Report: Staph infection sidelines UFCs Drew McFedries for six to eight months

Rising middleweight talent Drew McFedries will be out for six to eight months because of a severe staph infection on the back of his leg that required recent surgery, according to MMAonTap.com.
Here's the snip:
"McFedries got hit the worst, suffering from an infection which grew to the size of a football on the back of his leg. The infection required surgery and McFedries had a good amount of skin removed from the back his leg which will now require graphs."
Yikes.
Last week we passed along news that two other UFC fighters from the Miletich camp in addition to McFedries were infected with the skin-eating bacteria -- former heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia and lightweight Spencer Fisher. In fact, Fisher had to withdraw from his main event fight with Din Thomas at UFC Fight Night 11 on September 19.
Based on this report, the earliest McFedries can return to action would be early in 2008. That's a tough blow for the 185-pound prospect who was looking to ride the momentum of a devastating first round knockout of Jordan Radev at UFC Fight Night 10 back in June.
He has two other appearances inside the Octagon -- a technical knockout win over Alessio Sakara and a submission loss to Martin Kampmann.
McFedries was penciled in to appear at UFC 77 on October 20 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Clearly, he will not be ready in time for that event.
Naturally, we'll keep you posted on the recovery of McFedries and any match ups that emerge for him in the relatively distant future.

MRSA is no fucking joke! It kills more people than AIDS and lives on everyone. You can get it from dirty mats or just picking your nose…gross I know but the MRSA lives in your nostrils mainly. I got so paranoid I went out and bought a product call Skinsan. This is no spam but the shit is really good but expensive because of the shipping from overseas. Anyways, hopefully the guys get over it and don’t spread it.
Here is the link to the blog where I found the wash:

I wish the camps could somehow get fined for an outbreak of staph. This is ridiculous all these scheduled bouts getting cancelled! The fighters would have to sue their own camps for damages and lost wages I suppose. That’s the only way to force them to clean the mats.

Is this an epidemic?? Like all these fighters from different camps are coming down with these nasty types of staph/skin infections..if this keeps happening I see MMA fighters fighting with those whole body suits like da 1’s speed ice skaters use…Gym owners get the cleaning products on the market..wipe those mats down..and guys after you roll..SHOWER ASAP!!!

How unfortuante. Hopefully we see the three fine athletes from Miletich back in the octagon soon. Hopefully they recover and get back to their winning ways.

This is getting pretty out of hand, for the love of god hire a f-ing janitor to throw bleach on the mats, and follow it up with a great mop job. It can’t possibly be that hard to protect oneself. Filthy ass heathens.

I remember in high school either the trainer or some designated scrote would be mopping the mats an hour before practice or events. I thought it was really unnecessary at the time but no wrestler ever got a staph infection. If I see the guy at my 30th reunion maybe I’ll give him a gift certificate to Hooters or something.

Its hard to understand how things like Staph and Plantars grows… Throughout the years of Wrestling and Jujitsu, I’ve seen alot, thank god I only got Plantars one time on each foot. Really shitty part of mat fighting, but oh well.
Im not questioning how clean the mats are, you can pick that shit up just about anywhere

I say its Karma that McFedries had that surgery, he should’nt have thrown that last punch on his already unconscious opponent in his last bout. Tough lesson, now lets hope he learned something

This is getting totally out of hand. This is just more proof the the UFC does not pay its fighters enough money, since they obviously can’t even afford a bottle of bleach and a freaking janitor. How hard is it to pay some 16 year old kid, or some 30 year old immigrant minimum wage to hand around the gym and wash the matts every couple hours.
If a fighter gets staff from working out at a gym, it should be mandatory for the owner of the gym to roll around on the same gym matts completely butt naked and ‘stop-drop-and-roll’

Wow, leave it to you to say something negative about a guy who’s forced to sit on the sidelines for a half of a year b/c of an uncontrollable disease. I’m sure Radev realized the circumstances and reason for that punch. Why can’t you?

Lmao, It sounds like they didnt clean it for a week. That’s would have so much bacteria crawling around on it, you would have a better chance of just having a port-o-potty dumped on you and not get sick.

This is getting ridiculous now.
- Wash your mats
- Take a shower before and after training
- Towel off during breaks
- Wear a rash guard
It’s not that hard.

If this league was more organized, there would be standards set in place that would prevent sh*t like this from happening. There needs to be a player’s union, protecting them from being underpayed and training in dirty ass conditions. I imagine that Dana White has to be concerned about the disturbing prevalence of this. How many fights is he going to have to alter before he steps up and says something publicly to these gyms?

It isn’t that easy. It can be transferred from person to person and bam it is all over.

Isn’t Miletich supposed to be one of the best camps? You think they’d hire a mop boy. Water bleach Bucket Mop. Not that hard. Maybe we should take up a collection to send them a gallon of bleach a mop and a bucket. Pat can mop up before and after.

Yeah… all these guys getting staph… or maybe they are juicing and don’t expect it to be out of their systems in time. Staph would be an easy out.

..Maybe due to Matt Hughes being the offical MopBoy @ Miletich..now he’s filming da TUF new season..there is no1 there to keep things Fresa.

Jim i agree but i dont think the rest of them get it. People its not as easy as just mopping the mats all the time. Its also spread from person to person through contact or items. Im sure at Miletich they clean the mats regularly. You dont know how these guys got it so your just speculating. Maybe it was transferred from person to person and not from each fighter rolling on the same mat or maybe it was i dunno but. You would literally have to sanitize the mat after every person rolled on it or came into contact with it to make sure its sanitized. Let alone if your rolling and training on the mat with someone who has an outbreak and they dont know it and you dont know it. showers help but if you have it you have it and a shower aint washing it off. All good precautions listed by Pat deff dont get me wrong. Im just saying you guys act like duh its easy mop the mats bingo bango no more staph problems when in reality that may help but far from eliminates the possiblity of getting it.

Its got nothing to do with how well the UFC pays fighters. Miletech makes STUPID $$ from fighters, IFL, organizations, fights… you name it. So cork that stupid BS. The mats ARE getting cleaned…
Secondly, dirty mats can help increase transfer, however you could have a totaly clean training area and still transfer many skin diseases…. remember last year the Cleveland Browns had a large outbreak, even after the constant cleaning.

I doubt he is going to connect a staph infection to the serious ass whipping he laid down that night. At least not if he is sane…

I agree – if somebody has it, whether they got it at Militech or (probably) from somewhere else, there is almost nothing you can to do to prevent him from spreading it to others if you don’t know he has it. I really can’t believe how unsensible people can be.

Sorry if I was misunderstood. When I said “It’s not that hard”, I didn’t mean it’s not that hard to prevent it, but that the pre-cautions I listed are not hard to do. Of course there’s no way to completely protect yourself, but there are simple ways to reduce the chances. It’s like leaving your door open and then wondering why you got robbed. There’s no way to ensure you don’t get robbed, but it’s the least you can do to lock your door lol. I hope that made things more clear.

I think that you are taking the mat cleaning comments too literally. Ya think that Miletich has guys that clean mats? YUP!! High School’s have guys that clean the mats so I’d guess that one of the top MMA camps would have ’em too.
The point is that this recent outbreak of Staph is CRAZY! It’s almost like saying that the NE Patriots Starting Lineup is out because of an outbreak of foot fungus or strepp throat. These guys are pros and you’d think that the training and medical staff could figure out how to deal with a staph infection before it got to the size of a football.
I guess mostly I’m pissed that because of something as stupid as staph, serious as it may be to McFedries, is going to prevent ME the fan from seeing him whoop some ass.

Miletich runs one of the greatest camps in the world. This can be picked up anywhere. It is terribly unlucky. Im sure he works with all his fighters on how to take care of themselves and how he takes care of his equipment. Hope Drew can get back as soon as possible. He is moving up the ladder fast. A very exciting and talented fighter.
