I can see serra beating hughes. His stand up is definitely improved. He’s like 5 6 and he threw a head kick at shonie lol. He has great ground skills too, so if hughes takes him down he’ll survive off his back. he’s active and he doesn’t just lay there. And we all know hughes can’t strike lol. I’m getting sick of predicting outcomes of fights though, the upsets lately are ridiculous. I’d rather just not think about them until they happen.

BTW I had potatoes last night, and on the bag it said “from Hughes farms” and I laughed my ass off.

Matt Serr sure will shock the world again…. When they see how bad he will get beat by hughes.

When’s the last time a guy won a belt and was considered the underdog in his first title defense? I haven’t watched much Serra really. I would think he wants to stand up against Hughes. Does he have good takedown defense? Hughes is going to stick with the GNP that go him to the top.

That was one f#$%ing annoying video. I’m just a little bit day by day not liking Serra more and more. I never really liked that New York attitude anyway, so I guess it was bound to happen. At the end of the day, it’s a great Rocky story ( Rocky 1 and 2 ) but Clubber Lang exists also in the shape of a redneck who works on a farm and sells potato chips.

Sad to say it by all the other comments but I want to see Serra win. I hate Hughes and think Serra could actually pull this one off and agree with Rob. But jus the pure hatred for Hughes fuels this feeling I think though (especially after watching Hughes celebrate like a f*cking immature assh*le after GSP got KO’ed). Too bad Hughes will probably win then get his ass handed to him by GSP again though haha…

Hughes really screwed up his image and tanked his own popularity. If you only watch the sound bites he provides you get the sense he is a decent, Captain America kinda guy. He has good camera presence. Comes across in THOSE situations as a likeable, upstanding guy. But then you see the real Hughes like you mentioned above- celebrating GSP getting knocked out. Or during TUF, talking trash to both GSP and Serra… like a high school bully. I’m not crazy about Serra but I cheer for anyone against Hughes now. And I cheered for Hughes for a long time until this latest stuff. Like I said before, Hughes gets the Mike Tyson award for trashing his own carefully cultivated image.

by the way I see serra going in with a lot of momentum, but most likely it will be similar to the last match with Penn where hughes seems to be getting dominated until about the 3rd when he will pull out the win. However I would love to see Hughes get submitted, knocked out, or ground and pounded until the ref stops the fight…

I like this safe approach also with thi fight. Toss up/but likely Hughes. I hope Serra kicks his ass. It was funny to hear Serra crack on that sorry ass looking tat on his chest.

by Stafo on May 8, 2007 4:02 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Serra is an underdog for a good reason, but not by that much, could easily knock out Hughes, don’t see him submitting him. Contrary to his last fight, Serra needs to keep it standing, don’t think he can. I call it goes to a descision, in favor of Hughes.

by The Anomaly on May 8, 2007 4:04 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

That was the worst interviewer ever – but Serra’s jokes did not cracked me up either. As for the Serra-Hughes bout: I disliked Hughes from the beginning and probably never will like him, but he is the better fighter. You can hate him as much as you want, but in the end he is a very well-rounded fighter and dominant as long as he keeps playing his (sometimes boring) game.

As for Serra: didn’t liked him either, thought Lytle won the TUF finale or there should have been a draw/overtime, his constant dissing of Hughes was funny in the beginning, its boring now and I think he got his cut with championship and should retire after the next loss against Hughes, so he can eat italian food all day long.

You know what…I thought Lytle won that fight also. It was obvious that Dana was rooting for Serra. Most likely Hughes will prevail but I hope Serra pulls the upset and GSp gets the return shot and wins this time around.

I dislike Hughes, always have. Serra is like a cheese grater on my nerves though-the more I know about him and see interview after interview, the less I like him.
Still, I think Serra has a great chance to beat Hughes if he can avoid getting slammed and GNP’d. I have never thought Hughes was not a well-rounded fighter and I give Serra the edge in standup and subs from the top – I think Hughes will overpower any subs from the Serra guard.
KO-Serra
TKO-Hughes
Sub-Serra
GNP-Hughes
Im thinking its 50/50, but would love to see Serra win.
Other than King Fisher, any MFS loss is a good day.

I know that a lot of people don’t like Hughes anymore after seeing how he really is as a person. The fact is, I could care less what kind of person he is, and if anyone deserves to be a dick, he’s earned it. He was one of the most dominant champs in the history of the UFC. I think hands down he’ll win this fight and I think that St. Pierre will smash his head in again. At least I hope that’s the way it works out.

It’s kind of a shame that they’re going to dick GSP around for another year probably (Hughes/Serra to fight in Oct at the earliest I’d imagine). I’m a huge St. Pierre fan and I think that they really made a mistake putting one of the most exciting divisions on ice until the fall.

by ajadoniz on May 8, 2007 6:19 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Let’s look at the facts. Besides St. Pierre, Hughes loses to guys with great submissions or excellent BJJ. I think Serra has a great chance in this fight, because he won’t have to worry about getting Hughes to the ground. Hughes will take it there for him.

hughes was celebrating that serra win over gsp as a fan of mma and in recognition of a huge upset, he was surprised like the rest of us, everybody is looking too far into that, its got nothing to do with him being scared to fight gsp again or him knowing he’s gonna beat serra’s ass, even though i’m sure he and everyone on here knows he’s going to destroy serra, say what you want about the upsets or whatever, but hughes is going to destroy serra, not only because he’s way way way better, but because serra’s asking for it, this time serra is the bad guy and he’s going to get hurt…

ditto…All Hughes said was “I love it”…just like I was jumping all over the room and high-fiving my buddies…nothing to do with anything except the unexpected…plus, noone has said a thing about Muscle Shark coming over to Hughes with that smerk on his face. tha Spida, you nailed it on that point.
I still think its 50/50. Serra could pull it off again.

by SaVaGe on May 8, 2007 6:45 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

It was obvious that Hughes was happy that GSP lost. Serra hit the nail on the head by saying that Hughes is an A$$ hole. If you don’t think so, watch any of the TUF episodes which he was in – beating up his team that he’s supposed to coach(Von Fluke), talking crap to GSP, etc.etc.

Hughes deserves mad respect as a fighter but Serra is right about his personality.

I can see Serra pull the upset. Hughes was loosing the fight against Penn badly until Penn really injured himself – not to mention Penn’s prior victory over Hughes. Hughes lost to Hallman twice by submission. He lost to GSP convincingly, and was loosing their first match until GSP got caught.

His only real recent dominant victory was against almost 40yr old Royce Gracie who probably only trains in his garage on Saturdays after he takes his kids to baseball practice.

I can’t see Hughes submitting Serra, and Hughes has never KO’d anyone from a strike (he did slam Newton for a KO but he was out himself for a moment). At most, Hughes will get take downs and win on points. I think Serra has an excellent chance of rocking Hughes for TKO or catching him in a submission.

If Hughes is favored, I’m going to Vegas and betting on Serra.

I would like to see GSP have a chance to avenge his loss to Serra and let Hughes fight guys like Koscheck, Sanchez, Karo, or Fitch (when is the UFC going to let Fitch get in the mix? he’s undefeated in the UFC with very impressive victories) to earn the #1 contention spot… not fight Lytle for it.

No disrespect towards Lytle, he’s great, but he wasn’t title contention. However, I do admire Hughes for asking for Sanchez instead of Lytle. That would have been a good match.

I watched Serra on TUF 4 and couldn’t stand him (I’m from NY). I was very happy for him when he knocked out GSP, come on what an upset. After listening to all these stupid interviews with him bashing Hughes, I think I dislike him more now. I think Serra hates Hughes because Hughes destroyed his hero “Gracie”.

Can anyone tell when Hughes has actually fought someone smaller than him? Hughes is going to get a hold of him and not let go. GNP will finish the fight.

serra won the belt on april 7, and the hughes fight will probably be around oct. or nov. a 6 or 7 month layoff, that is a long time to wait for a champ to defend his belt your right but it won’t be that bad, at least we’ll have the show to build up some more animosity, unlike sean sherk who we haven’t even seen since he won the belt on oct. 14th, he’ll fight on july 7th, which is gonna be a nine month layoff with no build up, i get your point and agree, we need fighting champions like anderson silva and chuck liddell…

Objectively

Striking – so far looks like Serra has learned how.
Wrestling – Hughes by a mile
BJJ – Serra by a mile.
Defense as a whole – Hughes by a wide margin.
Muay Thai – neither is profiecient so it’s a toss up. I mean who can Serra ( 4’11" ) get in a clinch?
GnP – Hughes, but Serra’s not bad.

Hughes by spinning back fist.

No, this is a close fight, no two ways about it.

What are you talking about? Hughes is a farm boy…hardly making him “preppy”. As far as a jock, wake up, mixed martial arts are filled with former wrestlers/boxers/athletes who most would consider “jocks”. You must be a couple of years removed from high school and have had some bad run-ins with the “jocks” there…

For those of you who think Matt is an ass, think about two things…Matt does a lot for charities, both in giving his time and money. Probably a lot more than most athletes in the mma industry. Secondly, everyone has their own personality. Just because Hughes had some fun with his team on TUF 2 and gave GSP a little good natured ribbing on TUF 4, doesn’t make him a dick.

I like Serra, but his constant calling Hughes a d@#K every chance he gets is getting really old. I hope Hughes wipes the canvas with Serra’s face.

well the reason i say serra has no chance in THIS fight is because he’s gone and pissed matt hughes off and thats not smart, there is no question in my mind that matt hughes is better than serra as an all around mma fighter and now besides the fight being for the belt has more reason to take this fight as serious as any other in his career and i don’t care how good serra is in bjj if and when this fight goes to the ground matt hughes is just stronger than him and will control the fight, as far as stand up, i hope serra doesn’t think he’s all of a sudden a stand up fighter because he’s not and that thinking will get you in trouble, look at diego sanchez, as far as matt serra being where he is for a reason, lets look at that, he beat someone i don’t remember and then shonie carter to get to the tuf final, and in the tuf final he won a ridiculous decision to chris lytle because he had the better personality on the show and was the more marketable fighter, and i really believe that chris lytle won that fight, i’ve seen it more than once and stand by that opinion, and then won the belt vs. gsp, that fight is hard to argue against, but we all know somehting was wrong with gsp that night, like i said all fighters have bad nights and if those two fought ten more times gsp would win all ten, so yeah serra has the belt, but in my opinion he’s not really a worthy champion, like matt hughes always was, and i know crazier things have happened in mma then matt serra beating matt hughes and i know i could happen, but in THIS fight i give matt serra 0% chance to win, not when matt hughes is pissed off and focused on his belt at the same time, i would bet the house on hughes…as far as hughes being a dick and you’ve heard that from people in the business and all that, well confidence and arrogance are two different things and i think he def possesses both atributes, he can be a dick for sure, i don’t disagree with that, but i’m gonna stand by my opinion that when serra won the belt and he was shown smiling and cheering and all that, that it was him as a fan of mma more than a fighter who would be facing the winner, we were all stunned when it happened and there’s no reason why he shouldn’t be allowed to be too, theres obviously no way we will ever know requardless of what anyone says so that part of it is pointless to argue, the fight between serra and hughes is not, i will most of the time give any fighter a chance, but not this time, this is the lock of the century, serra has zero chance my friend, he’s digging his own grave and becoming the arrogant dick he keeps making matt hughes out to be, he said he wouldn’t let the belt go to his head, but looks to me like he’s eating those words, opinion vs. opinion i know and i respect yours too…

I hope Hughes wipes the canvas with Serra’s face.

agree 1 million %, right on the money…

Good points Eric B, I wonder if its possible for Serra to not mention Hughes when he talks? As he’s banging his wife he going …Hughes is a dick, Hughes is a dick…uhhh…. Having a nice conversation with his grandma, " Did I tell you Hughes is a dick ?" I used to kind of like Serra but please, enough already.

hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha, funny shit dude

Every dog has its day…. but mean while let the champ enjoy his last moment. I like Serra, n still do, but just don’t think he belongs with the big dogs. He will be ground and pounded very badly. I hope it’s not true though.

As far as Hughes and his attitude. I would never say that I think the guy has not done allot for the sport, or for charities for that matter. I think the guy shows allot of respect towards the idea of being a good guy. If you want to know the good things he has done, just go to his blog, there is a link on this page I believe. I do feel Hughes is going to win, and probably easy, but in the end I give Serra about a 35% chance of winning. this fight, when compared to his 15% chance to beat GSP. I think if they could get either GSP, or Hughes back to the top the 170 lb division will be back where it supposed to be and this talk about Serra will diminish.

As far as how I like Hughes, well in the end what I think about his arrogance means nothing. It is just my voiced opinion. I feel if Hughes was to show more respect and not act like the “bully Jock,” then he could be a likable guy.

Thats all for this thread!

Wait a second…Are you saying he actually tells the good things he does on his website, blogs about them? I thought his Word said to, hide your good doings or else you already received your reward.

Matt hughes is dusted and gone, Karma knocked his cocky smile off as it will do the same for Serra. GSP will reign supreme.
