UFC 79: Evan Tanner vs. Dean Lister?

evan tanner vs dean lister
Former UFC middleweight champion Evan Tanner (32-6) is rumored to be making his long-awaited return to the Octagon against Dean Lister (9-5) at UFC 79 on December 29, according to MMAonTap.com and Fightlinker.com.

Tanner has been on a bizarre sabbatical since his submission win over Justin Levens at UFC 59 in April 2006. He has been getting back in fighting shape at ChuteBoxe in California after letting himself go for months.

The camp issued a statement months ago that Tanner would return sometime in September. However, those statements never turned out to be accurate. In fact, Dave Meltzer even reported that Tanner isn't even under contract.

Therefore, treat this report as "rumor" until more detailed information comes along -- we've been down this road with Tanner before.

Lister is rehabbing from biceps surgery that has had him out of action since his decision loss to Nate Marquardt at UFC Fight Night 8 in January.

The Brazailian jiu-jitsu blackbelt recently flew out to Croatia to help Mirko Cro Cop train for his upcoming heavyweight bout with Cheick Kongo at UFC 75 this Saturday.

UFC 79 features the welterweight title fight between 170-pound champ Matt Serra and newfound nemesis, Matt Hughes. Wanderlei Silva is also expected to make his return to the Octagon that New Year's Eve weekend.

I hope Tanner will return to the UFC soon.

For sure, UFC 79 could be a pretty interesting show with Serra/Hughes, Wanderlei Silva and Tanner..

I will believe it when I see it, because I am a Evan Tanner fan, and when I hear he was supposed to fight at UFC 76 I got excited, and then got dissipointed. So when it becomes offical, I will be happy, because Tanner is a good fighter, but he is going up against a guy with incredible submission skills, that could counter Tanners ground and pound.

Who wins? I dunno tough match-up for Tanner.

Im a tanner fan also, and I will be disapointed if they make him fihgt the boogyman. Tanner is a braweler, and I dont wanna c him fight against a grappler wit no stand up. Throw Tanner in the cage wit a young up and comming brawler. Tanner will put you through the fire (as he did to tarrell). Tanner migh not win, but his opponent will get tested in the cage. Throw him out there wit Kendall Grove, or Mcdonald

If he does come back, I’ll asume it will be at middleweight?

i agree,

he should not be fighting lister but then again look who vera is fighting after a year absence. i hope it will be on the main card and not a prelim. so far dec looking pretty good

I’m with “Mr. NC-17,” I’ll get excited when I hear it from the UFC.

What’s more interesting about this post is Lister training with Cro Cop. Imagine Cro Cop with serious submission skills. Yipes.

Im excited about Tanner’s return as well, but Lister is a pretty tough dude, but then again so is Tanner. I hope the UFC finally brings him back.

Any infusion of skill into the middleweight division is welcome. Its not like Tanner is going to be a serious threat to the belt, but the division is still seeking out some permanent talent.

by Mahde on Sep 3, 2007 1:48 PM EDT reply actions

Hmmm…if he comes back, will he stay at 185 or will he bump back up. He used to fight at light heavy didn’t he. I think that would be a huge mistake with the way LHW division is stacked now. The MW div could use the addition though. As for a title under his name, I doubt it too, but your right Mahde we need some more permanent fighters there who are skilled and exciting. Tanner is the right man for the job!!

i dont c how ppl can “type” outcomes of fights and be so sure on different aspects of it..two trained fighters same weght class lets just watch and comment after..i mean didnt cote just ko groveand wasnt paul buentello once the number one contender at one point in time!!?

Tanner is getting old, and he is no Randy Couture, If he is gonna try n make a comeback it has to be now. I hope he does come back, i’m curious to c how he looks in a cage since he moved to Chute box.

I would like to c him fight TUF guys because Evan Tanner is beatable but he defenitely wont go down easy. He can really test
young fighters, so that we can find out what they are made of, kinda like he did against David Terell. Baptism by FIRE.

Tanner: Comeback or no Comeback, he is with out a doubt one of the biggest warriors I have ever seen compete in the octagon. He had this mix of strong wlll, some mental problems, and a never say die attitude that enabled him to will his way to victory after taking serious punishment. I would like to c him in the octagon a couple of more times.

I agree he should fight a young brawler. Tanner is a good benchmark for future talent. Im not saying he’s like Elvis, but Tanner will never be amongst the top guys ever again, but he’s good enough to rough up a couple of these new egos trying to get into the mix

by Stafo on Sep 3, 2007 4:42 PM EDT reply actions

TANNER IS BACK! I heard he wants to fight middlewheight champ Anderson Silva or perhaps Rich Franklin. Dean Lister is tough but he’s too technical which could make the fight boring, i never seen Lister won with a knockout or spectacular fight. I hope Tanner will beat his ass up!

Tanner by way of bloody exhausted decision.

Tanner is someone who would give anderson silva incredible problems.

If you think UFC veterans arn’t a threat to titles, let me introduce you to Matt Serra, Shawn Sherk, BJ Penn, Travis Lutter, Dan Henderson and of course Randy Couture.

Crocop is nearing retirement and he’s been fighting for many years. Can’t change a playah’s game in the tha ninth inning yo.

Franklin beat the snot out of him twice already. A third match-up should never happen.

dude evan tanner was the man. I even went to his dinky little website there and read his journal about when he fixed up this boat and started living out of it. The dude is crazy. And crazy good at MMA.

I cant wait to see him back in action. Dean Lister is a good submissions guy but if Tanner comes back in the same shape…… no way does Lister have a chance. If Tanner has ring rust then its a toss up.

by djpullout on Sep 4, 2007 8:41 AM EDT reply actions

I just hope Dean has gotten his cardio where he needs to be for his weight. His last showing was pathetic, he gasses after the first round. He is the most methodic BJJ practitioner in the UFC I think. Once he gets ahold, you are done, its like the Royce Gracie of old. Dean Listers is far and away my favorite fighter in the UFC.

If Dean Listers cardio is where it needs to be, I don’t think Tanner will stand a chance. Well, a punchers chance of course.

As for Lister, incredible ADCC grappler and submission specialist but he will always have problems in MMA because of everything else that goes with it.

Being a three point specialist in the three point shootout at an allstar game doesn’t make you a great basketball player during an actual game because of all the other aspects to the game.

Tanner should take that fight. It’s all up to him and his conditioning.

John, you said that you woule like to see Tanner in there with a stiker, but then you list 2 possible opponents, one of which is Jason MacDonald. J-Mac is primarily a BJJ fighter as well. Not so much as Lister, but he does specialize in BJJ.

CroCop has supposedly been training MMA for how many years??? I REALLY don’t think that 1 or 2 months with Lister will have any affect on CroCops game. He is a stand up fighter, and will never be anything else. At this point in his career, it is actually almost pointless for him to try and train extensively on his BJJ. All he needs to know as far as BJJ is how to avoid submissions, and how to not look like a turtle when he is on his back whether its full or half guard.

Tanner is someone who would give anderson silva incredible problems.

I would have to disagree. If Rich Franklin, who everyone thought was unbeatable in the MW division got destroyed by Silva, (and the same thing will happen again in October), then I do not give Evan Tanner a chance in hell against Silva. That would be the worst fight possible for Tanner. His life would be at risk. Unless he can win about 2 – 3 fights (not all against TUF alumni), then put him in a #1 contender match

Why are we being subjected to another Dean Lister fight? Does Dana hate us? Wait, don’t answer that.

I mean against someone that could at least punch his way out of a wet paper bag. Lister is a phenomenal grappler but his stand up is non exsitent. J – mac is an up an comming fighter, primarily a grappler but he can stand n fight when he has to. Listers stand up is a joke….thats all Im trying to say. Whats wrong wit Tanner vs. Grove? Grove strikes but comming off a loss but I dont think Dana would risk is investment by throwing him out there to possibly loose 2 in a row against Tanner

agree 100%……… I dont even wanna c him catch a beatdown from Silva…. His life would b at risk . He is a perfect benchmark too weed out the pretenders from the contenders

i would take tanner…… but dana white already said tanner wont be returning anytime soon but its always fun to imagine matchups

by ZACH on Sep 4, 2007 1:51 PM EDT reply actions

Cant wait to see Tanner back in the cage. He should fight a bigger name then Lister. plus Tanner would smash Lister, and forget about Lister submitting him. If anyone got tied up it would be Lister. Tanners no joke, and he is traing at chute/box. he’s comin back better. I hear Bisbing is droppin to 185, how bout that match? But for now give him someone like Patrick Cote or even Kendall, not a submission specialist who’s coming off surgery. I want to see a war. and Tanner always brings it! win or lose!

by HeadKnock on Sep 6, 2007 7:22 AM EDT reply actions

I have faith in Evan Tanner! He might be down now but he has what it takes to get himself back in fighting shape. He will come back when HE is ready to come back. I dont think there is a fighter out there right now in the middle weight div that can take him when he is 100%. EVERYBODY IN VEGAS LOVES YOU EVAN!!!!
