Couture predicts Jackson over Liddell at UFC 71

UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture predicts that the 2007 upset train will continue to roll this upcoming Memorial Day weekend, picking Quinton "Rampage" Jackson to end the reign of light heavyweight king Chuck Liddell, according to an article in the Boston Herald.

Historically, "The Natural" has been incredibly accurate with his analysis and fight breakdowns. His most recent prediction -- which flew in the face of common consensus -- of Gabriel Gonzaga to defeat Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic seemed like a reach at the time.

But, boy did it happen.

Here are Couture's quick thoughts on the monster rematch on May 26 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada:

"My feeling is that this series of upsets in the UFC is going to continue and that Rampage is going to beat Chuck. I think Rampage is not intimidated and he has the skill set and the ability to make this a tough night for Liddell. I think on my picks for the main card fights on the Fight Network's 'Natural Pick,' I'm 35-15, so we'll see how I do on this card."

I agree 100 percent.

But a wise man told me once to never bet against the "Iceman" -- he always finds a way to win.

That's the reason this rematch is so damn intriguing ... and the reason I'm so torn on who will come out victorious.

Don't forget -- which I am guilty of myself -- that there are some nice bouts also on the nine-fight card.

Here's the main card line up most will see on the pay-per-view (PPV) broadcast:

  • Karo Parisyan vs. Josh Burkman
  • Ivan Salaverry vs. Terry Martin
  • Keith Jardine vs. Houston Alexander
  • Chis Leben vs. Kalib Starnes

For the complete UFC 71 fight card click here.

Don't forget to also head over to the Boston Herald to see predictions from Tito Ortiz, Kenny Florian, Heath Herring and others on the main event between Liddell and Jackson.

Wow,even The Natural is picking Jackson to win.In the beginning I thought Chuck will win hands down, but after all the interviews and watching them train I think it could go either way now.

my prediction is chuck wins by ko in 4th minute of the 2nd by head kick, similar to the first Babalu fight.

Couture is pretty good at predicting fights bit i think that he’s gonna be wrong and chucks gonna find that hit that will knock out rampage

This can definitely go either way. I doubt he’d put too much money on his pick. These guys are both going to swing for the fences and somebody is getting knocked out.

so how do you think the fights gonna go then?

i say chuck by (T)KO in the 2nd

I would like to see the fight play out in some of the same ways it did the first time.

I really think that Rampage will have a little harder time this go around, but in the end will be victorious. I think that some view QRJ as very confident, but I think that he will be going into this fight with less confidence then the first. He knows that Liddell has been going around avenging his losses, and that he has been doing it with good success.

I think that they will both come out strong, with QRJ trying to throw some over hand punches and while doing so he will be taking some good stiff Jabs from Liddell. Once Rampage gets woke up a little (if not knocked out :) )I think he will look for the take down! To QRJ surprise Liddell will show him how much easier it is to get back up in the cage. After a couple of Attempts at keeping him on the ground, I think QRJ will slam him into the center of the ring, and ground and pound Liddell for the Ref stoppage.
This would be my Ideal fight!

I cant wait to see the outcome, and in the end I will cover my ass once again by stating “The reason we love MMA is due to the Surprises.”

thats fine this is a blog site and u are entitled to say that, i just think that rampage is gonna get frustrated with chucks spawl and will shoot recklessly and chuck will catch him with a shin.

i definitely agree with this part of your comment chris, i’ve been thinking that for a couple weeks now, i’m not sure if thats gonna play a huge role in the fight unless liddell can end it early, but i definitely think rampage is going into this fight with a little more think and a little less intstinct and i think its a slight advantage to chuck early on…but like you said, if page wakes up and lets his insticts take over and can somehow get chuck on the mat the fight could definitely go to rampage…

i dont see this going past the first round….both will swing for the fences…

Liddell catches rampage at the 4 min mark with a right hook..

This fight will go either way, and I won’t be suprised. All I hope for is a good fight. 2 well prepared fighters brawling it out. Like a Silva/Rampage fight, and than boom it’s all over

I dont think that Rampage beating Chuck is that big of an upset. Rampage beat him the last time they fought, and now Chuck is getting a little older.

What would be an upset is if Houston (No one has ever heard of me) Alexander beats The Dean of Mean (worst fightname ever) Kieth Jardine. I think Jardine has shown that he could hang with the top guys. I dont think he could beat Chuck, but I think it would be an enjoyable fight.

its an upset cuz the UFC is chuck’s stomping grounds. and the first fight bein in pride is one of the main excuses for chuck losing the first time. if rampage beats him again in chucks House, damn, NO EXCUSES.

now I have written my prediction in great detail back on “liddell talks Rampage fight on CBS”and you can read it and see what I said,I actualy predicted how each round would go and said it would end in the fourth with Chuck gassing Rampage getting the take down and pounding out chuck,
you people who say Chuck is unbeatable are stupid, there is not a human bean on the planet who cannot be defeated, there isnt now and there never has been.

Chuck is my favourite fighter but I just dont like the way he keeps saying over and over in interviews that he will KO Rampage in the 1st round,if he does that I will be astonished,if he had more the attitude and was saying yeah I can see this fight going to the later rounds and its gonna be tough to stop Rampage then I would pick Chuck but his attitude is what has worried me,page has never been KOed by a punch only by repeated brutal knees and you know they say styles make fights well I think Rampage is the one guy in the world who has the perfect style to beat Chuck.

I just have a horrible gut feeling that Chuck is in for a rude awakening here and possibly his worst beating ever.

I like them both, i think the fight could go either way, if i had to choose, ill give it to Rampage, Chuck looked rusty in that tito fight!

anytime you have a champ on a seven fight consecutive KO win streak losing his title then it is an upset. It will be shocking to see Liddell lose his belt after the way he has seemed to be invinsible for so long.

by mcanena on May 21, 2007 5:14 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

remembering randy’s comentary in the tito fight he kept saying tito needed to work the tak downs from the clinch and that you wont take chuck down by shooting from the outside, maybe randy is working on the same concept for rampage coupled with the fact rampge has a better chin and stand up than tito.

Liddel just said the other day Couture was his toughest opponent so maybe RC is icing up Rampage- picking him to win- as a favor to his long time nemesis. I hope it is a good fight but Rampage has only one unimpressive win over the aged, minor leaguer Eastman and now they are giving him the title shot. Dana White just wants him to sink or swim I guess. If he sinks we’ll see what kind of fights he gets down the road.

He had a strong chin in the Pride fights I saw which were all 2003-2005 but he’s been rocked pretty good since then. I wouldn’t imply he has great standup. He makes his money in GNP (minus elbows in Pride). You can’t compare Rampage’s standup against Eastman versus Tito’s standup against Liddell. Rampage should hopefully be able to cover up as well as Tito did. The fact he’s training with Tito is certainly a plus.

Naaa, by picking Rampage to win, I don’t think that helps Rampage at all. He picked GG to beat CC but noone was listening to him then despite his phenomenal record (35-15 now). If he is right on this one too, he’s got a job in vegas waiting for him after Noguira submits him.

my prediction is chuck wins by ko in 4th minute of the 2nd by head kick, similar to the first Babalu fight.

I second that but it will probably be a flurry of strikes and kicks to end it, not just one home run shot.

If Rampage is relaxed and has got rid of the nervous feeling he had against Eastmen, he will win. If he’s still got those butterflies he’s going to lose.

Rampage will defeat Chuck at UFC 71..It will be crazy toe to toe a few rampage takedowns..and that’s were Chuck will be in trouble..Rampage will keep him on the deck and pound him out. This fight will be like the first one, just with more fireworks due to the great story line.

Whoever said that Liddell will sprawl the take down, consider this. Rampage can curl 205 pounds easy, he can dead lift well over 205. Sorry but I think Liddell will go onto his back at some point, and he’s going to have to avoid some mean GNP.

If Liddell can stand back up after every takedown, then Rampage is screwed. Those of us who wrestle know getting slammed takes a ton of energy out of an opponent.

I’m surprised how many people on this board see the Rampage footage from a few years ago and it’s like time stopped and now here he is. The guy was definitely tough as nails then but he has taken quite a pounding since. If he beats Liddell, I’ll be just as shocked as Gonzaga over Crocop. Well, very nearly. I don’t think Liddell is going to take him lightly. He should want to put a Wanderlei Silva style whoopin on Rampage and put a nice bow on his career. Rampage will be fighting for his UFC life because if he looks bad out there, well, look how quickly Babalu came and went.

Rampage will have to swim back over to Japan.

It’s going to be VERY INTERESTING.
Chuck is a heavy striker. But Rampage bobs and weaves (and outboxed Liddell in the first fight. So I can’t give Liddell the stand up advantage except in the one punch KO scenario . But Rampage isn’t that easy to hit.
Chuck would be more likely to gas – but I bet he has been training like hell for this one.
On the ground… well, Chuck has great takedown defense wrestling and sprawl and bloody hard to keep let alone punish on the ground. Jackson is powerful and effective on the ground but I don’t think he’ll be able to submit Liddell. Liddell should grab a leg if he feels a slam coming – that has stopped quinton slams before.
Last time,
Jackson did hurt Liddell standing and tired/softened him so much that by the time the take downs started to happen liddell was hanging on to the ropes but to no avail – he went down and didn’t get back up.

by patrickgamil on May 24, 2007 1:40 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Does anyone seriously think that Chuck can land a one-punch KO on Rampage? Although the comparisons to the first fight are getting old, Chuck did land a lot of strong shots on Rampage and it didn’t happen then, and won’t happen now.

“The winner by referee stopage at 2:43 in Round 2, and the NEW UFC Light Heavyweight Champion…..Quenton “Rampage” Jacksonnnnnnnnnnnnn!!!!!!

Enjoy the fight everybody.

The tough thing about having a favorite fighter is that it’s almost inevitable that they will eventually lose. I used to think Roy Jones was the best thing until he finally met up with Tarber. Now Liddell meets his kryptonite in Quinton Jackson. Liddell suddenly looked like an old man in there gettin his “ass whooped” by Rampage. Wow. This is still sinking in. What a bummer. Keep your head up, Chuck. We need one more against Rampage to see if you really are mortal.

by Stunned on May 27, 2007 1:35 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I don’t know why people are stunned. Both fighters have KO power and anything can happen. Also, Rampage beat him before. It was a Power Bout. That’s the difference with Boxing and MMA. Boxers are so technically defensive it’s harder to get upsets. With the huge Houston upset yesterday, it just adds to the lists of recent upsets. When they fight again, there’s no telling what could happen, even if Ramp has a psychological advantage. One huge punch takes that away.

I’m curious to see if Houston can climb up to get a big fight with one of the top guys or if he gets upset on the way up there. I just love this sport because you never know. I love boxing too but MMA has us always guessing.

Chuck will be back and a Ramp and Hendo fight will be huge! I can’t wait for other Pride fighters to crossover
