UFC Fight Night 11: Leonard Garcia vs. Cole Miller

leonard garcia cole miller ufc fight night 11
Leonard Garcia (10-2) and Cole Miller (12-2) will tangle in a 155-pound preliminary bout on the UFC Fight Night 11 under card, according to a recent press release from SpikeTV.

Both fighters are coming off first-round wins at The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 5 Finale in June last month. Garcia submitted Allen Berube via rear naked choke and Miller finished Andy Wang with some strikes that were set up with a glancing head kick.

Miller made it to the semifinals of TUF 5, but eventually succumbed to Joe Lauzon after being rattled with an illegal punch to the back of his head. Garcia is perhaps best known for being on the losing side of a three-round war with Roger Huerta at UFC 69.

This match up rounds out the Spike television special, which is set to air on September 19 at 8 p.m. ET and lead into the debut episode of TUF 6.

Here's a look at the current UFC Fight Night 11 fight card:

Main Event:
Din Thomas (20-6) vs. Spencer Fisher (20-3)

Main card (televised):
170 lbs.: Mike Swick (10-2) vs. Jonathan Goulet (19-8)
185 lbs.: Chris Leben (16-4) vs. Terry Martin (16-2)
155 lbs.: Nate Diaz (6-2) vs. Junior Assuncao (5-2)

Under card (May not be broadcast):
170 lbs.: Thiago Alves (11-3) vs. Kuniyoshi Hironaka (11-3)
185 lbs.: Nate Quarry (8-2) vs. Pete Sell (7-3)
155 lbs.: Leonard Garcia (10-2) vs. Cole Miller (12-2)
170 lbs.: Luke Cummo (5-4) vs. Edilberto "Crocota" de Oliveira (8-1-1)
155 lbs.: Gray Maynard (2-0) vs. Joe Veres (4-1)

Not bad. Not bad at all.

i dont understand how you can not broadcast cole miller, hes a very exciting fighter, on the ground he is always throwing submissions, and is very aggressive on his feet.

I don’t understand how Leonard Garcia keeps getting put on the unbroadcast undercard. He gave Roger Huerta (one of the UFC’s poster lightweights) the fight of his career thus far and became an instant fan favorite.

Cole’s shown that he is a fighter worth watching as well, so I hope this is the #1 alternate for being broadcast if time allows.

GO Garcia!

How can u not broadcast leonard garcia… that kid has HEART! He was involved in one of the best fights of the year(huerta). I also like Cole. Its a shame that the UFC doesnt have enough sense to air this fight!

Very solid event…looking forward. I hope Garcia handles this dude. Should be a good fight

I wish we got to see Garcia vs Miller, also, I see that Nate Quarry is finally back.

Nate Quarry, man I thought Rich Franklin literally killed him!

I really want to see the quarry Sell match. This is a solid card.

This is exactly what I have been talking about. The UFC has gotten a little too high on themselves and feel that they have hit the big time. As a result, as fans we suffer. They have a “televised” portion of the card which is only four fights. Why not show them all wtf ?

I for one definitly want to see the rematch between Nate Quarry and Pete “drago” Sell from 2005. Quarry for those of you who dont know has been out since his fight with Rich Franklin (back surgery).

Also a great young guy in Gray Maynard is on the card and I know all of you guys who saw TUF 5 finale wanna see him again.

Dana needs to get off of his high horse !!!!

He is the Dong King of the UFC and just doesnt give a sh1t

I think they could stand to squeeze a couple more fights into the televised part. Namely:

185 lbs.: Nate Quarry (8-2) vs. Pete Sell (7-3)
155 lbs.: Leonard Garcia (10-2) vs. Cole Miller (12-2)

Goulet vs. Swick is an interesting north-south battle: Swick will try to keep it standing and Goulet will try to get it to the ground.

We’ll see how Swick’s takedown defense is at 170.

Exactly I mean 4 fights come on thats basically a total of 13 minutes of fighting if we are lucky because at least one KO and one sunbmission are bound to occur and 1 hour and 47 minutes of promo BS

by Kevin Kelly on Jul 31, 2007 2:35 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

solid solid fight card, at the tuf finale there were 7 out of 9 fights shown so hopefully the ufc continues that with this card, usually if there are 4 fights guaranteed then they show at least 5 and maybe 1 or 2 more depending on how fast the fights go so hopefully there will be some quick stoppages…i know the terry martin/chris leban fight will be over within rd. 1 and nate could get an early sub and swick could get a “quick” (t)ko and that should leave the door open for 2 or 3 other fights, the cole miller/garcia fight will be action packed, i think we’ll see that one anyway, same with gray maynard/joe veres, and then if theres time i think either the cummo fight or the quarry fight will get aired depending on which one ends faster or has more action…

by tha spida on Jul 31, 2007 2:36 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Kevin Kelley how many fights do u want? They have a certain time slot and they are not going to gurantee more fights than they can show. How would u feel if they guranteed all the fights and then u only got to see 4 of them?

Anyways this is the best fight night card ever spencer fisher is never in a boring fight same with chris leben and the hopefully the mike swick of old comes back for this fight.

by matt on Jul 31, 2007 2:37 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I would say you cant really say exactly how many fights will go on. If you are a brand name however and most fight fans know you and you have a following a la Nate Quarry from back in the day or say a Gray Maynard whose last fight ended in such a wierd circumstance, wouldnt you want to see them ? Its just like the PPV cards, showing 5 fights of the 9 and then showing the four pre fights well after all of your excitement has ended with the main event.

So I’d say 5-6 on Spike and 7 out of 9 on PPV’s

exactlly. you know some of these fights aren’t going the distance. namely, leben vs martin. i agree that this is a nice line-up although i would have rather seen leben vs swick and cummo vs alves. i kinda like cummo for some odd reason.

Definitly agree Matt, Spencer Fischer and Sam Stout is my fight of the year and is definitly the top two I have ever saw in terms of UFC fights, with the other one being Forrest Griffen/Stephan Bonnar or maybe Matt Hughes/Frank Trigg

Diego/Karo “crybay/Do you know what I can do to these punks” was pretty exciting also.

But… Spencer Fischer/Sam Stout II was my favoirte, effective punches, great use of the jab and willingness to bang it out

If a c Swick win 1 more fight by guilotin I might kill myself…. Do something else already. I wanna c that striking he displayed in the TUF finals.

Okami chased him out of the division lol

another 3000 bucks for garcia. hope he gets paid on his next contract cause he is getting raped on this one. but he is in the spotlight somewhat.

Because its a Fight Night. They rarely air anything beyond the main card and while I agree with your assessment of Miller as an exciting fighter, not to mention his opponent is as well, I think the fights on the main card are just a little better.

This isnt a PPV situation. This is Spike TV, which airs these things called commercials. While I agree that they put on too much padding, you are definitely exagerating how bad it is. Chances are, one of the main card fights will end early, especially with Terry Martin being on it. This means we will see one of the undercard fights. One that also ends early. Not that bad for a card taht is free.

I agree. I want to see this fight as well. And to be honest, I would switch this fight with the Swick/Goulet fight. I mean, does anyone outside of Goulet’s hometown in Canada actually care about him? I know I sure don’t. And to be quite honest, Mike Swick proved to himself and us fans that he can not even CONTEND with the upper MW’s (which is the least stacked division of the UFC). Swick needs to cut down to WW so he can be an exciting fighter in exciting fights against guys his size.

You throw Garcia and Miller in the octagon, you know you’re going to see an exciting fight.

In general, not knowing the particular fighters, I would always prefer to watch a LW fight rather than a MW fight.

by ViolentMike on Jul 31, 2007 4:04 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

155 pounders way more exciting than the likes of middleweights. Even if your a newcomer a la Doug Evans, your fast and exciting. I mean you can only watch a guy like Ivan Salaverry get knocked out so many times.

by Kevin Kelly on Jul 31, 2007 4:19 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

LOL, Ivan Salaverry. Still to this day, the Salavery/Marquardt fight is one of the worst. Salavery was coming off a few wins, and Marquardt was supposed to be this phenom, and they just looked like a pair of paraplegics trying to dance the Tango.

by ViolentMike on Jul 31, 2007 4:37 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I see Swick and Martin both winning their fights very quickly. Martin is a far better striker then Leben is and Martin has lots of power so he’ll be KOing Leben in Round 1. Same goes for Swick over Goulet. Goulet’s chin is very suspect and he won’t be able to overpower Swick like Okami did.

The fight I most want to see make the main card to fill time is the Alves vs. Hironaka fight. Both are real quality Welterweights and every single fight of Alves’ is guaranteed to be exciting.

The other 2 main card fights Fisher/Thomas and Diaz/Assuncao both potentially could go to a decision. But they should both be really good fights, especially the main event.

by Joe on Jul 31, 2007 4:57 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Salavery/Margurardt…Mike, I was trying to forget that one. I think I fell asleep in the 3rd. And I agree about Goulet and Swick, not excited at all about that one. Cole Miller vs. Garcia will be an outstanding fight. That better make the air. Hopefully Terry Martin will free up some airtime for us and dispose of Leben rather quickly.

by Chachi on Jul 31, 2007 5:05 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Let’s all hope Martin beats Leben quickly so we can see the Miller/Garcia fight. Looks like not a bad card.

by Sask Fred on Jul 31, 2007 5:24 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

This one actually looks pretty good. Cole is super fast with submissions so I think Garcia will be on the “D” the whole time. Maybe heart he has, but a choke is a choke Heart does not work without blood to head.

Looking forward to seeing Swick and Cummo also. If Cummo had a really good ground game to match his standup he’d be the real deal. His striking is silky smooth and it really is a joy to watch.

But urine therapy wtf. It’s sterile and maybe he likes the taste. Hot or cold what d’ya think?

by RobH86 on Jul 31, 2007 5:51 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Why is Leben v Martin on the main card? Why is Leben v Martin on the card at all? Why is Leben in the UFC? Drop this match and you can put Cole Miller or Gray Maynard on the main card.

BTW, Cole by submission, round 1. He’ll make it look easy.

Crocota will go brazilian ape shit on Luke Cummo, Cummo should never be in the UFC to begin with., Nice to see Nate Quarry and Thiago Alves back. Hope Thiago Alves dosen’t test positive again. Because he can go all the way to the top next year. Man this is a better Card than UFC 72 in every form.

by Andrej on Jul 31, 2007 6:47 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

man it pisses me off that they only show 4 fights during ufn and 5 fights during the ppvs! there’s so many good fights and they say that “it’s a treat for the people who actually bought tickets to go” but normally when they do show good fights like these after the main event there’s pretty much nobdy in the crowd!

i was also thinking about that! and if it really helps i need to find out all the facts before doing some stuff like that though!! but anyways i think that cummo does have a good ground game he has good jiu jitsu.

I agree with everysingle one of these comments. Swick is a pussy who used the easiest most boring move imaginable to win half his fights(The guitin, or should I say the swuickatine.. get the fuck outta here…. I hope to never seem him or goulet fight again…. Instead of that gives us maynord, cole vs garcia, cummo fight, alves fight not to mention we should definetly be able to see the Drago – quarry fight….

We gotta all hope that martin knocks leben the F8ck out quickly.

Cummo’s ground game isnt that bad… he uses his ju jitsu for defensive purposes, which is more than a lot of pure strikers do

I don’t think Leben is going to go down as easy as some of as you guys are saying I agree he is going to lose but he is going to go down easy, I think the Swick fight will be short and the Nate Diaz fight might be short.

Important thing to note. Goulet fights at 170. That means that Swick is in fact dropping down to WW for this fight. I am pretty sure that Swick realizes more than anyone how undersized he is for the MW division.

Yeah, I’m not super confident that most of the “fans” in the audience even know what the hell is going on. One of the patrons of this site, whose name I forgot, wrote up an article about the last PPV. In it, he mentioned that most people didnt even know who Big Nog was. I can almost guarantee those fools are the same ones that boo when a fight doesnt turn into a brawl.

Oh shit, thanks Mahde. I didn’t even notice that it was a WW fight. Thats good that Swick dropped down. He looked really skinny as a MW. I hope he doesn’t come out as a WW at the Fight Night with the physique of Kate Moss. Because he’d end up breaking a rib after the first body shot he receives.

Im so sick of the American Audience at the UFC events booing…….booing should be rare, but it happens in many fights. when a fight goes to thr ground and the grappling begins…everyone boo’s…WTF? If u dont wanna c grappling, then watch K-1. Fighters work hard, they are underpaid, and they put their bodys on the line every time they step in the game… As Americans we should watch a pride event and learn some class from the Japanease Audience.

Im from Philly, we r some of the nastiest fans in the world.. We are known for booing Santa Clause! But show some class…and appreciation for the fighters… who continue to go to battle so that we can enjoy the sport we all love.
