Video: Train with the best, BJ Penn

UFC lightweight Joe Lauzon is packing up his things and moving to the "Big Island" to live and train with BJ Penn at his academy in Hilo, Hawaii.

Why?

Because according to "The Prodigy:"

"Move and train somewhere for a year or a year and a half... then go somewhere else. Thats how you be the best."

Here's what Lauzon can expect:

Im with BJ, definitely the best way to go about it. You arent gonna get the best Jujitsu, wrestling, GNP, kick boxing, and sprawling all in one place.

I kind of like the “run to the top of a grassy hill where some guy starts whaling on you” drill.

Nice vid, anyway here are some MMA news:

Gomi signs with K-1 HERO’s, which means we might see a potential Gomi-Diaz II in a cross-promotion event, as he leaves for EliteXC most likely.

Liddell-Silva will go down at UFC 76, Chute Boxe sources say there is a verbal agreement and both parties have agreed on the numbers and so forth.

Aaaaand…. well, huge news by end of the week, but those are rumors and I am waiting for a 2nd source to confirm. Stay tuned.

Not really, i found it funny as hell.

Tapped, Did Gomi have anything left on his Pride contract? Zuffa is throwing lawyers all over Pride contracts right now (like Soko..)

Not all contracts could be transfered. Most of the recent new fighters of Pride have a contract that ties them to Zuffa now, with Gomi it was not the case. Soko was quite new to Pride, so yea – his contract situation is somewhat a big question mark.

I talked to Zelg (“Benkei” Galesic), who had his PrideFC debut at Pride 33 and he said his contract has been transfered to Zuffa, but as they don’t organize any fights he’s waiting for his next fight. It’s somewhat unclear if/how Zuffa will transfer the contracts to Pride Worldwide, the new organization or simply let Dana loot the remaining assets (contracts).

Did anyone else read the article linked? According to it, Joe Lauzon has 8 more fights on his current 9-fight contract with UFC. That’s a lot of fights.

Exactly, guy is gonna be one of the best fighters in the world with his rate of developement.

I’d like to see BJ go train with Sherk. BJ can show Sherk how to finish a fight and Sherk can show BJ a little about conditioning.

I guess since the “rumour” is that they are going to fight, that won’t happen. Maybe after their fight it’ll be like the Pulver “hey, you beat the hell out of me, let’s go train together”.

I think this is good for Lauzon (oh right, thats what this thread is supposed to be about). I was beginning to fear he would turn out like melvin guillard and stephan bonnar, too proud to leave his camp until he has dropped a few fights.

I see both he and BJ gaining a lot from this. BJ needs more quality training partners and Joe needs some guidance from someone who knows more. I can see Joe absorbing a lot of the info that Penn gives him.

I don’t doubt that, I’m just a bit surprised. That’s got to be the longest contract I think I’ve seen. The UFC’s locked him in for 2-3 years.

Training with BJ will put Lauzon into contendership position if he makes the most of it. I think Lauzon is a great fighter, but would not be a champion for a long time coming.

Since BJ is staying in 155, I doubt he’ll want to challenge his own mentor if BJ wins the belt. And no offense, but Joe isn’t anywhere near the fighting level of Sean Sherk. No offense I don’t think anyone else can touch those guys at 155 in the UFC right now (not to say they won’t sign someone else, or another elite WW drops to 155).

I honestly think the NJ vs. Sherk will determine the king of 155 for the next couple of years as the rest of the competition isn’t near their level. The division would catch up in time, but in the immediate future I see a 2 horse race at 155.

In time, maybe 3 years or so Joe may evolve to be a dominant player at 155, but I don’t expect him to carry the belt.

haha, yeh that video showed all the training bj has ever done. this is good for lauzon as he gets to train with one of the most skilled fighters in the world, but hope he doesnt end up like bj, loads of talent with nothing in the tank

I saw this happening on the show. The way BJ was praising him for being so coachable and how well he listened. BJ took him under his wing. You could see Joe was his favorite. Kinda like Tito and Matt Hamil. (who I’m rooting for to beat Bisping)

This will only make Joe one of the best lightweights in the future of the division. He has good wrestling and good BJJ. But BJ is going to get him to the next levl and also improve his striking, cuz that’s where he lacks the most. Yeah he knocked out Jens, but he looked like junk against Brandon at the finale.

You guys are too harsh on BJ gassing in fights. I think it relates more to being hurt during the fight. I’m thinking of the Matt Hughes fight.
I can’t believe the UFC locked Joe up to a 9 fight contract. I thought they do 3 or 4 at best. What is the source of that info? If so, they scored a coup, because Lauzon is only 22 and I think that he is in the top 5 in that division. I really wish we had seen Lauzon vs Diaz in that finale. I’ll settle for Lauzon vs Fisher. I hope that’s the next match up for Joe. Last I heard both camps wanted it

Fisher is fighting Din Thomas at FIght Night 11. Lauzon would have a long lay off for that to happen. I’m guessing he will have one opponent (possibly a newcomer) to steamroll and then he will take on Fisher.
