WEC: Jens Pulver vs. Urijah Faber?

Pulver to WEC

MMA on Tap is reporting that Jens Pulver (21-7-1) will be ditching the UFC after his showdown with BJ Penn at The Ultimate Finale 5 according to his manager Monte Cox.

While no official announcement has been made, "Little Evil" is expected to join the featherweight ranks of the WEC and possibly face the "California Kid" Urijah Faber (19-1).

While it's just speculation at this point, this is a fantastic match-up but one that I believe hinges on the outcome of his fight with Penn.

A win would most likely put him at the top of the WEC food chain - and against Faber. But a loss, even to someone as gifted as "The Prodigy", may reinforce the belief held by some critics that he's on a downward trend as evidenced by his KO loss to Joe Lauzon.

Whether he faces Faber or not, he's guaranteed to make some noise in the featherweight division.

I know some fans look down on the WEC as some sort of minor leagues for the UFC. The same WEC that recently signed Paulo Filho and now possibly Jens Pulver.

There's nothing minor about that.

What, he working off the P principal here? Prior Proper Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance? He know’s he can’t win I believe. It’s why he’s been saying how muched he liked BJ lately. He’s not ready to retire yet.

won’t he get less money for that fight

Jens’s always been a natural 145 so he ain’t runnin from no one just movin down to his correct weight class.

He’s had a great career but then Lauzon jumped him. Not sure what happened there. The fight maker didn’t realize how good Lauzon was and Jens didn’t know either. They should have given him another starter fight before BJ.

Right on the money. Many people might have seen guys like Urijah Faber, Gomi, Sakurai or Melendez yet and think that switching to the WEC might be a big stepback for Pulver, but a win over Faber would put him immediately right up there with the Top5 of the world again.

I’m very excited that the UFC brought back the light weightclass, but recent additions to the UFC roster have been too (Light)Heavyweight-centered. A very technical and good fight to watch is the latest Faber fight btw: Faber-Farrar at WEC28. You can watch it here: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x26sv8_urijahfabervschancefarrar

I’ll bet he doesn’t want to Contend for the same belt as Fisher.

by Hoodlum on Jun 9, 2007 8:50 AM EDT reply actions

I dont think it has anything to do with Fisher, I think it has everything to do with Jens being 145, and Jens getting… well older. Guy isnt gonna be around for much longer.

What, he working off the P principal here? Prior Proper Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance? He know’s he can’t win I believe. It’s why he’s been saying how muched he liked BJ lately.

I seriously dont know what you’re talking about here. He knows he cant win, but yet he already did win against BJ Penn? Aside from getting pummeled by Lauzon, what has this guy done to deserve so much animosity? I know… cause he is such a dick and an idiot on TUF… no, thats BJ. Oh I know… cause he talks so much shit… No… Great educated assumption there.

Lets see, that was Pulvers 15th fight while it was like Penns 3rd. Look at what they have done and who they have faced since. Caol Uno: Penn beat him Pulver lost to him. Takanori Gomi:Penn beat him and Pulver lost to him. Din Thomas: Penn beat him and Pulver lost to him. In fact since his win in 02 over Penn what has Pulver done? Tell me One notable person Pulver has beat in five years. I didn’t even bring up his one punch ko loss to Lauzon. Yeah he really deserved to be a coach on the show, had nothing to do with BJ.

by Tommy on Jun 9, 2007 11:08 AM EDT reply actions

And I like Pulver actually. I must admit I like his attitude on the show but I wonder sometimes if thats really him, he seems to catch himself alot. While BJ lets it all hang out. Yet I can’t help but think he is behind the scenes alot lately. You betting on Pulver then Luppers?

by Tommy on Jun 9, 2007 12:02 PM EDT reply actions

You cannot minimize the power and ability of Joe Lauzon. Don’t blame Jens. Jens is just the first of many in the path of destruction. Faber vs Lauzon, now that’s a match for the ages.
I also like Lauzon vs Hermes Franca, that would be awesome. I think Jens only has a puncher’s chance against Faber. That is not a knock on Jens but a compliment to Uriah Faber.

by MrFye on Jun 9, 2007 12:56 PM EDT reply actions

I think this is a great move. Not to say Pulver can’t hang but realisticly I don’t see him beating BJ and tht California Kid needs to be tested. he looked a little cocky and from what I understand he’s been Champ for awhile now. Pulver will push him and show us MMA fans if this kid could make the jump and if 145 has a future in the sport

i watched the most recent WEC on tv with urijah vs chance. urijah looked pretty bad ass i would love to see him fight jens

This is the fight I’ve been dreaming of since I first saw Faber fight! I’m so excited! Having watched both fighters multiple times, I can honestly say that this will be one for the ages! I’m not sure who will win.

Penn has talent… lacks desire and direction…. Pulver has the puncher’s chance, plus BJ is on a two fight losing streak. Id take Pulver, but not by much.

by Luppers on Jun 9, 2007 2:09 PM EDT reply actions

I think that WEC’s Major weight class will be it’s feather weight. While top contenders are in the Featherweight, I think that the Weights above that will be a pre or post-UFC fighting ground. I would definitely like to see that fight.

Luppers my god man you must be joking. BJ is on a two fight losing streak sure, but it was Hughes and St Pierre, and he was looking damn good in both of those fights! I love BJ’s style, he seems to have good snap on his punches, I was loving the first two rounds of his last fight with Hughes, he was beating Matt like a work horse. Anyway I see BJ winning in the first. After dazing him with punches Bj will jump on him and apply the RNC.

Now your comparing BJ’s loses to GSP and Hughes when they were both great fights as well? I like Lauzon alot but he is still really raw and still one punched Jens. BJ’s only loss by stoppage was to Hughes and he destroyed him the first two rounds. You may think he lacks desire but he really wants to hurt Pulver. In fact that’s my original point, I believe Jens is saying things to make BJ less ambitious to destroy him. ’He’s a funny extemely talented guy, I want to leave the UFC after this fight’ etc.

Faber vs Jens..a good fight.

What about J-Lau vs Din Thomas..in the works

Jens Pulver lives in the same town as me and I have to tell ya hes a class act. Everytime you see him he will stop and bs with ya, 3 weeks ago I seen him at shell with Corey Hill both were cool as hell. Bj is a horrible coach in my opinion but a awsome fighter and I dont see Jens winning. And as for Jens being cool on the show so Bj wont kill em thats garbage.

by terry on Jun 9, 2007 3:06 PM EDT reply actions

Pulver vs. Urijah would be a amazing fight, but I think Pulver would outstrike Urijah for the victory, but boy if urijah gets Jens down, Jens is in trouble, and I am a huge fan of Jens but he really is not that great on the ground.

So Jens did take in Cory Hill huh? I remember him saying on the show that he wanted him to come out and train with him. Thats cool hopefully cory will be back to go on a tear through the lightweight division

by BLOodyMEss on Jun 9, 2007 3:19 PM EDT reply actions

the ufc should have a super lw division or a featherweight or whatever division at 145 for guys like jens and garcia, i’m sure there’s a lot of dudes out there that are exciting as hell and would fit perfect in a smaller weight class like that instead of fighting guys at 155 that are really 170…

Man why are all these guys going to the WEC for stay in the big leagues.

We will see on the 23rd…

I dont care how big Corey is, or how big his game gets… he wont ‘tear’ through the likes of Stevenson or Sherk.

If Cory gets the right training he could be a up and coming fighter.

Im not saying he isnt going to be a great fighter, but Im saying that Stevenson and Sherk are no slouches, and wont be torn through by anyone in the UFC’s LHW division. Or Huerta for that matter…

People will jump on the BJ bandwagon when he starts tearing threw whatever division he decides, they will forget they said he sucked when he lost to hughes and GSP, and they will say he is the best, and that they thought that all along.

by The Anomaly on Jun 10, 2007 7:04 PM EDT reply actions

I think pulver shouldnt look past penn because hes gonna get beat. i think that pulver will lose against faber…..call me crazy but wait till it happens.

by ZACH on Jun 10, 2007 7:25 PM EDT reply actions

Penn is gonna kill Pulver bottom line. Then Pulver will have to leave UFC weather he wants to or not. Pulver got saved by the bell in the 2nd the first time they fought, and BJ is a world better than he used to be. It’s over dude.

by The Anomaly on Jun 10, 2007 7:28 PM EDT reply actions

I think that Pulver is trying to plan out the rest of his career from here. He is planning on losing to BJ, and then joining the WEC where he can fight at his natural weight. Unfortunately, that is the home of arguably one of the best pound for pound fighters there is in Urijah Faber. I’ve seen several of Faber’s mathes. Has this guy ever been tested before? Has he ever been rocked in a match? I don’t know many if any 145 lb fighters, so he isn’t fighting well known opponents. From what I’ve seen, Faber looks like a monster. He is lightning quick and jacked. I seen a couple 6 footers in the 145lb division which could potentially cause problems for him since Faber is only 5’6". Anyways, it is definitely a fight that I would love so see go down.

by ViolentMike on Jun 11, 2007 10:25 AM EDT reply actions

Faber is very good and the best featherweight in the US, but the best featherweight fighters are japanese and I don’t see that changing in the close future.

If you guys want to see who could destroy Pulver and Faber at 145, then take a look at SHOOTO and their FW fighters. No comparison technical-wise. Still – I am a big Faber fan and will be, just saying it like it is: there is More-Than-UFC (and WEC). ;)

Let me clear everything up right now. BJ is gonna kill Pulver, he killed Hughes, when he was fresh, he killed GSP, what makes you think he wont Pulver, a 2 fight losing streak, hardly. Lets analyze his two fight losing streak.
First, he fights for the first itme in the UFC in a while, has a bit of cage rust, so clearly his cardio wasnt on par, however, his opponent, GSP, had not lost a single ROUND in his carreer at that point, even before losing to Hughes, GSP had that round according to the Judges. What happens? BJ hands him his first descisive loss in round one, gases (his own fault i admit GSP earned it via cardio) and we know the rest.
Second loss since return to UFC. Fights the current most dominant champion there has been in UFC, handles him like he was an amatuer on the feet in round one, then on the ground in round 2, not losing a beat, and showing NO SIGNS of any gassing beyond the norm, splits a rib, and once BJ had a crazy handicap, only then did Hughes start to look like he was in the fight, than we saw what happened.
BJ PENN gassed in ONE FREAKIN FIGHT, the GSP fight. How is it he lacks desire? He goes to other organizations so he can fight in bigger more challenging weight classes. Fights peole he thinks are really good, and nothing less. BJ never had a problem with discipline and desire, but now with all this racket, he has stated he is more dedicated and ready to reach his full potential. Watch out belt holders, your in trouble. Pulver is nothing but a sacrafice. This is the begining of a run like he had when he started in UFC, that ended with defeat of Hughes, the biggest upset in history, which, looking back, wasnt even an upset.

by The Anomaly on Jun 12, 2007 12:50 AM EDT reply actions

I don’t see Pulver going to the WEC as a step down and here is why: neither PRIDE or the UFC have a 145lbs division. WEC is under the same ownership as the other and the WEC is best known for it’s 135 and 145 lbs divisions. From 155 to 205 it could be seen as a B level show, but the other 2 divisions are absent in the other 2 so there is nothing to compare and contrast.

I’d love to Faber vs Pulver, it would be a great headliner fight anywhere. Faber is a great fighter, a little too full of himself at times though, much like a younger Tito Ortiz(they’re both Cali boys…enough said). Pulver is proven commodity looking to capture another belt in a more natural weight class. Who would win???we won’t know who until it happens and that’s true with any fight. We know who is more likely to win but that’s why they fight because what’s on paper doesn’t always translate to what actually happens.

Matt Serra beating GSP, Gonzaga beating Cro Cop, O’Brien beating Herring just to name a few. I’ll close with this…may the best man win.
