UFC Quick Quote: UFC 71 Ultimate Embarrassment

UFC 71 Rampage Jackson light heavyweight champion

"Although UFC has been big for years, it's hard to deny the fact that the biggest brand in mixed martial arts was enjoying its pinnacle this weekend with the mainstream media publications like ESPN The Mag and Sports Illustrated giving MMA the cover in recent weeks.

But I think the sport, being called the replacement to boxing, laid a big egg on Saturday night as its champion Chuck Liddell went down in 1 minute and 53 seconds to Quinton Jackson on Saturday night. And that wasn't even the shortest fight of the night. Some guy named Houston Alexander knocked out his opponent Keith Jardine in 48 seconds.

If I were a first time UFC consumer who bought Pay-Per-View for $39.95 and saw this happen, I'd never order UFC again. Some choose to see it differently, believing that Jackson -- nicknamed the'Rampage' -- is more marketable and has a better personality than Liddell. That makes the victory at this point in the sport's development even more important."

-- CNBC.com columnist and UFC critic Darren Rovell has some choice words for the main event this past weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada. Feel free to share your thoughts directly with him at SportsBiz@cnbc.com (thanks to FightOpinion.com for the heads up).

He left out Sean Salmon tapping in 53 seconds. What the hell is his point?

Anyone remember Tyson/Spinks? There’s 91 seconds of my life I would love to have back.

Yeah Tyson used to know people out in like 30 seconds. And we had to pay 59.99 for that crap. Thats also with no undercards, undercards in boxing are jokes. Undercards in the UFC are way better… example: Houston Alexander.

If there is anything that can be ascertained from reading articles this weekend: people are stupid, and aren’t hesitant about displaying it.

I really wouldn’t worry about the Piece of crap work we just read. We all know that a fight can end in 14 sec even 7 sec..Thats why this sport is so exciting. We got the best trained M.M.A. fighter’s in the world in the UFC and that will pay nice over the next while. By then M.M.A. will have established a nice place in the history of sports. To know worrys, we all get to see the best fight’s take place, and watch this sport grow so fast it will even get the not so convinced to watch this Sport of M.M.A.

Thx for making this sport more recognized Zuffa!. Hope you can take this sport further than any other sport out there!…

Serious, this is simply not true. People would pay to see a hard core knockout. Like the other arcticle said, would rather see a 10 second awsome knockout then a 5 round boring dance.

I swear to anything I remember a couple fights with Tyson I went to use the restroom before the fight started and by the time I got back the fight was over. No replay or dvr and out 50 bucks. I was a poor kid that would scrounge for the money and still never hated boxing for it. Just the other guys chin. If this sucked what was the Mayweather fight? I had several friends order it and tell me how exciting it was and that they would get it next time I told them and their boxing fans! I would have like the main event to go farther but I also would have liked to see Chuck win. How did Rampage say it? “You don’t always get what you want?”

by Tommy on May 30, 2007 1:17 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Fans want to see great fights and great KOs and subs more than anything. They may have booed Rampage because many expected Chuck to win, but they will be cheering Rampage as soon as he walks into the cage for his next fight.

“Upsets” in fights are not the enemy of MMA’s success. Boring fights are the enemy of MMA, and there weren’t any boring fights in UFC 71.

This is a non-story because both Chuck and Rampage were promoted for this fight. Rampage did a TON of interviews for a lot of major media outlets. Obviously, only one guy can be the poster boy, and Chuck was the reigning champion. Chuck losing the fight doesn’t imply that anything was amiss with the promotion. It just means that MMA is a dynamic, unpredictable sport.

Obviously not a fan of combat sports, and very ignorant. You can’t always have a Cro Cop/Fedor War that spans the length of the match, and even then a lot of distance fights end up dragging on.

how about the tyson PPV that dident even take place. i forgot who it was but the white guy forfit before the match? refunds there? idk but this is a true combat sport. who wants it to go to the judges? no one. thats everyones fascination with the sport.. what everyone looks foward to. the grand knockout. so lick weiners if ur going to dis the sport for what its about.

I would rather see Houston Alexander knock out Keith Jardine in 50 seconds, than see Oscar De La Hoya and Mayweather prance around the ring for 12 rounds and not even break a sweat. Boxing is going to take a back seat to MMA whether people like it or not.

Keep giving Karo Parisyan fights and we will always have 3 rounds of fun…

I confess I was disappointed with the way most of the fights turned out. Alexander, Martin, Jackson all settled it quickly. Starnes-Leben was very close but lacked excitement somehow. Karo-Burkman was the fight of the night! They did steal the show as promised even though Karo pretty much dominated.

After Rampage’s quick KO- when they suddenly had time to fill- they chose to show Gouveia-Murillo. That was one of the better ones?? I guess it was just bad luck all around that the undercard fights weren’t all that hot either: Salmon fished out… and that other dude broke his leg or something.

The fight card looked good going into UFC 71. It was just a bad night and there’s not much they can do about it except put a yukele in Joe Rogan’s hands and let him fill out the last 20 minutes. I’d rather watch that than Starnes-Leben again.

Did you see Starnes-Leben? How about Salaverry-Martin? And for that matter the main event in no way matched the anticipation. Not just because “Chuck lost- boo hoo” but okay, Liddell-Sobral was the same. They just ended too quickly which is disappointing.

by Mamas Boy on May 30, 2007 7:26 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Tyson-Spinks…My dad and I went to The Meadowlands Raceway and he paid 54.99 each.

Anyway, more ppl that I come in contact with saw 71 on ppv than ppl saw 70 on Spike. Was 71 “good” or “bad” for the UFC? Well, it’s a turning point for all of us. Does the casual fan now turn away? Or do we, the hardcore fans drag them kicking and screaming into the reality of MMA? That is why the internet is so great, if these ppl like it they can come online and learn about it. If their fanship hinged on Chuck Liddell, then they werent fans to begin with, they were the followers of a cult of personality. Let’em walk.

But the critics have valid points regarding paying $40 for a night of mostly quick fights. Then why dont we adopt the Pride practice, AND SHOW EVERY FIGHT!!!!

by MoreThanUFC on May 30, 2007 8:04 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I watched it at a bar with mostly casual fans, and the place absolutely went nuts when Chuck was knocked out. A knockout is like a long touchdown pass, or a sack, or a grand slam or a half-court shot; it is what people want to see, whether it is early or not.

(Saying what the common fan wants to see, I enjoy a sub or a well-fought decision as well).

I know a lot of you guys hate PTI, but Mike Wilbon was sticking up for 71 yesterday, saying that quick knockouts also generate more excitement than disappointment. He also pointed out the hyprocrisy of boxing supporters idolizing guys like Louis, Hearns, Foreman and Tyson for their punching power while trying to act like quick knockouts are bad in MMA.

UFC 71 was crazy..except for Kalib’s fight every fight I saw got me out of my seat more than once. If you have only 3 fights on a card and 3 first round KO’s..than yeah that’s not good, but when you have 7 or 8 fights some going the distance and others finish by KO or submission in the 1st or 2nd..that’s a pretty damn good show in my eyes.

12 rounds of boxing and no blood is worse than a 48 second knockout. This guy is about as dumb as they come. This is mma not dancing w/ gloves on.

I thought every fight sat. night was bad ass considering there were ko’s..all boxing has to offer is two guys carefully tapping each other for 10 sometimes 12 rounds..

Just another typical old boxing fart who cannot comprehend that boxing is a huge scam a la Bob Arum and Don King. The best fighters never fight one another and if they do its built up over a 4 year period while the fighters have the “tune-up” fights. Why havent we seen Roy Jones Jr. vs. Bernard Hopkins some 4 years ago ? Oh thats right because the two selfish fucks couldnt decide who should get the greater percentage of the purse. Give me a break!!!! Why didnt we see an immediate re match when Winky Wright was robbed of a decision against Jermaine Taylor? Because there is no money in that because we need to promote that fight and build it up and perhaps it will occur in 2009. Boxing is old and tired and if any columnist or promotor like Lou DiBella has an issue with that Id be happy to put them on their ass.

I think chuck lost that fight because he thought it was gonna be easy and he was gonna KO Rampage in the first round but the oppisite hapined ha ah,I believe Chuck needed this to happen as did Crocop and I still believe in them both and they are still my favourite fighters, all those KOs you score do go to your head and inevitably somthing like this has to happen to wake you up,gettin put to sleep every once in a while can actualy wake you up when you most need it.
I would like to thank Rampage and Gonzaga for doing my boys a favour coz either one of them I WOULD NOT like to be the guy they fight next.

also Roy Jones Jr. vs Tarver 2….this shit isnt scripted…this must be one of those guys who thought that the Delahoya mayweather fight was good just becuase it lasted an hour and a half….anyways, i thought that 71 was a good event..i feel like it was worth the money..it sucks that chuck lost liked that, but oh well, shit happens…the sport is unpredictable and thats why its worth paying 40 bucks..so you can see stuff happen live in front of you….

Rovell is a clown. Barring world class creativity, this looks like the last stand in the argument against MMA. For true fans of MMA, UFC did nothing less than brutally expose who are the better fighters and excellent defense is of paramount importance. Rampage won because he is the better fighter. He looked sharp. He cut off the ring. He threw classic, controlled punches. He was never out of control. He could pull back at any given time. He successfully defended against the tiny four ounce gloves. Most importantly, he defended himself against Chuck’s amazing power. Thus, he proved that he is the better fighter and good defense is as important as punching power.

Chuck and Chris Leben show the same defense: Keep your stand up guard open to lure in a striker and counter strike with more power. That is not defense, and both were exposed. Actually Leben has been repeatedly exposed as a no talent hack.

The rest of UFC 71 proved as much, but in a less convincing manner. Karo showed some improved defense. He still needs a lot of work and conditioning. Din Thomas showed amazing ability to defend against a fast, fast opponent. However, the rest of the card proved the necessity for defense by exposing many fighter’s lack of it. Instead they over-relied on punching power. I do not think that Houston Alexander is a better fighter as much as I believe Keith Jardine was exposed as a one trick pony. He only strikes hard. He does not even strike that controllingly. He flails a lot. If fighters do not employ a strategy and defense like Rampage, they are one lucky punch away from defeat. For example, I can think of no better example than the punch Tim Sylvia landed with his eyes closed on Arlovski.

These important pieces of the UFC keep the truth of fighters brutally exposed, and that is why I will continue to buy more and more UFC pay per views.

I watched this one at a bar instead of ppv. I’m totally kicking myself! I wish I had it on tape so I could watch it again. This card wasn’t stacked with superstars, but this was the best since Liddel ortiz! The fact that a couple fights were over quick was super exciting…. people in the bar were going crazy for the Houston Alexander ko of Jardine, and for Jackson!

Although UFC has been big for years, it’s hard to deny the fact that the biggest brand in mixed martial arts was enjoying its pinnacle

Sorry Darren Rovell, I disagree with your statement that the UFC is in its “Pinnacle”. This sport will only get bigger from here that I can promise. I’m offended Darren would even say “Embarrassment” What the UFC delivered this weekend was Exciting, Enjoyable and for most of the casual viewers unpredictable. The fights this weekend show cased why MMA is far more superior to other combat sports, the fans saw submissions mixed with world class wrestling and grappling skills and lets not forget those devastating K.O’s. That there is worth the $39.99, there you go $39.99 for non stop action. Gone are the days were the public are going to be hyped up and duped for months on end for a boxing match only to get 12 rounds of 80 jabs each and about a minute and a half of holding each other, WOW I can get all that for $50-$60 bucks, now that’s an “Embarrassment” ! Granted there are some great fights scattered here and there, but those are few and far between. Combat sports fans have proven they will continue to pay the high PPV prices for fights as long as there is the promise of entertainment is there, unfortunately more time than not they fall flat and a promise is all they paid for. I think Darren has underestimated the intelligence of the combat sports fan. I think Darren and the rest of the world outside of the MMA world will continue to be in “UTTER SHOCK” when they continue to see the fan base for MMA continue to grow and continue to pay the bargain basement price of $40.00 (Compared to boxing and WWE events) for the non stop action and devastating knockouts! I don’t know about you but I would much rather watch fast non-stop action for 2 hours straight than 2 pugilists trying to hug each other for 15 rounds!

Thanks, Mike

I think mine and everyone else’s opinion here counts just a little more than this a**hole’s. That’s because I did buy the event, and did not feel like I was cheated one bit. Quick fights are almost always action packed (Stevenson/Guillard an execption). This guy is part of the stuck up Wall Street crowd. Those people will not have anything nice to say about the UFC until it goes public and they own stock in it.

I disagree with a first timer getting ripped off on this fight. There may have neen a couple of quick fights, to include the Rampage KO over Liddell but that’s what makes the sport what it is. Choose your poison. Would you rather watch something exciting and real? Or sit back and watch a slow technical fight that neither fighter wants to push the pace. There are fights that go the distance, and there are fights that end in 48 seconds. Let’s face it this sport is perfect for the world we live in today. We crave the blood, the realness, the KO, the excitement.

I don’t buy ppv’s and hope every fight goes the distance so that I get “bang for my buck” (Nerd accent). I think that bang for my buck is good fights. Good fights are not necessarily long. If you want to get more time for your money go rent a movie.

I thought the ppv as a whole was exciting. I enjoy seeing a knockout no matter what point of the fight it happens. I would rather see a few quick knockouts than a boring 12 round fight where each fighter is more scared about making a mistake than trying to win the fight.

That’s just my two cents…

Karo showed some improved defense. He still needs a lot of work and conditioning.

I didn’t see Karo gas once. Burkman surprisingly was huffing and puffing and he is supposed to be in top condition. Karo has it all right now and doesn’t need anything else except a title shot ASAP.

This quote is funny….
wah wah wah, fights were too short, if I was a first time buyer Id never buy again.
If you bought into the hype of Chuck Liddell, then you would indeed watch more MMA events…
If you are a combat sport/boxing fan, you would indeed watch more fights…
For Keith Jardine to not be such a big name fighter, and then talk about ‘some guy named Houston’ KOing him…
Its like brass vs brass…. pro boxing and pro MMA opinions are getting too overbearing in the sports media… PERIOD! Its like Lou whatshisface catching an attitude with everyone’s favorite MMA commentator/comedian/douchebag on Sportcenter last week.
