UFC 76: Jason Lambert vs. Wilson Gouveia

Hard-hitting Jason Lambert (23-6) will take on Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist Wilson Gouveia (9-4) in a light heavyweight clash at UFC 76 on September 22, according to MMAWeekly.com.

Lambert is riding high after his upset -- and eye-opening -- knockout win over Renato "Babalu" Sobral at UFC 68 back in March. It was redemption for "The Punisher" after getting pounded out hard in his fight before that against Rashad Evans at UFC 63.

Since a unanimous decision loss to Keith Jardine in his Octagon debut at The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 3 Finale, Gouveia is on a three-fight win streak inside the Octagon. The American Top Team-trained fighter will make to look to make it four in a row against Lambert after finishing Wes Combs, Seth Petruzelli and Carmelo Marrero all by way of submission.

Lambert has not been submitted since 2001. And he demonstrated solid submission defense during his last bout with Babalu -- one of the best grapplers in the sport -- to survive the first round.

According to the report, the match up between Lambert and Gouveia will more than likely earn a spot on the main card along with fights between Mauricio "Shogun" Rua vs. Ryoto Machida, as well as Jon Fitch vs. Diego Sanchez.

This suprised me, somebody posted on here that Lambert didn’t renew his contract back on one of the shogun blogs. I didn’t want him to beat Babalu but since he did I hope he continues his win streak. Gouveia is tough but from what I can remember about his fights he is all about round 1, then he gases really bad.

I like Lambert; he’a a good guy. I would have loved to see Lambert fight Forrest Griffin. I think that fight would have been better than fighting Gouveia. I would have even preferred Lambert to fight Jardine instead of Gouveia. Either way, it is good to see “The Punisher” back in the Octagon.

Wilson Gouveia’s previous three fights really impressed me. Especially hie last one. He looked so effortless. I really think that he has a lot of potential, even in the loaded 205lb division.

Jason Lambert is no joke, his only loss I believe in the octagon was against Rashad Evans.
Lambert is a tough dude and he is pretty big for a 205 pounder.
I would rather see a Josh Haynes vs. Jason Lambert just because both of them have similiar body types (even though Lambert would literally destroy papa smurf) but Wilson vs. Jason should be a barn-burner brawl.
If Jason wins, he should be moved up to the possible top 5 or 6 in line for the championship.

If I recall correctly Jason really impressed me against Babulu and for that fight alone, he earned my respect. I think he would stand a decent chance against anyone in the 205 lb division. He’s not that far up the ladder yet but he definitely would stand a chance.

Youre out of your mind. 205 is stacked and will be for a while. Come on. Beating Babalu isnt really that much of an accomplishment. Not saying hes a bad fighter, just not good enough to compete with the top. Sho-gun, rampage, chuck, henderson would absolutly demolish this guy at this point. All Im sayin is that we cant judge this guy with Babalu being his only notable win

Lambert’s got a pretty good resume, with most of his losses coming early in his career at heavyweight against respectable fighters (Marco Ruas, Tim Sylvia, Cabbage). He still has to show us why we should forget about his loss to Rashad Evans, but beating Babalu was a good start. Gouveia is a BJJ ace who’s done well against low-level opponents, but I don’t think he wants Lambert in his guard. Lambert will take this one pretty easily, but beating Gouveia won’t help him crack A-Level status. I hope it makes the broadcast, though.

I think both of these guys are “verge” fighters. By that, I mean that they are both on the verge of being both two serious contenders and well known. Whoever wins this should expect to see themselves being featured on a main card. Not a main event mind you, but def on the main card with a chance to take it to another legit fighter.

When that UFC game comes out, Im gonna be Jason Lambert in career mode.

I think Lambert is a good fighter, with lots of potential. Does that mean he is towards the top of 205? Nerp…Guy – just like alot of fighters- needs refinement. Ill watch this fight, expecting Lambert to bring the same sparks he did against Sobral.

gouveia will beat lambert and look for the winner to fight the winner of shogun/lyoto. with that winner getting a title shot at the ufc january show

Lambert was really out of shape when he fought Evans. He got destroyed. Gouveia’s only loss was to Keith Jardine, and he broke his foot in that fight. Gouveia has good stand-up as well. I’ll admit, he hasn’t really been tested, but at the same time, I see Gouveia winning this fight. Lambert has good grappling, but he’ll be too slow against someone like Gouveia.
