UFC Quick Quote: Dan Henderson likes light heavyweight

"[Dan] Henderson ... indicated he could be ready for a return to the Octagon by November. Though UFC officials are said to be encouraging the former Olympian to move down to the promotion's 185-pound division, Henderson indicated he would like to remain at light heavyweight."
-- FightNetwork.com reports that PRIDE FC Welterweight Champion (183 pounds) Dan Henderson -- who only has one fight left on his contract -- prefers to stay at light heavyweight now that he is a UFC fighter. "Dangerous" Dan returned to the Octagon earlier this month, losing the 205-pound Pride-UFC "unification" bout to Rampage Jackson via unanimous decision at UFC 75: "Champion vs. Champion." He would be a fine addition to perhaps the thinnest division in the stacked organization.

November card needs main event, how about Henderson against Liddell.

why would’nt he, he can beat 99% of the fighters in the division. he matches up bad with no one

Id like too see Henderson vs Shogun , both coming off 1 loss .. And Silva vs Liddell , both coming off 2 losses. And maybe Griffin vs Machida too see who fights Rampage in early 08 for the belt.

Henderson vs any top LHW – Jardine, Forrest, Rua, Houston, Machida.

WOW.. im suprised with the stay at 205??
Dont get me wrong Hendo is a good LHW but he is a GREAT 185er, and would be a definate threat in the division.
I dont think he can hang with the big boy’s all the time.
And i think he could hang all night with the Middle weights.
…plus…. I wan’t to see a Unification match between ANDERSON SYLVA, and DAN HENDERSON, oh well i hope they line up a good fight for his next LHW bout,… maybe BISPING or HOUSTON or JARDINE or SHO or…..who am i kidding any fight with a top 10 LHW would be great!!
I give him 3 fights before he drops down to 185, some bigger opponant will send him the message.
anyways good luck HENDO,you will probably need it.
hope you can still put on that UNIFICATION bout with ANDERSON!!.thats what i want to see!!!1
by HeadKnock on Sep 26, 2007 9:53 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
by the way… i don’t think BISPING is top 10, it might seem that i think that cause of the way i wrote that last post..
but i do think it would be an entertaining fight.

Alot of fighters as they get older, really dont like to cut weight. Take Randy… walks around at 225, same weight he did when he was LHW Champ. It just takes too much out of your body.
@ 205, Dan will get to fight some of the best fighters in the world, and beat a LOT of them. But @ 185, he will absolutely dominate everyone outside of potentially Franklin and Silva (not saying either are better, and I would put $$ on Hendo, but not nessicarily ‘dominate.’)
I think you’re gonna end up seeing Henderson stick around and make an impact in the UFC. Prolly fight 2-3 times a year, spend more time with his family, and rock socks domestically.

He is for sure a booster for which ever divsion..but the 185’rs do need some needed quality talent.

I wish he would take a fight at 185, then become the #1 contender. I just don’t think it is possible from a business or marketing perspective for the UFC. Kind of hard to promote a main event or a fight for “UNIFYING” the middleweight belts when they just did it and he lost. Doesn’t add up really. Wonder, what they did with the Pride belt.

Two things.. This is really disapointing, I though tthe UFC may have recruited that one man that can take “DA SPI-DUH” lol GO RICH!
Secondly, if Dan W makes griffan fight more fight before a title I will be so pissed off.. He deserves it. he CHIOKED RUA!!! Give him a title shot period.

i think most the top10 would beat him.
not saying Hendo cant beat them cause anything can happen in this sport, i just think hendo would better fit the 185 class.
if he can beat Anderson, he will dominate the division..
Hendo is a good LHW, but he is a GREAT MW!!

Chuck vs Shogun can also be in the mix.

Dan, please drop down to MW. That is where you are needed. I want to see you own a belt in the UFC because you deserve to.
Luppers hit the nail on the head when he said “Alot of fighters as they get older, really dont like to cut weight.” It’s really too bad because Henderson is the only one that I can see beating Anderson Silva. No one in that division can take a punch like Dan Henderson. Therefore, he would not get KO’d by the first punch/kick thrown at him by Silva. Instead, he would be able to get on the inside and dirty box him. As long as he can stay away from the knees in the clinch, I see Hendo winning against Anderson. On the otherhand, I see Rampage being champ at 205 for some time.
Being at a size disadvantage is nothing new for Dan, plus it’s not like he’ll be fighting HW’s again.

So in other words, you would prefer that the LHW belt isn’t defended for another year? Wandi is fighting in December. Then your Forrest/Machida fight wouldn’t happen until January, at least. Then you have to have those 2 winners fight each other, 3 months later being the earliest which would be April. That fight would declare a #1 contender to fight Rampage at least 3 months later. That means the LHW belt wouldn’t be defended until July/August ‘08. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to wait that long to see Rampage whoop some ass.

Machida is no where near the level to be fighting Jackson yet. Yes he is winning, but the simple fact is he can not finish B level fighters, do you really think he has the aggression or drive to be in their with Rampage. Machida will get owned. He needs a lot more seasoning. Him getting a title show would be like Bisping getting a title shot and at least with the exception of hammil he has a reputation for finishing. The only people I can see getting title fights would be Jardine, Houston(Depending on his next fight), Forrest(even though I think he would get owned), and Wandy depending how his debut is.

Hopefully Henderson will step in and fight in the main event at UFC 78 in NOvember. If Henderson is gonna stay at LHW, a main event against say Houston Alexander or Ricardo Arona would help that week ass card in November a lot.
Personally, I hope that after his next fight, the UFC head honchos can persuade him to fight at 185. If the money is right, Im sure Hendo wont have a problem fighting in that division.
Also, a main event fight between Shogun, or Liddell for the November pay per view would be awesome, but I don’t know if Shogun or liddell will be ready to fight so soon.

I know having chuck and tito at the top is not accurate as of this year but considering past ufc merrits they rank up there 14 wins is 14 wins.
I guess in a way maybe it’s overall standings?
as for who should get the next title shot
it’s definetly up in the air with so many of the top guys beating and being beaten by each other.
I update this list for all divisions monthly because I consider the last 12 months.
This particular division is the only one where two once top fighters are on the down are placed near the top
take out chuck and tito and how my list look.

I think Henderson is going to be a force at LHW or any div he decides to fight at.
And him staying in LHW helps the UFC put things in order. . .
How long before Jardine is ready to go again atleast two Months?
Wandi vs (November) Houston, Machida,
Hendo vs (November) Houston, Machida.
or Hendo vs (December) Jardine.
Forrest vs (January) Rampage. (Give us the title fight!)
Lidell vs Rua (January).
Winners of Nov and Dec could fight in Febuary or March.
This just keeps things moving along and Hendo adds to Mix.
If Tito or Rashad look impressive (hard to believe) they can get in there too. The UFC needs give up on Bisping – Hamill rematch, or atleast not wait for it. Take the healthy fighter and throw him against winner of Tito – Rashad or even Babalu would be a good match for them.
Just keeps things happening!!
I like Hendo being in the Mix.
I think Hendo stays top 3 in LHW for some time, He is a hard guy to beat!!!

My opinion on title shots in this order just off the top of my head:
In my humble OPINION these are the guys up for a title (as of this moment).
1. Wandy – def. Rampage, Hendo
2. Forrest – def. Shogun
3. Jardine – def. Liddell, Forrest
4. Henderson – def. Wandy
5. Shogun – def. Rampage
6. Machida – def. Nakamura
7. Houston – def. Jardine
8. Liddell – def. Tito
Forrest vs. Wanderlei in Dec for the title in maybe March (UFC may want to push for this one —either way they win because if Wandy wins we all know that the new and improved Page wants some pay back.. if Forrest wins, he still draws the crowd; right now i would give a bigger merit to the submission Forrest did on Shogun vs. the split decision win that Jardine got against Chuck who had 1 recent loss prior to that fight —i reckon this nullifies Forrest’s original loss to Jardine in a sense considering the constraints ..so based on that i’m putting him w/ Wanderlei for #1 contender spot). If he beats 2 ChuteBoxe guys in a row. He deserves a title shot!
Jardine vs. Henderson – Jardine beat a top name w/ 1 recent loss; time to beat another top name w/ also 1 recent loss & to somewhat make up for getting KTFO by Houston & proving his Win against Chuck was no fluke; Hendo needs a W.
Shogun vs. Machida – Machida needs to beat a top name —start w/ a top name that just lost; Shogun needs a W.
Houston vs. Liddell – Chuck’s been KO’d and lost a fight he was ‘supposed’ to Win = 2 L’s. he gets the dark horse in Houston who’s been lighting people up. I see Chuck needing 3 or more so big win KOs to get back in title contention.
Tito vs. Rashad – sorry, but this just bores me.
if Forrest isn’t fit to fight Wandy…i’m putting..hmmm. this is where everything turns pretty ugly.

1. Wandy – def. Rampage, Hendo (Above Forrest because of his overall record & record against Rampage)
2. Forrest – def. Shogun (Above Jardine coz of the submission on Shogun —i think weighs more than the Liddel split decision W of Jardine’s despite losing to Keith before)
3. Jardine – def. Liddell, Forrest (Above Dan coz he has a recent W against Liddell)
4. Henderson – def. Wandy (Dan above Shogun coz he wasn’t choked out; solid performance against Rampage)
5. Shogun – def. Rampage (Record)
6. Machida – def. Nakamura (Record)
7. Houston – def. Jardine (Above Chuck b/c of 2 explosive W’s)
8. Liddell – def. Tito (Above Tito/Rashad coz they bore me)

Wandi still needs an opponent!
Arona is comming to the UFC when?

Babalu might be ready for a fight come November!

I think this would actually be a good fight. Henderson is a grappler, the type of fighter that Chuck excels against. But he also has stand-up skills, which in addition to his hard head, would make it difficult for Chuck. I think Dan would win, but it would be an entertaining fight.
I do think that November is too soon for Chuck to be fighting someone of Dan’s caliber. He needs time off to re-evaluate his career, and then come back and fight a grappler (like Rashad Evans).

The two MAJOR flaws I see in your rankings system are:
1) You must consider the fighters opponents. The way its set up, a win over Dan Henderson is just as important as a win against me.
2) It’s all about ‘what have you done for me lately’. The fact that Tito Ortiz was dominating the division 5 years ago, has nothing to do with who deserves a title shot today. Judging a fighter on his last year’s performance is a big improvement. But you must consider the opponent!

More like he doesn’t like the idea of fighting Anderson Silva.

People who want to put a fighter who won a fight vs one that lost a fight are nuts. You’re dreaming. Or 2 fighters who lost a fight but one was manhandled and the other took it to his opponent. Match up fighters who would actually have a close fight. Henderson Vs Shogun? You want Shogun in a coma? Shogun Vs Liddell they both looked inept in their last fight, so they got to prove.

arona vs. liddel, then he reaallly will see that he was the most overrated champ in ufc history!

i understand he probably doesn’t want to worry about cutting the weight, thats probably why he wants to stay at 205, plus he’s good enough to compete there so why not…but at the same time i still want to see him fight anderson silva for the 185 belts, and i think the mw division could use a little more talent, theres a couple 205ers i’d like to see make the move, guys like bisping and rashad evans would be great mw fighters and they’re both young so the weight cutting should come a little bit easier for them…

Hendo would smash Anderosn and anybody at 185. At LHW, I see him alwasy being a top contendar, but never champ again. I think Hendo would beat Shogun after that last performance, also Liddell, if Wandi comes back 100%, then not Wandi, and not Rampage either. And Houstan my prove to become a legit threat to the title and everybody going for it as well. Hendo should do MW, he could me the most dominante champ ever.

Oh and Machida is VERY underrated. The guy dosnt finish many fights, and may not be very exciting, but that should not discredit his skill at all, he is very techniqual, and picks his shots very wisely, someitmes too wisely, hence the lack of excitment. BUt the guy is VERY good. We will probably never get to see this though, he will never fight a legit contendar if I know anyting about Dana, he just isnt marketable enough.

How can you seriously KNOW if a fight is going to be ‘close’?
I think its impossible to gauge if a fight is going to be close or not.
Liddell vs Rampage II should have been in theory longer/better than Liddell vs. Rampage I. but Chuck gets KO’d. Shogun was ‘supposed’ to finish Griffin in the 1st round. Jardine wasn’t supposed to be lit up by a nobody. etc.
So saying “match up people who will have a close fight” is just not possible in my opinion… since you used the assumptive word ‘will’.
I think u can only assess a fighters recent performance maybe 3-5 fights back and factor in the people who they’ve beaten and the way they’ve beaten them in the title shot race.

Look at any other posts I have made comments on and you will know that I don’t think a drop in wieght is the answer usually. With Dan Henderson I make the exception to the rule. Hendo is deserving of a title, is needed in MW div to help stack it with talent, and would definately make a huge affect there with a possible unification fight again. C’mon Hendo drop the wieght.

btw, just out of curiosity…who would you consider the top 10 in line for a title shot at this point in time and why?

HEY GUYS 1ST TIME IN HERE.FIRST THING ILL SAY IS IM FROM THE UK AND AS MUCH AS I LIKE BISPING HAMIL WAS ROBBED.SECOND THING IS I BET DANA IS ABSOLUTELY GUTTED ABOUT THE LAST 2 LHW RESULTS.IF CHUCK AND SHOGUN HADVE WON IT WOULDVE BEEN SHOGUN/RAMPAGE LIDDELL/SILVA.I DONT THINK U CAN THROW JARDINE/GRIFFIN IN WITH PAGE STRAIGHT AWAY THEYRE 2 GREEN.WHAT UVE GOT 2 REALISE IS WHEN PAGE LOST HIS FIGHTS 2 SHOGUN/SILVA HE DIDNT EVEN HAVE A PROPER CAMP HE WAS TRAINIBG WITH AMATEURS AND IN 1 FIGHT WAS EVEN FASTING.NO1 BEATS RAMPAGE 2DAY.I THINK AN EXCITING FIGHT WOULD B SILVA/ALEXANDER 2 COME FORWARD FIGHTERS.THE WINNER GETS RAMPAGE AND GIVE PAGE A TUNE UP FIGHT MAYBE CO MAINEVENTING. ANY THOUGHTS WHO THAT COULD B?
by SCOTT on Sep 27, 2007 7:46 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
AND GIVE PAGE A TUNE UP FIGHT
That does not make sense. A Champ will NEVER have a ‘tune up fight’. The champion only fights the #1 contender. And also, why would Page need a tune up fight? I’ll assume that you’re referring to the fact that he lost to Silva twice, but this is not the same Rampage as back then, and also the fight will take place in a cage, not a ring, and also, the fight is not in Japan, so there will be drug testing. Or were you saying that Page needs a tune up before fighting Houston? If you say No to that question, then your statement makes zero sense:
“We’ll have a #1 contender match as a main event. The champion will also defend the belt, but that won’t be the main event. The reason behind this is because the champ needs a tune up fight, just in case fighter A beats fighter B in the main event #1 contender fight”
Is that really what you were tyring to say?

sorry m8 not used 2 ur grammar.i meant silva/alexander r 2 come forward fighters and it would b exciting and i meant the lhw division is messed up at the moment and it is gonna take a while 2 sort out.rampage is gonna become inactive.he cant wait around so who do u think deserves to be in there with him.
by SCOTT on Sep 28, 2007 9:52 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
all im saying is no one deserves 2 b in the cage with jackson at the moment.dana must b gutted shogun/liddell lost because the next fights were silva/liddell shogun/rampage.u can market griffin better than jardine but jardine won.u cant give jardine a title shot because he got mullered.u cant give alexander a title shot with only 2 ufc fights.the only fight is silva/jackson but i think you need 2 build a fighter up 1st.put alexander in with silva december.have jardine/griffin 2.winners fight each other .winner fights jackson simple.have liddell/shogun it will still sell tickets.but what does jackson do in the meantime thats all im saying
