UFC Quick Quote: Penn still has revenge in mind

"I wanna see how good I can get. I'm going to carry this on for the rest of my career. There could only be one person [I want revenge against] and that's Matt Hughes."
-- BJ Penn -- who just avenged his first career loss to Jens Pulver last night at The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 5 Finale -- tells FightNetwork.com that he now has Matt Hughes in his crosshairs. The two each share a win over one another, making another fight the rubbermatch.

Wow! That would be great to watch. However, my feeling is that he should stay at 155. He can man-handle many of the fighters in that weight class. He looked good at 155 last night.

Penn needs to be in the Welterweight. It ain’t even fair at Lightweight. There are MUCH better match ups to be made up in the Welter.

lol..i was reading a thread..and someone said..they would like to see BJ Penn vs Kimbo..lol…funny!
Kimbo actually did very well in this fight. He showed great composure. When Mercer finally got top control, Kimbo had his arm in deep for a choke. Kimbo didn’t look worried at all, even when Mercer got top control. In the end, Kimbo scored him-self his first M.M.A. victory against a Former boxing Heavyweight Champion. Well done Kimbo!!!….lol…You can even see Kimbo utilize a full-guard..it looks funny coming from Kimbo, considering he’s a street fighter. But kimbo did good..i’m very surprised he did all of that in 3 months. Kimbo is only 31 too. who knows what can happen….?

Penn can fight in either division. The Lightweight atm is a lot weaker in talent and it’ll be easier for him to become champion, but penn isn’t about that. I think he’s going after Matt Hughes then maybe St. Pierre to avenge those decisions.

I agree. Penn could easily take control over the lightwieght division, however it seems he would rather take the more challenging way. Good for him. Maybe he finally has a good work ethic. BJ Penn in good shape is dangerous for anyone.

Penn’s 28 not 18, I don’t think he wants to go through the ordeal of trying to cut weight.
As most fighters age, they start to move up in weight, look at DeLahoya or Jones Jr.
I think this has happened with Penn, especially since he moved up all the way to LHW when he fought Machida.
Once you put on that much weight, it’s hard to cut back down without losing stamina and speed. You screw your metabolism up when you move way up in weight and then all the back down, in yo yo fashion.
Penn is probally now a natural WW, and I want to see him fight at his natural weight

Penn totally destroyed Jens and would probably run through any light weight, except Sherk. His frame is well suited for 155lbs I think he should stay there, I think his chances of dominating the light weight division is much better than the welter weight division. BJ’s problem is he’s all over the place he should just stay in one division and really focus on the title. He did well against St.Pierre and Hughes so he would do really well against the light weights and would most lightly beat Sherk, if his condition matched his talent.

155 is where he needs to stay, he If he wants to move WW fine, I just think he wont have the same success as he will at LW.

This fight will prove to be a turning point in The Prodigys career. He tasted sweet revenge and he is going to want it again. I think he finally trained correctly and it really showed. I want to see my boy Penn move back to WW and take on GSP and that punk Hughes.

I think LW is solid. Sherk at the top going against Franca. Huerta is up there. In time the Diaz’s, Lauzon, Manny Gambino.. all might be contending. What about this Gomi dude? I haven’t seen him fight yet so I don’t know. I wish Penn would climb to the top of the hill at LW first, just to prove he can do it, and then move up.

Yeah, Penn doesn’t seem to be worried about the size disadvantage. In fact, I think that is part of the allure, to him, of the welterweight division. I’m curious to see what his new conditioning coach can do to get him ready for that division.

BJ Penn fought him at an ROTR event a few years back, at 155. It was a three round war that Penn ended with a rear naked choke. Gomi is pretty sick and has also destroyed Pulver, along with several other fighters.

I agree learn to crawl before you learn to walk, Penn has the habit of biting off more than he can chew. I agree, beat the light weight division first THEN consider the welter weight division, like St.Pierre and Hughes clear out your division first before thinking about moving up. I really think Penn could clean out the Light Weight Division if he kept his cardio top notch and remained focused, but would have a hard time with the welter weight division. So many of the guys walk around at 180 – 185 and solid too, St.Pierre walks around at 185 much more solid than Penn at 158. I honestly think if St.Pierre and Penn fought again it would be a much worse loss for Penn the second time around. Like I said he should try to dominate the light weight division then move up, because if he can’t do that why fight bigger guys? it doesn’t make sense.

Don’t get me wrong about Penn I think pound for pound he might be the best fighter in the world, I just think Hughes and St.Pierre are much bigger than him so is Sanchez and Koscheck. Size isn’t everything but why not compete against guys your own size, Penn is so talented and is very strong for his size considering how much muscle he has, sometimes he seems like he gets carried away like taking on Lyoto. The guy should stay at 155 and get the title then go for the welter weight title, if he gets that then think of going to middle weight. I’m a fan of Penn and whooped it up when he won, I just would prefer to see him fight where he would thrive, his frame is much better suited for 155 and think he would be wicked at 145, St.Pierre is more solid at 185 than Penn is at 158 so I know he could make 145. Penn kind of reminds me of Hughes and St.Pierre wanting to fight in a higher weight class then loses there next fight, clean out your division first before moving up.

everyone seems to be on this size issue with bj weight and stamina. well first off bj has the chance here in my opinion to have two belts by this time next year. just think of this who does sherk look like, he looks like a little matt hughs. I think bj would have no problem like bj would say breaking his shoulder, theres that belt than he could move up and put a hurting on the real hughs and pierre. we are watching i belive to be the best pound for pound figher in the ufc right now go back and forth and kicking the crap out of 155 and 175.
in the end he will destroy anyone that is in his way. look out for the new bj penn.

I’ve never seen anyone get close to taking St.Pierre’s back the man is quite possibly the strongest ufc fighter pound for pound. I would love to see him get a rematch with Penn and feel confident he would win, St.Pierre doesn’t put himself in predicaments like Hughes and gets too close, bj is probably the best fighter on his back out there. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again I think gsp and penn are the most talented fighters in the world pound for pound with raw talent, I think even Fedor is less talented than them but I feel he has them beat in spades in the mental game. Gsp vs Penn would be a great fight but I still think Gsp’s larger size and strength and his pure athleticism would give him the edge. Penn needs to put on 20 lbs on muscle to be a real force in the division, Gsp did overpower penn is there first fight. I really think the unintentional eye poke led to the broken nose which affected his breathing and really f**ked things ups for gsp. I think it would be different today with gsp becoming better and better with his bjj skills, soon he’ll have his blackbelt and be that much more dangerous.

Did you watch the fight? Gsp was clipped to the back of the head and the rest is history, talent had nothing to do with it, Serra proved anyone can lose. All the talent in the world means shite if you get stunned and can’t recover, a bjj black belt means nothing, benching 400 lbs means nothing, olymic gold metalist wrestler means nothing, it could happen to anyone…….a freak hit that incapacitates a fighter.

If he literally beat the crap out of these guys he would have WON. Ya he did bloody up GSP ,but a bloody nose only wins fights in elementary school. The only real damage BJ did was poke him in the eye and clip him with a uppercut to the nose, which is damaging to his performance ,but not so much to the judges scorecards (judges don’t award points for eye pokes). In Gsp vs Penn 2 when Gsp can see and breath properly through his nose ,I think we will see a much more decisive win by Gsp. Bj is a dam good fighter and exciting to watch ,but don’t forget he has a 68% win record which isn’t the gratest.

I used to realy like Matt Hughes and on the Penn vs Hughes fights one and two I wanted Hughes to win,but that all changed when I watched TUF2 and saw how much of a twat Hughes was as a coach.Well it was realy just that one incident where he was giving Rob McDonald a hard time about complaining about his shoulder and talking about him to the other fighters and turning them against him and then McDonald fought and a muscle in his shoulder ripped and you could see it roll down his bicep and still Hughes showed him no respect after it,well that was bad enough but then just resently seeing him laugh at GSP after he was beat by Serra that just solidified my dislike for Hughes and I just want to see him get beat.

The way penn beat Pulver I think he could easily work the 155 weight class…He doesn’t want to sit on top of a weight class, he wants to be the best, and 155 doesn’t have the best. Beating Hughes again, then poss. GSP and getting the belt in that weight class is where it is at…

It made a lot of sense when he moved up and beat the hell out of matt hughes the first time, and should have beaten him again the second time around. He gave St. Pierre a great battle. St. Pierre beat Penn b/c he is stronger than Penn. I’m a St. Pierre guy for life but that’s what I saw. here’s a question… if penn’s as good as he says he is (i should add that i’m a big fan of penn’s), why doesn’t he conquer the lw’s before jumping up a weight class? the guy’s won 1 fight in the last couple of years. similar to tito, less talk and more action…
If it is such a riduculous post how come u responded to none of the statements posted. First off if you are stating that bj is wrighting checks his but cant cash, all you have to do is look him up on utube you will find everything that you need to make your dicison of who the best pound for pound figher is. and he will take over the 155 weight class,u cant just do back to back fights it takes sometime. please dont ever compare tito to bj everagain, he doesnt even deserve to be wrighten about. i belive chuck said it all……hes wrighting checks his butt cant cash.

I am a penn fan till the day i die. The guy just has class after watching uf5. hes trimed down and worked on his stamina alot. and cut weight. I belive he will take 155 and then go after 170, and take that with some work though. It will not be easy to take pieree and hughs. but if anyone could it would be bj.
I dont know if anyone as ever had two belts but i belive bj will do it. go to youtube and tell me what u think of his footage it blew my mind hes a white belt kicking the crap out of black belts. he is the best fighter in the world.\did anyone see andy wang fight what a joke the guy thinks hes a samori. pleas comment back would love your toughts on these topics thank……
