UFC Quick Quote: Evan Tanner 'not under contract'

evantanner.jpg

"Evan Tanner is not under contract to UFC nor are there any matches scheduled for him at this point."

-- Dave Meltzer from WrestlingObserver.com squashes rumors and reports that former UFC middleweight champion Evan Tanner will return to the Octagon in September. In fact, he isn't even under contract, making an appearance in the near future (September) highly unlikely.

this is crap. No way I’m ordering UFC 76 anymore. Evan Tanner was the only decent guy on the card and now that he’s not on I’m not interested in watching it anymore.

Don’t mean to nitpick, but it’s Dave Meltzer, not Mike.

Ha, I grew up with a Mike Meltzer. Thanks … nitpicking warranted.

That’s bullshit that the ufc doesn’t have tanner. They always say that they have all of the best fighters now. They might have a lot of good fighters but they don’t have them all. They don’t even have the best fighter in the world. How can you be the biggest and best MMA organization and not have the best fighter in the world. The UFC not having fedor is like the NBA without jordan. You defenitly have the funds dana, what’s the hold up?!

I just saw Evan at a Rage in the Cage event in PHX (3 weeks ago) and he was about 10 beers into the night and looked like he weighed about 150. He looked way too thin for a guy who was training and he said he wasn’t training at all right now. No way he was ever seriously considering this fight. He was too drunk that night to barely stand up…

I hope that GSP4Prez is joking:

Chuck Liddell
Keith Jardine
Mauricio “Shogun” Rua
Forrest Griffin
Diego Sanchez
Jon Fitch
Lyoto Machida
Tyson Griffin
Thiago Tavares

This card is sick.

Whatever you guys, Fedor’s people have already said that the UFC has offered more than any other org. So quit it already. And c’mon, Evan Tanner is NOT all that, he would always be like Tito, A good fighter, like a gateway, but never an actual contendar for the title.

They run the UFC like a ma and pa shop. If they dont like a fighter or they get into an argument, the UFC just shuts that fighter out. Its bullshit. Ex. Dana white & Tito Ortiz, Frank Shamrock, now even Ken Shamrock, Nick Diaz, Matt Lindland, Josh Barnett and its goes on and on

What r u talkin about not a contender! the guy help the 185 belt, givin the division wasn’t that dep but he still held the title. i wish tanner would make a comeback, hes always been an exciting fighter wit tons of heart

Evan Tanner may not be an immediate contender but will be in a few fights. Something else that he definetly is a fan favorite as you can tell just in this thread. Many fans like to watch him fight.

Back in the day sure, just like Ortiz, just further proving my comparison of him to Ortiz. Were you trying to prove me right?

I bought tickets to that fight just for Tanner!

I can’t believe UFC didn’t lock him up!

Tito was a contender in his second last fight…
I mean come on, it wasn’t that long ago.

If he beats Rashad in the rematch and either takes out another potential contender then there’s no reason he can’t be a contender again. Especially now that Chuck isn’t champion.

Apart from a lame cut TKO from Loiseau (despite tooling Loiseau up to that point), Tanner’s only losses recently have been to Rich Franklin (who despite his recent annihilation by Anderson Silva, is no slouch). Btw, I believe he was a contender for the title in that match.

I’m not denying that Tanner and Ortiz have similarities. I’m just stating that you’re underrating the impact of both of them on their division. Whilst neither are dominating their competition, they have as good a chance as anyone else to getting to contender status.

by ShatteredDreams on Aug 8, 2007 6:33 AM EDT reply actions

The rumors on this board really get out of hand. I was eager to see Tanner return and fight anyone really. First one of Tanner’s coaches at Sh1tbox USA issues a statement that Tanner WILL be fighting in Sept in a UFC event against an unnamed opponent. I hope they were at least in contract negotiations at the time and the coach felt a deal would be very likely. Secondly Marvin Eastman separately says he will fight again this fall- possibly against Tanner- but he doesn’t know.

article: “UFC 76- Tanner vs. Eastman”

That is a stitched together Frankenstein of facts headline. The two were never slated to fight each other for any specific event. Eastman didn’t know who he would be fighting or at which event when he was quoted.

I’d like to see a little BS meter icon next to each story title. It could look like a thermometer. This particular story would be maxed out with the BS all the way to the top.

And Tito KO’d Tanner in like under a minute when they fought with a body lock and slam.

I think Evan Tanner could make a comback absolutely and possibly hold the belt. I dont know why you think he has no chance. I think if he could get by Rick Franklin he could give Anderson Silva a run for his money. This is all IF (and thats a big if), IF he can focus and get back into his routine.

He did come back to destroy Justin Levens and that was just over a year ago only. I know Levens blows but my point is, its not like hes been gone for years and years and years.

by DJPullout on Aug 8, 2007 7:32 AM EDT reply actions

Strange, I thought a quote from Joe Silva several months ago said that Tanner had one fight left on his contract after the Levens match and was welcome back at any time. I’d be really disappointed if this rumor is true. I have to agree that Tanner would be more of a gateway than a contender, but I still really enjoy watching him fight and want him back in the UFC. Hopefully, if he’s not under contract and scheduled for a fight, he will be soon.

I agree that stylistically he could potentially give Franklin a run for his money, I still think Franklin would decimate him. However, I don’t think he stands a chance against Silva. Silva would pick him apart, and most likely knock him out in the first round. Silva doesn’t rely on his BJJ, but it’s definitely there, and he is very good on the ground. Silva is just way to much for Tanner to handle.

I agree, the only person in the middle weight division that stands a chance against Silva is Franklin, and we all know what happened to him last time. Tanner may be able to get top contender again, but as long as Silva is in town, he will not see that belt.

Mama’s: Did you see the “?” in the headline?

And if your read that entire post, it’s written as if it “could possibly happen” not that it WAS happening. There’s a big difference. Rumors unfortunately don’t pan out. But if we waited until the UFC confirmed everything, we wouldn’t have much to talk about. And, last thing, Mania was one of the few sites who didn’t push Tanner in September despite the ChuteBoxe statement. In fact, we didn’t even put him on our schedule until Eastman was moved to 76.

Franklin has already beaten Tanner twice. With those two losses and dropping one to Loiseau, I can’t see Tanner getting past Anderson Silva. But MMAth doesn’t always work out.

This is simply not true. Both Dana White and Evan Tanner himself have said that Evan still has one fight left on his UFC contract.

Wow, I can’t believe people are still saying that talking about that BS win over Tanner. I thought everyone knew by now that the KO came from Tito’s 70 pound head slamming full force into Tanner’s chin. Come on man, keep up on past and current events.

Good point. Dana isnt as professional as he could be. It isnt fair to the fans to not have great fighters in the organization because of personal crap between them and Dana.
Dana u egomaniac, U wanna be the man in the MMA world……….. Get everysingle last top 10 fighter in everydivision. Kiss and make up wit Diaz, Lindland, Barnett!
People will pay to c them, not u!

he wont be the champ again, he will just be a gatekeeper, and a stepping stone…..all the top guys that are gpnna go up for the title will fight him or rich for the #1 contender,,,,,,i think guys like nate marquardt,A.silva, even Okami will beat, making him a stepping stone, kind of what rich will become is he looses to A.silva in his next fight

Correct, having a fight left on his contract isn’t the same thing as having a signed contract against an opponent, but that is not what Meltzer is saying. Meltzer is saying that Tanner doesn’t have a current fight contract with the UFC, and that is not true.

by Dr J on Aug 8, 2007 3:17 PM EDT reply actions

A big dissapointment of Tanner not returning. As much fun as it was to see Randy make his comeback, Im interested in seeing what Tanner has to offer now.

Evan Tanner is getting ready for the TNT original movie based on the Battle of Chancellorsville, where he is portraying General Thomas ‘Stonewall’ Jackson. I really miss his cornrows!
