The Ultimate Fighter 5 finale weigh-in results: Melendez doesn't cut it
ÂÂ
The crop of fighters for the UFC Ultimate Finale 5 all weighed-in today without incident with the exception of Brandon Melendez, who at 157 lbs. failed to make weight according to UFC.com.
In the interest of fighter safety, NSAC doctors would not permit Melendez to try and lose the extra pound needed to make weight, instead opting to let the match continue with Melendez being fined 10% of his purse.
That 10% will be split evenly between the NSAC and his opponent Joe Lauzon.
Here are the official results:
BJ Penn (155.5) vs Jens Pulver (152)
Manny Gamburyan (155) vs Nate Diaz (155)
Roger Huerta (155) vs Doug Evans (154)
Floyd Sword (185) vs Thales Leites (186)
Brandon Melendez (157) vs Joe Lauzon (155)
Andy Wang (156) vs Cole Miller (155)
Rob Emerson (155) vs Gray Maynard (155)
Allen Berube (153) vs Leonard Garcia (155)
Brian Geraghty (155) vs Matt Wiman (156)
The Ultimate Fighter 5 finale takes place tomorrow, June 23rd, at the Palms Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
The televised portion on SpikeTV begins at 9 p.m. EST. Quick results will begin to flow earlier than that here at UFCmania.com at about 7 p.m. EST with the undercard action.
We'll be live blogging the event, as well as providing a pre- and post-fight coverage online with our radio call-in program tomorrow night.
Remember to stop in.

Surprised Pulver is coming in so light for this one. 3 pounds or 4 as you are allowed the extra pound in non championship bouts is a lot at 155 to give up. I think BJ might steamroll him…Hope not!

Melendez has to give up 10% of his massive purse. So Lauzon is getting 5% of what… $4,000? Hey 200 bucks is 200 bucks.

Melendez just pissed Dana White right off.

Makes me mad that Roger Huerta is fighting a first time UFCer like Doug Evans whereas a proven UFC fighter like Joe Lauzon is not getting the opportunity to fight Huerta.
Why is the UFC so concerned with making mismatches, instead of working on legitimate properly ranked match ups?

ha I have Brandon Melendez winning in the MMAPlayground thing, he should just go up to 170, because as we saw on the show it is hard for him to make the 155 cut.

I wouldn’t put Lauzon against Huerta yet! The fightmaker seems to funnel guys up to the top. Huerta is “putting together a winning streak” and he should get a match with another top contender soon and the winner will get a title shot.
The name of the game seems to be keeping top guys away from each other until you can setup belt bouts. One Anamoly is at welterweight where GSP and Koscheck are going to fight. There are just too damn many contenders in that class so they are culling the herd a bit.

When I read that Melendez didn’t make weight I was pissed, unitl I saw that the fight is on. Lauzon was my favorite on the show and am looking forward to seeing him Saturday. You guys gotta see Diaz’s weigh in pic on the scale at http://www.ufc.com/index.cfm?fa=MultiMedia.GalleryImgDetail&gid=207&aid=8988&pid=0&catid=0&return=fa=MultiMedia.GalleryImgList&gid=207&pid=0&catid=0&searchstring=

Melendez missing weight isn’t a big deal because the fight is still on, but it could have been huge. It is still a bit of a big deal because, well, did he not see Travis Lutter and Mr Crypants (Gabe) not make weight and now they don’t fight in the UFC.
I just don’t know how you can have an excuse for not making weight.

BJ was looking way more cut than he has in a while. I guess that was always going to be a given being as he has to fight at 155 for this match. I see him taking it to Pulver both on the feet and on the ground.
Penn via submission.
I would make predictions for the rest of the fights, but then you would all have to call me Captain Obvious. These are some one-sided matchups, in my opinion.

Joe Lauzon by heel hook first round, Nate Diaz by knee strikes first round, Penn by left shoulder dislocation round 3, Cole Miller by triangle round one, Maynard TKO first round, Garcia TKO round 1, Wiman KO round 1, Leitas triangle round 2 , Huerta by KO round 1,

This is a Spike telveised card and we arent even getting to watch all of these fights. I mean come on these are amatuer-ish fights at least allow us to view all 8 or 9 of the fights. What are we going to see the three obvious fights only in :
Penn vs. Pulver
Huerta vs. Evans
Diaz vs. Manny

Penn by shoulder dislocation? How did you come up with that one? Don’t get me wrong, I think its funny as hell. I won’t bet against you incase you can predict the future or something. What if you had the famous “magazine” from Back to the Future? You’d be making crazy $!!!

Another thing, I could never understand why fighters cut weight in the first place. Basically too many guys who fight at 155 pounds “walk around” as they call it at 165 pounds or 170 pounds. I ask myself why ?
Seriously if you are a professional athlete and are supposed to fight at a certain weight, why in the world would you “walk around” at any weight higher than you are supposed to weigh in at.
Do the right thing, eat healthy, workout regularly, and not have to worry about “cutting weight”. It is a very uncomfortable thing to do and why fighters and wrestlers constantlt cut weight instead of leading a more normal and healthy lifestyle is beyond me.
You are in a privileged position to earn a nice living for fighting a guy anywhere from 1 second to 15 minutes. Its not a lot to ask for you to show up for work for such a short period of time to get paid. Cut the fast food, the booze, and the sweets out of your diet and suck it up.
If you’d like to fight at 155 pounds, then feel free to fatten up to no more than 158 pounds and “cut” before the fight. Why allow youself to become a fat ass like Gabe Rudiger and try to cut 30 pounds. That in itself is not healthy. If you cant make a certain weight you probably should be fighting at that weight.
