Last stand: An agreement to end the Fedor Cold War in sight?

PRIDE FC Heavyweight Champion Fedor Emelianenko — the most coveted mixed martial arts free agent on the planet — is scheduled to meet with UFC officials in Las Vegas, Nevada, today to discuss contract terms, according to Sherdog.com.
Here's snip from one of his managers, Apy Echteld:
"Our trip is not to shop between the organizations but to come to a final solution. Unless we go for the UFC, Fedor will be a free agent."
The International Fight League, Strikeforce and K-1 are other potential suitors for the Russian's services; however, the report indicates that the UFC has made the best offer to date.
Unfortunately, it seems the two parties still seem far apart on the same details that we recently passed along. Namely, if Fedor signs on the dotted line he wants to be able to also compete in Russian Sambo tournaments, have fights on Russian soil and also ink other fighters from his Red Devil training camp to UFC contracts.
If the UFC lands Emelianenko, UFC President Dana White has indicated that he will receive and instant title shot against current titleholder, Randy Couture. In fact, "The Natural" even requested the bout after his recent win over Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 74: "Respect" on August 25.
It sounds as if this is final meeting in a courtship that has been months in the making. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Does anyone else hear UFC 80: Fedor vs. Couture on Super Saturday 08?

just get it done damn it! i don’t care if he enters in sambo in russia, he just as likely to get hurt training for fights as to get hurt with sambo, just do it

This could be it. If all the parties hit the table and fix what seem to be relatively fixable issues, we may hear a huge MMA announcement. All the ground work has been set. The UFC has put the best offer on the table, Couture wants him, and the fans love him. Let’s get it done.

Wow. Overrated? It’s not just the fans who think of him this way, it is pretty much every pro fighter on Earth. There is a reason for this. Randy wants to fight him because he is the best.

I think that today’s the day guys!
Like I said in a previous thread today, the fact that Randy beat Gabe and said that he now wants to face the best HW on the planet, which is Fedor.
In a recent interview with Fedor, he had nothing but compliments for Randy (I mean who doesn’t).
If the dotted line isn’t signed today, I think the UFC will lose Fedor. But my instincts say he signs today. I mean how is he going to be considered the baddest man on the planet, best fighter in the world, if he’s fighing in the IFL or BoDog.

Overrated..hahahahhahah. Considering hes undefeated in 27 fights..1 coming a no contest because of a 15 second cut in the first round, has knocked out the best in the world, has been the pride heavywieght champion for almost half a decade, you call him overrated?? If you like Couture thats understandable because so do i and i would be going for couture if they were ever to fight, but to call him overrated!! Buddy they’re paying Cro Cop $350,000 a fight…just wait until you see Fedors first payday.

Very true ViolentMike. Some of Fedor’s ego has to come into play. If he never fights Randy or the other UFC fighters, years down the road people will say about him “he’s the best, but….”
Fedor has to sign. They can work out the scheduling between the Sambo tournaments and ppv. I’m sure the UFC will be happy to sign some of his team members, esp. Alexansdar. I’m willing to bet that the UFC is even promising him a fight in Russia. It will be done.

Fedor seriously has a lot of outstanding contrat requests. Its not just that he wants to fight in Russia, for Russian organizations, and wants to sign his fellow fighters, its that he wants to fight for other american MMA organizations aswell. Thats been the big hold up. Fedor thinks that the ball’s in his court, prolly will be until he is upset in the UFC.

Gotta get this deal done!..
Dana wants to take over the world! with Feddor, he can invade Russia. So throw a couple of his red devil fight teamates on the
Prelims. In liverpool the UFC showcased a bunch of british fighters. Its a win/win situation
Dana can take over another Market (Russia)
Fedors teamates will get a shot to show what they got, if they do well, than let em fight in America. And we will all get to c the greatest fight of all time Fedor vs Randy.
Its a Win/Win/Win/Win/win SITUATION!!!!!!

I may be alone on this but I feel that Randy needs to fight either Nog, Crocop, or another fight before he fights Fedor. I mean Sylvia basically gave Randy the belt and Gonzaga was not highly ranked and was inexperienced. I’d like to see Randy in another fight to see if he got what it takes to face Fedor.

If you would have told me Couture had a chance of fighting Fedor back in April, I would have considered it an execution in the waiting. But now, even though Fedor is a bad man, Couture has made a believer out me.
Fedor has to sign with the UFC. If he doesn’t his lore will outweigh his actual accomplishments.

My feeling is that Randy has spotted a hole in Fedor’s game — that’s why he’s so eager to fight him. I read somewhere that Fedor wants two warm-up fights in the UFC before facing Randy, which I think is smart.
Although Fedor is widely regarded as the best fighter on the planet, he is not invincible. Fujita almost put him away (Fedor was doing the twinkle-toes dance) and Hunt, a kickboxer no less, almost submitted him. He cuts easily and doesn’t have a lot of knock-out power (most of his wins are by decision or submission). Knock out power is Randy’s bane and Fedor doesn’t have a lot of it. Plus, Randy is familiar with the octagon.
That being said, like Randy, you can never count out Fedor. In addition to Fujita and Hunt, he’s been spiked on his head by Randleman, and yet he came back to win all three in a decisive manner.
If Fedor takes it seriously and trains properly, Fedor by decision.

I will be really surprised if he signs with the UFC. I don’t expect him to, the limitations they want to impose on him (and rightfully so considering the price they’d have to pay him) will drive him elsewhere.
Sad too because I’d really like to see him fight in the UFC. I really think of late Fedor is overrated and the different rules, cage etc I think would have a huge impact on him in the UFC. Fedor is an awesome fighter but he hasn’t been busy against top-tier opponents for a while. He needs to sign with an org that can prove that he is still of of the most dangerous fighters in MMA.

Huge fan of Fedor…always have been. I think he is definitely the favorite in a Fedor/Couture fight, however Couture surprised me big-time against Gonzaga.
Sure Gonzaga didn’t have the experience, but what strikes me as kind of odd is even in the Gonzaga/Crocop fight Randy was picking Gonzaga to win. Don’t you find it odd that Randy would go out on a limb and say this unexperienced fighter (Gonzaga) had a great chance at beating such a decorated and accomplished fighter as Crocop?
What do you guys think about Fedor in the cage? Do you think that Randy will be able to use it to his advantage and pull off a victory?
My moneys on Fedor, but I can never doubt Randy.

As much as i want him to sign with the ufc, i kind of dont see it happening. Dana and the fertitas are tight asses when it comes to negotations (and rightfully so, considering they run the biggest mma organization in the world). Fedor is the best heavyweight alive, theres no question. I just dont know if they will be willing to bend as much as fedor’s management is trying to get them to. If they sign Fedor, that would be great… but he will probably be offered a lot of money anywhere he goes and some other organizations (such as K1) might be more willing to give in to his demands to get the number one fighter in the world.

Dana not signing Fedor cause of him fighting in Russian Sambo tournaments is like being a basketball team in the 90’s having a chance to sign Michael Jordan and they pass because Jordan wants to play in the Olympics.
I just watched Pride Decade and Lorenzo Ferttita gave this speech at a conference to the Japanese right after they bought Pride and he basically said “we bought Pride because we are fans of mma and we want to create the dream matches everyone has always wanted to see. It’s not about money.” I don’t buy him for a second but if he really meant that he needs to sign Fedor no matter what the risk to their investment is! Put your money where your mouth is Ferttita!
by Steve on Aug 30, 2007 1:27 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Also, it’s all in the wordingm, check it: “Our trip is not to shop between the organizations” = “We’re only here for the UFC”, “We have personally come here for the UFC.” Why go somewhere, personally, that a conference call couldn’t do. This is very exciting and is heavily leaning towards Fedor getting signed. Mania, commence your blog entry titled: UFC SIGNS FEDOR! and RANDY-COUTURE 2008! and RANDY UPSETS THE CYBORG!… i’m getting carried away, but I can still hope :D

I can see a few people beating Fedor in the UFC, but then again, I said the same thing when he was in PRIDE and that didnt happen, so whatever. Fedor is the man, Randy is the man. Lets find out who is THE MAN!!! Actually the only way I see Randy losing any fight, is him getting KOed, and Fedor hasnt really KOed anyone. And Randy WILL NOT get submitted. I say Randy by GnP, or Fedor by Decision. And if I had to pick, I will say Randy. I would feel less bad if I picked Randy and he lost against the best fighter in the world, then if I didnt pick Randy and he won. I would continuouly give myself a million “I knew it’s” daily, if that happened.

Hopefully this signing will happen and we’ll get to see Couture smash this overrated chump.
These are some comments about Fedor from some of the best fighters in the world… not just keyboard warriors… i think if these fighters think so highly of him that he is far from overrated.
-“Fedor is the best pfp fighter in the world.” – Randy Couture, UFC HW Champion
-“Fedor is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world aside from bj Penn, those 2 are the best fighters in the world.” – Rampage Jackson, UFC LHW Champion
-“It’s FEDOR dude!” – Eric Pele
-“He is the BEST.” – Mark Coleman, former UFC HW Champion and Pride GP Champion
-“The best in the world, no doubt.” – Phil Baroni
-“Look, I’ve fought many people from around the world, so I’ve seen many strong fighters. But like him, never.” – Renato Sobral
-“Fedor is on top now, it’s hard to beat him now.” – Pedro Rizzo
-“NOBODY wants to fight Fedor.” – Wanderlei Silva, former Pride MW Champion and GP winner
-“Our great champion, he is the BEST in the world.” – Josh Barnett, former UFC HW Champion and ADCC Champion
-“Fedor has no equals in Sambo or MMA.” – Aleksander Mikhailin, 3-time World Judo Champion and Fedor’s former training partner
-“Fedor would be absolutely great in K-1.” – Ernesto Hoost, 4-time K-1 World Champion
-“Fedor has no weakness! I have seen so many fights, and even the best fighters in the world have a flaw in their game but I have yet to find one in Fedor Emelianenko.” – Bas Rutten, former king of Pancrase and UFC HW Champion FSN
-“Probably the best ever lived….he’s a living legend right now and I don’t think there’s a man on this planet who can beat him; the man is unreal. Pound for pound the best in the world.” – Diego Sanchez, hooterandgreenway radio show
-“Fedor is my favorite.” – BJ Penn, former UFC Welterweight Champion and BJJ world Champion, NWFS 7/9/06
-“Fedor is the most incredible fighter you’ll ever see.” – Frank Trigg
-“Fedor is pound-for-pound best in the world.” – Shamada (Pride referee)
-“Fedor is a machine.” – Don Frye
-“The best fighter to climb into ANY areana is Emelianenko fedor. He is in his own league and you can’t compare nobody.” – Kevin Randleman, former UFC HW Champion
-“Fedor is just too dominant, too good at punching people in the face. The way he punches people man he’s trying to kill people, with both hands. He’s in a whole different class by himself.” – Brandon Vera
-"He is the best and undefeated… His striking game and his ground game is the best, so that’s why he is the best… He is the sh*t " – Mark Hunt, K-1 World Champion
-“He’s the total package; looks can be deceiving. He’s incredibly strong, his hips are amazing, probably his best asset. Hard to hold down, hard to do anything with the guy………shit he’s just the best, that’s why he’s the best. He gets in position to throw the big bombs, he throws just as hard on the ground as he does on the feet. That’s why he’s the world Champion.” – Mark Coleman
-“He’s the fastest I’ve ever seen. Much faster than Mirko. And he’s got a great reaction. Technically he may not have such a big advantage, but physically he is the fastest heavy guy in MMA history. He tries a punch, misses it, then immediately shoots again, Cro Cop for example didn’t even see them coming. He must practise that a lot, because it’s not easy to improvise that kind of thing. He is really with a good combination of styles, he can go from one art to the other, that’s what makes him different.” — Antonio Rodorigo Nogueira
-“He has a fast eye, good for counter-attacking. And in every fight he shows up with something new under his sleeve. Against Filipovic he used a great clinch-strike combo: he’d go for the uchi-mata, quickly following with a powerful hook.” – Pedro Rizzo
Liddell: ’I’ll fight anyone, Silva? Yeah sure, Quinton Jackson? Sure, Randy Couture? Sure’
Reporter: ‘What about Fedor Emelianenko?’
Liddell: ‘Well if I’ll have to…I’ll fight him…if I have to’

he isnt going anywhere but the ufc.
dana said he will sign the guy no matter what and he wants the randy vs fedor fight as soon as randy’s arm heals. fedor wants to be in the ufc to fight top talent like randy and maybe to shut up big tim much like vera will do.
he will still fight in sambo but im sure dana will want him to wear a ufc shirt or something dumb.
randy vs fedor @ ufc 80 something.
finally all the hardcore randy and fedor fans will settle who is the best fighter. i would be cheering for randy but fedor is a monster. i see a battle of will to enforce each fighters game plan with neither one backing up. i still think randy get tko’d but if randy gets fedor in the clinch against the cage then he has a good chance of winning rounds to get the dicision. i still think fedor has to many ways to win, but you can never count out randy cotour.

Whoever said Fedor doesn’t have power hasn’t seen him fight. He gets a lot of subs instead of TKO because he is a submission machine. Mark Hunt had a kimura deep on him and he didn’t even flinch, got out and subbed Hunt. He’s a machine and I can’t see Randy beating him. Sure he beat Sylvia and Gonzaga, but neither one of those is even close to Fedor class of fighter. Love Randy but this will be the end most likely.

F*** Liddell vs Silva, THIS is the fight I want to see. Fedor has been widely regarded as not only the best heavyweight on the planet, but the best p4p fighter on the planet for years.
He has nothing but respect for Couture, and has named Couture one of his favorite fighters for a while now. ’
On the other side of the coin, Randy has expressed a ton of interest in fighting Fedor as well, and considers Fedor the best
This would be the 2 biggest mma stars of our generation, who have nothing but respect for each other, getting to compete on the big stage. This is also the ULTIMATE Pride vs UFC fight. The most popular ufc star and heavyweight champ vs Pride’s most popular star and heavyweight champ.
I hope Fedor signs. I will buy tickets for the event and make the trip to watch him fight, no matter where it is

I don’t think Fedor is being greedy at all. If you look at his main demands that the UFC hasn’t gotten on the same page it is signing some of Fedors teammates from red devil, bringing fights to russia and competing in Sambo in russia. It is pretty obvious to me that he is trying to use his name to bring russia to playing a bigger part in the MMA world. Not greedy but pride in his country. I think that is very classy.

If that’s true its bullshit.
Not true unless that was Babalus last fight. What do you think a Contract is?? Its a legally binding document. You cant just say your not fighting for my organization because of an intolerable act. Thats one of the reasons for having a contract. If say Tito signed a nine fight deal and lost 8 fights he would still be entitled to his 9th fight. Now if Dana says i will pay u the amount i was going to pay you if u won all the fights left on your contract then that im sure would be perfect for babalu…but knowing cheap ass Dana, i really doubt hes gonna do that

This is one greedy russian..my god,
Dana will do what ever it takes so im sure he will sign but I dont think its fair to G give him the tiel shot right away and I dont think its fair what his demands are for the negotiations. But RC wants Fedor so w.e.
All he is trying to do is get the Russian market integrated with the Western MMA side of things. And you call him greedy. Dana is trying to put so many stipulations on signing him and trying to exploit his Huge name in MMA. Now which one is the greedy one??

He has to sign w/the UFC. Those other mma organizations are nothing compared to the UFC. Fedor has proven himself with PRIDE (WAS at the moment the best mma organization in the world). I think the most logical and smartest move would be to join the UFC. Im pretty sure that Fedor wants a piece of Couture and we all know that Couture wants to fight Fedor.
There’s no doubt that Dana White is gonna give his best effort to sign Fedor. I hope this deal gets done and if it does, I hope Fedor doesnt have to go through ‘warm-up’ fights. The signing of Fedor would be the biggest thing to happen in mma’s history. Lets hope it gets done.

I hope today is the day, but my question is when he fights randy, and say he loses where does that put him, is he no longer the greatest that people claim he is, will he be put in the chuck liddell bracket as washed up. Dont get me wrong I am a fedor fan but people give fedor a unbeatable persona, which in MMA is never the case. Bottom line is he will lose sooner or later, though all fight should be great to watch.

Do you have a link for that interview?

WoW Last night I thought today I would wake up and see that I matched all Six Numbers on the Lotto, now I realize this is why I felt that way this is better!!!!
If the turn out of post here are any indications, this fight would break all previous ppv totals worldwide!!!
This fight would be bigger than Frazier vs Ali!!!
My prayers are with Dana and Fedor!!

WHAT!!! This is the CRAZIEST thing I’ve heard all day. Randy is the HW CHAMPION of the UFC. You are saying that the Champ needs to win a #1 contender match to fight Fedor? You got it wrong there buddy. Also, why would you want an even older Randy fighting Fedor? If anyone needs a warm up fight, its Fedor. He’s never fought in the octagon. But neither of them need one, and there won’t be.
I can just see it now if Randy wins. All the Fedor nut huggers will be saying that it was his first fight in the cage, it wasnt fair, he should have gotten a warm up fight first to adjust to the octagon…..

I agree with UFC_FAN to an extent. I’ve seen a lot of people say Fedor wouldn’t be a big draw, but I don’t think that is true. Any mma fan who even has an internet connection has heard about Fedor, with most having at least seen highlights of his fights. He is ranked #1 everywhere you go.
Those fans will do plenty of word-of-mouth advertisement for the ufc. Add in the hype, which Dana and co are really good at, and you have yourself a HUGE ppv buyrate. Hell, Randy just being ON the card is guaranteed to draw plenty of buys

I will buy tickets for the event and make the trip to watch him fight, no matter where it is
Thanks for saving me the time of typing Younstoppable!!

Well, right now, its just about 1:30 pm in Vegas. (they are pacific time, not mountain, right?) I wish I knew what time the meeting takes place. The way everything sounds on both ends, Dana and Fedor’s management, it sounds like they are here to sign the contract at the dotted line for a fight against Randy Couture once Randy is all healed up to make for the biggest fight in MMA history. So I guess we may have to settle for Rampage/Hendo as being the 2nd biggest fight in MMA history.

Maybe it could be an all Title bout card.
Every weight division!
Shogun vs Lidell or Rampage or Henderson?
Sylva vs ? Okami maybe.
Hughes vs GSP
Penn (assuming he wins title) vs ?
Just dreamin!!!

Dana was on media conference call earlier this afternoon. The highlights were posted on a rival ufc blog site and it said, “White said that he’s been meeting with Fedor’s people for months and that he hopes to have an announcement soon, but he seemed to downplay a report that said a deal could be reached today.” Sounds like it may not be today.

Wow. People just think that Fedor will DESTROY Couture because Fedor is the #1 fighter in the world. No one gave Couture a chance against Sylvia, but after the fight people said that Sylvia wasn’t a legitimate champion. People said that the larger and younger Gonzaga was going to take his belt away for good. After the fight, people said that Gonzaga was “inexperienced” and that is why Couture beat him. How long will it take you people to realize that Randy is for real? This guy has a gift for picking people apart. You don’t know what to expect with him- he will find anyone’s weak point and capitalize on it before they are comfortable enough to get busy. They say “Well he got destroyed by Liddell twice, how can he beat FEDOR?” So What? People should realize that Liddell has the perfect style to beat Randy. And Randy has the potential to beat Fedor on any night. Put simply, if you have a single advantage over someone, you can beat them with that advantage at any time and it won’t be a fluke. Randy has better wrestling, octagon experience, dirty boxing, and possibly better conditioning. Fedor has better striking, submissions, and probably is stronger. As far as Randy is concerned, Fedor is Gabriel Gonzaga on a higher level. I will bet on Randy when it happens- In my opinion, he is the greatest MMA champion of all time.
Oh, and to you guys who doubt Liddell- I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Chuck knocked out Fedor. I would actually bet on Chuck. Like I said before, you need to think about their styles.
Who is the most likely to beat the great Emelianenko? I say it would be Arlovski if he got back on track.

This will be both of their toughest fights and I say Randy by GnP.

12122121, based on previous posts, you have a strong basic understanding of MMA. However, based on your statement, you still have alot to learn about the history & combat intangibles that make up the deciding factor when comparing 2 fighters. Start watching some past fights of the fighters you comment on in their entirety. You can’t sum up a fighters ability by HL video alone. Theres so much more to it.

For a huge Randy fan, you sure don’t give him much credit. Fedor went the distance with pretty much all the best guys he fought, especialy a gased , one dimentional CC he couldn’t smash easily so how is he going to easily smash a well rounded fighter like Randy. Either you think Couture is no where near CC and Nog or you think fedor easily smashed them. Fedor might be able to beat Randy , but nobody is going to easily smash him.

As to my post about FEDOR being announced in LONDON. you can say whatever you want about fedor and how great he is, and i agree that he’s one of the best ever in mma, but so is couture. if they have a title fight i think randy can take him just based on conditioning, the weakest part of fedor’s game is clearly fitness…i can easily see couture pulling some more of his dirty boxing game, closing the distance and then just wearing him down in the later rounds. if this fight happens i say couture by ground and pound in the 5th
