UFC Quick Quote: One too many pina coladas for St. Pierre?

"He didn't train as much as he should, because he was too busy doing other things than training and fighting. He won the title, he's a kid, he was 25 years old. Let's just say he partied a little bit too much."
-- Stephane Patry, the former manager for one-time UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre, claims in the Canadian Press that "Rush" was busy partying rather than training for his first title defense against Matt Serra at UFC 69, which he lost in the first round via technical knockout. St. Pierre has a different take on the matter, revealing that his father was suffering from a brain ailment and his young cousin was in a coma. Regardless, St. Pierre claims that one thing is certain for his upcoming fight with Josh Koscheck at UFC 74: "Respect" on August 25: he is ready to make an excuse-free statement when the two meet in Las Vegas. And maybe then he can kick-back a few Pina Coladas.

Excuses..Excuses..Excuses! He better show up against Kos. I think he’s got the skills to be one of the best ever in the division but two losses in a row will not work out

We all knew something was fishy wth St. Pierre when he kept telling everyone how hard he was training for the Serra fight, Aren’t you always supposed to train that hard Georges? He definitely let the limelight get to him. I think he will outclass koschek, and probably regain the title again. Hopefully this isn’t a situation when an athlete is his own worst enemy.

This is irrelevant…what matters is that GSP is going to tear Kos limb from limb and knock his head clean off Mortal Kombat style.

I’m glad that the fight is less than two weeks away. After that we’ll be talking about when he will get a title shot. Or will we be talking about how stupid the UFC is for cooling off this division by having a 7 or 8 month lag between title fights…That was complete idiocy.

GSP is gonna go into this one well trained i have no doubt in that. But GSP has so much raw talent that easing off training a little bit probably wouldnt hurt his game to much except for maybe the stamina. Kos can only hope to clip GSP with a punch and pray. You cant really train to not get effected by a punch in the face. If Kos wants any chance of winning he has to step up his fight game about 110% cuz if he puts on a showing like all his other fights he’s gonna get handled.

Iam a huge GSP fan, and no doubt his expressions after the fight come off real fishy. What is the most strange part is why has nobody ever watched the fight over again. He was doing fine until he gets caught in the back of the head while sliping Serra’s punch. Than twice again in the back of the head after his leg gave out near the cage. Its a loss but seeing as how punches to the back of the head are illegal standing or on the ground. Why he needed excusses is a mystery to me….

I believe this 100%. However, no matter how much he trained, he should have beat Serra. GSP almost has to come back and flat out dominate, at the cost of his reputation.
by Matt on Aug 14, 2007 1:31 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I keep reading that Kos can only hope to get lucky and catch GSP. I guess I would have to agree, but we must also note that, while Serra did catch GSP with a punch on the back of his head, not too many other fighters are even able to reach GSP. He uses his range very well, and uses his jab so effectively. Kos is not gonna just be able to swing away and pray. If he starts swinging he’s gonna catch nothing but air, as GSP has just backed out of his range. And while his hands are being thrown, his face will be vulnerable. GSP should catch Kos, with either a punch or one of his beautiful head kicks. In the end, just look for GSP to pick Kos apart.

Just more and more excuses. Im pretty sure that i recall GSP saying that everyone thinks matts and underdog but hes going to train his ass off to be 100% because he doesnt take any fighter for granted. Besides a couple nights of drinking is not going to cancel out months of training. I love GSP but he got knocked the fuck out by a man with a bigger heart so JUST FUCKIN ADMIT IT!!!

I believe it is bullsh!t to throw up a bunch of excuses after a fight.
Before his fight with Sera if they asked him how has his training been coming along and he said “well you know- I am out partying a lot and getting laid so many times. I don’t have much energy for ze training”, that’s fine. That’s full disclosure. However I don’t recall him saying anything negative before the fight. Nothing about brain tumors or taking it easy or injuries two weeks before.
George, leave the excuse making to Tito Ortiz. Go out and stomp the merde out of Koscheck!

GSP needs to admit that he just got caught. No one thinks that Serra, or anyone else in that division, is as talented a fighter as he is. Once he gets back in there, I see him going right back to dominating everyone in the division.

I agree that GSP has skills. The way he manhandled Frank Trigg on the ground is as
good a top-control training video as any. The man is just a loose cannon when it comes to being out of the Octogan. He’s on a downward spiral with the likes of many
celebrities. Hopefully someone brought him back down to reality.

Kos looked “competent” against Sanchez, I’ve yet to see him pull of a win nearly as impressive as GSP’s over Matt Hughes. And lets face it Matt (at that time) was the ultimate competition for any welterweight. Kos made short work of Goulet, but he’s not really in the same league…

Didnt GSP also fight with 1 hand behind his back? I thought that was in the contract too. Also, if Serra got tired he was allowed to tag his partner to jump over the cage to replace him. It was a tag team match against GSP.

If GSP does lose to Kos, I can’t wait to hear all of his excuses this time. He clearly got caught by a couple of punches behind the ear. He didn’t need to make excuses. But still he and everyone around him does, and still do.
I have never been a big GSP fan (of course I respect his well rounded talent, and he is a beast at 170), and I have hated KOS ever since TUF season 1. I must say, that I don’t hate him quite as much now, but I am no where near liking him. So in the upcoming fight, I will be rooting for a couple of outcomes. I would love to see KOS get absolutely man handled and beaten down like a little blonde curly haired step daughter in the first round. BUT, once the fight passes the first round, I will be rooting for KOS. If GSP can’t finish KOS in the first round, I don’t think he deserves an immediate title shot. So, in the first round, I want to see either one of them get destroyed and KTFO very badly in the first round, otherwise I root for KOS. The last thing I want to see is a boring chess match between these two that result in a 29-28 GSP decision.

GSP will beat Koscheck on Aug 25th and Hughes will beat Serra in December. We’ll then see GSP/Hughes 3 for the title (in Montreal hopefully!) and everything will be back to normal (as long as there are no staph infections) when St. Pierre takes the belt in 2008.
Check out Hughes in 2007…Beats Lytle (in a boring decision) and then gets rewarded with ample farm time, a tv show (which will give him another ride, more exposure for rookie fans, along with loads more WWE style hype vs. Serra) and a title shot vs Serra. All of this as a reward for getting crushed by St.Pierre. I just don’t understand it. The dude couldn’t even finish Lytle and he gets a title shot and tv show out of that?

I wouldn’t doubt that St Pierre partied a bit more than usual. He got a nice fat contract after his win over Hughes, so you know he got paid bank and probably lived like a rockstar. We were not privy to how much he made for his fight vs Serra because Texas does not disclose fighter salaries. Obviously, that salary will be much lower than what he actually got paid, but, i wouldn’t doubt if he was getting Matt Hughes money now (in a recent interview he said “not even close” when asked if he had $300k a year.)
So it’ll be interesting to see his disclosed salary vs Koscheck

ViolentMike, if GSP doesn’t finish Kos in the first round then he doesn’t deserve an immediate title shot?? Matt Hughes took Chris Lytle to a decision and got an immediate title shot. Lets say GSP beats KOS by TKO in the 2nd or 3rd, or lets even say he wins a decision. Hell, lets even say he wins a split decision. Then who do you have fighting the winner of Hughes and Serra?? Koscheck?? Karo? Diego? The winner of this fight must get the title shot…..regardless. Any doubts that anyone has against GSP….they’re hilarious. The guy has swept up this entire division, and one loss later, he gets hated on. 10 years from now, when GSP is one of the most dominant fighters this world has ever seen, just remember that you were one that always doubted him……just remember that.

Cory, Canadian?
“If GSP doesn’t finish Kos in the first round then he doesn’t deserve an immediate title shot??”
Correct, in my eyes, GSP should completely destroy KOS – in the first round. KOS sucks. He hasn’t fought anyone with a name, other than a hepatitis C, staff infected, dirty Sanchez. So that clearly doesn’t count. So if GSP doesn’t finish KOS convingly, then IN MY EYES, he DOES NOT DESERVE a title shot.
Who else derserves a title shot? I am not a fan of Karo Parysian cuz he’s a complete dick, but he truely does deserve a title shot as well. He had a title shot against Hughes, but had to back out due to injury. He’s probably not the best example here, since he hasn’t finished a fight since he was 17 years old, but still – not many, if any, would complain if Karo was to soon get a title shot.
Also, Jon Fitch is 6-0 in the UFC. Name me another WW, or anyone in the UFC, that can say the same. So with a win over a healthy Diego, why not a title shot?
P.S. Do I think Hughes DESERVES his title shot after his performance against Lytle – no way. But that’s besides the point.

Clipped??? i dont remember Koscheck (notice the one “S” in his name) winning that fight by KO. oh thats right he didnt it went to a decision. Koscheck is lucky he pulled out that fight against Diego it put him up about 5 pegs above where he should really be. So he has no choice but to step his game up but alas he is still gonna get F*ckin devoured by the best in the Division. Sorry its gonna take alot more than a decision win over a sick Diego to sway me even close to believing Kos is top5. And yeah all the Kos fans or Diego haters say excuses excuses what the f*ck ever. Every source says he was sick he was f*cking sick get it got it good. Wether that played a huge role in the fight with Kos no one knows. But from seeing all of Diego’s previous fights and then watching this fight its pretty clear Diego’s game was off. And from the way Diego was fighting Kos should have annihilated him. But he went to a dec with a sick Diego there isnt alot of clout in that i dont care what anyone says. He beat Diego fair and square i know i get that and Diego fans and Diego Haters could argue the point till the end of time and get nowhere.Thats what is propelling people to think Kos is top5 gimmie a break. GSP will win this fight. Even if he loses, I will still always be a fan of his. Even if he loses after this fight and ends up with TKO in Montreal again, still doesn’t matter. I will always be a true fan of his and what he brings to the fight game.
A Canadian going to UFC 74 to support GSP and his first step back to the top.
Win or loose we are all behind Canadian GSP, eh?

I hope GSP teaches him a proper MMA lesson. Hughes loses and gets Lytle, GSP loses and gets Koschek. You can tell who bends over and touches there toes for Dana.

I will not deny Gsp’s talant hes a badass but im tired of his bs excuses, Matt serra walked trough him, It was matts night. stop crying, be a man, learn and come back. As much as i cant stand kos, if Gsp goes in that fight as nervous as he did in the serra fight, homeboys going to have a long night!

Bloodymess doesnt have a clue and is obviously a UFC nub.
Watch his highlights little fella, see how you are supposed to fight in mma.
Nope been watching for awhile, GSP is overrated and thats a fact. just ask anyone who lost a ton of money in vegas in april. And then go talk to a therapist because you have obsessive psychosis if you cant see the truth that he is just another guy. I’m sure Croation guys are having the same little meltdown that all you canadian fans are going through since Cro Cop got introduced to reality…

So you are saying that you thinkg that KOS is levels above Chris Lytle? I’d have to argue with you there. As a matter of fact, I would say that you have it backwards. I think Chris Lytle is a much better MMA fighter than KOS. If Lytle was in there with Diego instead of KOS, Lytle would have KO’d him for sure (considering the health of Diego).

I don’t necessarily disagree with you ViolentMike. Thats arguably true. However….BloodyMess, saying GSP is overrated is like saying Tim Sylvia is underrated….lol.

GSP = mike tyson..totally agree. He’s a badass until someone stands up to him. Once the going gets rough he folds (Serra). (Like he wanted to against BJ after being dominated in round1)
The truth is, even you GSP hardcore fans are admitting it by saying stuff like “It depends which george shows up!” So reminiscent of people saying “If the real mike tyson, the one that knocked out sphinx shows up he’d ko everyone!” Sad, but true. Talented, but a basket case. Sure, he might win, but I don’t think so. Kos is no pushover, and I guarentee he won’t give up just cause he’s fighting St.pierre..although I think Pierre might melt if kos frusterates him. :)

Thanks for noticing, it felt like I was the only one who saw the fight. I am sure that Serra did not plan those punches to land there ( in fact if you look at the fight he did’nt plan a specific landing for any of his punches.)But accidental or not those punches did clearly land on the back of the head.
