Matt Serra vs. Matt Hughes: See you in December

tuf6mattserramatthughes.jpg
UFC fans are going to have to wait longer than expected to see the welterweight showdown between reigning 170-pound champion Matt Serra and former titleholder Matt Hughes.

December 29 to be exact ... six months from now.

That's the word from a recent post Hughes made on his Web site, which was also corroborated by Nick Serra -- Matt Serra's brother -- on the Underground forum.

Here's the snip from Hughes (via FiveOuncesofPain):

"I have been told that it will be in Las Vegas on New Year's Eve. I do not know where yet, MGM or Mandalay Bay. I would not make plans yet — just letting you know, matt"

Both Matt's are currently taping The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 6 reality series, for which both are opposing coaches.

That season is scheduled to feature 16 welterweight prospects and debut in August or September 2007.

It's quite a while to wait for the showdown, considering Hughes last competed in March and Serra in April. Maybe it's part of a big New Year's Eve extravaganza.

Only time will tell ... it's just a very long time to wait.

Too many guys in one class. I bet you it turns out like this season. Half of the guys dont belong in MMA.

That is pathetic, having to wait that long to watch these two fight. I was at UFC 69 when Serra pulled off the biggest upset in UFC history ever against my boy GSP. He won the fight fair and square but to let him hold onto the belt for over 8 months without having to defend it. There is too much talent in this divison to wait 8 months to watch a title shot. Looks like GSP wont be Champ till next year…

by Chris on Jun 26, 2007 10:00 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I couldnt agree more Chris. Long waits like this are weak. GSP is also my boy, and after he dismantles KOS, we still have to wait till probably April for any re match.

Serra is becoming the next Sean Sherk – an alibi champ who never actually defends his title, but finds time to grouphug the miletich fighters at UFC events or in Serra’s case is taping a reality show.

Now what does that have to do with competitive sport? And you guys speak so highly what Dana did for this sport… he’s the next fucking Don King and will ruin the legitimacy of this sport.

i dont think TUF6 will be very successful. hughes and serra are both in weird situations, like serra is a nice guy with obvious talent, but he did de-throne a very popular fighter. and then there is hughes, a douchebag. i love gsp and i hope he gets his belt back but i think koscheck is more of a challenge for him than hughes or serra. and i will root for gsp and serra but sadly i really think at least 1 of them will lose.

I’ve said it before and I will definitly say it right now. The UFC, more specifically, Dana White has for the past 8 months has prided himself on the basis that the UFC is far and beyond boxing. While I am convinced that MMA is here to stay and that boxing is dying, I love nothing more than watching a great techincal fight a la Taylor/Hopkins or Winky Wright/Hopkins.

However Dana needs to get off of his high horse, Thats right Dana I said it. Stop trying to play some kind of marketing guru which you are not. I went to school, I got me a degree in Business and a Masters in one too, all in 5 years. While I spent most of my nights playing beer pong and slapping freshmen ass, Ive realized that a good business man knows his audience. THIS AUDIENCE DOES NOT WANT TO WANT AN EXTRA TWO MONTHS FOR THIS TO GO DOWN (SHOULD BE HAPPENING IN OCTOBER).

DANA PLEASE STOP WATCHING YOUR 3 VOLUME SET ON HOW TO BE A PROMOTER LIKE ME
-DON KING

Dana prides himself on how we as the UFC is better than boxing yet he is BECOMING the biggest hypocrite. The last great UFC that we all saw was UFC 66. I saw this because UFC 66 had all 8-9 fights aired for our pleasure. These days there is a “televised portion” portion of the card only. Since when does the UFC earn the right to only show 5 fights? You say you are better than boxing Mr. White but I say you are a hypocrite. You complain how De La Hoya / Mayweather only had 2 undercard fights but the way you are directing the UFC, today and now, we only have 4 undercard fights and the main event KEY WORD : TELEVISED PORTION

You are making tons of money in PPV’s an gate admissions yet fighters are still getting paid A COUPLE GRAND for their efforts (NO HEALTH COVERAGE BY THE WAY)

Come on Dana I love watching MMA more specifically the UFC, and I know your organization is better than this. Keep giving us the great mega fights every 3-4 months. Dont let your ego get too big where you make us wait 2 years for a star studed fight. This time we have to wait until December, WHICH IS PROBABLY 2 MONTHS AFTER THE TUF6 ENDS, next time will it be 5 months?, 8 months?

Get you head on straight !!!

This is too long to wait, and it is unfair to all of the other quality fighters in the division. I like Hughes, but it does seem like the UFC bends over backwards to serve him while giving little respect to the other contenders (GSP, Kos, Karo, Fitch, Swick). One of the parts of MMA that I like(ed) was that the top fighters competed three to four times a year. To have to wait this long for what is really a poor fight (Serra got lucky and is a second class ww at best) is not good for the UFC or the fans.
White better return to the basics of what brought the UFC to this point, or he may find that the sport will cease to grow at the rate he wants or expects.

Way too long to wait…Hughes will take Serra, but it should be somewhat of a fight. I liked Serra until he won the belt. He was awesome on TUF, but he has made some questionable comments as of late. He’s not good enough to be overly cocky as there are at least 5 or 6 fighters in his weight class who would take his belt from him (Hughes, GSP, Diego, Fitch, Karo and possibly KOS). I look forward to watching him get grounded and pounded.

GSP and KOS may turn into an excellent fight. KOS has improved his striking, and he was already an awesome wrestler. He will not be a push over for GSP. Could go either way. I really hope GSP comes back to form – if he does, he’ll be a champ again (depending on how long he has to wait for a shot…)

by WADZ on Jun 27, 2007 9:34 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

This wait is far too long.

I wonder if they’re just trying to kill any momentum Serra might have coming off that huge upset… ?

In such a stacked division, there should not be 8 months between title shots. That should be the most exciting division in the UFC.

by Fidel Cashflow on Jun 27, 2007 9:40 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Wow…Way to cool off what was a division that was on fire. There were so many potential fights lined up and so many matches to see who would get the next title fight and now it’s delayed until next year. If GSP loses the belt after regaining it this time, I’ll lose it. It will take him probably close to a year to get it back and hopefully that will make him never want to lose it again.

I can just imagine that come September, Dana will announce some stupid shit like

“The coaches for TUF season 7 will be Chuck Liddell and Wanderlei Silva. We will begin filming the season in 8 months. This season we will be featuring the lightweights again, and since we had so much talent in season 5, we are going to have 64 lighweight fighters in the house. So you will se 62 preliminary fights before the live finale airs on Spike featuring Liddell/Silva on April 20th, 2010.”

I don’t want to fan the flames of the Boxing vs. MMA holy war, but this is one of the things I can’t stand about boxing. Once a guy reaches the top he fights once a year, if that. I’ve always thought that one of the reasons you could get away with paying MMA fighters a good, but realistic wage (less than 10 million per fight) is that they’re capable fighting 3 to 5 times per year. So if a guy gets 500k x 3, plus endorsements, ppv %age, etc. then he’s making out alright. If the top dogs start fighting once every 10 to 18 months, that’ll will probably lead to the same sport killing payouts that drove boxing to the brink.

I understand that this match up is a product of TUF, but it makes no sense to give Matt Hughes a title shot. He should have to face GSP first, or at least the winner of GSP Koscheck.

I watched the interview with Dana White yesterday on Hot List. He talked about there being a system in place for determining fights. But he also talked about making any match up they want. So which is it? I guess I’ll answer my own question and say, there is not a system. Not a clear or consistent one anyway.

Good or bad?

Just F*ing great…..
Serra will have the belt for another half a year before he loses it.
I think Dana White knows the fans don’t like it but thinking the fans will change their minds after they see the show.

I mean, think about it, GSP will fight in a couple months, assuming he wins, by the time he’s ready to take another fight, the Hughes-Serra saga will just about resolved. Then GSP will fight the winner. You can’t go wrong there….

But that leaves a mess to rest of the Welter W Division.
Dana, I still don’t like you.

BISPING TO BE LH CHAMP!

Oh SNAP!

Im just not happy with the fact that it seems like title holders fight twice a year MAX! I think Silva is gonna be the only fighter that fights more then twice this year and holds a belt. No reason why Hughes shouldnt fight 3-4 times a year, same with Rampage… Sherk and Couture, they are frail, I can understand.

I just really wanna know what direction the producers are gonna go in for this upcoming season of TUF. Serra is obviously a loudmouth arrogant douche that tries to act humble… he also hates Hughes and has called him exactly what Serra is himself. Pot, meet kettle. But as far as anything else is concerned, you really havent seen much of Hughes’ personality on the TUF series. Saw him talk some trash to GSP… but they both respect and like each other. shrug Maybe I just want a bro-mance with Matt Hughes…

Waiting this long is stupid for all reasons I think UFC events in general should happen every 3 weeks . This would allow a lot of the new talent to develop and get octagon experience, this is considering that there are 1000’s of fighters from all over the world willing to showcase thier abilities to a ready and waiting global audience.

I think having the PPV’s more often would be better than all this ultimate fighter crap, let people build their popularity the old way, like Tito Ortiz, Randy Couture And Chuck Liddell have.

Impressive victories builds reputations (e.g. Brandon Vera).

To sum it up; a ppv every 3 weeks, every title should be defended at least every 6 months unless there is a medical reason and finally with more frequent shows there would be no need for shows like TUF

He has time to train just like he did with GSP. It was to Matt’s advantage when GSP got hurt and the fight was delayed! I will be there to see it in Dec.!!

AFTER MATT TAKES HIS BELT BACK FROM SERRA THE UFC SHOULD HOLD AN OPEN TOURNAMENT BETWEEN ALL HIS WEIGHT RIVALS TO FIND THE NEXT #1 CHALLENGER AND THAT WAY YOU WOULD HAVE THE BEST TWO IN THE WEIGHT CLASS FIGHTING OR YOU COULD JUST PUT ST PIERRE UP AGAINST HUGHES WHICH HUGHES WOULD WIN BY SUBMISSION IN THE 3RD ROUND

Matt Serra is the shit talking dick here, not matt hughes from what I’ve seen in this situation. Mr.Serra will most likely be a 1 and done champion. Hughes will come in and slam his punk ass around. BTW, BJ’s BJJ is on a whole another level from Matt Serra’s BJJ. Enjoy your title reign Paper champ, Hughes is going to take it back from you.

Matt Serra lucked out the wholeway through to become champ. When he was ultimate fighter he did nothing to prove that he’s a champ. His matches went to decision. The only good thing I saw this chump do is a lot of foot stomping. He’s is over confident and he’s garbage. He is not even in the same league as hughes and GSP. I mean he got knocked out from a spinning back punch from that clown Shawnie.

Season 6 of the ultmate fighter is boring.I really hope Dana
white makes some changes. The ultmate fighter seems to get
worse with each new season.
