this cant wait to see dana punk his asss…

He was very cool about it and told the guys that they didn’t have to read them. On a different note… Yo Serra, (dude alert) you are a stupid booger eating, insecure little girl who cries about Hughs being full of himself when my grandma could tell who the princess really is. Why don’t you grow a pair and stop talking about how stupid Hughs is and worry about being a mentor for your “team” (if you want to call it a team). If you don’t want to be remembered as being the voice that was giving Showney Carter a pop quiz during his shot at stardom (“what did we practice Showney?”) than grow up “dude”. Your guys don’t respect you because you don’t know how to lead them. A leader does what he says he is going to do. If you are going to fire somebody, first of all, don’t make an anouncement and then not do what you said you would do. That is a sign of weakness and these guys are bread to smell that. Step it up and choose your words..oh and the f-bombs have no impact if you use them every other word. You’ve got alot of holes in your game when it comes to coaching “dude”.

How did Hughes present the Bibles and how did it go down? Anybody – thanks!

he brought out a stack of bibles and handed them out.
he told everyone who want’s to,to read a section.
then he said when your done tell me(hughes) who in the chapter(what character) acts most like him(hughes)
it was funny shit, Mac didn’t read, Hughes was pissed but not tryin to show it.
I personally think the Bible thing was a bad move for Hughes.
i dont have anything against GOD
but this is a fight show, a show to train hard, not read Bibles and tell Hughes who in the story his fighters think remind them of him.
most of them didn’t even understand the story. and couldn’t pick who reminded them of Hughes. they were like..?“are we supposed to say he’s like God??”"
anyways it was stupid, and thats probably why his guy lost to Serra’s fighter,(probably confused, or could have used the training rather then reading?)
…oh yeah by the way…Hughes wanted them to think he was like the QUEEN in the story?not god
maybe the queen in the story is a dumbass like hughes

Joey is such a bitch, you know how many guys would love to be on this show, with his attitude he will bring the whole team down, and how many damn times does Serra have to use the word “bro”, bro this, bro that, aight bro, BRO!, SHUT THE FUCK UP

Good show so far.

I don’t really give a crap about dude and his phone. I want to see training techniques and get some bjj tips from Serra.

How about Hughes and his bible study and prayer? A little odd, but religous fighters seem to do well.

by Hoodlum on Sep 27, 2007 8:34 AM EDT reply actions

Meh, what a boring season so far. I don’t see it as too far a stretch with the Bibles. Didn’t Hughes and Franklin show up in Season 2 and everyone had bible study or some shit? Whatever, Serra needs to shut up and Hughes is showing the signs of too many hits to the head. If anything, this is bad publicity for the school he’s opening up in Ill. Like what’s on the agenda? 3 mandatory training sessions a day, prayers before and after meals and bible study everyday? Maybe in the facility they’ll throw in a chapel…

I just wish I could set my digital cable to switch over when the fight comes on. The show is painful, the banter is worse and Joe is truly a Serra student. No heart and never shuts the fuck up. :P

For all Serra’s talk, he still didn’t send him home.

Awesome quote Jesse: “I can safely say there are a few of them who wouldn’t be spared the cliff as infants.”

Seriously I hated how this episode and next week’s preview make it look like Joe is not only the new Noah but also the new Gabe (too much of the episodes focused on him about the same stupid issue, Gabe’s weight / Joe’s gf)

I don’t like Hughes… Yes, he is a good fighter and I think he is a good coach, but, the guy is just too cocky for my taste.

I can’t fucking stand Serra. That guy tops Hughes cockiness and he is a HUGE jackass. Not sure that I’m even going to watch the match at the end of this season.

I WILL watch GSP beat who ever wins between Hughes vs. jackass

I can’t believe people would risk the opportunity of a lifetime, for being homesick and missing his girlfriend. They know what they are giving up for this opportunity. Not only does he embarass himself on the show but he reflects on Matt SErra as a coachl and what he actually is bringing to the table as a coach.

by Da Monkey on Sep 27, 2007 9:08 AM EDT reply actions

Well the Hughes team wouldn’t have any drama without the Bible plot. Of course it would be a little controversial for some people but the only people who criticized him about it was team Serra.

He also instituted prayer on his team. When Serra found out about it he was like: “Whoa I can’t believe it, Matt Hughes is crazy, shoving his religion down everyone’s throat” yada yada.

Joey is mentally weak and has the mentality of a teenage girl. They will leave him as long as they can for added drama (this being a reality show and all).

The movie 300 was based off a story from the bible….

It was based off of the battle of Thermopylae, which was first documented by Herodotus, not the bible.

“Who is Matt Hughes in the book of Ester?, I couldn’t find a farmer in there that goes around body slammin’ dudes” (or something like that) was by far, the funniest one liner yet. The 2 fat ho’s and a latino midget thing runs a close second. I’m an ordained rev. of the Christian faith. I’d NEVER have a team read a book of the Bible. It’s just funny that he picked ESTER! I love Matt Hughes, and I’m glad he shares his faith, were all called to that, but if you’re going to share, share JESUS! Revelation describes Him best as He is now, a victorious, TATOOed (Rev 19:16), unbeatable warrior who has the blood of his enemies all over his gear (Rev 19:13). Sounds like somebody a fight fan might like to know.

I can see the tee shirts now….“Matt Hughes is my queen”.

Despite the increased popularity of the UFC I have to wonder if TUF 6 isn’t going to garner the lowest ratings yet.

I am not at all digging the antics of either coach. Hughes the religous zealot and Serra the mouth. Combine that with 1.2 seconds of a piss poor fight and you’ve got one of the worst episodes yet.

BTW, GTFO Joey – you whiney bee-otch.

I don’t know what you posted that he countered, but if he did I’m fairly certain it was not personal, just a difference of opinion that he supported with facts. If you don’t want people questioning your opinion then start your own blog and call it www.everybodythinkslikeme.com. Otherwise learn a little something from the various opinions expressed on this forum and get over yourself.

This session is turning out to be pretty entertaining, I love all the contention between serra and Hughes, serra’s funny as hell when he’s angry which seems constant. Hughes seems like a impish trouble maker who loves to get under hotheads skin, serra is a fool because hughes is so in his head right now. The whole bible thing was funny too, sometimes I really wonder if dana purposefully gets guys to do whacky things for ratings, you guys have to admit it really adds spice to the show. For me this is one of the best sessions yet mainly because of serra and hughes as coaches. I know its nothing new having coaches who can’t stand each other but I’m much more familiar with these two coaches and enjoy seeing them more than any of the others.

Esther:

Key Truths from Reformation Bible

The people of God will suffer severely at times at the hands of God’s enemies.

God will preserve his people in their times of oppression.

The Lord will reverse the fortunes of those who oppress his people and will exalt his people from their humble state.

The people of God must seek help from God and remain faithful to him despite their trials of suffering.

The people of God should regularly commemorate the wonder’s of God’s deliverances in the past for courage in their present trials.

You should really avoid commenting on things you don’t understand. The Bible presents war and fighting as honorable things – Psalm 144:1 “Praise be to the LORD my Rock, who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle.” 1 Corinthians 9:25-26 “Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air.” I know I’ll probably get some “Oh, great, now we’re quoting scriptures. . .” but whatever, dude, at least do some research before you call somebody a hypocrite.

AND Hughes…he’s full of himself, “Oh everybody, I want you to know how humble I am, I want you to know how I love to help people, that’s why I’m making you do something that has nothing to do with fighting” He is so vain. Barrera is a strange one. I’m very curious to see how he performs in the octagon. He looks physically strong and seems to be driven, but I’m wary of fighters who talk too much with no record to speak of. He’s caught my ear three times in two episodes by some stupid shit that’s he’s said, his bible scene “explanation” being one of them.

When I heard Barrera on the first episode say that Matt Hughes saw God in him, I suspected that might be a harbinger of more dippy remarks to come. It takes a pretty ludicrous man to say something that asinine on television and mean it. Then there was that scene in the van before Mac’s fight, where again Barrera was pontificating in his usual brainless fashion about men being warriors, then feebly attempting to justify it by saying something crazy about not teaching little girls how not to fight (or some equally nonsensical and crazy shit). The look on Mac’s face was priceless. Now we have Barrera trying to elucidate a bible passage like an electrician trying to perform neurosurgey. Nice.

Keep this up Barrera. You’re slowly becoming my favorite character on the show.

LMAO!!!!! I just went to Matt Huges Myspace page to see what people had to say about his whole bible thing last night. I started looking at his pics and came across this one of him and his brother. Since he doesnt have a nickname it should now be…MATT “The Mullet” Hughes!!

I hate to go on a bible rant, and stray from the main topic here, but it really is a bible story. 300 men stood against millions. Forgot what book it’s in, but Im sure you could google it.

As someone pointed out before, the movie 300 is based on the graphic novel of the same title by Frank Miller, which is based on Herodotus’ history of the event. Don’t know about the account in the Bible, I’ve never heard of it, but I’m not a Bible scholar. I do know Xerxes, the bad guy in 300, was the king in the Book of Esther, which is probably why Matt Hughes raised his eyebrows when one guy said he was the king.

I cant believe these guys. I’m a girl and the only reason I watch this show is because of all the drama. It’s hilarious. Joe, “I want to go home….I miss my girl…I wonder what she’s doing” – what a cry baby. AND Hughes…he’s full of himself, “Oh everybody, I want you to know how humble I am, I want you to know how I love to help people, that’s why I’m making you do something that has nothing to do with fighting” He is so vain. Serra…talks way to much instead of just training the guys. I love this. These guys are funny.

..I shall not mis an episode..I wanna go home / let me call my girl “Joe-ah”..and Hughes..UFc’s Queen of the Octagon..bible studies/UFC coach..Hooker’s and latino midgets..with a fight in each show..God damn.. This is the super dude soap opera.

No, it really isn’t. The movie 300 is based off of a comic book by Frank Miller which is itself an adaptation of the Battle of Thermopylae as related by Herodotus. It has nothing to do with the Bible.

Is it me or does it seem like the fights on this show are such slow mo with everything from the punches to just straight grappling? The punches Matt was throwing just looked so weird to me….Idk though? (sorry for getting off the bible topic).

Joe makes me sick! He is a big Mandilon and should be focusing on the break of his life, getting into the show. Dissapoints me to see him waste his opportunity or future with the show if he leaves for a Hayna. Haaaa.

Did anyone else dream of fat hookers and latino midgets last night like Dorian? I know I did!

LMAO. This thread delivers! Ament to that (just to keep the religious references going) Almost as entertaining as last night’s episode.

Does anyone know which episode the fighters go mental in (throw foosball table in the pool) and start fighting in the house? They showed it in the TUF 6 previews (I’m not talking about the preview for next week).

Unlike a lot of people on this forum, and you come to mind pretty quickly, ViolentMike almost always contributes posts that are relevant, intelligent and properly spelled and punctuated.

The account you are thinking of is Gideon in Judges 6, it is a similar storyline but not what the movie 300 is based off of. Gideon defeated 135,000 Midianites with 300 men.

On 300—

300 was a graphic novel by Frank Miller that illustrated the battle of Therm (spelling). The Bible does mention Xerxes in the books of Esther and Ezra. The beginning of Esther reveals that Xerxes was making plans to take over Greece, thus resulting in the meeting with the Spartans.

About the Bible issue, I have no prob with what Hughes was doing. It was a voluntary thing and I think it was a way to get ready mentally. Teams have done that with other books. I dont like the cockiness that Hughes has, but I dont see nothing wrong with it,.

I understand that the bible study was optional, but I think Matt Hughes went over the line when he wouldn’t stop pestering Mac for not participating in the study. The guy wanted to train instaid of read scripture that’s his decision Hughes didn’t need to bug him about it. In addition to Hughes’ lack of understanding he also has the biggest ego ever the guy makes people read the bible for an hour just so they can tell him he likes to help people, give me a break. Matt Serra is no prize either. He thinks that everybody is out to get him and he responds by being loud and obnoctious. I wouldn’t like to be around either of these guys but if I had to it would be Serra

I’m gonna start by saying that I"m not religious and actually think that religion is pretty rediculous….However, during the last year we have seen many fights where either 1 or both don’t look mentally there….So in this respect, religion can help to motivate someone to the point where they feel like “GOD” is on their side and in a way helping them to fight….In sortof a weird way, I can see that this aspect of the game has been overlooked

To be a champion or even win fights, you need to feel like you’re the better fighter…Religion might give some people that feeling of invincibility.

I don’t know, any thoughts?

Big whoop that Matt Hughes is a cocky guy. You know, if any MMA artists on this forum had a lifetime record of 43-5 in professional MMA fights, I’m sure you’d be a bit cocky too.

Hughes is the most dominant Welterweight of all time. No fighter will ever be in their prime forever. So all the GSP nut riders that love GSP now, let’s see if Rush can come close to being 43-5 by the end of his career. I’d put money that he wouldn’t even come close.

With the so-called “favored” fighters losing left and right, I highly doubt anyone will have a record as accomplished as Hughes.

And quite personally, I think Matt Hughes is an arrogant bastard. But, there isn’t anyone who fights in the UFC that doesn’t respect his game. At 43-5, he’s earned the right to be arrogant and train his team the way he sees fit.

Matt Hughes. How dare he force himself on his fighters like that. I mean just because Matt Hughes knows how to read he shouldn’t assume that his fighter’s do. That was selfish, I could hear the helplessness in the voice of the fighter who wished they would make the Bible into a movie. LOL

Luke,

Christianity is not a mental exercise nor is about feeling.

Most of us would like to be understood – we write, we humor, and we engage in many forms of communication. Christianity is more about coming along side of that individual in friendship or relationship as to help support an individual with their pursuits and/or the development of their own personal gifts. A life in Christ is unique in the sense that it is not a formula – it is a realization that this world is more complex than we could ever figure and we have been granted this gift called life.

A relationship with Christ does not guarantee victory in a MMA competition. A relationship in Christ begins a journey in which we begin to see things outside the arena and outside the boundaries of school, television and local culture. It is a relationship of Love that allows our lives to have greater meaning. The UFC is just one point in time and one of many gifts from God.

Luke, I am not religious, I am a child of God. I am not perfect nor do I claim to have this correct. I live by a spirit that is within me and try to fight the spirits that drive me from the life He has gifted me to live.

Hope this helps.

Blessings,
Mark – Sinner – AKA Taped Up Pair

Yes he did. I’m surprised that it hasn’t been discussed at all. We know his first of those fights is against Serra. If he wins the belt, he’ll then fight GSP in thier rubber match. If somehow Hughes wins, he should fight BJ in a rubber match. Who better for Matt to fight in the final fight of his career?

If Hughes loses to Serra, or wins and then loses to GSP, AND Franklin is not champ, look for Hughes to move up to MW to fight Anderson Silva. He would then finish out his career at MW. Hughes has always been a big WW. Not tall, but muscular. It’s surprising that at his age he is still cutting that weight. I wonder what weight he walks around at?

by ViolentMike on Sep 28, 2007 11:43 AM EDT reply actions

Matt Hughes is a complete clown. Serra is a real man. He doesn’t hide behind his snide little comments and actually has the balls to say it to Hughes’ face. Hughes is a tool, as are you for for saying that all Serra does is bitch… Wtf is giving your team a bile gonna do?? great idea, give up practice time to serenade eachother with bible stories.

I think Serra and maybe Hughes are smarter then we think.

Let us realize that the Hughes Serra fight will probably have a good size ppv audience. However, it will probably be even bigger if there is real animosity between the two fighters. (Think Ortiz Shamrock) Now, since the top fighters (I assume) get a percentage of the ppv sales and those sales can be increased by telling the world how much of a jerk your opponent is, this is a pretty clear case.

I’m not doubting the fact that Serra dislikes Hughes and vice versa, just questioning the intensity with which it is done.

The more I see Matt Hughes on television, the more I grow to dislike him. Matt Serra can be a loudmouth, it’s true, but Hughes’ passive-aggressive style of smug overconfidence just disgusts me. It’s almost as if he’s trying to be humble but failing miserably.

The incident with the Bibles in this week’s episode is a perfect example. He uses he story to try to demonstrate to everyone how helpful and humble he is, because he wants the fighters to compare him to the queen—and yet, for some reason, people compare him to God, to Xerxes. Hughes should get it through his head that he is not coming off as humble or Christ-like. A humble person does not BRAG about how humble they are, as Hughes does when he proclaims that he is the queen of the story. And all this in spite of the fact that even his own team pegs him as the two most overconfident, self-centered, and selfish characters of the Bible. (And let’s face it, Matt Hughes IS most comparable with God—because God too likes to help people, but he demands recognition and worship for it like a pompous little twit.)

Also, the fact that Hughes tries to imply that participation is voluntary, and then tracks down Mac and tries to get him to join in even when he is obviously not interested, just goes to show how “humble” he really is. He’s a smug, self-centered D-bag, in my book. And I really hope he and his team lose, even though he will probably just be able to take solace in the book of Job since the moral of Esther didn’t work out so well.

I also found it funny that Serra objected to Hughes’ Bible-study because some of the men might be Jewish. Apparently he isn’t aware that the book of Esther is in the Old Testament, part of the Jewish canon, as well. I am happy that the lone atheist, though, did not have the misfortune of being on Hughes’ team. Imagine if he felt as if he had to pray with the rest of the team. That can be an intensely uncomfortable situation. And I think it is arrogant on Matt’s part to just assume that everyone will fall in line with it. He was wrong with Mac. And he could have been a lot more wrong if he had the atheist on his team.

I want to see Matt train with Muslims. And then I want the Muslims to try to coerce him into reading the Koran. And then I want them to try to peer-pressure him into praying towards Mecca. Perhaps then he would understand why his preaching has no place on the show, and how uncomfortable it can be to be an outsider, and to feel estranged because of someone pushing their faith.

And if Serra can’t beat Hughes down, at least I know GSP will.
