UFC Quick Quote: Pulver thinks Penn is a funny guy

bj penn is funny

"How could you disrespect him [BJ Penn]? The first fight was a war. It could have ended in the second round when he had me in an arm bar. It could have gone either way. On a personal level, I'd love to get to know the guy. But when people ask you after the fight, 'would you fight him again and how would you like the fight to go?' Well then you talk about what you want to accomplish in the fight. If I got to design the fight, yeah I'd say a knockout. Get him with the first three punches, boom-boom-boom. On the competitive side, yeah I want to beat him, knock him out. But I never disrespected anyone I've fought. That's what hurt me so much going in the show; he did that all the time to me. When this fight is over, I'll train with the guy. But yes, I'm going to tell you that I'm going to beat you into the ground. I want to beat anyone I fight into the ground. But I never talked about him as a person. Do I think if he and I met on the street that we'd come to blows? No. Maybe after this show but not after the fight. Ask me about BJ the person and I'll tell you that the guy cracks me up. Even watching the show he's been cracking me up. He's a funny guy."

-- Former UFC lightweight champion Jens Pulver tells InsideFighting.com that the animosity between him and BJ Penn -- who is the opposing coach on this season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) -- is maybe not all it's cracked up to be despite its appearance. The two will rematch at the TUF 5 Finale on June 23 to settle their feud once and for all.

thsi is pretty cool, ive seen these guys buddying around backstage at one of the older ufcs talking about how much they respect eachother…jens seems like a classy dude

I’m sure alot of the fights are over hyped to get the fans foaming at the mouths to see all the talk backed up. Also, we’ve learned from previous reality shows that the editing can twist and turn anyones’s true persona.

Was it the last fight night that these two were interviewed and you could tell they just couldnt stand one another?

I think BJ has more anger about Jens—seems like Jens is doing a little damage control here. BJ has that Hawaiian pride thing going and I think he feels disrespected big time.

Even on the show you can tell BJ doesn’t like Jens — just last night he talked again about retiring him.

Penn is going to submit Pulver at the fianle and then go on to become UFC champ. This is his bounce back year…….mark these words.

Oh and BJ Penn is a very funny dude….just his laugh alone makes me laugh.

by SirMixaLot on Jun 1, 2007 12:35 PM EDT reply actions

Just had a great laugh. I saw the headline and I started thinking about the Joe Pesci scene in Goodfellas but with BJ and Jens. “Your a funny guy.” “Do I amuse you?”

I dont need “bad blood” to enjoy a fight, thats what I loved about Pride, they rarely had fueds.

I respect both of them as fighter’s and always liked BJ’s personna..but TUF show, showed me how cool Jen’s is..Not talking about the coaching, fighting..him just chillin as a cool dude..that would pretty funny though Jen’s & BJ combine forces..I don’t see it ever really happening, but it’s a funny thought.

i so don’t want to like Penn, but hearing Pulver talk like that about him makes me wonder… maybe he isn’t as big an ass as i originally thought he was. i am gonna have to track down some interviews and see…

Honestly, the season of TUF has showed me alot of reasons to respect Jens, and a lot of reasons why BJ has the slacker – low work load rep that he does. Jens has been busting ass, granted half the time the shit that comes outa his mouth makes you scratch your head… but the guy is coaching these kids about as well as they can be coached. Not sure about BJ’s squad…

BJ’s 3 ‘guys’ that are even still on the show are the 3 I picked to place in the last 4 along with Diaz. Wieman is a BEAST, as is gray, and Lauzon can beat anyone. But its got nothing to do with who has more people in the semis… BJ is just a lazy coach. Did you not hear Dana when they were conversing before BJ blamed it on Andy, I guess I was the only one that heard Dana say ‘Ive heard stories… these guys not working hard, not doing cardio?’ Outside of Melendez, you havent had any type of issues with training on the Pulver side, everytime you see shots of that team training, they are all putting in hard work, and Jens is right there with them.

But it must be me…. Or is someone a BJ Fan?

by Luppers on Jun 1, 2007 1:59 PM EDT reply actions

Is it just me or out of all the guys over at the Miltech camp, Jens is the most respetful, knows when he was beaten and can admit it, and best of all that I have seen he does not put anyone down or diserspect anyone. I think Hughes could learn a lot from Pulver… OMFG I cant believe I just said that. (Btw I mean in terms of being a good person not so much on the “in the cage” side)

jens is a class act and a wonderfull man due to his respect to women and children.
like the ancient chinese warrior Li Kui once said “to hate ones opponent is to hate ones self,to love ones opponent is to love ones self, one must not hate for hate is naughty, smell the essense of ones opponent and you too must smell as he does,if ones opponent leaps, one must leap higher,if ones opponent runs, one must run faster, one must match his opponent in every single way he he.”

Oh I almost forgot how much of a class act a BJ is ha ha ha ha

Very few MFS fighters have I ever respected. J Horn, Jens, and McFed are about it. I dont even see Horn listed on the website anymore, so only 2 left.

Pulver seems like a decent guy. I mean, you pretty much had to assume that some of the trash talking was marketing.

Besides his upcoming match, with Penn—which I look forward to seeing—I am excited to see this guy fighting in the UFC. The only fights I have really seen him in, that stick out in my mind, are the ass whoopings that Gomi and Sakurai put on him. I’m sure he will at least hover around the top 5 or so.

Hmm good question. Not listed on the MFS site, and nothing on Sherdog. Mania? Jesse?

by MoreThanUFC on Jun 1, 2007 3:08 PM EDT reply actions

I had the impression most people on this board hated Jens but most of these posts go the other way. He seems like a decent dude. He was the 155 lb champ at one time so its not like he really has to prove himself.

I don’t know any of these fighters personally but my guess is very few of them actually have these “bad blood” feuds. I’m sure there is more mutual respect than anything and the feuds and hate are create to sell tickets.

jens definitely sucked at picking… corey was his first pick?
melendez had a shot to go a 3rd round with gray… BJ just has way more talent. even emerson might have done more had he been on jens team

id rather be coached by pulver with diaz there to teach me some BJJ

Garcia is a Greg Jackson fighter, so I don’t think Huerta is in NM unless he joined since UFC:69. I’m not sure where he is training, but was with MFS. I will view the 69 tonite and look at his corner.

Its nice to see that after the fight these guys can become good friends unless Dana want them to fight again.

I read an article that said Huerta was training with Menne. Not for sure how old it was or if he has moved on.

jens can say whatever he wants to, but from what i’ve seen bj has some hate towards that dude and i don’t think them being friends after the fight is an option…as far as being lazy, listen to jens’ interview on ufc.com about how he has a hard time finding motivation to train, he sounds like the lazy one to me, he’s done a good job of coaching this season though with obviously less talent, but i think bj’s done a good job also, he’s just had some guys not listen to him a couple of times, like wang trying to stand with melendez, gabe not taking his weight seriously, emerson not pushing the action against hill, and he almost lost gray to over training because without that choke melendez probably would have won that fight in the 3rd, i don’t think bj has shown any reason on this show to call him lazy, maybe he has in the past, but not on this show, i think both coaches have done a nice job…

by tha spida on Jun 1, 2007 11:17 PM EDT reply actions

and bj is going to beat jens quickly at the finale, i don’t think it will get past the 1st but if it does then it’ll be over in the 2nd, probably a (T)KO, but maybe a submission, either way jens is in trouble…

To quote the Master himself, Don Frye, if you can’t be friends after a war like that, you aren’t a man.
Spida, I love ya man, but get on a mat sometime. It’s amazing how you can feel about another man after kicking his ass, or him kicking yours.

Couldnt agree more. After you brawl with someone, especially in a controlled enviroment, alot of respect is gained. And if you dont gain any, you are a petty selfish person. Throughout the years of wrestling, hockey, boxing, jujitsu… got in a lot of scuffles, gained a lot of respect for people, hopefully gained alot to. But some people are just not going to change no matter how hard you beat on them – or they beat on you.

by Luppers on Jun 2, 2007 7:49 AM EDT reply actions

i’m just saying, gaining respect or not, i don’t think bj wants to be jens’ friend, i’m not sure if that has much to do with me getting on a mat, or if i can just see it in his eyes and actions that he doesn’t like the guy, you can have respect for people that aren’t your friends, also, i think this is gonna be a one sided fight, so i’m not sure how much respect bj is gonna gain for jens anyway…

by tha spida on Jun 2, 2007 11:27 AM EDT reply actions

If BJ pushes himself as hard as he pushes his fighters, its not gonna be one sided. Jens has already beat BJ once, why is everyone cashing him out already? Oh… cause its the ‘prodigy!’ I got it!

by Luppers on Jun 2, 2007 1:08 PM EDT reply actions

jens ain’t the same fighter he was back then, he’s lost to way weaker fighters than bj penn since then and he’s not ready for bj this time, its just my opinion, but i think bj is gonna beat him easily…

Jens is a class act. I love how down to earth he is. I think B.J. will win with a submission though. He is a better fighter. It should be a great couple of fights that night. I can’t wait.

ok luppers i have read a few of your comments and i have to say your full of crap dude. for one about the coaching what are you going to do when you have crappy fighters. the only fighters that BJ had where lauzon that matt dude and gray. all the other fighters where slackers and in my opinion just plane out had no skill at all. now you see that his fighters that wanted it the most and gave him there all are in the simi finals. well exept for matt right now but manny is a real good fighter as well so that will be a good fight. now as far as BJ and Jens go i think BJ will tare him up. Last time it was a Braw. i think Jens was also luckey time was on his side that night cause it would have been all over if the time haddent ran out in the second period. that arm bar was deeeeeeeep. so you should think about the facts before you comment again brother.

I get punched in the face by alot of guys when i train and almost had my ankle snapped doing ground work and i felt no hate towards anyone, so there always room for friendship.

I wonder how much Jens is really gonna like and respect BJ if Penn really breaks one of Pulvers limbs off. Bet he wont find BJ ‘a funny guy’ then.
