UFC Quick Quote Battle: Roger Huerta vs. Alberto Crane at UFC 74
"I'd be stupid to say I'm going to go on the ground with a black belt in jiu-jitsu guy like that. This is MMA, it's mixed martial arts, so I'm going to go in there and do what MMA is about which is to bang. If it goes to the ground, it goes to the ground. If it's standing, it's standing. So basically it's wherever the fight takes, I'll go and that's where we'll end up."
-- Roger Huerta talks UFC 74 fight with Alberto Crane via MMAWeekly.com
"I think he's a real tough guy. He has great stamina. He's aggressive. I think there's a lot of holes in his game though and I want to take advantage of that. That's just my opinion.... You can expect an awesome, dynamic, crazy fight. Don't miss it."
-- Roger Huerta and Alberto Crane discuss their lightweight bout at UFC 74: "Respect" on August 25 in two separate articles. This will be the first fight for Crane inside the Octagon -- check out the article for some more background on the Brazilian jiu-jitsu stylist.

Does anyone know anything about Alberto Crane? Is there any reason to think he could challenge Huerta? Or is this another easy win in the making?

He’ll win reminds me of Fitch taking on that carneiro guy, and then we never hear of the guy again, way to pad records

I just checked him out on Sherdog and they guy hasnt fought since the begining of 2005 so I suspect Roger to be able to pull off a win. Ring rust we be his down fall.

I like Huerta…I hope to see him challenge some of the top talent after this
by Stafo on Aug 19, 2007 10:24 PM EDT reply actions
Huerta will smash this guy. That’s my prediction. For those bashing Bisping, the UFC is doing the same thing with Roger albeit Huerta is a little nearer the top of the food chain in his division and he probably poses a bigger threat to the top dogs than Michael currently does in his division. Still bear it in mind. Just a warning on double standards all though I realise many of you guys have pointed out the lack of names Roger is competing against.
Huerta is one of my favs btw.

Wow Huerta stepping up to the plate to take on his 5th First time UFC fighter in a row? or is it 4th?
Guys the gatekeeper at 155, start fighting people ranked in the top 300 and maybe people will start taking you more seriously.
by DirtyML on Aug 20, 2007 3:12 AM EDT reply actions
Before he’s given a title shot, he will have to pass the other gatekeepers (the Top 5 LWs). So even though Huerta is being fed fish now, he’ll eventually have his time.
Huerta winning = fans south of the border = UFC happy
by LUKE on Aug 20, 2007 4:27 AM EDT reply actions
Dont worry guys. Eventually Huerta will have to face BJ Penn, Ken-flo, or Daddy. His first loss will be to one of them. I think even Melvin could have smashed Huerta.

Crane looks to have good BJJ, but will this fight be like??
Huerta has a more in his arsenal to win in this match up. I see Huerta winning TKO first round. Crane has BJJ but you have to be in a good position to use it. I don’t see Huerta given him his back or maken any dumb mistakes on the ground.

I don’t mind that Heurta is being thrown cans, I just mind having to watch it on PPV when clearly the Guida fight is potentially much more exciting and meaningful than Huerta’s. The UFC can work their Mexican golden boy up to 1000-0 for all I care, just dont ask us to pay to see it please.

Who else thinks this is a given win for Roger?
Oh….let’s see, that makes everyone!!!

I think its time that Dana lets go of the leash around huerta’s neck. Honestly, I think that Huerta is ready for a jump in competition. With Dr. evil (dana white) trying to take over the world, huerta is important for the UFC’s mexican expansion as Bisping is to england. Bisping fights in a tough crowded LHW division, Huerta on the other hand fights in the weak LW division, and I believe that he is ready to take on higher level guys. I think joe stevenson vs. Huerta would be a great fight. I dont c daddy walking through huerta easily. Huerta would have been a much more formidable opponent for daddy then pelligrino will be.
Huerta is very important for UFC, but I think he is ready to start fighting some real opponents. I think huerta can compete with Daddy n maybe even ken – flo. Just not BJ Penn.
I hope Huerta has been working wit Jeremey Horn, because his submission game needs more work, because he is already a superior striker at LW
by john on Aug 20, 2007 9:19 AM EDT reply actions
Huerta vs: BJ Penn, BJ Lauzon, Nate Diaz, Gomi, Gurgel, Din Thomas, Josh Neer, Clay Guida, Joe Stevenson, KenFlo, Luke Cummo, Sam Stout, Spencer Fisher, Frank Edgar, Tyson Griffen are all more interesting fights to see. I understand why the fight they have was chosen. And also why none of the fights listed above will happen or already already occured. I just think these are more exciting.

Since coming to the UFC, Huerta has fought nothing but UFC newcomers. This will make his 5th in a row. After this many, I’m really starting to wonder if Roger has any sort of influence over these decisions. I mean, in a post fight interview, if he were to call someone out, or just say that he is ready to step up against the top 5, I think that he will be given the opportunity. I mean Hermes Franca got on his knees and got a title shot.

Did you watch the evans fight, talk about giving up your back and being in all kinds of stupid positions. Evans a mulitple state champion in wrestling just didn’t have the submissions to close. Huerta had no puching power and got lucky8 to be able to finish the fight ( very unimpressive finish ) The UFC must have paid Evans not to fight in that second round after shitting themselves at the close of the first round. Huerta is not going to be able to win against crane his usual crap just isn’t going to work..

Roger Huerta is an excellent fighter, but who are you to say Alberto Crane is not a liable opponent, Alberto Crane is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt who’s has been training Jiu-Jitsu for 12 years and has trained at the world famous Gracie Barra academy in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Alberto is a former world Jiu-Jitsu champion as well as the former “King Of The Cage” lightweight champion. Jiu-Jitsu: 2002 World Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Champion (Mundials), 3 time Brazilian National Jiu-Jitsu Champion, 99 Silver World Championship medalist (Mundials), 98 Bronze World Championship medalist (Mundials) Submission Wrestling: Grapplers Quest Champion, Pan American Champion, 2 time Best of the West Champion, Abu Dhabi Veteran.

Excellent point. I get tired of irresponsible blanket statements being posted by people. It is great to have an opinion, as long as you have knowlege on BOTH the fighters. You can’t write off a fighter if you haven’t seen them fight. These are the same people who didn’t give Gonzaga a chance. Every fighter who steps in the ring has the ability to win. I am a Huerta fan and hope he pulls it off, but this is going to be a very difficult fight for him, because Crane is a much more technical fighter than anyone he has faced before
by FFL on Aug 20, 2007 12:18 PM EDT reply actions
IMO: after watching both fighters move in a MMA styled bout I think Crane will submit Huerta in the first or in the second round. If Roger opens himself up like he did in the evans fight this won’t last very long. Having said that if we see a new polished Huerta with no holes in his movements, then it could be hard for Crane to get the stronger man down and to sleep. Huerta though probably will not be able to stop the takedown and will be surprised along with mma fans at Crane’s good standup as well. He will just attempt to flurry exposing weakness then he will literally have a unshakable monkey on his back.NIght Night roger

Huerta has a busy aggressive style, but his game is mediocre. He doesn’t have KO power and gives up position too often. He needs this competition to look dominate.
The Garcia fight was exciting, one sided for Huerta, but he couldn’t finish. Evans was a 1st timer too and that fight was competitive.

Personally, I’d rather have Marcus Aurelio vs. Clay Guida as a main card fight and have this one in the pre-lims. I know, I know, Heurta is a UFC poster-boy, SI cover, etc. Let’s be honest though, the Guida / Aurelio fight is where it’s at.

Huerta is -400 (like he always is)
Crane is 300
Laying a couple hundred on crane seems to tough to pass up on.
If huerta hasnt been spending all of his time wit Jeremy Horn the Huerta could be in for a rude awakening. All that not fighting for position, and giving up his back is not gonna work against crane.
bet $200 on crane, if u win u can purchase UFC tickets wit the winnings. What could be better then free tickets to a UFC event, by risking 200 bucks on the underdog. UFC has been the year of the underdog!

U might be right, hey bet a measily 2 hundred on crane if he looses so what, if he wins $600 can get u tickets to a UFC event.
I will consider betting crane, I would never dream of bettin on huerta in this fight.
Bet $100 on huerta and he looses, which is a possibility, u would loose $400. I would never bet that cuz I smell an upset brewing
