TUF 5 Finale: Lauzon, Maynard and others finalize card

With the last episode of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 5 in the books -- and Nate Diaz and Manny Gamburyan in the finals -- UFC.com today revealed the final fight card for the June 23 event.
And the new lightweight match ups are solid for the most part.
Here's a look:
- Brandon Melendez vs. Joe Lauzon
- Rob Emerson vs. Gray Maynard
- Andy Wang vs. Cole Miller
- Brian Geraghty vs. Matt Wiman
Of course, the main event of the evening is the rematch between the coaches of the season, BJ Penn and Jens Pulver.
In addition, Roger Huerta is set to take on UFC newcomer Doug Evans and Leonard Garcia will look to boil Allen "Monstah Lobstah" Berube.
The TUF 5 Finale will take place at The Palms Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, and air on Spike television at 9 p.m. For the complete TUF 5 Finale fight card click here.

This overall is a pretty solid card, is this a 2 or 3 hour event?
I am hoping three because I want to see Leonard, Roger, Lauzon, Manny and Penn all fight.
I wonder why Corey Hill is not on the card.

I thought Lauzon and Maynard would fight for essentially 3rd place?

The only good fight that I see is Wiman vs Geraghty. The rest seems predictable; Lauzon, Maynard, Miller.

Yeh im shocked Corey Hill isnt on the card, hes the one guy who I see just getting better and better with every fight. I woulda liked to see him vs Winman or Melendez. Maybe big Dana is saving him for a later card so he can get with a ligit camp and soak up some more coaching so he doesn’t hinder his potential with some undercard bout.

Me too. Normally that’s what happens. Unless I’m totally mistaken. If that’s the case, apologies.

Dude, what’s the deal with “monstah”? That guy got worked. He’s not going to last a minute with Leonard Garcia.

I would have rather seen Corey over Geraghty, but I will take pleasure in Huerta and Garcia destroying their opponents.

The word I heard is he was scheduled to fight but had to pull out due to a rib injury in training. I think he is training with Jens at MFS

I have a friend who worked out in Iowa wit pulver and corey hill was there.. and he dislocated a couple of ribs sparring.. so thats probably why he isnt on the card.

I would’ve like to see:
Joe Lauzon vs Gray Maynard
Rob Emerson vs Matt Wiman
Brandon Melendez vs Lenoard Gracia
Cole Miller vs Brian Geraghty
Andy Wang vs “Lobstah Monstah”

That makes sense, COrey in MFS is a wise move. They could turn him into a force at 155.

Any thing can happen, but this card seems terribly lopsided to me.
Garcia goes three rounds smiling against Huerta and he gets to fight Berube?
Maynard v Emerson could be good, but that’s all I see.
Corey Hill would not get NSAC approved to fight anyone at this level when he’s officially 0-0. That’s how ppl get seriously hurt. It’s one thing on a show where the NSAC didnt do prior approval, but not in the big show.
I like LIGuy’s match ups.

Waaaaaaaaaaaaah, why is Berube on the card? Waaaaaaaaah!
Emerson should be on the card over Berube…. waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!
Oh wait…
MTU, it is lopsided. If watching TUF hasnt taught you the lesson. The UFC is trying to develope these fighters into top quality fighters that the common Hooters going beer guzzling MMA 28 year old fan will recognize their names, for both the good and bad fighters. Making the weaker fighters look weak while making the slightly stronger fighters (from the show atleast..) look well, stronger. Why else would Dana put Ed Herman against Scott Smith (who I think hasnt even won in the Octagon?) against each other @ 72? Not only that, but by keeping these weaker Tuf fighters around for their measley $4-10g a fight… they kinda retain good $$.
How long has it taken Rashad to fight someone with talent passed Bonnar?
Bisping has faught no one…
Griffin’s toughest opponent was Tito and Jardine…
Shit, Im surprised we dont see Ross Pointon more often!

It’s one thing on a show where the NSAC didnt do prior approval, but not in the big show.
Because all the fights on the show are ‘exhibitions’, hence why results dont have to be posted immediately after the fight has concluded, and dont count as a win.

Thanks UFC for letting me know about the back to back episodes. UFC is worse than the WWE in this regard.

This is Dana’s punishment for him for instigating the backyard brawl. The two who actually fought are permanently banned; Lobstah will get his clock cleaned and then won’t be brought back. At least he’ll get a little payday out of it.

What do you mean unless you’re mistaken? You said it was posted on UFC.com. You said the same thing about the match-ups last night. You knew because it was posted on UFC.com. I couldn’t find it on UFC.com

I didnt tape the second episode so I cant watch the Diaz Maynard fight…. sucks real bad

I think the Melendez – Lauzon fight might be good…
Melendez is strong… has good hands. I didnt watch the fight he lost on the show… but just having a bit of offense and strength might throw Lauzon off a bit.

Dana should have had these as the semi finals :
Gray versus Manny and Nate versus Joe
It would have placed the two more physically strong guys in a battle of who can out muscle the other and I think Gray would have come out on top. Being that he is the better wrestler and physcially much stronger so Manny’s arm bar submission stuff wouldnt be a real factor.
The second obvious fight would have been Nate versus Joe in a battle of the taller skinner dudes, who have well rounded skills. I think this one would have been two close to call.
In the end the best of the four fighters in Gray Maynard will not be the ultimate fighter champion based on the style of figheter he fought that night.

well if you look at the passed prelims from tuf..the guys that win, stay for a couple of fights in the ufc, the guys that lose are gone..so if there is somebody they want in the ufc, the arent going to risk their chances
TUF 1
Swick vs Schohnaur
Leben vs. Strange brew
Kos Vs. Stanford
Southworth Vs. Hogar (this one backfired)

I think Emerson/Maynard and Wiman/Geraghty could both be good, in addition to lauzon/melendez. Too bad we won’t see them (probably). I was thinking, Corey Hill might have originally been scheduled to fight Monstah but had to pull out due to injury, so Dana brought in Garcia to fight him right around the time he cancelled the Marlon/Noah fight (which maybe was replaced by the Sword/Leites fight?)

ATTENTION!
This is why Corey Hill is not on the fight card.

The UFC should be careful with the TUF finales in the future. It’s starting to smell like the final concert at band camp….everyone gets a solo.
Seriously, it’s obvious that Wang is the replacement for Hill. There is no other reason to have that guy on the card. Oh well, at least the pre-fight interview could be interesting if he talks about taking arrows in the back and walking out with his head held high in his hands, or something like that.

gray will be good but, as we saw, is not there yet. nate took a beating but had him in trouble several times

Ok, here’s a little contest: the first one to find Diaz in this picture gets a one-week no-hassle-pass from me, which will protect you from my bashing, if you post stupid comments. :D

I guess the Diaz brothers are really born to fight. :P

I don’t get it….Dana locks these guys up in a big house who have no other common interest other than they enjoy fighting more than anything else- with some food, booze, maybe a few Playboys and some cameras and then has a hissy the when the jarhead and the brain damaged king of the street fighters get drunk and FIGHT!!! DUH…and where was all of Dana’s outrage and disappoint Season 1 when big baby Crippler got shit-faced, cried and punched out the house, behaving a bit below the lofty professional level Dana seems to feel they should maintain whilst pounding TUF supplied Cuervo?? And despite the fact Leban was a huge embarassment as a human being on TUF 1 he’s been given way too many chances in the Octagon, I appreciate what Dana has done for the sport but his soapboxing is a bit hard to take at times

I think Manny could be beat with flying knees or Muay Tai clinch kneelifts. His head is the perfect height for that.

I think they all should be decent fights at least im hoping. I dont know why but i want to see Pulver beat Penn. Always been partial to MFS fighters even if they can be arrogant d*cks sometimes. But if Penn wins i wont be totally dissappointed.

I agree… they all do look like decent fights. On the other hand I’m actually looking forward to Nate winning Manuel. There is so much hype over that fight. I was looking at another blog and this one dude was promoting a website sponsored by Burger King. You choose who you think is going to win the fight and then you are entered in a sweepstakes to win tickets to the UFC live fight. Definitely take a look:
