Its amazing how some people let popular opinion be their conscience.

He said he regrets saying what he said. I forgive him.

If Kellerman didnt come to the defense of MMA during the same telecast as Lampley’s comments and if his boss wasn’t about to invest alot of money in the UFC then we would have never had this audio. Im sick of boxing and its “cheap” way of advertising and hyping itself. Just like Mayweather who has already said he was sorry for his comments about MMA and now openly says he “respects” it. Its just a cheap way to try to get some more face time. No offense to boxing, always liked it but it just doesn’t compare to MMA anymore. And Lampey and anyone else who doesn’t like that idea or still thinks MMA takes no skill at all, should then strap on some gloves and step up to some of the freak of nature athletes within MMA.

Crawford, I dont think that WBA or WBC has come forward with any direct comments about MMA, so Im not sure why you are sick of ’boxing’s cheap way of advertising and hyping itself.’ No offense… All the remarks have been from public sports figures and commentators like the infamous wannabe comedian toolbag Kornheiser… and Wayweather, and Lampley, and so on. I have a pretty good feeling however that Lampley’s comments were ochestrated, and so was this appology… to get even MORE hype around the UFC and their ever growing popularity. Conspiracy theory? No… Just seems logical and good business to me. The bottom line is the general public doesnt know about the HBO-UFC affiliation that is going to pop up anytime soon.
UFCmania, why did my ‘f all the haters’ post get deleted in the other thread? Did it outa comedy =p

I was impressed with Jim Lampley when he substituted on Air America Radio. He is a progressive liberal. Long after the corporatocracy has shipped your job overseas people like Jim will still be advocating for universal health care coverage.
Lets’s cut him some slack.

I hear he’s anti-Bush so he’s forgiven for not loving MMA.

The only reason he is apologizing for it is cause he is taking some serious shit from a lot of people, he doesn’t really mean it. So, whatever, f0ck him.

I like Lampley, but I dont think he quite gets it. He is discounting the wrestling style booking of the UFC because they will keep fighting each other in shorter periods of time. Compared to the one-time “big bang” appeal. Well the big bang appeal on Saturday was lackluster to say the best. I would take the Arlovsky-Sylva trilogy (even the 3rd fight) over de la hoya-Mayweather any day. I rather spend my ppv money on UFC 71-73 than on Cotto-Judah and B-Hop vs Stinky Winky anyday…..

I dont think Lampley regrets what he says about MMA because he is wrong, he regrets it because it makes boxing look like they are scared….

Yeah, Lampley is way off on that. These boards are full of people bitching about the big fights NOT happening. I think the UFC is following boxing’s model almost to a fault. DW and gang take their cues from the boxing world. They groom contenders and stay away from the free-for-all of early UFC or Pride GP.

Mamas….
I think they are following more on the prowrestling as stupid as that sounds. Which in this case is better than boxing. De la Hoya-Mayweather should have happened 5 yrs ago. Boxing keeps missing out because of their shady promoting.
Speaking of boxing RIP Diego Corrales….

Realize the caption is “Jim Lampley regrets recent MMA comments”
If you listen to the interview, he is not really contrite for his comments, only the backlash on himself and boxing. He never says he is “sorry” or “apologizes” or that he was wrong. I looked for a transcript to no avail, but here is what Lampley said regarding his regret. You should listen to the whole interview because it has alot of other information about what Lampley thinks about MMA and the UFC. Alot of his points are good, but nowhere in the interview does he apologize for his “skill level” comment.
Colin Herd:
…“I don’t watch MMA, it’s not my thing, but I appreciate its growth. And it’s obvious to us when we see PPV numbers. I’ve been told you’re not a huge fan. Is MMA a threat to boxing’s big picture popularity?”
Lampley:
“I think it’s, uh, a corresponding attraction and over the long haul both can exist side by side. I made a comment at the end of the telecast the other night, uh, denigrating the skill level of MMA fighters and in retrospect I wish I hadn’t done it because it made me and boxing sound too defensive. It probably would have been better on a night like that, in a telecast like that, that there was no mention of, uh, Mixed Martial Arts. But the bottom line is, I am irritated by people who insist that it’s somehow going to steal boxing’s thunder. Boxing is a sport with 120 year organized history, a huge institutional significance in the American sports scene. Boxing has produced many, if not most, of the critical socio-political heroes in the American sports landscape and to suggest that MMA is somehow on the same level is completely specious, in my view. It’s going to be a long time before any MMA discipline produces an event of the economic maturity of what we achieved with De La Hoya/Mayweather the other night. But do people like to watch it? Yes. Why? It’s perceived as being more violent I think – that’s part 1. And one of the reasons it’s perceived as being more violent is that you don’t have a competitor like Floyd Mayweather who can reduce the violence because of his tremendous skill.”
I am not a hater of the sweet science, quite the contrary, but I think Lampley is dead wrong about the skill level in MMA. In my opinion, this is Lampley trying to do damage control….badly.

This wasnt a apology, by his comments after the fight he proved that boxing may have just seen its last big match. long live mma.

Tru Savage,
Lampley is kidding himself if he thinks UFC is a long way from taking over boxing. I give it 2 years tops. I think UFC has to do whatever it takes to appeal to the latin fans. Just a bite of that share and it is over. I love boxing but the next 2 ppvs – Cotto vs Judah and B-hop vs Wright are not going to work against UFC 71-73
by Jay Velez on May 8, 2007 11:06 AM EDT reply actions
i thik lampey is confused on who is saying that mma is stealing boxings thunder. its not most of the mma experts or afficianados its sports writers who dont have a clue about either sport. it didnt sound like an apology to me either so im not giving him a break. he needs to watch some of the current events in mma and do some background work before he says that mma is not on the same skill level as boxing. there’s a reason more people are watching mma now instead of boxing. the product is better plain and simple. i used to be as obsessed with boxing almost as much as i am with mma now, but couldnt care less about boxing anymore. ufc and mma all the way!

I can’t wait until he has to suck off Dana and all the UFC fighters, metaphorically speaking of course, when he does the play by play for UFC events on HBO.

He never apolopized, just that he wished he hadnt said it because it made himself and boxing look like they were on the defensive.

I dont see Lampley doing play by play for UFC. He clearly doesnt understand the sport at all and has a bias against it to top things off.
Perhaps Frank Trigg or maybe Bas can leave IFL already and sign on. Not that I dont like the IFL. It has some entertaining fights, but the skill level just isnt the same.

First of all, I love boxing. Boxing is great, but Dana is right about there being too much greed in boxing. For the UFC to even be in competition with boxing is a huge step for the whole MMA world. I really believe all of this back and forth between the two sports is all hype. Jim Lampley’s comment has had people talking all week. Controversy sells, just ask “Pretty Boy” Floyd.

I can agree with that man, I wasnt trying to rip you at all. Just really trying to understand your outlook on it.
Mahde, Bas is the FACE of the IFL.. that is what their goal is, that is what he is getting paid for. Ashame too… I think that league is in a lot of trouble, really dont wanna see so many great faces and names go down with it. Bas Rutten is a HELL of a commentator, charismatic, knowledge is amazing… any organization would be blessed to have him as an employee. Same goes for Trigg aswell… And the same can be said about Couture, Rogan, and Goldberg…

Wow, what a joke this guy is and his regrets were only that he gave MMA airtime, not what he said. This guy is all business all the time and does not have a fan’s perspective in mind like a Joe Rogan would. Anyone who is for MORE scarcity of the best fights and affectionately calls events “an entrepreneurial snowflake” has been drinking too much boxing Kool-Aid.
Thankfully he will have nothing to do with MMA as he’s already dug his grave before the first HBO show even airs. See you in the rearview Jim!

You guys are stupid, if you hate this dude so much then WHY in the world do you care what his opinion is? So what he bashes mma, you guys make the sport look worse than him by being fans and sounding so deranged that you wish death on his family. Being a fan of sound mind I for one am glad that you guys don’t have public appeal cause you sound like dumb kids. I also don’t give two shits what lampley likes or dislikes, why waste my energy on a douche like that?

I told ya’ll that Collin Cowherd gave props to MMA. He didn’t go all out, probably out of respect for Lampley, but he usually howls about how popular it is and more importantly on how popular it will become. He gets it and he slams others who don’t, even ESPN. Props back to you Collin!!!

Dude, fuck these guys. They’re all idiots. “If boxing had mma’s leadership, it’d be a first round knockout.” BULLSHIT! The reason mma is better and will always be better is that possibility OF a first round knockout. Biggest even boxing’s had in years, and what do we get? Split decision. Way to go, assholes.

I watch the IFL sometimes and agree the talent level is not the same. They are trying to develop this team fighting concept. I would look to boxing as the model and outside of the Olympics, you don’t have team boxing. You never know- the IFL could stand on its own someday. More likely it will fold up like the many non-NFL football leagues. I give it a 40-60 chance.

Ha, but he’ll probably duck out when the time comes like Tito did on his boxing match with Dana. I would put him up against a top contender so there is no issue of the belt. And hey, if the guy wins, offer him a contract. What’s not to like?

I dont watch the IFL but am a HUGE GIGANTIC Bas Rutten fan. I heard a great interview with him as to why he became a part of it. His keys points were that the fighters have yearly salaries so even if injured they are still paid. The fighters have medical insurance for themselves and their families, think Josh Haynes and Rampage. The fighters are usually up and comers who get almost a dedicated TUF style training except they get to live in their own houses! All of these points Rich Franklin brought up in a recent interview about the UFC. He said he is well taken care of, but that all the UFC does is pay. Unlike say the NFL or NBA, no whirpools after the fight, no dedicated trainers to care for you, no med insurance, no training facilities, etc. The fighters pay it all. He said he would like to see one day where the UFC has a pension, insurance, medical facilities, dedicated doctors to treat and research MMA injuries, etc.

If this ever happened it would just fuel the Boxing vs MMA fire. Both sports CAN and SHOULD co-exist. This would be one of those trainwrecks you just can’t turn away from.
My hope is that MMA can learn from boxing and eventually boxing will clean up its act to stay competitive. That would be a win-win for all fans.
