UFC 71: 'Big' John McCarthy to ref Liddell-Jackson

ufc 71 John McCarthy to ref Liddell-JacksonWidely regarded as the top referee in mixed martial arts (MMA), John McCarthy will be the man in charge of the Octagon during the UFC 71 main event between UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Chuck Liddell and Quinton Rampage Jackson on May 26, according to FightNetwork.com.

It's no surprise that the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) assigned "Big John" to referee the big event — he has been around since the beginning.

In fact, from UFC 2 to UFC 31 McCarthy supervise every single main card match.

As the sport has evolved and exploded during the last few years, naturally more referees have been brought into the fold. However, McCarthy has set the standard for his contemporaries inside the cage.

And if there is ever a questionable call — or a fighter in a big fight feels the bout was stopped prematurely — almost always the questions comes up:

"Why wasn't ‘Big John' in charge of the action?"

Or, maybe that's just whenever Tito Ortiz is involved (i.e. Ken Shamrock 2, Liddell 2).

Regardless, it's an important fight that will more than likely be a slug fest. I'm willing to wager that the five-round fight between these two aggressive strikers is going to end early.

It's good to know that "Big John" will be in there to ensure that it doesn't end too early.

Cool, now Rampage can headbutt, cut gouge, and throat choke without worrying about the ref interfering.

Ok, have at me.

Johnny’s an Icon in UFC. He’s the right man for the job. Thank god it’s not Herb Dean I can’t stand that guy.

Good to Hear Big John is Refing the Fight, i Think this will be a Fast Paced non stop action Fight and John is the right guy to Keep these two Warriors in Check

Agreed. Herb needs a vacation. Maybe he should take some time off to train for his upcoming fight and comeback recharged. Hes got to be feeling the pressure with his string of questionable calls lately and thats not good for a ref - possibly second guiessing himself.

i dont think anyone will have to worry about there being any controversy in this fight. someones going night night in this one.

I dont see why everyone sweats this guys nuts…
Troy Wahe is good, So is Mazagotti… Herb Dean is the only one Ive seen in the UFC to question. There are many MANY good MMA refs. I think McCarthey has a following because he is bigger then 90% of the fighters… and has this machizmo about him, almost like a big guy arrogance (Not like Id know… being 6’5" 240lbs..)

I like BJM and Mazzagatti the best. Dean is the worst IMO, he’s very inconsistent.
Either way, I wouldn’t want to be a MMA ref, it has to be a really demanding job, esp for title matches.

i would love to have this job, not that i’m qualified or anything, but this would be a dream job, despite all the pressure. could you imagine being that up-close to the fights.

Thank God it is anyone but Herb Dean. I would hate to see the fight end after 20 seconds cause someone caught a jab. Big John is always the right man for the job for main events.

Big John is the only ref for me.

There is no question that Big John is the best MMA ref out there today, and the reason is quite simple: he is the only ref who puts fighter safety above all else. For example, remember when Gonzaga knocked out Cro Cop with that devastating head kick? Every single person who saw the kick knew that Crop Cop was finished when that connected. Gonzaga, of course, pounced, and began landing completely uncontested punches on the head of Cro Cop. Dean, who was on the opposite side of Cro Cop from Gonzaga, circles all the way around Cro Cop so that he can gingerly corral Gonzaga from behind, safely out of the way of his punches. Ever watch Big John stop a fight? The minute that he determines that a fighter is done, he literally throws his body between the fighters. This is a single example, but in the Gonzaga fight, Big John would have saved Cro Cop from at least a couple of uncontested punches. What does it matter, right? I mean, the punches were of no consequence.

The point is that to me, all the other MMA refs seem almost incompetent. Fighter safety ought to be the primary concern. Troy Wahe is way too timid, Mazzagatti (sp?) hides behind his mustache, and Herb Dean is so tiwtchy and jumpy that you never know when he’s going to stop the fight. There’s just no other choice for a big fight but Big John.

Big John will ref. so Chuck remains as the poster child for UFC

As soon as Rampage gets into trouble, Big John will halt the bout

Dana White was pushing Rampage to fight Chuck, when Rampage insisted he needed a couple more fights as a tune up first…so Dana sweetened the deal with more money

Dana knows Rampage isnt ready yet- thats why he wants them to fight so soon……why the push? Dana wants Chucky to remain the only one to live up to Icon status…..as everyone, except Fedor- has been upset

Big John McCarthy is undefeated on " UFC TAPOUT" on my Xbox. He went through to 100 wins before retiring as a Subway sanga spokesman! RAH!

Another vote for the “I can’t stand Herb Dean!” fan club. He’s terrible and when he ref’d the Elite XC contest, you knew it was their death knell when Frank Shamrock kneed Renzo in the head and Herb was late to get to the call. I think Dean was in La La Land while the two fighters were on the ground.

MORETHANUFC, maybe you could explain what you meant by this, it sounds like your saying jackson can do what chuck does in his fights, if thats what your saying than you ARE STUPID, chuck has never done any of this in his fights, except poke someones eye 2 or 3 times in past fights. If this is not what you meant than I stand corrected.
