UFC Quick Quote: Vera says 'I'll be ready in 2008'

brandon vera comes back to ufc in 2008

"I'm not afraid of any of them. And that goes for Chuck Liddell, Quinton Jackson, Tito Ortiz and anyone else in the lightheavyweight division. I'm more well-rounded than all of them. I've still got holes in my game. The only guy who doesn't is Fedor. But Irvin and I are working on it, fixing my flaws, hunting for his. It's almost programmed, playing out as planned. I'll be ready in 2008. And when Fedor slips, I'll be there."

-- Undefeated UFC heavyweight star Brandon Vera -- who has not fought inside the Octagon since late 2006 because of contract and management issues -- is quoted on ABS-CBNNews.com as saying that he's a more well-rounded fighter than some of the best in the sport ... except for PRIDE FC Heavyweight Champion Fedor Emelianenko.

Get him in the ring so he has a chance to prove it. I think he’ll back it up more often than not.

My advice to Mr Vera, as country star Toby Keith so elegantly put it: A little less talk and a lot more action.

Good idea. But you know Arlovski is gonna get a fight prob with the loser of couture and ganzaga. All in all though Vera is unstoppable. If and when he goes to lightweight he will be unstoppable.

This guy might be a good figher but what a douche for running his mouth like that. Hasn’t fought in almost a year and calling out those bad assess. Typical arrogant meat head.

Any reason why he has written off the rest of 2007? I really would have liked to see him fight sometime soon.

That article ripped off from Real Fighter Magazine. That’s the same quote he used there about a month ago. Just FYI.

Actually country legend Charlie Daniels is the founder of that quote…you think it’s easy knowing all of this useless trivia?

Oh, and I refer to this as the Rickson Gracie syndrome…it’s much easier to say your the world’s best than to actually go out there and prove it…

I only started listening to country in the past 5 years so my knowledge drops off sharply pre-Alan Jackson pretty much.

Vera looks a little soft in the mid section. Does anyone know is he definitely planning on making LHW? We were talking about Bisping possibly going to MW and one of his coaches or something announce Bis tried to hit 185 but it ain’t happening. Any news like that with Vera?

That’s interesting. What if Couture loses to Gonzaga and really takes a pounding. You would think he should re-retire then but then it will look like he is ducking Arlovski (sh1t I would duck Arlovski for sure) so he’s almost obligated to stick around for one more pounding.

Noguira is going to put the belt on soon and not give it away until Fedor finally steps in.

Brandon Vera VS Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou

MAKE IT HAPPEN!

by MMAFAN204 on Jun 21, 2007 4:44 PM EDT reply actions

Brandon Vera’s nickname couldn’t be any better suited for a fighter. I believe that once he’s filled in the few holes he currently has in his game, he will be even more exciting and dominant.

Come 2008, Brandon Vera will show everyone that even amongst the revitalized best of the UFC, he still will indeed be, “The Truth!”

Bring back Tank Abbot to face Vera.

by KneeToTheFace on Jun 21, 2007 4:54 PM EDT reply actions

Ever since I first saw Brandon Vera fight, it is very easy to tell that this guy is very talented. His only problem is that he thinks he is the best MMA fighter the world has ever seen and deserves at least 1 million dollars per fight. In his career he has beaten a post accident Frank Mir, Asserio Silva (who is the worst fighter I have ever seen with that kind of record – where did he fight pre-UFC Somalia against the natives?), Justin Eilers (lol), Fabiano Scherner, Mike ‘The Pimple’ Whitehead, and I never heard of the guys he beat in his first 3 matches. This is the equivalent to me walking into a 6th grade gym class, beat eveyone’s ass, and then say that I am the best fighter in the world. Give me a break and prove something. Try working on your gut for the rest of 2007.

by ViolentMike on Jun 21, 2007 5:01 PM EDT reply actions

So is he going to fight in light heavyweight then? He called out a lot of light heavyweights. And if he was truly the greatest he would have a belt around his waste. What a dummy.

by c-war on Jun 21, 2007 5:16 PM EDT reply actions

Bring back Tank Abbot to face Vera.

ha I read that and that made me laugh. Good job.

Vera needs to stay up in the Heavyweight Division, I would love to see him to take on the Winner of Minotaro and Heath Herring for his first fight back in the UFC. Or even Jake O’Brien in 2008, because Jake O’Brien was making a splash in the UFC and still could be a force when he comes back healthy.

If he drops down to LHW division, I would love to see Lyoto Machida vs. Brandon Vera, I think that would be a phenominal Ultimate Fight Night Main Event.

Brandon Vera is quick and he is strong, but I don’t see a “hard opponent” that he has fought. You can make a case for Frank Mir, but Frank Mir is a lot different than he used to be.

by "Mr. NC-17" on Jun 21, 2007 5:30 PM EDT reply actions

I hope we see him before 2008. This guy is definately talented and I’d like to see how he stacks up against some of the bigger talents in the division. I think he’s incredibly talented and can definately go places…

by Shadyone33 on Jun 21, 2007 5:37 PM EDT reply actions

Vera could make 205. He’s a soft heavyweight. It’d be good to see him fight, though. Those are some pretty big words without a lot of action to back them up.

by Freddy on Jun 21, 2007 5:39 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, that and what division is he fighting in? He said he’s not afraid of Rampage, Shogun, or Liddell who are all in the 205. Then he says he is going to beat Fedor.

I guess he thinks he can take both divisions, but why not mention one of the current UFC heavyweights then? Fedor isnt in the UFC and from what I hear, doesnt want to be.

Vera is strong as a goddamn ox. He doesn’t have the physique of Melvin Manhoef, but he’s probably just as strong. His grip strength is fucking nuts, too.

Second, his BJJ is SUPER technical. If you really think you Vera is a pushover, come down to Lloyd Irvin’s in Camp Springs, MD. He trains there for about 6 weeks before everyone of his fights. Just show up and he’ll be more than happy to roll with you. You’ll see he didn’t earn his brown belt under a world champion by accident. Oh yeah, and read up on his BJJ championships, too.

Third, his wrestling is incredible as well. Part of the reason he’s so strong and does so well at heavyweight is because he always wrestled heavier guys when he did Greco-Roman. He’s used to muscling people around, bigger guys being no exception. I’m 6’4" and the people who crush me or physically overpower me get RAPED by Vera. Again, Camp Springs, MD. Come see for yourself.

Fourth, Vera and his wife are incredibly nice. Vera’s contract dispute with the UFC was entirely the product of his now former manager. The UFC hated that guy, but loved Brandon. It turns out everyone else hated the guy, too. Brandon was getting bad advice and bad information and is trying now to correct that. As far as his personal manners, he talks to everyone who asks him questions and still calls adults “sir” and “ma’am.”

I’m not suggesting Vera is the next champ in any weight class. Only time will tell, but seriously: [don’t talk shit about] up about people you only read about on the Internet. I’ve only met him a handful of times, but you haven’t and never will. That makes your information incomplete and your opinion unfounded.

by BloodyElbow on Jun 21, 2007 5:59 PM EDT reply actions

Vera vs. Bisping or Hamill would be a good match. Would give one of the two latter guys a shot (Bisping is more deserving of one, IMO) at being a contender in the division.

by KneeToTheFace on Jun 21, 2007 6:21 PM EDT reply actions

I think Vera is a good fighter. He is not a great fighter yet. He hasn’t beaten anyone with a name yet, unless your talking about Mir and Frank has no business even being inside that octagon.

I think Brandon Vera will be the next Frank Shamrock. A Quick rise beating “B” level opponents. And then stepping away from the sport only to talk about how great he is.

In order to be the best you have to beat the best. Brandon Vera hasn’t fought anyone or beaten anyone ehough to talk as much as he does.

Give Vera “Minotauro” or Arlovski. I think Dan Henderson would fuck Vera up. Rampage would fuck him up too. Vera is in for a rude awakening once he fights a real contender.

Let’s be honest, every guy you named above could take your lunch every day and you’d nothing about it. They could date your girlfriend and you’d buy the drinks. These professional fighters are ALL tough, and deserve a certain amount of respect. It’s like saying an NHLer sucks, meanwhile he represents about 3% of all players who dreamed of playing in the bigs. My point, you’re calling out guys who at some point proved themselves worthy of the UFC. They’re tough eneough to be there, unlike us sitting here reading this shit on our computers.

Vera’s undoubtedly a tough cat. He now has to prove it against what is fast becoming a stacked division (the LHW). I can’t see him beating all the LHW’s – Hendo, Lidell, Sylva -but I can see him making waves…

What a joke , Vera would destroy these guys. It’s not just who you beat , it’s how you beat them that tells what kind of fighter you are. Vera destoyed Eilers 3 times faster than AA (former Champion)didn’t (Justin tore his knee out), Vera finished Silva, where as Sylvia (former Champion) couldn’t and he finished Sherner about as fast as GG (fighting for title)did. Not to mention he demolished Mir (former Champ) in 1 minute. YA, YA Mir is washed up, well I’d like to see all the top HW’s TKO him in 1 min. He did all this without hardly taking a scratch in return. It baffles me that some people can’t see that this guy is going to the top.

Who in the world would not get his lunch eaten by Fedor? He’s looked great in the three UFC fights he’s had so far, but he can only fight the people Dana/Joe give him. As soon as he gets his contract settled he’ll fight anyone they throw at him, and I have no doubts that Vera will prove he deserves to be mentioned with the best in the world.

He’s beaten Frank Mir (post-crash), Assuerio Silver, Fabiano Scherner. Those are the only people with names that he has even fought. Frank Mir was the only one that is ever worth mentioning in my opinion, and he has fallen off since the crash (for obvious reasons). You gotta make a name for yourself before you can call out other people. He’s not ready for any of the top 10 in LHW, and doesn’t stand a chance against any of the top 10 in HW either, for sure.

He has potential though.

LOL Jake O’Brien

What would be wrong with an O’Brien/Vera fight. O’Brien might not be the most exciting UFC fighter in the world, but he could possibly but up a fight against Vera. To see how good his BJJ skills are put Vera against a world class wrestler.

UFC needs to do a Total Elimination type of deal to see who is the best fighter in the UFC. Have names like Liddell, Minotaro, Vera, Tito, Franklin, Hughes, Pierre, Sherk, Couture, Gabe Go, Anderson.

Then we can see if Vera is the best of the best.

Well lets call spades, spades here gordo can you honestly tell me Vera is a class act with no ego and it was a simple miscomunication by the fans and he was humble in stating who he wanted to fight?? Come on now gordy boy you weren’t born last night. I realize you might like this kid and I respect his POTENTIAL but really what else should I respect?? He is stating who he wants to fight yes but pointing out that he is better then opponents at a higher fighting status is pretty rididculous when you have fought a grand total of NONE of the TOP talent. I would like nothing more to see another explosive top end fighter in the LHW or HW division and Vera might be able to provide but until he does he might want to think about pretending like he has some sort of class and zip it till he lays out atleast one top fighter.

How can you say he’s too small, He’s proved he can manhandle more than one 250 pounder.
Who has he beat? Kongo, Arlovski, Werdum, Sylvia, Gonzaga, Crocop, Randy, Mir, would all DESTROY Vera….
Liddell, Rampage, Babalu, Rashad, Tito, Prolly Forrest, would all DESTROY Vera…
You guys talk like he is a top fighter, but he hasnt beat anyone… now is taking over a YEAR off. Guy has talent, dont get me wrong, but he isnt GSP the second coming for MMA fans.

You must have missed UFC 65 if you think Mir would destroy Vera. I’m not saying Vera is a top fighter ,I’m saying he is going to be (if Dana ever gives him a fight that is). To say all these guys would DESTROY Vera is not very realistic.

Well if we are calling spades, spades ,from reading this post you sure don’t have much class and you sound like a cocky prick.

So is he going to fight in light heavyweight then? He called out a lot of light heavyweights. And if he was truly the greatest he would have a belt around his waste. What a dummy.

He’d have a belt around his waist, both heavy-weight and light heavy-weight if he was given the shot for one! If ufc put him against a big name fighter he’d walk through em, but he cant back up his talking if he’s forced to fight bums everytime he fights in the cage! Brandon vera vs tim sylvia…the truth would walk through him! Love to see that!

Im not on here to talk shit or anything… brandon is a little cocky sometimes… but he is also very humble… he does contradict himself often when he speaks… I do get a little amazed that you guys dont think he has fought anyone? He has fought some solid fighters and obviously won them all… but more importatly do you think he just started fighting? Brandon was a world class wrestler… is a star pupil of Lloyd Irvin in BJJ… and for those who know Lloyd he is a beast.. He is star pupil in Muay Thai under Rob Kaman… for those who know Rob… he is a beast… and brandon is well versed in other disciplines like Abu Dhabi… Also Brandon trained at the olympic training center with the likes of Randy Couture… Brandon knows he a tough dude and he doesnt need a record to prove it… Do I agree with calling out people… Its not my style… But I have hung out with Brandon and thats him… He loves fighting and he respects the art of martial arts…. he is very knowledgeable and he studies all serious contenders… Obviously he has to prove it… And he might run into a loss or two.. especially at heavyweight… but i know one thing… Brandon is a beast… he might not have that super muscle build… but he is a beast… and whoever beats him will have to bring a serious A game.. because Brandon can fight standup and on the ground just a easily and his conditioning is world class, ala Tito, even though he is a little soft in the midsection… You have to factor in that he has a terrible diet right now.. so he can keep his weight up…. and he cant put on too much muscle because it will slow him down and hurt his striking… When B, eventually fights in LH.. you will see him more ripped…. these are just my opinions and i realize were all entitled to them… but im not fond of the he hasnt fought anyone argument…

Vera will wins the HW belt by mid 2008 and then get a shot at the champ QRJ most proberbly, rampage will beat hendo cause dan is best suited at 185 he was only 198 when he fought wandy at 205. As for shogun he wont get a title shot because dana will give him at least 3 fights before a title shot, and will NEVER BE CHAMP because he cant beat THE ICEMAN.

Vera is a great fighter and hasn’t left much up to the judges, but until he fights a (I hate to say) quality opponent – we don’t know how much he will capitalize on his obvious potential. I am a big fan of his – but to say he’ll destroy any of the top guys at either weight class is ridiculous, but if he needs that motivation, than more power to him.

“My advice to Mr Vera, as country star Toby Keith so elegantly put it: A little less talk and a lot more action.”

He’s working on it dude. Whenever money is involved with a sport there are going to be management issues. This is the only thing keeping him out of the ring right now. I would love to see Brandon fight again and have been eagerly anticipating his next bout. The man has some serious skills and they are only getting better. He is the #1 light heavyweight contender in my opinion.
