UFC 78: Karo Parisyan vs. Hector Lombard

Top welterweight contender Karo Parisyan (17-4) will fight UFC newcomer Hector Lombard (11-2-1) at UFC 78 on November 17 in Newark, New Jersey.
Rumors have swirled for sometime now that the two accomplished Judo-based fighters would clash; however, FightNetwork.com appears to be the first reliable source to confirm the 170-pound tilt.
Parisyan is on a two-fight win streak and has been victorious in seven out of his last eight bouts dating all the way back to 2004. "The Heat" most recently defeated Josh Burkman via unanimous decision at UFC 71 in May.
The Armenian-born Judo specialist has been clamoring for a title shot since he missed his chance against Matt Hughes in 2005 because of an injury sustained during training. However, Matt Hughes and Georges St. Pierre are already lined up in front of Parisyan, meaning he won't get his crack at 170-pound glory until mid 2008 at the earliest.
Lombard will make his Octagon debut, hoping that his vast experience fighting overseas can be enough to topple a veteran who will be making his tenth appearance within the eight-sided cage.
The Cuban has appeared twice under the PRIDE FC banner (his only losses) in Japan, as well as with the DEEP organization also in "The Land of the Rising Sun." Lombard -- a Judo specialist and Olympian -- has been successfull of late throughout Australia where he now lives and competes.

(Note: It appears the the rumored bout between Parisyan and Hayato "Mach" Sakurai did not work out.)

Can someone please KO Karo? I’m sick of his attitude and his ego. He isn’t even that impressive. He wants a title shot but doesn’t finish fights before the final bell. Decision victories can only take you so far. Of his last 12 fights only 2 were kept out of the judges hands. I can’t stand this guy. Please, someone knock this cry-baby out.

Hector Lombard? Give me a break. This card really is turning into a joke. Karo is always involved in exciting matches, and is a serious veteran of the octagon. He’s been in the UFC since he was like 18. He earned himself a title shot two years ago. He won 7 of 8 fights, and he get rewarded by fighting Hector Lombard???
They just announced Joe Lauzon’s oppononent for 78 as well. He’ll be fighting Wayne Weems.
The UFC really hates the east coast. Last time they were here, the main event was Arlovski vs Buentello and co-headlined by Elvis Sinosic vs Forrest. I’m not kidding either. I was there, unfortunately. LOL The best thing that I witnessed live at that event was Allesio Sakara’s debut. He got kicked in the dick so hard they had to stop the fight and carry him and his mangled package out of the octagon!

Damn man, I live in Philly now and I was 100 percent going to go to Jersey for this fight but now this card sucks! Tito-Rashad as the main event, come on man. Karo vs. some guy who has two losses in pride (we all know how good those guys have been doing). This card is the worst card since Franklin vs. Okami.

Violent Mike you know I always hold your opinions high but you’ll never see me comment on how Karo “candy ass crybaby / Do you know what I can do to these punks ?” Parysian deserves anything.
The guy is a low life who is not marketable in any sense of the word. He has no real storyline going for him other than Im a “warrior” who has fought since I was 4. OK big deal !!!
The guy doesn’t even look like an athlete much less a world class fighter. He clings on to the fact that he was scheduled to fight Matt Hughes in 2005 for the belt … NO ONE CARES KARO.
He is just miserable and cannot get over the fact that he is a B level fighter who had to go to the judges to get a win over Burkman another B level fighter.
If anyone disagrees please voice your concerns.
As it IS :
Champion : Matt “kiss that belt goodbye” Serra
1. Matt Hughes (obviously because he actually is fighting Serra)
2. George St. Pierre
3. Jon Fitch
As “stacked” as this division once seemed the talent falls off after this. Nonetheless :
4. Toss up Koscheck / Sanchez (providing he stays at 170)

Something drastic has to be done to this card. At this point, I’m actually hoping that they cancel the show along with all the fights on the card. Or just show it for free as a fight night. This past Fight Night was WAY better of a card than this PPV. Yeah, I know there’s still time for fights to be added, but that doesn’t give the fighters the proper time to train. 8 weeks is typical training time. This PPV is now at that point.

I have seen Hector in videos before and this guy is goooood. THIS guy is no joke….same level in Judo as Karo and by far a way better striker. Karo doesnt have enough stamina amd is way to cocky and arrogant…im not saying his bad he is bad fighter because he is not, but i dont like his attitude about the fights and he mocks everybody….but he is good
Although Hector Lombart is not recognized, he is going to destroy Karo!!!!

Like him or not, Karo is the real deal. I dont care about the fact that he hasnt finished a fight in a while because he’s clearly won them all & his fights are usually exciting. I’m by no means a fan of his but I appreciate what he brings into the cage.
As far as this fight is concerned, is there nobody else at 170? What sense does it make for a fighter on Karo’s level to fight a newcomer? This TuF season is really screwing things up at 170lbs.

why would they waste a headline fighter like karo against Hector Lombard? Who the hell wants to see Lombard fight? he didn’t even win his last match in a minor organization and had to go to decision with george stephanopoulos. that guy doesn’t look tough at all. hector hasn’t beaten a name in his whole career. with the talent pool available to the ufc now in the welterweights, they should put kara with a name.

Ouch. This was the best they could do for Karo Parisyan? Say what you want about the guy’s attitude, but he’s a quality fighter who has an exciting style and always brings it- much like Nick Diaz. This was one of their last chances to salvage the card by bringing in a quality opponent to set up a contender match in the welterweight division.
Unless they add a big fight out the blue this is looking like the weakest ppv card in quite some time. UFN is right.

Ok so if Hector Lombard beats Karo, where is this going to put Karo? I dont really know who Lombard is. How about Mike Swick and Karo Parysian? Joe Silva is starting to suck at putting fights together. Needs to keep guys that are closer in rank fighting each other, cause if you dont the rankings get screwed up just like the LHW is now.

I agree with your 1-5 rankings. I can see Hughes moving a couple notches down by either being upset by Serra or handled by GSP (again).
Karo does hold onto his “almost” title shot in ‘05. Unfortunately for him, his losses to GSP and Sanchez make everyone realize he doesn’t belong on the 1-5 list and pretty much puts him out of title contention for the time being.
I do have to mention that Karo is extremely talented and an exciting fighter – even if he is arrogant. He can always improve and mature and definitely has the potential to get back into contention.
I also have to mention that it was very unclassy for him to bring up his very close split decision victory (“See what happens when you fight Karo Parisyan? Ask your brother!”) over Nick Diaz to his family (Nate) on the TUF show. That was just dispicable.

I wanna know what the damn hold up is on sakurai’s return.
This card is terrible, the only fight I wanna c as of now is the spencer fisher fight.
If Sakurai isnt available to fight Karo, I would rather see Karo fight Ryo Chonan instead of Hecctor. Sean sherk not only sabotaged the LHW division but he ruined UFC 78 in Jersey. I’m so sick of sherk and his 1 title defense per year crap!
They shoulda stripped him of the title months ago!!!!!!

Thats the one thing I can’t stand about MMA. Is how they setup newcomers to face veteran fighters who are on 2-3 fight winning streak.
Veteran and proven fighters should not be wasting time with UFC newcomers. Only other fighters making their debut or with 1 win or coming off of loss should fight newcomers.

I agree. It’s not like they’re brothers and they promised their mother they would never fight each other (like the Klitschko’s of boxing). Do your job. Quinton and Dan Henderson had to fight each other and they’re great friends too.

Look guys the karo you see now is not the same one that fought diego, He is getting better all the time. I think they should have fired him in against KOSCHECK. Then you know where he is. I actually think the Diego and Parisyan fight was alot closer than everyone is willing to admit. Thats why it got fight of the year.

Yeah this is not a fight for Karo. Remember all the talk about earning his title shot after the Burkman fight? The UFC is just stalling. Beating this guy does nothing for Karo’s chances and if he gets caught and loses- don’t even think about that.
GSP gets Matt-Matt winner. Then after GSP beats Hughes, hopefully it will be GSP-Fitch for the next title bout with Hughes-Karo in the undercard.

GSP AND HUGHES SHOULD HAVE TO FIGHT AGAIN BEFORE TITLE SHOT
GSP is my favourite fighter in the UFC but personally I feel if you lose a belt you should always have to have two wins before you go back to re-claim the title. GSP has only 1 win and now he will get a title shot, the same with Hughes, he faced a TUF LOSER and won by DECISION and became No.1 contender, thats not fair.
When Chuck lost, the most dominant champion in recent UFC history (except maybe Hughes) it was immediately decided he would need two wins before he gets a shot. That should be the same for any division, look at Franklin he had to do the exact samething.

I am a big fan of Karo even though at times he thinks the sun shines out of his backside. The guy has some of the most exciting and fast paced fights in the octogan. He is excellent on his feet and extremely technical on the ground. And as I have said before, as long as they are not boring fights (Sherk), it does not bother me that they go the distance at all. As far as knocking him out is concerned, the guy has one of the hardest chins in the division, so that will definately be difficult.

I agree with some, but not all.
In a different thread yesterday I said that Karo has a hard time finishing his fights. However, in many of his fights that go to deecision, he wins convingly. Its not uncommon for Karo to win unanimous decisions 30-27, 30-26, 30-27. I agree that he should be finishing off more opponents. In my opinion, all he really needs to do in order to do so, is master the basic move of the rare naked choke. Karo isn’t on his back too often, so a triangle choke would be super beneficial for him. However, with Karo’s strength, kimura’s and arm bars would be good for him as well. Obviously he has no problems getting his opponents to the ground by using his Judo throws.
Actually, I do not understand this. Karo was the #1 contender to fight Hughes two years ago, but got injured and had to pull out of the match. Joe Riggs took his place. This is the same thing that happened to GSP when he was supposed to have his rematch with Hughes. GSP beat Penn to be #1 contender, but got injured during training, and Penn fought and lost for the belt. As soon as GSP was healthy, he got his title shot against Hughes. Why did the UFC not give Karo, who got injured training to fight for the belt, a fight against the champ, but on the other hand GSP was #1 contender, got hurt, pulled out of the fight, and then got the fight against Hughes for the belt once he was healthy. To me, that is not fair to Karo.
But kevin, don’t get me wrong, I am no fan of Karo, I actually hate him as a person from what I can tell. But, whenenever Karo fights, you know that you are going to see a great, highly entertaining, fast paced MMA fight.
You say that Karo doesn’t look like an athlete? In the past, he didn’t train hard because he relied on his natural abilites. As of late, he has refocused himself to training. On the other hand, every body’s hero Chuck Liddell is 10 times more out of shape then Karo. Plus if Karo was so out of shape, he would lose many fights in the 3rd round instead of winning those fights by decision.

U r absolutly right. Karo is still owed a title fight. If you get hurt while training for your title shot and someone else stepps in to fight the champ, you should be 1st in line for a title shot as soon as you are healthy again. Loosing a #1 contender spot because of an injury is complete CRAP!!! If I was Karo I would b furious towards the UFC!

vIOLENT mIKE,
Karo is not championship material, there is a reason he is fighting this Hector guy. It isn’t because Dana thinks it is “an interesting” match up between Judo practioners. It is because Karo isnt marketable and he is a B level fighter.
Karo lost to GSP the unanimous # 2 contender (moves to # 1 when Hughes beats Serra)
Karo Lost to Deigo Sanchez and looked busted up bad after the fight. Diego is either # 4 or # 5 depending on where you place Koscheck.
Karo fights guys who are B level (see Burkman) and needs to go to the judges scorecards to win. While he beat Burkamn fair and square, it certainly wasn’t in convinging fashion. Burkman is a solid ATHLETE (looks like one and fights like one) and if he had any true skills in the stand up department, Karo would have gotten beat.

I agree that Fitch/Karo would be a good match-up, but I don’t think it will happen. Fitch will get the loser of Serra/Hughes and if (when in my opinion) he wins that one, he’ll get the winner of the GSP / Serra/Hughes winner for the belt.

The 5 first minute of the combat will be a nightmare for Karo , if he can still alive, he can win

I am a big Diego fan and if Fitch completely dominated overpowered and had Diego on the defensive all the time throughout their fight, as much as I like Karo, and this being the first time I have seen Fitch, I really do not see him doing well at all against Fitch at all, in fact I do not think it would get past the second round. I would still like to see Karo fight Koschek though, two of the biggest egos in MMA. That would be a good fight.

Just to let you all know who have no knowledge of the judo world… compared to Hector Lombard… Karo is a JOKE in the judo world… It’s obviously going to have to come down to something other than the judo, because BY FAR Lombard has Karo beat in the judo department. Karo could barely compete on an international level in judo, Lombard was one of the best in the world. This fight is going to be amazing regardless. Regardless of Lombards record and inconsistencies, I definitely would say do not underestimate Hector…. he’s going to surprise many people and especially with both having a judo base, Karo may actually be intimidated by Lombard based on his status in judo.

Gentlemen , I really respect your oppinions and under no circunstances a figther should be judged for his attitude outside the octagon , What really matters in a fighter is if he’s able to put a show worth to watch and Karo Parysian fights are definitely worth it because of his unstopable aggression and unusual takedowns and methods , This fightcard isn’t about Karo and it ain’t about Hector either , This match is made for us ( the fans ) Since they are both from a Judo base this match should be very interesting , I really support this UFC strategy on making even matches ( Or havent you seen for example a really good striker who can’t even fight because the stupid wrestler is just going for his legs over and over again ) If you consider that a good fight you have a very poor sense of entertaintment , So please try to understand , And for all Karo sympathizers Don’t think this match is unfare since Hector is at a Judo level that Karo would only dream of , And he is also a better striker , His only weakness against Karo will be the Battle for controling the nerves wich is debastating for people who fight in the UFC for the first time , So let’s see what happens , Just please don’t be saying something stupid like this is a bad match , Thanks for reading

I dont know where you are from But you are totally right , Sometimes people don’t understand the concept of Olympic material , The Olympics isn’t just a show to watch , The Olympics is a Battle between the top elite athletes in the world to be the Absolute Best , Its very hard to reach this level , So hard that the most famoust Judo guy in the US ( MIKE SWAIN ) Has never won an Olympic Medal , He won a world championship at 73 kg ( just once ) AND THAT’S IT ! , You can clearly see the difference with Dan Hendderson wich is the only guy in the world able to hold 2 world titles at the same time in Pride and Randy Couture who is still at his age is still the UFC heavy-weight champion of the world , They were both in the American Olympic Team and This is the remarcable difference between average and Olympic , So what Judo411 and me are trying to say is to never underestimate Olympic Material , Thanks Again and I hope we can change the minds of those who won’t understand
