TUF 5 Finale: Roger Huerta vs. Doug Evans
Roger Huerta (17-1-1) will face Alaska Fighting Championships (AFC) Bantamweight Champion Doug Evans (2-0) at The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 5 Finale on June 23 at The Palms Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to a recent MySpace bulletin from the "Wolfpack."
Evans trains with the team, which is based in Anchorage, Alaska, in a strip mall behind Moose's Tooth pizza (no joke).
We speculated incorrectly that because Huerta was recently moved from the UFC 74 fight card to the TUF 5 Finale that he might face a contestant on this season of the reality show.
Instead, he will face yet another UFC newcomer (Jason Dent, John Halverson, Leonard Garcia).
Not much is known about Evans, other than he has plied his trade for the better part of his professional career in "The Last Frontier" state. Sherdog.com has his record at 2-0, but other sources indicate that he could be better than that (5-0).
In fact, Evans recently outpointed World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) veteran Mike Joy on all the judges scorecards at AFC 35 — a result that does not appear on his record.
Perhaps this is not the lightweight bout that most were anticipating, but the last time Huerta was matched up against a "no name" at UFC 69 (Garcia) it was the "Fight of the Night."
Hopefully, Evans brings it ... unlike Halverson.

C’mon guys, they make ‘em tough in Alaska. Didn’t you see X-Men?

I really like Huerta but the UFC is screwing him over by giving him all these no name guys. Roger should be thankful that Leonard Garcia fought his guts out because without taht fight fringe MMA viewers would have no ide athat Roger is the real deal. Someone like Din Thomas (if he hadn’t recently fought or Franky Edgar (whos fighting a no name at UFC 73) who be better for Huerta’s carrer because than he’s betten guys of increased significance. In all seriousness who’s ever heard of Doug Evans before? (wow.. everyone look I beat Doug Evans?)

Man, I really wanted to see him fight someone off that show. Plus since Huerta thought he was gonna fight in august he only has like two weeks to train now.

Doug Evans???? Are they serious? They are turning Roger Huerta into the John Fitch of the lightweight division. I wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t even televise the match…

Huerta is an awesome fighter to watch, and no matter who he faces I think it will be a great fight. I do wish UFC would just get these few fighters that have talent and let them fight, but they just keep feeding them no names.

Hasn’t Huerta earned the opportunity to fight someone who has actually fought before? A win here does absolutely nothing for Huerta, while a super-ultra-mega fluke loss would drop him way down in the rankings. I guess he can’t be too high in the rankings anyway if they keep throwing these kinds of fights at him. He’s going to kick Evans’ igloo-building, whale-eating, baby seal-clubbing ass all over the ring.

Agree about Huerta’s future in the UFC. Although I think it’s time he fights some real talent and makes a move in 155

I have seen Doug Evans fight, and the kid is pretty sick. Very technical, good stand up, heavy hands, great defense and counters and devastating kicks. The match maker at the UFC, gave him the fight for a reason.

Evans by brutal KO. This is what always happens when the UFC gets too greedy and tries to overprotect it’s talent. Of recent, Cro Cop, Jardine…

Well he better bring his Houston Alexander game against Huerta.

We all have Huerta on our top 5 lists but he must not be on Joe Silva’s.

Overprotect Talent?
UFC def, knew what they were doing with GabeGo and Cro Cop, a lot of people knew Mirko was going to have his numberdrawn and that GabeGo was going to pull off an upset. GabeGo is a great fighter, and he might be our new heavyweight champion within time.
Jardine, they did not protect him Houston Alexander is a Truck. He hits like a semi. UFC is smart, this guy could be the next Houston Alexander and upset Roger, but I don’t think that will happen because Roger is pound for pound 3 best lightweight in that division. Here is the list
1.) Sean Sherk
2.) Joe “Daddy” Stevenson
3.) Roger Huerta
4.) Hermes Franca
5.) BJ Penn
6.) KenFlo
7.) Jens Pulver
8.) Leonard Garcia
9.) Kurt Pelleringo
10.) Jorge Grugel

I think Doug is gonna take this one. You all base your opinions on never seeing this Doug kid. I have seen both and Doug has a great chance of beating Roger

BJ Penn would easily take out any 2 of those guys at teh same time.

Doug Evans has a great shot here. He was very close to making TUF 5. I think that he can beat almost every guy in that house. There is another Alaskan to watch out for who will be a rising star also, by the name of Scott McAffee. He has the best hands I’ve ever seen for 155.

I am confident everyones opinion of Doug Evans will change after the fight. I have never seen Huerta fight before, or if I have I don’t remember. I have seen Doug fight, and you could tell from his first MMA fight that he had something extra. I am not going to be bold enough to predict a victory for Doug, but I will say that Huerta will have his hands full. Whoever mentioned the short notice for Huerta can throw that excuse out the window. Doug had just as little notice, and has to deal with the logistics of getting down to Vegas from Alaska.
It is going to be an awesome fight

Huerta will take the win by K.O. or submission… he’s a well-rounded fighter and trains with the best… I wait to see them throw down..

I like how everyone is so simpleminded about Alaska, they think there is no talent up here, and have such a little concept of what Alaska is really about. Doug has trained hard for every fight, and he’s actually 6-0 with 2 belts, regardless of what the internet says. Do you stand in line and believe everything that that you read at the news stands? If so, you don’t have a clue about the real world. Grow up and get some education about Alaska and the fighters that are up here, then have an opinion once you know the facts. I know that what the internet has posted is wrong, so everyone thinks he doesn’t stand a chance, but the UFC would have never gave him this chance if they didn’t think he had some talent. Roger is a great fighter, and deserve to have tough fights, that’s why he’s fighting Doug. You’re all going to be amazed at the talent that Doug has!!

Seriously. Huerta has looked great in all his fights in the UFC. He should fight an established veteran. Bringing someone into the octagon after only 2 fights is riduculous. I know nothing about Evans, and anything can happen, but I really would like to see Huerta get tested. Fitch is another great fighter who is undefeated and practically untested in the UFC. I’m waiting for him to finally fight some great talent and destroy them. He’s ranked number 5 probably based on his record, but still, he’s faught nobody’s. He’s ready for PPV and I’m excited to see more TELEVISED matches with both him and Huerta.

Evans is a tough fighter i think he proved that since he dominated huerta for a round and a half not bad for an igloo building, whale eating baby seal clubber
