UFC 73: Fighter paydays and salaries

UFCmania.com has received the fighter payouts for UFC 73: "Stacked" from the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) for the event held on July 7 at the Arco Arena in Sacramento, Calif.

Even though two champions retained their belts, one former champion, Tito Ortiz, was the big money winner, bringing home a flat salary of $210,000.

Minotauro Nogueira also faired well in his debut, earning $100,000 to show and $100,000 to win -- although he was seconds away from losing out on that bonus.

Here are all the UFC 73 payouts:

Anderson Silva — $90,000 ($45,000 to show, $45,000 to win)
Nathan Marquardt — $24,000
Silva defeated Marqaurdt via technical knockout in round one

Sean Sherk — $28,000 ($14,000 to show, $14,000 to win)
Hermes Franca -- $14,000
Sherk defeated Franca via unanimous decision

Tito Ortiz — $210,000
Rashad Evans — $16,000
Ortiz and Evans fought to a three-round draw

Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira— $200,000 ($100,000 to show, $100,000 to win)
Heath Herring — $70,000
Nogueira defeated Herring via unanimous decision

Kenny Florian — $16,000 ($8,000 to show, $8,000 to win)
Alvin Robinson — $3,000
Florian defeated Robinson via submission (strikes) in round one

Stephan Bonnar — $32,000 ($16,000 to show, $16,000 to win)
Mike Nickels — $5,000
Bonnar defeated Nickels via submission (rear naked choke) in round one

Jorge Gurgel — $14,000 ($7,000 to show, $7,000 to win)
Diego Saraiva — $3,000
Gurgel defeated Saraiva via unanimous decision

Chris Lytle — $20,000 ($10,000 to show, $10,000 to win)
Jason Gilliam — $3,000
Lytle defeated Gilliam via submission (triangle choke) in round one

Frank Edgar — $10,000 ($5,000 to show, $5,000 to win)
Mark Bocek— $3,000
Edgar defeated Bocek via technical knockout (strikes) in round one

Keep in mind the salaries listed above do not include signing bonuses, sponsorships, pay-per-view percentages and other unofficial payments. For example, Lytle recieved a bonus for "Submission of the Night," and Gurgel and Saraiva received bonuses for, "Fight of the Night."

The total fighter payroll for the UFC 73 was $761,000.

Tito = Overpaid Underperformed

by [w153r] on Jul 9, 2007 3:52 PM EDT reply actions

if anderson silva would have lost, he would have only got 45 grand and a heath herring loss nets him 70 grand, that just doesn’t seem right to me…

by tha spida on Jul 9, 2007 3:54 PM EDT reply actions

Herring gets 70k to loose and Sherk the f*cking champ gets 28K to win? I think Sherk brings in more money than Herring. WTF???

Big Nog got a lot more than I thought for his debut, he is a big name but should not be making more than Silva, who has already established himself here.

I expected 200 for Tito, he sucks but he still brings in the fans. Hopefully the hype will end soon.

by ragnarr on Jul 9, 2007 3:57 PM EDT reply actions

How do you only pay Sherk $14000 to show and double that if he wins? I hope he is at the end of his contract! It seems like tito got overpaid but he sold a large majority of the ppvs like he does everytime he is on the card……..

by Dan the Man on Jul 9, 2007 4:01 PM EDT reply actions

its crazy sherk (the champ) got paid less than bonnar, and less than half of what herring got to lose, and marquardt in a loss got almost as much, sherk needs a new contract, he’s way way underpaid…

by tha spida on Jul 9, 2007 4:02 PM EDT reply actions

Some of these dudes sure need to upgrade their contract. Is there any bonus for winning / defending the belt? Sherk sure isn’t getting a very nice check (Hell, Bonnar made more)…..and B.J. will probably take the belt before he gets to the “Big Money”.

Probably their own fault for not negotiating a better contract though.

Hey DANA……Pay your champions!! Nog and Herring were both way overpaid. Tito’s pay is probably justified somewhat…but still not right. Just my opinions here.

Funny (in a not-so-funny way) that the Fight of the Night wasn’t even shown on the $45 PPV… That just sucks.

someone should pay me 25 grand to let anderson silva knock me out.

by mike on Jul 9, 2007 4:05 PM EDT reply actions

yeah how can a douche bag like tito get a base salary thats higher than a current champ? I hope Sean Sherk gets paid well from his sponsors! I like Big Nog but thats a lot of money for a debut. Herring Gets more money than a champ? WTF!? I guess these former Pride guys get the good deals while long time UFC fighter get the shaft.
I really want to know how much the UFC really pays these guy. Dana White always defends the salaries by saying they get more money that isn’t announced but how much really? Dana is about 50% full of it when it comes to info so I don’t really know.

TITO 210 AND RASHAD 16 IS THE BIGGEST BS. DANA KNOWS TITO VS RASHAD 2 IS GOING TO BE BIG SO IF I WERE RASHAD, I WOULD HOLD OUT FOR A NEW CONTRACT. ATLEAST GET TO 50.

I dont care is Sean Sherk is 155lbs. , this is not boxing Dana pay the champ his f-ing money. 14,000 just to show up and he wins so he takes home 28,000 ? This is his full time gig so get it through your hea Dana.

Sean Sherk : $28,000
Stephen “I use steroids and havent fought in 12 months” Bonnar : $32,000
Heath “bitch tits” Herring : $70,000
Being the UFC president and not paying my fighters what they deserve based on PPV sales (over $40 million) : priceless…… wait better make the FU Ked UP !!!

Just because you are in a lighter weight class doesnt mean you should get paid less.

Herring= garbage
Nog= past his prime= garbage
tito= way overpaid= also garbage.

Anybody wonder why Brandon Vera was bitching about not getting paid enough? While guys in his weight class like herring, who has a losing record in the octagon, are getting way more? I would be in EliteXC if I saw that sh*t going on.

I think they all got paid fair enough according to the ppv buys they bring in. Only concern was Herring getting 70k, I think part of that should have went to Sherk.

These fighters need to start a union or something, there is way too much disparity between the pay for these guys. The UFC is making money hand over fist, I think all of these guys are getting screwed.

Who would want to see a tito rashad 2? It had to be the most boring fight of the evening. Sherk’s boring, but he doesn’t hold back. Two non-contenders fighting conservatively isn’t worthy of a free showing, much less ppv.

UFC is taking these fighters to the cleaners….They all need to wake up, go on strike or some s%i% or move to another organization…For somebody as bad as Silva to put on a pretty good show and be the champ and only make that much money….Damn the Silva boys and White are screwing these guys over big time. Just my thoughts.

by whatthe f on Jul 9, 2007 6:18 PM EDT reply actions

Guys, do your homework. Herring was bought in with an existing contract, so the UFC has to pay him what his old (WFA) contract said. You shouldn’t cry about fighters getting too much, because frankly: you can’t get overpaid if you risk your health and fight a guy in a cage.

Sherk did not fought for 9 months, he has to make a living fighting and the UFC pays him 28k. How is he supposed to live, train, pay sparring partners, support his family, and so on!? Those sallaries are the saddest thing I saw for a long time.

Why do I at age 23 with an average job earn more than the lightweight ufc champion? Sherk fights twice a year and makes 56 k? They made it sound on the ppv that Sherk finally made it after years of struggling financially in mma and he’s barely making a living wage for a guy with a family. That guy deseves more. He dedicates every moment of his life to the sport and Dana White is counting pennies.

by gregg on Jul 9, 2007 7:06 PM EDT reply actions

wow. With these numbers….. I would rather be in the decline of boxing and get paid millions then be in the up and coming UFC and get paid thousands. I always knew MMA fighters didnt get paid a lot but jesus dude….. Something isnt right here. UFC must be rolling in dough since theyre keeping a TON of the percentage.

Not only then, Heath was brought in to spiff up the HW division. Soon after Pride was purchased, Mirko was brought in… so he is truely disposable now and more likely to throw fights, like he did on Sat.

and everybody wonders why aint fedor in ufc ohh hes scared to fight real competition …?? shit if ufc would pay their fighters like the boxers are getting paid …there is plenty of money to go around i mean they have events about once a month ..with ppv and tickets they have to be profiting huge …but like boxings promoters the ufc “suit” are robbing their fighters ..and right now its hot ..but will it continue to grow if the best athletes in the world have a choice either i can go to the nfl nba mlb or even hockey and soccer pay their athletes more …or i can go to the ufc win the title and make $28k per fight i mean even if dana is right and they get more that isnt anounced how much more ..?? even if you they make 50k more thats still not even in the million range …per year …you can be a bench warmer in baseball and make more than chuck lidell in a year …no name boxers often make more than ufcs biggest stars ….its ridiculous …and even though its not as corrupt yet as boxing and doesnt have all the politics yet as boxing and dana says boxing is the blueprint of what ufc does not want to do …he is letting the “suits” greed ruin the sport ..because the best athletes want the best paydays and ufc has a stronghold on keeping the money in their pockets …that is why fedor is not there …and wont be till ufc pays him what hes worth …this is why the best athletes will go to other sports that pay more … they can no longer say that they dont have the money to pay them big salaries cause the sport is bigger and more profitable than ever …and i mean come on at least pay them more then the wnba …as a pro athlete its embarrasing ….!!

by Mikeb on Jul 9, 2007 10:39 PM EDT reply actions

A contract doesn’t reflect what you’re presently worth, it reflects what you were worth when you signed the contract. They don’t negotiate payment everytime a fighter fights. If you were an unknown heavyweight that signed a 3 fight contract for $60k, and you beat Crocop and Big Nog, guess how much you make in your fight against Fedor? Only $20k, but you can expect a huge pay raise after that fight, win or lose.

As far as Sherk’s pay goes, that was the last fight on his old contract, which was signed before he was the LW champion. Expect a significant raise when he fights again in November.

by IceMuncher on Jul 9, 2007 11:31 PM EDT reply actions

I wish they would go to some even purse, cause it is starting to look like they feed some fighters cans.

Heath was paid to lose, that is how it looks to me. Totally threw the fight. He looked out of shape, and he fought different after he got that lucky kick.

One other point I think should be made. Dana is treating the UFC like the restaurant industry… I know what you’re probably thinking so yes I will explain.

As I am sure we all are aware, waitors only make roughly $3 dollars an hour, so after a 10 hour shift, we’ve made only 30 bucks. It seems absurd and it is. Restaurant owners pay this incredibly low wage on the basis that they ASSUME the customers who eat will tip properly. Even if very good tips are made by waitors, it is ridiculous and wrong to base someone’s salary based on WHAT THEY COULD MAKE.

Dana is paying these fighters such a small amount of money when it comes to their purse because like a restaurant owner, he is assuming that guys like Sean Sherk and Anderson Silva are earning funds in other ways like through sponsorships, public appearances, and so on. It is wrong and the UFC cannot justify this anymore. Dana gets away with this because he tries getting in goo with the fighters when he makes his lame “bounty” pre fight speeches………

An eample of what occurs pre PPV fights…..

“Ok guys I got 15,000 cash going to the person who puts on the fight of the night. 10,000 will go to the best overall knockout and another 10,000 will be given to the guy who has the best submission”
-Dana White

Do you see this nonsense ? He is tricking his fighter in to thinking he is upping the ante and making it worth their while. See the figures I just wrote ? Dana is shelling out an additional $45,000 in cash come to end of the night when he should be given them all 1-3% of the PPV sales and have top guys and champions take home 3-5% of those sales. When you bring in 8-11 million ppv buys, that is a REAL PAYOFF not some cheap leftover cash that Dana prob had inhis jean pockets after a night at a strip club.

I ran a successful snow removing company back when I was 10 years old. We were quite ahead of our time haha. Sure we only netted $315 dollars that winter but I can tell you this. Dana White is somewhere rolling weed with $100 bills and lighting all of his excess money up while Sean Sherk is starving with his $28,000. UFC fighters are way underpaid. Not to mention they have no health coverage, that is unless they dip in to their pockets and buy some. I mean did you see Jorge Gurgel’s face after his fight ? Wow talk about possibly needing an MRI.

Does that answer your question Luppers ?

by bw on Jul 10, 2007 11:41 AM EDT reply actions

Here’s my question, and one that I’ve never seen answered. We all know the base salary numbers, because those are public knowledge. But does anybody have a clue what these rumored “bonuses” amount to? I keep hearing about how the base figures aren’t the whole story, and guys are getting other payments. But how much?

by rageon on Jul 10, 2007 12:33 PM EDT reply actions

I dont ‘think’ the UFC has bonuses outside of winning…
Pride supposedly had a lot of bonuses if the fight ended with a KO or submission, but I havent heard about any other bonuses for achievements in the UFC. Correct me if Im wrong though…

He offers these guys “cash bonuses” for knockouts, submissions, and fight of night type deals because he is figures the fighters too be stupid. By waving somemoney around if figures these guys think hey I am getting a nice deal if I can put on a good show.

What they should be asking for are percentages of PPV sales. My message to Dana and company…. “Its only a matter of time before these guys wake up and come to bloggers like us for management representation”

Seriously without the fighters there is no UFC, in due time these guys are going to step up for themselves, maybe they need a veteran like Tito Ortiz to follow. Afterall with all of his brash talk he tells it exactly how it is. Dana definitly is threathened by his outbursts and tried to downplay Tito in interviews.

by Kevin Kelly on Jul 10, 2007 2:12 PM EDT reply actions

SERIOUSLY! Everybody here loves MMa and the ufc in particular, but this is bullshit! Plain bullshit. It is true that Dana White made the ufc what it is today, but he is ROBBING these fighters. He is such a hypocrite wheb he says mma is kicking boxings’ ass and then pays a champion fighter of his 1% ( 1% of say, $2million is $20,000)of what a boxing champion would normaly make in a fight. Everybody here needs to go to ufc.com and email them how the true fans feel about this. And I don’t care if it’s someone’s first fight in the ufc but they have ti be decent to get here and 3grand is nothing. I can’t remember who said it a whle back but they had this great, fair, idea about how to pay fighters. For every fight there is a lump sum of money, that is split between the two fighters. Depending on how you win you get more for subs or a ko than you do for a ud win. Lets also say they get more added on depending on how long they have been fighting in the ufc. Seems fair.

by Mattchupichu on Jul 10, 2007 3:16 PM EDT reply actions

Might see more agressive fights if some fighters didn’t have so much cash padding(Tito I’m looking at you) regardless of the outcome. Seems like so must coasting and decisions these days.

by WufcWE on Jul 10, 2007 7:17 PM EDT reply actions

ufc fighters need to get together and go on strike because the ppvs are doing so well. dana can afford to pay his fighters alot better. the fighters should have already realized this, i think it is only a matter of time. 200,000 is about right for tito but the champs should get alot more; look at the champs in boxing theyre making millions. thats why yhe best athletes are still in boxing. i would love to see some of the top boxers today learn mma. but the money isnt right.
