WEC: Faber vs. Farrar headlines event tonight live on VERSUS

Urijah Faber will put his featherweight title on the line tonight against Chance Farrar during the World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) event at "The Joint" in the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, at 9 p.m. on the "Versus" cable channel.

The UFC has dedicated a great deal of coverage on its Web site regarding the event in the last few weeks. That's because Zuffa -- the parent company of the UFC -- owns the WEC.

I've received a good amount of emails from confused readers who probably don't know the entire history behind the close relationship between the promotions.

Accordingly, I felt a quick post was in order to clear up the situation. In addition, I want to remind our readers -- many of whom are mixed martial arts fans, not just UFC fans -- that there are some solid (and FREE) fights on this evening.

Despite remarks from the UFC that state otherwise, the WEC is viewed by many as a "feeder or farm" system for the UFC.

And with former UFC veterans such as Alex Karalexis, John Alessio and Brock Larson on this fight card alone -- alongside up and coming talent -- it seems rather apparent.

Regardless, tonight should be a solid night of action on the "Versus" network.

Here's a taste of what to expect:

Check local cable listings for the "Versus" channel and WEC showtimes in your area.

The farm system idea seems to be true in some respects, but I’ve also read that the WEC is supposed to be more geared towards the lower weights (they have the 135 and 145 weight classes, which the UFC obviously doesn’t). Additionally, it appears that Filho is going to the WEC (since he and Anderson Silva are friends and in the same weight class).

So in reality it’s probably a hodgepodge of top notch little guys (45/35’s), a feeder system, and a refuge for people who don’t want to eventually contend for the UFC belt (and probably some other stuff I’m leaving out).

Urijah is the truth. I’d like to see him move up to 155 & come to the UFC for a run at the tite. Sherk vs Urijah anyone? How about Tyson vs Urijah II?

It was a good showing of MMA. I thought that Urijah was a little cocky, but all in all seemed to be a good showing.

Good show last night. I’d love to see Urijah in the UFC, but he would have to go up 10 pounds to meet someone who was coming down 10-15 pounds. Big disadvantage. Still, that was some sweet grappling and wrestling in his match.

It was a good showing from th WEC. Brock Larson is a beast. Im not feeling Mir as color, my opinion.

Man I have to agree with you completely on that one. I have seen that Urijah guy fight a few times now and he is monster. He just finds a way to win every single time. Last nights fight he knew his oppontent was good on the ground and had good stand up as well, so he was just patient and got the rear naked choke. His last two fights he knew the other fighters werent as good as him so he just bum rushed them and killed them off in the first round. This kid is good, I would love to see him put on an extra 10 lbs of muscle and see what he can do in the 155 lb class.

Oh btw, I thought I heard at the top of the show they announced Frank Mir as one of their champions does anyone know if there is any truth to that or was I just hearing what I wanted to hear? lol

“The Ghost”
I heard the Frank Mir champion comment as well…..news to me.

Does any one know when we will see Urijah Faber in the UFC? I know he was in King of the Cage for a while before he jumped to WEC. The kid sure got some talent.

by Jo on Jun 4, 2007 12:03 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Jo, yeah it caught me completely off gaurd cause as far as I knew Mir wasnt even fighting outside of the UFC.

I think it could be awhile until we see Faber in the UFC, after watching his couple of fights, I did some research and looking in and it seems he is pretty content to be fighting in that Featherweight division and be the champion of it and wants to fight everyone in that division that he can. So until that divison dries up and it becomes boring for him, I do not think we will see him in the UFC. That is of course unless the UFC comes to him and offers him a nice little contract!

Dude, it’s “Mano A Mano”, not “Mano Y Mano”. Mano a mano = hand to hand, as in combat. Mano y mano = hand AND hand, as in, I don’t know, maybe you’re gonna go hold hands with a dude? Before you blow each other?

Okay this will offically count as close to my 5th or so post on Urijah Faber today (i think that puts me as a fan boy or nut hugger lol) but if your first time see Faber was last night there is an awesome clip on you tube, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xeTwoArV2ME , of a bunch of his fights between ’03 and ’05. Check it out whether you are a new or old fan of Faber or you just want to see some awesome 144 lb action!

I askes this question before and was ignored. I seen the wec is now fighting 145ers or featherweights. When will the UFC start this weightclass. If you notice even on the TUF show in now says lightweights are 146 to 155 indicating the start of a 145lb class soon no?
