UFC Quick Quote: No excuses for Kendall Grove on Patrick Cote loss

kendall grove mma

" ... I got sloppy off of that clinch ... I threw a knee with my eyes down and he caught me right behind the ear.... I would have changed nothing; I got caught off the clinch. Like I said, it's a fight and anything can happen."

-- Kendall Grove offers no excuses for his upset first round technical knockout loss to Patrick Cote at UFC 74: "Respect" last month in his first post-fight interview with MMAMadness.com. And he still wants to fight Jason MacDonald.

Cote has heavy hands. Like he said, anyone can get caught, it’s a fight. Look at all the upsets lately in the UFC, especially Cro Cop.

Its refreshing to hear a fighter not make excuses after a loss. Kendall has a warrior spirit, but a nucklehead mentality. Hopefully he doesn’t go back to train with Tito, he should stay with Randy. You cant learn anything from Tito except for ground n pound. Training with Randy will teach him a thing or 2 about being a professional athlete and being a class act.

Kendall is young, he has the tools, and he has the heart. If he can stay out of trouble and continue to get better, the sky is the limit.

i hope he does get to fight jason mcdonald, i think he can beat mcdonald, it seems like kendall has a hard time when he fights guys that are heavy hitters, like cote, riggs, and ramirez, and he matches up better with more well rounded fighters like himself…i still think he’s improving as a fighter though, a loss isn’t necessarily gonna stop that from happening, especially with the attitude he’s got…

Well put. A perfect example of throwing a punch at the right time at the right place (ie: Liddell, Crocop). Respectable reply to his loss. But, will he learn from it? We’ll see.

Ramirez was a long time ago, though I don’t think he can get by Jason Macdonald.
He’s young though and he’ll be around for awhile.

kickinthehead, WE READ IT ALREADY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It looks like the lower portion of Tito’s head is finally starting to rub off on Kendall. Since when was his jaw THAT big?

by ViolentMike on Sep 18, 2007 2:36 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

How come all fighters that end up with team punishment have huge heads?? I don’t mean cocky, i mean HUGE head. Look at his jawline it’s turned out to be just like tito’s.

by Homie on Sep 18, 2007 2:37 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Riggs messed him up… Grove needs alot of work on the ground and in the clinch.

by BustYourFace on Sep 18, 2007 2:39 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The only way he’s gonna be around for a while (B/C OF HIS YOUTH) is if he triples as good as he is now. Does anyone even think he’ll compete with R.F or A.S ANYTIME in his life….gimme a break. Yeah he is training and learning, so what. So is that kid Leben, and Forrest, none of which will ever break a B-class rating. And he’s got that Big-mouth syndrome, just the right size of his own foot. J mac would be a good fight for him. Get Hendo back down to Middle weight and see how much bigger his mouth can spread…LOL

by GodDamnMike on Sep 18, 2007 2:40 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Grove is a good, well-rounded fighter but he’s not strong. That’s fine though. Technique trumps strength (as long as you don’t get caught). This is why BJ Penn is able to fight in every weight class under the sun. The dude is a technician. Plus he’s crazy, but that’s another conversation.

I love Grove’s attitude. I liked him before and I like him even more now. Anything can happen in a fight, so when it does, take it like a man and learn from it.

Kendall is always dangerous. He gives opponents a lot to think about in the cage, and has a lot of ways to finish a fight. He’s also got a lot of heart and determination. His TUF finale fight against Ed Herman was epic.

I don’t think you can ask of any more from a fighter.

So the guy is direct and honest about losing a fight and you guys grill him? Damn…. I havent seen or heard of him doing anything outside of hanging from Tito’s nuts that makes him deserve any of this.

I can’t say for sure that anything shady is going on at Team Punishment, but excessive HGH use causes a medical condition known as domus gigantus.

by PW on Sep 18, 2007 3:08 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree with Luppers, what the fu*k is going on with the trashing-Kendall-fest? The dude gets knocked out, in a fight he was winning, and you all decide that he’s a loser? It happens, remember Liddell and GSP?

Kendall is really young and has plenty of time to improve. He’ll be back and most likely even better.

I don’t know about that, Kendall is only 6’6"!!! He is the tallest MW by far. However, I don’t know how much weight Kendall normally walks aound at. But I would think that someone that is in shape and 6’6" would weight more than 185 lbs, so he must be cutting something.

Saying that he’d pretty lean compared to current 185’s would make me think that it would be harder for him to lose 15 lbs. than someone that wasn’t quite as lean, and was rather more ‘soft’ if you will. Its like, who can lose weight easier, a 65 lb annorexic or a 400 lb tub of lard? I would go with the 400 person.

Plus the WW division is full of fighters that are 5’6", including the current champion. That means that it would be the norm for Kendall to have a full foot hieght advantage. That’s rediculous, it’s like Sylvia/Monson every time he fights. Having THAT much of a hieght advantage is almost a disadvantage.

If Forrest can simply last the 3 rounds with Shogun, I would chalk it up as a personal vicorty for Forrest. That is assuming that the UFC Shogun fights just like the PRIDE Shogun.

But the more I see of the Chute Box Camp and PRIDE fighters debuting in the UFC, the more I think that Forrest got a chance at winning. Cro Cop is basically the only PRIDE fighter to be successful in thier first UFC fight. And we all know what happened next for Cro Cop. Yes, Rampage and Anderson Silva are both on tears, starting from their first UFC fight, in the octagon, but Rampage was out of PRIDE for a full year and fought in World Fighting Alliance and Anderson was out of PRIDE for over a year and a half, and fought 3 fights in Cage Rage and fought a fight at Rumble on the Rock. So niether of them came from the PRIDE deal.

Most everyone has heard Juanito and Rampage’s ACCUSATION’s that the Chute Box guys were “juicing” while fighting in Japan. Everyone was doubting it at first. It really makes you think though once you see his brother Ninja fight in Elite XC. He looked awful against Robbie Lawler. Really out of shape, and he was gassed toward the end of a pretty non eventful first round. It was just a matter of time before he got knocked out, and it happened in the 3rd. Also, so far everything I’ve seen of Shogun recently, shows him looking fat. I am very interested to see how he looks at the weigh ins.

Its almost like, Forrest stepped up his training for this fight, and Shogun stepped down. Well, we’ll just have to wait and see come Saturday night.

I think it’s great that kendall got ktfo! Tito is the biggest queer in UFC history. He thinks he’s great b-cause evryone around him tells him he’s the best and he’s the man. His entourage knows that. “you’re theman Tito!” they shouted before LIdell vs Tito 2. what happened, KTFO.
Kendall is also a little arogant for his own good.
It was fate gentleman- kendall falls under average.

p.s-thats great guys you almost poste the same thing….great.?

by carnage on Sep 18, 2007 3:59 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Oh, Kendall will be back and he subs his next opponent in the 1st round. He should stay away from Big Bear though, unless he’s there to train with juanito and “Page” other than that I can’t believe he doesn’t move to Hilo and train with B.J., can you imagine a guy Grove’s size with wicked BJJ? Plus, it has to be 100x easier to stay focused on the islands than it is in LA or LV!

He’ll bounce back. And yeah, very nice to see someone not make up excuses and BS about why they lost. He’ll keep getting better, especially if he stays at Xtreme Couture.

Yeah, cause 2-2 in the Octagon is a reason to throw money down on him right?

ViolentMike: That was a very insightful post! I worry about Fedor, should he ever inter the Octagon will he be the same or just a remnant of his former self!

I too would say based on Shoguns Pride performance if Forrest last til the decision it was a success for him, and for Shogun a let down!

Forrest: “My mama always said life is like a fight. You never know what you are gonna get hit with!”

I like Kendall, he does impose problems with his height and his reach. I would love to see him fight J-Mac. Would be a great match-up for both.

I like watching him fight, I just think he needs to distance himself more from Tito, and quit using Tito’s 10 minute victory dance. Burying the dead and all that jazz, come up with your Kendall. Well he does, it just preludes the tito dance.

I got to give him credit for not making up excuses, once he matures a little I think he’ll be a far better fighter, I’m not a fan of his by any means. I still hate that “dagger” crap from the show, I still cringe every time I see the repeats of TUF…

What? Cote started his UFC career 0-4, so betting against a 1-4 UFC fighter is typically a pretty safe bet.
