UFC Quick Quote: Record-breaking night on Spike TV for UFC 75

ufc 75 on spike

"Not only did UFC 75 showcase the bout that unified the 205-pound Pride and UFC titles, it did so in front of a record breaking crowd at the O2 Arena in London, and in front of the largest U.S. audience to ever tune in to an MMA card during its Spike TV telecast."

-- UFC President Dana White comments on the success of UFC 75: "Champion vs. Champion" on September 8, which captured an average of 4.7 million viewers on the strength of a 3.1 overall rating. It was the largest audience ever to tune-in to a mixed martial arts telecast in North America. For more details head over to MMAWeekly.com.

Mania, how does that compare to other events and shows? Like what are most ESPN football games pulling in, and hit cable TV shows (like on USA, FX, HBO, etc). What could this mean for MMA’s future in TV advertising because I’m sure 99% of those viewers were the coveted males 18-35.

This is awesome news for the sport. Whats exciting to hear alot of these sports commentators starting to give props to MMA. Some claiming that MMA will out grow boxing….I agree

MMA is here to stay. I used to be a big boxing fan but now I am all MMA. Hope UFC we avoid pitfalls boxing did, proper contracts, alphabet soup, to many champions, etc..

I do wish Dana starts to pay better! The fighters deserve more than they’re getting, but they dont need Millions per fight!

Jesus Christ, does everyone on this forum just moan and complain about everything?

As I read these numbers, I’m glad for Matt Hamill because he’s presented with a great opportunity to solidify a very large fanbase if he wins his next few fights. I’m sure Marcus Davis will also benefit greatly from this night if he keeps performing at this level. I’m also glad that Dan Henderson was introduced to the larger American public in this very big way. I suspect that a lot of these millions of US viewers didn’t know who he was or how talented a fighter he is.

On the other hand, I’m sad for Cro Cop because so many of these fans are undoubtedly unfamiliar with the brutality that Cro Cop is able to dish out and will not understand how dangerous he is based on this fight and seeing the Gonzaga ko video replays. If that’s all I’d seen of the man, I’d think he was just a tomato can.

Come on, Mirko! Come down to Legends and train with Bas for the cage! Learn those elbow and knee strikes! I don’t think he threw a single elbow the whole fight!

Hi all,
Admittedly i’m english and am very exited to have a English guy doing so well in what is in my opinion the tuffest and most exciting sport in the world.
I have to say that Hamill suprised me. I’m now a big fan of his as he took the fight srtaight to Bisping and chased him relentlessly. He’s got a great heart, awesome power and even when the result didn’t go his way was gracious in defeat. I was especially impressed with Hamill’s ability to trade in the stand up, something no-one really expected. (especially Bisping) My only critisism of Matt would be he expelled too much of his energy early on… hence when he took Bisping down to the ground he didn’t or couldn’t capatalise. We could all see Hamill visibly tire in the 2nd round and this was why the result would be so close at the end of the fight. This allowed Bisping to get back in the fight.
I found this quote from Jeff Mullen (One of the 2 American judges) which i’m sure many of you may have seen but also many may not.
Jeff Mullen, who has been a UFC judge since 1996, checked in on the popular MMA message board The Underground Forum Monday to explain his scorecard.

“No doubt Hamill dominated the 1st,” wrote Mullen. "He hurt Bisping with a right hand right off the bat and again near the end of the round. He out scored Bisping and busted him up. It was a very impressive round for Hamill but still a 10-9 round. Not dominant enough for a 10-8. Watch the beginning of the second round closely. When Hamill throws the jab, Bisping slips the punch and hits him with his own counter jab. It is hard to see on camera because Hamill’s back is to the camera. His back was also to Goldie (blow by blow announcer Mike Goldberg) who was talking like the beginning of this round was like a continuation of the 1st. If you look you will see that Hamill is facing me, giving me a clear view of what is landing. Bisping was landing the jab again and again and not getting hit.

“Hamill got 2 takedowns in rounds 2 and 3 but did very little with them,” Mullen continues. “Bisping is using an active guard trying to turn for armbars and sweeps, Hamill is doing very little on top. Bisping is keeping him from scoring or improving his position. In the 3rd round Bisping actually lands more punches from the bottom than Hamill does from the top. In both the 2nd and 3rd rounds Bisping does more scoring. Under PRIDE style scoring Hamill would have won. He did more damage, but it was all in the 1st round. By 10 point must system Bisping won the fight 2 rounds to 1. 29-28 Bisping. Sometime the angle you see the fight affects your decision. That is why they put the judges on 3 different sides.”

Food for thought i hope. After all the contraversy, anger and cunfused MMA fans reflect, and the proverbial dust settle’s…. Lets just be thankful that we have 2 fantastically talented young guys that we have sooo much more to see in the future from.

“The re-match ia no-brainer” said Dana White

He knows it and we know it and I personally can’t wait so bring it on.

Peace and out from England

So, the UFC is seeing record ratings on Spike, but they’re still talking about moving to HBO?

Does not compute.

It is my opinion that the UFC never would have seen its meteoric rise in popularity without the exposure they have enjoyed on Spike. Are they going to see anywhere near the same exposure on HBO?

Are they just moving to HBO for the PPVs?

I’m missing something here…

My guess is that they squeeze all they can out of all the newly acquired fighters with their existing stable and raise the value of the operation. Sell it and get out before its value starts to fall like boxing.

UFC has a contract with SpikeTV. Spike and UFC more or less helped each other. Spike needed some “manly” shows and UFC needed the exposure. Once the contract/obligation is over with, UFC will probably have a few more PPVs than usual.
I can see HBO getting the PPVs.

I wondered what the over/under would be on posts until someone mentions Hamill/Bisbing, and the answer was 10.

WOW! Can we please get off of Hammil’s nuts? Everyone can’t stop talking about what a hero he is. All he did was train hard and fight in the octagon like everyone else in the sport. LET IT GO.

They should have a free “fan appreciation” card featuring fights such as Hamill vs. Bisping II, and Tito vs. Rashad II.

They’re going to run shows on Spike and HBO, not switch all its programming from Spike to HBO. In fact Spike not too long ago did a $100 million contract extension with the UFC. Spike will still have all its UFC programming.

I don’t think he’s a hero, and despite the deluge of anti-Bisping sentiments I actually wrote a comment in a previous thread justifying his loss to Bisping. But I respect that the guy walks into the octagon each time totally alone due to his disability yet fights pretty well. Think about how difficult it is to not be able to receive any cornerman advice during the fight. That’s pretty rough. I know that even when I spar or roll, it helps SO much to hear advice being shouted out to me. Even something as small as being told to get my hands up because I’m exhausted and keep dropping them is the difference between blocking a punch or kick and being knocked senseless. I try to imagine what it’s like to fight in total silence with much bigger stakes and far better fighters, and it’s a pretty big disadvantage.

I don’t want to overstate anything, but he fights at a pretty high level completely isolated from any coaching except for in between rounds. I respect that. But I’m not in love with the man. I’m just glad he has this chance, that’s all. A lot of guys don’t get that, but also you can’t take away from the man that he’s earned this opportunity. Again, I respect that. He’s got a lot of potential but needs a lot of sharpening to be a real performer.

By being deaf, Hamill’s not on the same playing field as everyone else, so it does add a little more to his accomplishments in my mind.
