UFC 71: Goldberg confirms the signing of Mauricio "Shogun"Rua

Last week UFCmania reported here that Mauricio "Shogun" Rua was rumored to have signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Last night, UFC commentator Mike Goldberg officially confirmed it.
Not that anyone would have noticed.
Amidst the signing of Dan "Hollywood" Henderson and the aura of Chuck/Rampage II, the Shogun signing may have been easy to overlook.
Almost like Shogun himself.
At 16-2 and just 25 years of age, the unassuming Shogun has made a name for himself by terrorizing the PRIDE middleweight division since his successful debut at Bushido 1 back in 2003.
While some fans have not been impressed with the legacy of PRIDE (especially after the brutal KO of Mirko Cro Cop to Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 70), let me assure you that with 13 of his 16 wins coming by (T)KO, Shogun Rua is a force to be reckoned with.
Just ask newly crowned LHW champion Quinton "Rampage" Jackson.
Rampage was on the receiving end of a bona fide beatdown courtesy of the Brazilian superstar, and aside from his freak accident against Mark Coleman at PRIDE 31, Rua has been nearly perfect.
And don't expect to wait around for Shogun to make his presence known. He's scheduled to be at UFC 72 in some form or capacity.
It may be just a formal introduction ala Minotauro Nogueira, but the mere site of him in the Octagon is enough to kick my fantasy matchmaking into high gear.

Ya know, I can see the UFC screwing up the promotion of this guy.
And yes, you right. Last night, I asked 4 guys who had just come from Gators watching the fights, and I asked them what they thought of the Shogun signing…. crickets. So, he really does need some buildup prior to his title shot. 205 is gettig deeper and deeper.

MTU, when you referring to something that was going to happen, but just wasn’t announced yet, I was thinking it would be the signing of Kang.

I hope you’re wrong about the Shogun promotion. It would be a crime to misrepresent a talent like that.
Also, the fact that Goldberg mentioned Kang, as Din Thomas walked into the cage, makes me think that we will see him soon. The middleweight division could use just a bit more talent.
I think they need to give Shogun a high profile opponent. Someone we all know, and that the casual fans think is really good. Griffin or Bisping come to mind. Hell, maybe even Bonnar.
by Mahde on May 27, 2007 1:10 PM EDT reply actions
I say they feed him Bonnar or Griffin. Especially since neither have one punch KO power but rather a penchant for taking abuse & swinging for the fences. That’d be a worthy intro for Shogun.

So who is left in Pride…I mean seriously, it seems like the UFC simply aquired Pride only to take its best fighters…what happened to these speculated super matchups between Pride and the UFC?…doesnt make sense if the UFC has all of the top contenders.

I spent a good part of this week working on 2 stories. If the 71 signing was gonna be the guy I keep hearing, and something about Liddell. NO on one, and nothing concrete or journalistic about 2. Lotta wasted time….

Reminds me of when WWE bought WCW, signed the top stars, and flushed the rest down the toilet. They got what they wanted, a few good talents and a massive tape library.
Sound familiar?

That would be a similar formula to the Leben/Anderson Silva fight. Using the TUF guys, who the average fan knows, as fodder for entering, but less well-known to less-knowledgable fans, fighters seems like a good strategy.

why not alexander for shogun, he just destroyed a “top fighter” within a minute, and shogun beating him would def help his name and the ufc prob wouldn’t care too much

Shogun could easily fight rampage tommorow and give rampage a good run for his money… the guy is sick in every aspect of the game…. he has great hands that rival chucks… not the punching power but better technically…. and his ground game is sick.. he trains at chute box with wandy so you know his grappling is top… he deserves to get just as much promotion as rampage if not more… but good idea in fighting a popular but not as good ultimate fighter… but i doubt Bisping cuz thats Dana’s golden boy for spreading UFC world wide so dont look for him to fight huge names soon… if griffin beats hector ramirez at 72 he should fight Shogun.

I don’t think he should or will fight Bisping; I might be in the minority but I think (obviously don’t know until he fights a real challenge) that Bisping has more potential than any TUF alum.

They don’t need a once a year superbowl thing if they are all in one org. anyway, the whole point is that we get to see these match ups, and now we do, it’s better this way.
And I don’t think they will give him HA, that guy has some potential it would be a pitty to kill him off now, give him Bisbing Forrest or Bonner.
How do you guys thing a Bisbing Vs. Forrest match up would be?

Indeed, all the match ups between the great fighters will really make the trademark/reputation war between Price and UFC seem less interesting.

Really? Bisping more so than Diego Sanchez, Kendall Grove or Rashad Evans? I can understand that you may personally prefer Bisping over those three but I think it’s a stretch to say that he has more potential than any TUF alum.

Did you guys want to see it for the sake of Pride Vs. UFC, or because otherwise, one would never get to see Shogun Vs. Liddell, Jacson Vs. Hendo, Wandi Vs. Tito or whatever.
I think you guys are missing the whole point of these “super match ups”. It’s just a chance to let down the the organizational barrier and let both guys fight that otherwise, wouldn’t.

I think Rampage would stay the champ for a while. He talks alot of trash to his opponent though. As far as Rua vs. Rampage i think it would be an awesome fight. Rampage would win cause as what he said in the interview he would train even harder cause he is the champ now.

No i’m not arguing that really, I mean yeah it was business competition and that sucks, but I mean i’m in it for the pure MMA aspect of it, who is the best, and when Pride and UFC were seperate you had some of the best here, and some there, who was REALLY teh best? Now they can settle that, that’s what im hyped on, not the fact to organizations are pitting themselves against one another. But yeah it does suck for them over there, hopefully over the years MMA will become more and more international, becoming mroe like soccer, where it is all over the world, and less like baseball and football, virtually only in the states.

bisping v forrest
forrest would cicle and croud bisping both would trade punches and kicks, look for bisping to take it to the ground, woul either be a decision or a knockout similar to forrest v jardine

Yeah, you really can’t judge the Rampage/Shogun fight by the last one, there was so much going on then. And now, Rampage is a level above where he was. Like I was saying, that was the most non-lucky KO punch I have seen. The way he covered up then LOOKED up at his target, threw and nailed it bullseye. I would be very interested to see Rampage fight Wandi again, or Shogun.

I honstly don’t know how Shogun is gonig to do int the UFC. A huge part of Chute boxe’s repetoir is kicking people while thier down and now you can’t do that anymore. I don’t even think they can do that in pride anymore, once they eventualy have a fight after being purchased. I wish there was an organization somewhere where the rules allowed kicking a downed opponent, knees to the head on the ground and elbows to the head. Maybe somewhere in thailand eventually. Of course Shogun is still awsome and I have no doubts about him beating 95% of people in the ufc.

From what I hear…
Hendo is signed to ZUFFA/Pride Worldwide, not the UFC. This all came about once the sale was finalized.
Shogun will do fine for 2 reasons. He already has fought under these rules at Pride 33 and destroyed Overeem. Second, Poop Chute Boxe has always trained both styles of rules, since they have fighters in both orgs.
No worries. Shogun will do fine. They just need to feed him some chum to build up the fan base, maybe Forrest or Bonnar.

You’re right, as a fan, if you are unfamiliar with a fighter then it’s very hard to approve of them with only having seen one fight. However, you have to trust that Rampage is the real deal. He has losses just like any seasoned MMA fighter you can think of but he is truly terror in the ring, even when he ultimately loses. Try going to youtube.com & searching quinton rampage jackson. Check out some of his many, many tribute films or HL (highlights) & you will get familiar very fast & see why so many have so much confidence in his abilities. Rampage has been handing out ass-whoopin’s for years.
