UFC Fight Night 11: Gray Maynard vs. Joe Veres

Gray Maynard (2-0) — lightweight semifinalist from The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 5 — will return to the Octagon against UFC newcomer Joe Veres (4-1) at UFC Fight Night 11 on September 19, according to the rumors section of MMAWeekly.com.
In his most recent bout since the conclusion of the reality show, Maynard was involved in a bizarre double tapout-knockout fight with Rob Emerson at the TUF 5 Finale. He claimed he was fine in the post-fight interview when the no contest result was announced, but video replays more or less proved otherwise.
Maynard relied on his strong wrestling skills and ground-and-pound to nearly make it to the TUF 5 lightweight final. But he slipped against Nathan Diaz in the semifinals and that was all the Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist needed to end Maynard's run.
Veres is also an accomplished wrestler, competing on behalf of Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio. There, he was a four-time NCAA Division II National Qualifier and a three-time Division II All-American.
A member of the Team Jorge Gurgel camp, Veres has primarily fought in smaller Midwest promotions such as Courage Fighting Championships and Maximum Combat. He most recently defeated Ray Robinson at Rage in the Cage 91 via technical knockout back in February.
UFC Fight Night 11 takes place on Wednesday, September 19 at The Palms Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. It is the lead in to the sixth installment of TUF, which will air on the Spike television network.

I’m looking forward to seeing Gray fight again. I like his aggressive style and hard slams, well, when he doesn’t knock himself out.

I still say making it a no-contest was stupid. Regardless if he was out, Emerson tapped. (see Hughes v Newton)
Regardless, I look forward to seeing Gray fight again as well. I’m not a big fan of GnP unless it’s fast paced, Tito style. Gray seems to have that fast paced GnP and isn’t afraid to stand. Should be good.

Gray is a great fighter and has an excellent wrestling pedigree but if you look into Joe’s background, he’s also a well decorated wrestler…sounds like these two have similar styles, should be a great fight…

Nice match up I guess—I know nothing about Veres. I’d like to see Gray against another TUF contestant or someone like Garcia. This sounds like a wrestling match.
It doesnt matter because I just checked out the fight card and it looks like the broadcast will be pretty solid:
Din Thomas vs. Spencer Fisher
Thiago Alves vs. Kuniyoshi Hironaka
Mike Swick vs. Jonathan Goulet
Chris Leben vs. Terry Martin
And there’s still 2 more fights left!

The referee made the wrong call in the Newton-Hughes fight. Both guys were out (Hughes from the triangle choke, Newton from the slam), so it should have been ruled a no-contest, just like the Maynard fight, where the ref made the right call.

Your probably looking at the wrong thread… I’m pretty sure you can find lots of Leban bashing on any thread involving Leban.
Just think how different would Matt Hughes title reign have been if that Hughes vs Newton was ruled No contest as it should have been. Newton would have kept the title, and possibly there would have been a rematch right away.

Actually, the ones where he knocks himself out are the most entertaining.
I’m going with Maynard in this one, only because I know he’s got a solid game and know nothing about Veres, other than that he trains with Gurgel.
On that note, how did Gurgel get his own facility? I thought you had to be a star first.

No, you just need the initial start-up capital for a facility and equipment, then you need a group of 6-year-olds to pay for lessons on what to do when someone takes their lunch money, then you scour local shows and convince the top area fighters (Franklin) that you know what the hell you’re talking about so you can piggy-back on their talent.

Im not too crazy about the wrestler vs. wrestler match up. Gray is a banger, however this match would be more appealing if he were fighting someone who we could at least successfully research, I cant find anything on this guy except that he was a DII wrestler. Im a fan of grays, however not too excited about this fight.
Any word on what “Mach” Sakurai was doing at the last pay per view event?
When are we gonna hear whats up wit the Muscle shark situation? August 6th?

A little bit off topic but i was looking at the mmaweekly rankings and they took out sean sherk from the top ten and put in joe stevenson. As soon as i saw that i was like man how could they do that, sean might be innocent. Then i was like joe stevenson shouldnt be there Bj should.

Yeah, I don’t see how Stevenson is so highly touted right now. Yes, he beat a very tough Melvin Guillard, but people get caught. BJ should be # 1. Good thing their rankings don’t count for anything.

throw stevenson in the ring wit Ken-Flo so we can find out what joe is all about. winner should fight Penn for the title. If the muscle shark is guilty!

Ehhhh I really have mixed feelings about no contests in general. I mean when you think about it, when a guy taps he is saying to everyone “Hey man I had way too much and I cant take it anymore please stop the fight”.
In that case a guy should lose hands down.
Then you have a guy who is just plain knocked out as was Gray Maynard. The thing is though, Rob Emerson was not in the process of throwing a punch or a kick to score the KO, therefore I dont think a contest was the right call in that instance.
Gray is a solid fighter and he isnt afraid to band at all even though he can take guys down at will

I wanna see Gray fight himself. I got Maynard by KO in the first

They actually did have a rematch. The contraversial fight was at UFC 34 and after each fighter having 1 fight each they rematched at UFC 38 so I don’t think it would have made much difference in the long run if it had been ruled a no contest.
