Shogun ufc 76
Props: Orange County Register

Quoteworthy:

"From the moment I beat Forrest, everyone will start recognizing me. Here is a America it's the same as Brazil if you fight good.... I fought a lot of top guys in PRIDE. In this transition coming to the United States, I'm going to start everything again. I want to prove I'm No.1 in the world.... I think he (Griffin) is very good. He has great endurance and he is tough. I think it will make for an exciting fight."

-- Mauricio "Shogun" Rua talks about his much anticipated debut against Forrest Griffin at UFC 76: "Knockout" on September 22 from The Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., and more.

Shogun is for real. Besides Fedor, I most excited for this Pride import. Forrest will give him a better fight than most people think, but sooner or later Shogun will make him cry…

Now….. if we could just get Fedor in the octagon.

SHOGUN!

If he beats Quinton again and destroys Chuck, he should get the undisputed champion title. Honestly, he really needs to beat his buddy Wanderlei, but since they won’t fight I guess we’ll never see that.

Shogun is going to win. Without a doubt. He has experience in a cage fighting in other promotions before PRIDE and he has fought in without soccer kicks, knees to the head, and head stomps when PRIDE was in Las Vegas. These changes are nothing new to him.

Shogun wins. Trust me – I read the book AND watched the mini-series starring Richard Chamberlain.

“From the moment I beat Forrest, everyone will start recognizing me.”-Shogun

Yeah.. I am pretty sure that the fans already know who Shogun is, and what Shogun can do, it is only the New Breed of MMA fans (the fans who dont really care what happens as long as they see Knock-Outs) who really never heard of him nor heard of Pride Fighting Championship.

Shogun will never beat Rampage again.

..I think he can still beat him again..but it won’t be the same fight by far..it can go either way..I would love to see this title fight. SHOGUN vs RAMPAGE part 2 for the UFC LWH BELT.

I think it’s funny that Forrest asked for this fight. It’s only because he thinks he has some advantage, but if they were fighting in Pride FC, I doubt he would ask for Shogun. Shogun would knock him out no problem. I think Shogun knocks him out late in the 2nd or early in the 3rd.

by Da Spider on Sep 21, 2007 4:50 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

forest wont beat shogun, he just hasn"t the skills to do so, and he knows it too.

I know I’m going to get a lot of slack for saying this, but I think Forrest has a decent chance of winning. He’s got a good chin (most of the time), and Shogun is not aloud to use all of his brutal stomps/kicks to a downed opponent like he did so many times in his highlight real PRIDE wins. On paper Shogun all the way, but Forrest has the physical tools to pull off an upset. Plus I train here in Vegas at Xtreme Couture where Forrest trains, and his training partners couldn’t get any better. It’s so unpredictable, but my vote is for Forrest…sadly by decision rather than TKO/KO.

Someone needs to start some rumors to get Shogun and Wandi pissed at each other. THEN we’ll see them fight!

“psst…hey Wandi, Shogun said your English sucks!”

Shogun wins most definitely…… but what if …. Randy, that smart little bastard, has found a flaw in Shogun’s game, i.e., when he threw the leg kick and landed the bomb on Sylvia that almost ended the fight in the first thirty seconds, and has drilled into forrest a way to pull the win. With randy in your camp, hell you can’t completely count Forrest out. He’s smart, he’s confident, and with a solid couture strategy, he may surprise some folks.

by James S on Sep 21, 2007 5:40 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Oh, it’s totally possible for an upset I think. Forrest is just so gritty and tough, and he’s improved a lot, he’ll atleast make it entertaining and of course in any bout anything can happen.

Same with Quinton. Shogun and Quinton wouldn’t be the same fight. I’m not a huge fan, but Rampage seems so focused and determined lately, it seems like he makes less mistakes each time he enters the Octogon. If Shogun dominates Forrest he’d be the favorite over Rampage, but if Quinton gets in some good licks and makes it a decision, I think I’d have to put my money on Rampage. It sort of depends on what happens on Saturday.

I put this on the Rich Franklin post as well….Forrest has a big heart and I think with a big heart you can overcome even the most difficult obsticles, meaning beating Shogun. I do believe Forrest will win.

A big heart counts for a lot. but in saying that, Shogun has a big heart and Silva has a big heart. So if everybody has big hearts, you have to start comparing skill sets. I like forrest, i like rich. They are both in tough fights that have the odds highly against them, and for good reasons.

by James S on Sep 21, 2007 6:26 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Let’s be honest, either man could win this fight. Of course, that could be said about any MMA fight (or why watch?0 but seriously, though Shogun is the clear favorite, you can’t be a veteran MMA fan and not know, deep down, that Forest has more than a chance…

Should — could — be a good fight!

by Soups on Sep 21, 2007 6:31 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Forrest doesn’t really have a chance, I’m super-confident that Shogun will win. No questions asked! The only reason that Forret is fighting him is b/c a)he is massively popular (reality show) and b) because he He is spoiled rotten by Dana White. I cant’ think of one weapon Forrest has that can exploit any of Shogun’s weaknesses. Not One.

Not to harp on you specifically but why do people continue to bring this up? Shogun fought less than a year ago in Las Vegas under unified MMA rules (UFC rules). The rule change did not slow him down AT ALL. It was the same always attacking Shogun you see in the HL’s online & its the same Shogun his long time fans are used to seeing.

What people fail to realize is that the soccer kick & stomps were simply used as a very effective tool. They werent relied upon to get the win like the unfamiliar fans are speculating. Anyone who doubts this simply needs to watch Mauricio Shogun Rua vs Kevin Randleman and Mauricio Shogun Rua vs Alistair Overeem since both fights were here in AMerica under UFC rules.

I don’t know about this one…..IMO Shogun will obviously have the advantage with striking…..but if Forrest can use Randy’s technique (push him against the cage, go for the double leg, then some ground and pound) I honestly think he has a chance…… Strikers like to stand…..I see forrest going for the takedown within the first few minutes of the fight….weither he will get it….don’t really know….but I think thats exactly where the coin toss will be….
Can forrest take him down?

Shogun is going to comeout like he did with Randleman. People seem to forget he has a black belt in BJJ, if he gets stunned he could take it to the ground and choke out Forrest with minimal effort.

I was trying to comment to this. Why would Forrest try to take this to the ground? Shogun has a Blackbelt in BJJ. He submitted KEvin Randleman one of the most dominate MMA wrestlers ever in the game. Forrest going for a takedown would be pointless and I think would make the fight that much quicker. SEcondly, Forrest trying to use dirty boxing will only expose him more to the thai clench, and anyone that nows anything about Shogun and Chute Boxe, they have some of the sickest Muay Thai Clench work out of any camp. So what it boils down to is Forrest best chance is to work for the wild haymaker and hope he has the heavier hands and harder chin!

Currently the Pride fighters r doing TERRIBLE against the ufc fighters… u got cro cop loosing twice, menotauro winning but not an interesting fight, dan henderson, shogun who is by far the 2nd best fighter in the world….the fighters r having mental problems to fighting here in the u.s..

Do you still feel this way John? Shogun looked about at aggressive as Gabe Gozaga when he fought Jordan. He looked AWFUL. If Forrest can finish Shogun in the 3rd, I’d FULLY EXPECT to see Rampage destroy Shogun in the first round!!!!
