Report: Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Frank Mir possible

big nog mir ufc
Former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir (10-3) will take on former PRIDE FC heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (30-4-1) in the next fight for both fighters, according to a TAGG Radio report.

No date was mentioned for the clash.

However, the New Year's Eve weekend card on December 29 seems likely, considering "Minotauro" is widely believed to be in-line for a title shot against current division champ, Randy Couture, in early 2008.

Couture is set to leave for South Africa to film a lead role in, "The Scorpion King: The Akkadian," next month. "The Natural" is also recovering from a broken left forearm following his third round technical knockout of Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 74: "Respect."

Nogueira is a mixed martial arts veteran who was victorious in his Octagon debut at UFC 73: "Stacked" on July 7, outpointing Heath Herring on all three judges scorecards. The Brazilian possesses perhaps the most dangerous mix of striking, grappling and experience in the weight class.

He also has a chin made of reinforced steel rebar.

Mir is also coming off of a win, submitting Antoni Hardonk via first round kimura. It was his second win in his last four fights since returning from a major motorcycle accident that nearly killed him and ended his fighting career.

If this bout comes to fruition it will no doubt be an enormous test for Mir — "Big Nog" would be the toughest opponent he has ever faced.

Stick around for more details on this developing match up.

That sounds like a good fight. Nogueira will most likely win but it should be exciting. Hopefully they’ll put this on the New Jersey card.

This has been a dream match of mine since Mir snapped Tim’s arm!

This is going to be a BJJ War, and I am so excited to hear about this, so if Frank Mir wins, he fights Randy Couture next right? Or does he fight Tim/Vera winner? if Tim and Frank both lose, give me a long anticipated re-match!

The old Mir would win this fight. Nogueria looked very beatable against herring. This should be a good fight if Mir comes in shape.

Couldn’t care less about Mir at this point but hopefully we get a few shots of his wife jumping up and down in the audience again. :P

Sick match up. Mir is on his way back to the top. Couture vs Mir. Im not really a “Big Nog” fan. I feel like hes a little past his prime. Should be an amazing fight though.

I don’t see this being a BJJ war like others are saying. Nog has far better standup than he does, and would use it to control the fight for an easy decision. Imagine Nog vs Werdum, but with Werdum having worse standup

I would agree. I’ve always been a big Frank Mir fan, he was the big dog around in the UFC when I got into mma. I felt so bad for him after the accident and when he made his come back completely out of shape.

Hopefully we’ll see the good old Frank Mir again. If he does come back to his best again (he’s only 28) I hope he also gets a rematch with Vera because as good as Brandon is I don’t think he could beat the real Frank.

This sure is a huge step up on competition for Frank Mir. Even before his motorcycle accident he never fought a fighter the calibur of Big Nog.

Since Mir’s return, his first fight back against Marcio Cruz, he lsot by TKO in the first round. His second fight, they let him fight a ‘D- Calibur’ Fighter" in Dan Christianson where Mir eeked out a decision. His 3rd fight is when he took the 1 minute 9 second beat down by Brandon Vera. then in his most recent fight, he submitted Antoni Hardonk in just over a minute – but Hardonk has a groung game equivalent to Butterbean.

Now that Big Nog has gotten that first octagon fight under his belt, I fully expect him to fight like the Big Nog from PRIDE that we all know and love, and not the Big Not that we saw against Herring.

I do not see Mir winning this fights. Big Nog has the better stand up, and he has the better BJJ – his BJJ is one of the best in the MMA world.

I don’t really agree here. Mir, even in his prime, wouldn’t have taken Vera down at all. The result will always be the same there imo. In fact, I don’t think he would have beaten Sylvia if Sylvia hadn’t taken him down for some reason.

Mir is a great fighter, don’t get me wrong. But people are WAY overestimating how good he used to be. He had a TERRIBLE gas tank even before the accident. Just look up his fights with Sims, where he could barely stand. Or how about the beat down he suffered at the hands of Ian Freeman? The only top 10 win he has in his entire career is vs Sylvia (I think Sylvia would win a rematch).

There is no way Mir can beat Nog now. There is now way Mir would have won back in the day. There is no way Mir in his prime could even beat an aging Nog now. Nog is way more well rounded, and can last an entire fight. If they get in the cage, Nog will finish the fight in the 3rd round, after picking him apart in the standup. People will talk afterwards about how Mir is done, and isn’t what he used to be. But the fact remains that a prime Mir would have gassed either way, wouldn’t be able to take Nog down, and would get schooled in the standup just the same

by yohnstoppable on Sep 19, 2007 10:14 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The big question in the HW division is who will fight Randy next. It seems like if Nog can beat Mir, he will get a title shot against Randy. However, what if Mir beat Nog. Mir is in no way deserving of a title shot at this point in his career.

Dude what r u talking about. Big nog dominated Hearing for 3 rds with the exception of the head kick, Hearing did nothing. Hearing threw the head kick like 15 times b4 it even connected.
Yes, hearing would have won the fight if he would have pounced on Big Nog after the head kick, and Noguerra was still wobbly at the beginning of the second rd, too bad Hearing isnt professional enough to come into a fight in good shape because he could have won that fight.

People werent impressed with Noguerra octagon Debut. I dontt hink he looked that bad in that fight. We have to remember that Big Nog already beat Hearing twice. If you are gonna fight the same person over and over, eventually you will loose.

How about Noguerra’s chin. This year has been the year of the High kick. Many great fighters were ko’ed by High kicks this past year (Matt hughes, Cro cop, etc). YOu crack any one in the face with a well placed high kick and 99 out of 100 times u will get completely KO’ed. Big Nog ate that kick and managed to pull off a win.

I dont think his octagon debut was as bad as many people seem to think.

Big Nog is believed by many to be next in line for a title shot against Randy. If Nog fights Mir on December 29th, he wont be raedy to fight Couture until the end of march or eary April. Which means that either Randy wont defend his title again until april which is like a 7 month lay off.

So we will either have to wait till like April to c the Heavyweight title defended or maybe there is still some hope that Fedor signs and possibly fights Randy in early 2008. Prolly just wishful thinking, but its not an impossible scenario. Personally I really dont wanna wait til April of 08 to c Randy fight again.

I hope Mir fights Nog cause i dont want to see Nog and Couture. I really wouldnt be interested in that fight at all.

by Stunnalator on Sep 19, 2007 10:37 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Another thing to keep in mind is whether or not this hints at progress in the Fedor negotiations. Having the winner of Mir/Nog fight for the title seems like a long way off for Randy’s next fight. Or perhaps Randy’s arm is hurt bad enough to warrant that kind of layoff

by yohnstoppable on Sep 19, 2007 10:44 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

This fight between Big Nog and Mir is a chance to c how good Mir
is after the accident. This will be Mir toughest fight of his life. Personally I would love to c them on the matt in a grappling war, too bad the ignorant American Audience will prolly boo them if they fight the wqhole fight on the ground.

ViolentMike: I dont think Nog’s octagon debut was as bad as many people think, but I do agree with you on the fact that I expect Nog to look great in the octagon from here on out. The octagon jitters are gone, his chin will always keep him in a fight, and we all know that its gonna be close to impossible to submit Noguerra.

Of course I wanna c fedor fight Randy, but Randy vs. Noguerra is a great consolation prize. Noguerra is a very smart and well perpared fighter as is Randy. When these two fight, it might be the most technical Heavyweight fight in UFC history.

Noguerra vs. Mir could be the best grappling match in the history of the UFC’s heavyweight division.

if Nog is to fight again b4 fighting Randy, I think Arlovski would have made more sence as Nog’s opponent. Arlovski isnt scheduled to fight anyone and with 1 fight remaining on his contract, he will need to be impressive against a tough opponent. If Nog fights hearing, the only possible opponents for Arlovski will be Gonzaga, cro cop, or Barnett if Dana gets off his ass and signs him.)

bad match up for Mir. Really bad. Nog has an absolute iron chin. He can possibly take the best shot of anyone in mma. He has been absolutely rocked in pride and get through it. This Means Frank Mir will want to take this to the ground? still bad for him. Mir’s JJ is very good but its not better than Nog’s.

Where can he win this fight?

by freestyle on Sep 19, 2007 11:00 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I dont think anyone is going to submit the other. Both are excellent in BJJ. I think this is going to definitely take a (T)KO or decision to end it.

Feestyle: I c this fight the same way you do.

Younstoppable: I also think that this fight is hinting at a possiblilty of a Fedor signing, because it seems odd that Randy wont fight again till April. This news has givin me some hope that maybe the Fedor signing is closer than what we have been led to believe. The only way that Randy wont fight till april is if his Forearm really takes that long to heal. Who knows maybe Fedor will be introduced tonight, in Vegas, in front of a huge TV audience since this event is free on spike.
If Fedor isnt introduced tonight or at this weekend pay per view event, then I dont think we will c Fedor in the UFC anytime soon. Fedor will either be introduced sometime between now and saturday or I doubt we will c Fedor in the UFC.

What a shame that would be.

In a ring yeah Nog in his prime beats Mir in his prime. But Nog looked crap against Herring. I just think the ‘03 Frank would beat Nog at the moment but that’s just my opinion. Then again like someone said there the Nog of ’02 beats even Mir of the same period.

I think Nog ain’t as good anymore but we’ll see I always like to watch him. By the way I always get swayed by my bias towards Frank Mir lol, I thought he was the baddest dude on the planet when I watched him snap Sylvia’s arm.

I’ll reserve judgement on Vera until after his fight with Timmy.

This should be a good fight if Mir comes in shape.

I dont think Noguira looked all that beatable. I mean, yes, he got caught, but anyone can. I think that very few people in the world are as well rounded as Noguiera. I just hope Mir puts up a good fight and earns some respect for his efforts. However, I think Big Nog may be the only heavyweight capable and really testing Randy. I love Randy and all, but you have to want to see him fight the very best, and I think Big Nog is second only to him; unless they sign Fedor.

Made Kongo look like an amateur. Nog is MILES better than kongo and Mir will have his work cut out even if he comes in in shape (which I think he will)

You’re absolutely right Mr Angry. Mir vs Kongo would be a joke. It would take Mir all of about 1 minute to get Kongo to the ground, and then from there, it would be no more than 45 seconds before he submits Kongo, or breaks something if he want’s to be macho and not tap like he should – just ask Tim SYlvia. My boy Carmelo absolutely SCHOOLED Kongo, to the point where any Kongo fan probably had to change the channel. He looked like a turtle on his back. I only say ‘my boy Carmelo’, because my dogs name is Carmelo. If you’re curious, which you’re probably not, he’s a mix of Pit Bull and Rhodesian Ridgeback. MEEELLLLLLLYY MELL!!!

As far as Mir caming in in shape, I’ll believe it when I see it!
