UFC Quick Quote: Chris Leben 'in the best shape' ever for Terry Martin

chris leben

"Things are super good with me. I've been busy teaching at ICON as well as training for my upcoming fight and I'm feeling great. My diet and training routine have been the strictest ever and as a result I think I'm in the best shape I've ever been in. Hawaii is awesome and I'm taking in all it has to offer as well as using the landscape to train on top of my usual regiment. I've been doing tons of running - often while carrying boulders, high altitude training .... as well as my some boogey boarding and swimming too! I'm stoked to get back in the cage and thank you all for your unconditional support!"

-- Middleweight Chris Leben checks in via a recent MySpace message, indicating that he will be in top form when he returns to the Octagon against Terry Martin at UFC Fight Night 11 on September 19. "The Crippler" has dropped three of his last four fights.

I know that a ton of people hate Chris Leben, but I actually root for the kid everytime out. He has heart. That’s the one thing that many good fighters today are lacking, and it one of the only things that not teachable. It seems like just about everyone hates Leben and KOS. Did any of these people like either one of them during TUF season 1? They were the 2 ‘characters’ on the show that hated each other. So naturally, watching the show, a viewer would like 1 and not the other. In my case, I liked Leben more than KOS. KOS and Bobby Southworth acted like punks, that were always trying to start shit.

I wish nothing but the best for Leben. He has to be the underdog going into this fight with Martin, but I will be cheering for the Crippler.

I hated Kos on the show. Mike you are right, Leiben’s got a ton of heart, and a freakishly tough chin. U cant hate a ugy like leiben, he is a true fighter. He doesnt always win, but he’s always ready to throw down. I hope leiben wins this fight because I want him to stay in the UFC. Terry Martin is a great opponent for chris. They r gonna Bang.

Leiben doesnt always go into a fight in great condition. I am excited to hear that he will go into this fight in top shape.
When he is well conditioned he is tough to beat.

Personally, I would like to c leiben or martin fight against tanner. Tanner likes to go to war and I think either of these fighters could put on a great show against Tanner

You said that many of the fighters do not have heart???? what are you talking about? To me everyone that goes into that octagon brings everything. All of them have a lot of heart. Kudos to all the fighters that step into the octagon.

As for Leben, for as much heart as he can have, he is not good. Like someone saied earlier, he is a human (cry-baby)punching bag.

Terry Martin will tear him apart and as usual make Leben cry afterwards.

So fighters aren’t good because they cry? What r u sayin? Leiben is a tough dude. I think his biggest problem has been conditioning. If he is in top shape, he is a tough guy to beat.

I like this match up a lot. Terry and Chris will both come out gunz blazing. Martin better not come out to a micheal jackson song again.

For some reason Martin reminds me of Mike tyson, he is a short stocky dude, his face is simular to Tyson’s, and he throws bombs like him. Picture Tyson comming out to Micheal Jackson’s “beat it”, it just weird!

Does that mean he’s gone to smoking light cigarettes and drinking light beer?

Seriously, I don’t like Leben and I’m rooting for him to lose. But I am counting on him to put up a good fight. Leben is rarely boring and I at least appreciate that much about him.

As a side note to my first post, I said that I liked Leben more than Kos. I should have said that I am a fan of Leben, and I hate Kos.

You said that many of the fighters do not have heart???? what are you talking about? To me everyone that goes into that octagon brings everything. All of them have a lot of heart. Kudos to all the fighters that step into the octagon.

I agree with the part you said about fighters not having heart. Saying that a lot of fighters don’t have heart was rather bold on my part. What I should have said is that Chris Leben has a bigger heart than most of today’s fighters. And if some of today’s quality fighters had the heart of Chris Leben, they would be much better fighters, and possibly champions. Also, I have a ton of respect for everyone that steps into the octagon, well maybe not Alberto Crane or Monstah Lobstah, but that’s besides the point.

You say that because he cried after a loss means he doesn’t have heart? I beg to differ. That actually means he has a TON of heart. The fact that he lost hurt so much that it brought him to tears – that is called emotion, which can be attributed to heart.

Just about everyone on this site say that Forrest Griffin has the biggest heart and because of his heart he’ll beat Shogun…. To my knowledge, when Forrest got KTFO by Keith Jardine he was crying so much that he couldn’t speak more than 10 words, and then ran to hide backstage in his dressing room.

Also Chris Leben is not afraid to get punched in the face, even after a KO loss – unlike Arlovski, Franklin, Timmy, and more.

Instead of using the word heart, and saying that Leben has a ton of it, and some top fighters are lacking it, I should have said ‘a set of balls’. Because I would argue that some fighters today lost their balls and grew a mangina.

Dr. Terry Martin wins by tap due to aggressively psychoanalyzing Leben’s issues with his absentee father. Leben loses, cries, hugs Martin, and in the end is a better person for the experience and begins a long winning streak in WEC.

Chris Leben like I’ve said countless times before on this website, is a guy you would love to have fighting on your side in a bar fight. He is pretty tough and you know he’d put an avergae guy in decent shape on his ass.

Let’s now trnsition to the world of MMA and the UFC … Terry Martin is going to win the fight period because he is just flat out stronger. If Leben were to face a more well rounded fighter like Franklin or Okami, he’d get his sh1t pushed all the way in. It’s as clear as day. I dont even have to mention Silva.

Now who said Chris Leben would beat James Irvin …….

I never said that because he cries he does not have heart. I do agree that he has a lot of heart like the majority of the fighters. There is nothing to be ashamed for crying but every time Leben looses a fight he burst into tears and has to swallow all the bashing, insulting and disrespectful remarks he always makes towards his opponents. I do not have any sympathy towards anyone that disrespects everyone else, thinks of himself as the best thing out there, diminishes everyone and after he is proven wrong, and has to eat his words, starts bursting into tears and play innocent and sincere.

I was a Terry Martin Fan, but then I read the transcript of his interview and now I don’t like him. (go read it, the guy is an a## hole) I hope Leban brings it big time. I know this one is going to be a slugfest, and Leban is on his last legs in the UFC, and I think all that is riding on this fight is gonna be a turning point for Leban. Mark my words here, Leban is gonna come out and crush Terry Martin in the brawl that will be this fight.

Leben is going to get dropped early in this fight. Mike Tyson…I mean Terry Martin is going to come with that overhand right and crush Leben’s face. Its gonna be so bad that I might actually feel bad for Leben, even though I thought the Anderson Silva fight was hilarious.

I agree with you on the talking lobsta, but give Alberto a bit of credit. He fought like a bowl of oatmeal, but at least stayed in the fight after having is orbital bone broken. Many other fighters would have(and did, Josh Barnett vs. CC) tapped after suffering an injury like that.

He says he’s in the best shape of his life and so on, but I’m telling you this, if Chris Leben comes into that Octagon with abs, test him! Plain and simple test that dude if he looks more freakish than normal. I saw it in Gracie when he fought Sakuraba recently and I saw in Franca’s physique when he fought Sherk. I don’t trust this best shape of my life because I boogeyboard crap. Unfortunately this is where we are at right now with this.

Abs on Leben = all out testing.

HE IS JUST SOME PUNK BRO AND CAN KICK ANY NORMAL GUYS ASS OFF THE STREET, BUT WHEN IN COMES TO SKILL FIGHTING OR ANYTHING THAT HAS TO DO WITH TECHNIQUE HE IS NOT GOOD AT ALL!! I PREDICT MARTIN TO CRACK HIS HEAD OPEN JUST LIKE ANDERSON!! LEBEN IS PRETTY DAMN FLABY FOR A FIGHTER ALL THESE FIGHTERS TRAIN AND SAY THEIR IN THE BEST SHAPE OF THEIR LIFE BUT IF THAT WAS ALL TRUE THEY WOULD ALL LOOK LIKE JASON MCDONALD OR GSP!! I KNOW THATS NOT ALL TRAINING DOES THAT TO YOUR BODY, BUT IF YOU SAY YOUR IN GREAT SHAPE AND NEXT FIGHT YOUR IN EVEN BETTER SHAPE YOUR BODY WOULD JUST TRANSFORM INTO A BODY THAT LOOKS LIKE IT WORKS OUT NO MATTER WHAT!!

I’ve read some of his interviews too, and agree this guy is as big of a prick as Kos. All the crap he talked about Ivan Salaverry(part of the reason he came into Billie Jean), and the stuff he’s saying about Leben. He’s just not as classy as a guy like GSP or Randy, this guy talks tons of crap and disrespects all of his opponents. For someone who is so educated you’d think he’d see the benefits of being a class act instead of a pompous a-hole.

I spoke with Martin about two weeks ago. We’ll have the interview up after UFC 75. One thing I can say is that he comes off very polite yet confident. He certainly was not a “prick” when we spoke to him and neither was Kos for that matter.

I agree that correct trainning can mold and develop a fighter but I wouldn’t say all of a sudden, Rampage had his first fight with Eastman in 2000, he developed rapidly by taking on all comers not turning down 3/4 matches like Leben. During 2000 and 2001 Rampage took part in 14 professional MMA fights, which makes the length of time UFC fighters have off seem like retirement. So even though Rampage developed quickly in regards to length of time, when it comes to how he developed in regards to number of matches it did take a long time. So I agree it is possible but I wouldn’t say it is possible for Leben as he doesn’t fight often enough to put the trainning to the ultimate test.

Its better than watching a 5 rd. lay n’ pray!!!! by far! i’ve liked leiben ever since he was on a warpath through the TUF house trying to find Kos and southworth ~ kicking and punching through doors and shit…that was hilarious.

he mosdef needs a rematch with Kos those 2 f’n hate each other.

i could do without the crazy hair dye, but i think leiben is a cool dude. He’ll whoop martins ass! i bet martin’s still got a sore and stiff neck from that flying knee he ate from the “sandman” that was definately a highlight reel KO!!!

I think that Leben is a punching bag as well. I don’t see him winning. Also, I think that having heart also has to do with showing up to a fight prepared and trained as well as you can be. Just because you go into the cage and are willing to throw punches doesn’t mean you have heart…That’s like saying goalie that shows up to training camp 40 pounds overweight is o.k. because he still wants to play.

Hopefully this will be the last we see of Leben…Wasn’t there a previous article that said that he may leave the UFC? I thought last fight was supposed to be his last on his UFC contract, unless he signed one and I missed another article.

NOT EVEN CLOSE MAN.

Leben has 20 pro MMA fights, 9 of which were in the UFC, and he has only been KO’d once in his career. Yup, just once, and that was to Anderson Silva, who is argueable the best pound for pound striker in the game.

Leben actually has a stone jaw, chin of granite, which ever phase you prefer, but now a glass jaw.

Just ask him and he will tell you that there is no other fighter out there that can beat his skills….or his class….Just hate the fact that he dismisses all the other good fighters out there as losers… and he has addressed them as such… there are plenty of fighters out there that can hand him his ass…they just are not marketed the way he was…some dont have a way into these bigger fights. UGH,… I will always cheer for ANYONE that fights Terry….and my favorite is his own knockout highlight….that moment did nothing to quiet his trap.

I thoroughly enjoy reading posts that contain real intelligence. I couldn’t agree more. If you are a professional fighter, why would you come in to the octagon looking like Chris Leben, Tim Sylvia, Rory Singer, or even Karo Parysian. I mean guys at least look the part of a professional athlete when you know millions of people are going to watch you on PPV. You are being paid to train and compete. If anything have a lil self respect and look like a professional fighter for your own piece of mind.

Who knows maybe guys like Tim “bitch tits” Sylvia and Chris “pot belly” Leben just dont care.

A few years ago Leben was getting into 14 fights in a normal 3-day weekend.

If Leben lose this one, Dana should send his sloppy ass to WEC, ART OF WAR, or some bullshit mma organization. He needs work on his boxing skills to be a better striker and not sloppy like he used to be back then. I’d rather see Martin knock or pound his ass out.

Leben has lost 3 of his last 4 fights. In my opinion, when the spider knocked him out, he shattered Leben’s world and killed his confidence.

I’ve always liked Leban. I like his character and his personality. He doesn’t take himself to seriously, but he is always serious when he steps in the octogan. He always tries to put on a good show for the crowd whether they appreciate it or not, he never likes taking a backward step and always gives more then a 100% out there. He is seriously lacking a lot of skills especially in the ground game but, he is always entertaining win or lose. He may not be one of the best and he will never wear the belt, but as far as I am concerned he is one the most entertaining and fun characters out there. He seems like the sort guy that would stop and chat rather than walk straight past like Koschek probably would. I would easily prefer to watch Leban fight than watch Sherk.
Koscheck is a wanker who got brought back down to earth by GSP. Superior wrestling skills my ass. Thats what Diego will do to him next time they fight. That reversal in the fisrt round was sweet. When Diego fights him at 100%, he will get a beating.

Leben will still keep things entertaining. Even when he looses I still enjoyed the fight. This could be more of a test for Terry than people or giving Leben credit for. If Terry makes a mistake and Leben takes him down he could very well find a submission. And if Terry goes in there relying on his striking power he may find out Leben doesn’t hurt easily. On the hand, if Terry does knock him out then this will say a lot about his power. Leben imo has a proven chin, or as they used to call it back in the day, “a beard!”.

Chris Leben like I’ve said countless times before on this website, is a guy you would love to have fighting on your side in a bar fight. He is pretty tough and you know he’d put an avergae guy in decent shape on his ass.

Rofl, Kevin Kelly = MMA and BAR FIGHTING Tough guy…

Not everyone has the type of physique like GSP or Mcdonald but that still doesnt mean that they are any weaker…Examples Fedor; alecksander; shogun; Ninja; ect…

I don’t know why people are so polar about fighters. I ultimately respect both for their efforts. I may pull for one fighter or another, but to simply hate someone to me seems a bit much.

As for people like Terry Martin and Kos they are following the ‘Tito Oritz’ formula. Which says the only bad press is no press. They get in there, they trash talk, and it dosn’t matter if you love’em or hate’em you want to see the them fight, even if its to lose. The people who hate KOS are the ones that are gonna make that guy a super star.

Crippler- He’s a tough guy, and could likely be a top guy with the right level of commitment. However standing there and getting hit hasn’t been working for him.

I don’t think Terry Martin is tough enough to KO him, if this gets stopped it will be referee or doctor stopage. My call is it goes the distance, and is the Crippler by a split.

Did you guys happen to see what Terry Martin looked like as a LHW? He looked like a big ball of brown jello in the ring.

And like Royer said, Fedor doesn’t look like a chizzled professional athelete. BUT he is still the baddest man on the planet. I guess some people just don’t have the genetics to look like a ViolentMike or a GSP. – LOLOLOLOLOL

It is not possible for some poeple to look like GSP or Jason. It is VERY possible however, for those same flabby looking people to be in just as good of shape.

Fellas, this is mma, not bodybuilding. Physique has very little to do with a fighters success in the ring.

On another note: Please don’t ever confuse Terry Martin with Anderson Silva. Silva’s the most dominating fighter (in his weight class) in the entire UFC. Martin has yet to establish himself whatsoever.

While it could go either way, Leben by KO (should be a good fight)

AFTER LEBEN LOSESS THIS FIGHT, I THINK DANA SHOULD NEVER LET THAT PUNK ASS BACK IN THE UFC, I AM SICK OF SEEING HIM AND THE CHANCES OF HIM BEING A CHAMPION ARE LESS THEN US HAVING 4 BLACK PRESIDENTS IN A ROW!!

DO YOU AGREE?!!

by TOPTEAM7 on Sep 7, 2007 1:21 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Terry Martin is going to crush Leben. Leben is the human punching bag!!

After meeting Chris at ICON Fitness in Hawaii, I can honestly say the guy has integrity, respect for others and a fighters heart. To me his positive attitude and actions in and out the gym have spoken for him. I could care less what your predictions were prior to the fight I was rooting for him win or lose.
Thanks for what you do for the sport Chris. Your a great teacher and a positive influence for all of us here in Honolulu.
