Report: Stevenson breaks nose in UFC 74 win over Pellegrino (Update)

Props: NBCSports.com
Quoteworthy:
"... Stevenson took a step closer to becoming a No. 1 contender in the lightweight class with a unanimous decision victory over a game Kurt Pellegrino. After a back-and-forth two rounds, Stevenson took over midway through the final frame, battering Pellegrino with fists and elbows to earn the decision. Stevenson broke his jaw in the first round but gutted out the win."
Update: Stevenson thought he broke his jaw, but it turns out it was badly bruised. He did, however, sustain a broken nose in the first round of the fight. He has been suspended for three months by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC), but can return sooner if he recieves medical clearanace. Thanks to "Mr. Sunshine" for the update.

That was one hell of a right hand he took in the first. I’m surprised he took it so well

you guys (NBC) dont know anything. He was just on the sherdog radio show and Stevenson said he broke his nose not his jaw. No what you are posting before you post it.

I applaud anyone fighting two more rounds(and winning) with a broken anything. The only bad part is it means more time to heal before they can start training again.

Ricky,
Before you are critical of anyone, you should learn how to spell.
Case in point:
“No what you are posting before you post it.”
That should be “Know”…Not “No”.
Ooops!
(Disclosure: I can’t spell either)

I know exactly what punch it was, it was when Joe was on his back and Kurt knelt down with one knee and launched a big right hand Karo Parisyan stlye. Everyone in my house was loud when that landed, I would have liked to see The batman knock him out with that one. the guys standup was quick in the beginning of the fight

I didn’t catch the Sherdog radio interview. I’ll look into it — if the NBCSports article is incorrect.

Mike Goldbert – what a jerk off!!!
Did you all notice that at one point between fights, while the camera was directed towards the colored lights in the rafters, Goldy may have said his most classic line ever.
“Wow, this UFC stuff is pretty cool, huh”
Are you kidding me….

Did Joe say when the jaw/nose break occurred? I thought it may have happened during the suplex.

A little off topic, but did anyone notice GSP’s ring attire? I think he stuffed his jock strap with a cheese grater! Honestly, the ref should have made him reveal whatever consealed weapon GSP had down his shorts.
Also, would Dana just fire Goldburg already! Anyone else notice that one time between fights when the camera was pointed at the colored lights in the rafters, Goldy says-
“WOW, this UFC stuff is pretty cool, huh?”
Now that’s a classic by the resident UFC jerk off, Mike Goldburg.

Sorry to get off topic buy U kno whats crazy
The odds for the following fights are:
Dan henderson 120
Rampage -150
Forrest Griffin 120
Shogun -150
Which means that in the odds maker eyes Griffin has as good as a chance at pulling off an upset as Dan Henderson does.
That is ridiculous and I plan on getting rich quick wit some heavy betting action on shogun!

Joe is one tough cat…a broken jaw is very uncomfortable. No wonder he sounded funny at the post fight interview with Joe Rogaine I mean Rogan.

I would like to know what sportsbook is offering those odds. The one I’m using has it as Shogun -450 Forrest 300. If you know a place that is offering Shogun at -150 please let me know so that I can wager my house and first born son on it. I love Forrest but come on -150 vs Shogun would be rediculous he’s a far greater underdog than that. I’m guessing you misread it but if not please let me know where you saw that.

Maybe having a broken (jaw/nose) is reason enough for what I felt it to be a good performance but not a great one!! He said before the fight if he has a clear decisive win, an impressive victory then he should get a title shot! I didnt think he accomplished this but now hearing he may have been injured I will give him some credit. Good win Joe. I still think he loses to Penn!

The way Joe Daddy was talking after the fight it sounded like he broke his jaw, but there is usually blood pouring out of a person’s mouth if they break thier jaw, so I don’t know what to think.

haha im not saying i don’t like him, im saying that particular comment was so cliche lame and made me laugh. It’s all good though, thats what he is there for, he does a fine job as color commentator.

Rob, have you ever watched any other MMA on tv besides UFC? Goldberg really is as bad as it gets, except for Jay Glazier. Honestly, I would rather have Bill Goldberg over Mike. I wish the UFC could get Bas Rutten to announce for them. And also Frank Mir is great at commentating at the WEC. I thought the comment about Mir getting hit by another bus so he can take Goldy’s job was funny, true, and messed up all rolled into one.
But the problem is that all the people above are the ‘play-by-play’/analysts, and Goldy is the color commentator. Seriously though, every event he says something so retardedly stupid that he deserves to be replaced.

I have heard all the best commentators, Ranallo, Bas, Quadros, there are a lot of good ones, but not a one can get me laughing like Goldberg.
Seriously, for pure comedic reasoning, I want Goldberg to stay. His quotes are second to none as far as hillariousness goes, plus his over-active hand motions kill me.
You can “Jihad to that brother” (fist pumping) “In the octogon”

This is what happens when you have a bunch of TUF nuthuggers. If Fedor comes over and fights a TUF guy, the odds could very well be even lol.
