TUF 5 Finale: Leonard Garcia vs. Allen Berube

allen burbe vs leonard garcia tuf 5 finale
It didn't take long to find out the opponent for Leonard Garcia at The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 5 Finale.

We passed along news just a few days ago that the lightweight would be in action at The Palms Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, on June 23 -- possibly against a contestant from this season of the mixed martial arts reality series on Spike television.

We were right ... sorta.

Allen "Crustacean Sensation" Berube got the nod, according to a report from MMAWeekly.com. Yep, Monstah Lobstah -- the Florida-based restaurateur who got choked out in round one of episode one by Cole Miller.

Here's a snip from Garcia:

"I'm very excited. Training has been going good. I took a week off after the Huerta fight [April 7th] and then got back in the gym and I've been there ever since. I'm up in Colorado right now working with Duane Ludwig on my stand-up, so I'm not swinging for the fences when I'm not supposed to."

Berube -- who was also sent home early in episode eight for instigating the fight between Marlon Sims and Noah Thomas -- will be up against his toughest opponent to date in Garcia.

Since his loss to Roger Huerta at UFC 69, Garcia has also had more time to work with super trainer Greg Jackson in New Mexico.

And the two have focused on a few areas to ensure that Garcia is successful the second time around in the Octagon.

Here's another snip:

"Now it is different, it's more spot specific. Greg finds the gaps in my game and then we work on things to put it all together. My wrestling is coming along, my takedown defense is better..."

Good luck, "Monstah."

Pathetic. I don’t think “monstah” could beat me.

Guess we will see what Berube is made of…
And how much he has improved since his lobstah impression in the ring on the first show.

Let me get this right:

SpikeTV scheduled Sims-Thomas for the TUF finale, Dana claims he didn’t noticed it for a week, calls it off because of their brawl in the house and says that they’ll never compete in the UFC.

Along with Sims and Thomas also Berube has been kicked out of the house, because he kinda called both out to fight each other or something (althou I wouldn’t mind if he was kicked out because of his poor performance and shameless plugs for his restaurant).

And now he is being punished by getting a spot on the fight card of a PPV event? Somehow the logic doesn’t add up for me. Why not Emerson or even Corey? I somehow have a feeling that this potential fight will be subject of a change (I certainly hope so).

Omg cause Emerson did so well in both his fights!
Emerson is not that good of a fighter… He like most of that TUF fighters outside of Lauzon need a lot of work.

Plus, Im pretty sure that all the Tuf fighters signed a contract giving the UFC an option to pickup the guys for more fights.

i hear that, i hope it changes too, i’d much rather see emerson vs. garcia…its weird dana would let berube fight again right away but say sims and thomas can never fight in the ufc again…

And you are saying you’d rather see Berube than Emerson or Corey? I mentioned Emerson because he’s the one fighter who doesn’t seem to have suffered any injuries during his fights, even thou they went to decision. So at least his cardio is good and he has an OK standup, if he can only get his mind right.

Corey on the other hand is a freak of nature and really improved over those couple of weeks. But what really impressed me (even thou he’s either speaking in tongues or barking like a dog) is his mental state. Not alot of fighters walk out of a loss smiling and thinking positive.

Is this confirmed by the UFC? Or will this be like Noah and Marlon?

I say we forget about matching him up against a TUF fighter. (unless we’re talking about the top 4) After his performance vs Huerta, Garcia’s certainly earned the right to challenge a REAL opponent. Setting him up with Berube is borderline disrespectful. The only rational reason I can think of for this match would be to set up an almost guaranteed win but what’s the point unless it’s a win that the fan’s can respect?

I thought Cory was a retard at first, trying to pull the ghetto dawg WOOF WOOF bit, but I get the feeling he’s just pleased as punch to be there and learn some stuff.

I’ll take Garcia…..Only seen that one fight he put up against Huerta and I was impressed with the chin. Agreat chin goes a long way. Look at Big Nog. Probably a horrible comparison but you all can make the connection. If he can take a beating and his conditioning is good the guy will just keep coming. He can throw descent hands and Berube was not impressive at all from what I saw. Would love to see Garcia get his first win in the UFC

“Even though Garcia and Huerta went toe-to-toe for most of the night, Garcia has predominantly been successful with his submission game, winning more than 75 percent of his fights via tap out.”
This from the other article. So, stand-up isn’t this guys strength?!?!? Man, Monstah is gonna get ROASTED. Garcia looks to have a solid (by solid I mean granite-like)chin, has good stand-up and seemingly a good ground game. Is Monstah going to be allowed to throw live lobsters at Garcia to even things out? Bring in a chair a-la WWE? Maybe Garcia should fight Weems and Berube at the same time to help even things out.

Earned a real opponent? his only UFC fight was a loss. I see this as a favor to Garcia by giving him the Bisbing treatment in order for him to get a win, apparently the UFC and alot of fans saw something in him but he has earned nothing in my book. Hopefully he will showcase his talent and build himself up in the ranks.

Emerson, needs work…
Corey, needs work…
Berube, guess what? Needs work.
Either way what does it really matter? Im sure we will see Corey later in the UFC or WEC, Im sure we will see Emerson seeing as Dana had a Man-crush on him (for what reason I dont know…)

I would definitely put Nate diaz up there with Joe Louzon. While Diaz needs more fights under his belt in order to get a little better, but I think the same for Louzon. If they fought right now Louzon would be the winner (probably), but I root for Diaz to win.

You seriously think any coach or training camp would put work into Berube? Wanna hear a funny thing? Berube actually called out Mayweather and said (among other stupid things) “… am I am not even one of the best fighters …”. Wow, really humble from the Bottom10 fighter with less than a year experience. No wonder some of my team mates joked around and predicated “Mayweather by triangle choke”.

All I was saying here: if they have to fill the card with TUF guys, at least take the most promising ones that won’t be tied to the finale anyway. And for me that Emerson and Corey.

Now that you mention it, I’m inclined to agree. You don’t see that often, if ever. To me, it shows that he has a healthy perspective on who he is, where he is as far as progression & confidence in the fact that he has the ability to constantly improve. A lot of people have been saying to give Corey a good year of pure training & he’ll be a force in the UFC…..I think they’re right.

Yes, EARNED a real opponent. Garcia put on a serious performance against a fighter the level of Huerta. So what he didnt win. He earned his stripes in that scrap. Outside of feeding him an easy win, I think he proved that he is ready to face more seasoned competition.

by Machine on Jun 9, 2007 3:05 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

it should have been Cole Miller, or Brandon Melendez.
But the guy who got eliminated… First?
Now he should really let Marlon and Noah fight.

I agree completely! One fighter can earn more respect in a loss than another in a win. And Garcia-Huerta was a great example for that, as was Hughes-Lytle for the negative case. While most people have been very unsatisfied by the win of Hughes, who was fighting not to lose, most people cheered for both fighters in Garcia-Huerta as they went toe2toe over the full distance.

OK let me get this straight, Huerta beat Garcia, and yes it was a good fight, so are you saying he should now get a shot at someone better than Huerta? the guy that beat him? Seems to me like they would give him someone less talented than the guy who just beat him. Berube is probably not an even match up, but no worse than what they have been feeding Bisbing or some others.

Yeah kind of think that myself three guys got punished for the incident so the should face the consequence.

Maybe having to get his ass handed to him by Garcia is his punishment.

Sounds like someone is an Emerson lover….
Emerson needs a lot of refinement, and for being a striker (claims maui to be his style according to sherdog) he definitely didnt impress me on his feet.

Berube is supposedly the best improved fighter behind the scenes. We really didnt see much from him outside of the first fight and the backyard fight. Plus I think he lost to an obviously much better fighter. I think Miller is gonna be a great fighter one day, definitely has the ground game and jujitsu, just needs more refinement standing… just like everyone on the show outside of Lauzon and maybe Grey.

As far as ‘deserving’ a fight… these guys are gonna make 4k to fight, and 4k to win. Dana is tossing both Berube and Garcia into the Octagon again, to see if they can put on a show. Not a big gamble. Will we see Corey and Emerson? Dana has a HUGE unjustified man-crush on Emerson, so yeah. Corey I think we all agree has a lot of potential, in a year he could be a solid fighter if he absorbs the innate aspects of it. Diaz… looks to have talent, but looks to have the wrong attitude to apply that talent well. His standup was HORRIBLE as we saw against Corey (who made Emerson look bad aswell..)

But yeah, Berube sucks… Emerson should have been in there. What on EARTH is the UFC thinking? God… I mean… GOD!

by Luppers on Jun 9, 2007 5:19 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

This is not the way to treat Garcia. This will not encourage other fighters outside the UFC to come if the way the UFC rewards hard working fighters is giving them left over scraps. What reward is killing Allen? NOTHING Even though Garcia lost you don’t earn the fight of the night by being a crapy fighter…those who disagree would be saying the same thing about tyson griffin who lost an amazing fight to frankie edgar. I really hope the UFC changes this and that it is just a rummor, nothing more. The only way to make things worse is to put Eang or Weems on the Card. UFC put fighters like Emerson, Miller, Wiman or Hill in that need improvement but don’t need to change professions (ie Allen Berube)
P.S. I guess there is no instigator penalty in the UFC…

by J on Jun 9, 2007 5:22 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Again I have to ask if this is stated by UFC.com because I didn’t see it, or will this end up being another make Dana look bad when he never said nothing like this and the fight doesn’t happen. It puts them in a damn if they do (cause he got kicked off) damned if they don’t. (because they now say they would) Is this rumor or UFC confirmed??

Not to say that Sinosic is top 5 himself or anything but he has fought nothing but top level comp. Check out his record. He’s good enough to filter out the real from the fake which is why he is still around. I think the point here is that Garcia made an impression against a formidable opponent & he is being rewarded with a match against a dud. Can anyone seriously think that Berube is on the same level as ANY current UFC 155er?

He is a simple West Texas kid, who loves to fight. Getting paid to do it just puts the icing on the cake for guys like us.

Monster Lobster is going to get his shell cracked.

I’m hilarious.

Anyway, Berube doesnt stand a chance in my opinion. Garcia has already shown that he can take several good punches and not falter too much and that is all Berube has got.

Garcia via some kind of submission.
