UFC Quick Quote: Andrei Arlovski is happy
''... I cannot win all my fights by knockout. I try to be a smart fighter. I will be a smart fighter. I followed the instructions of [boxing coach Mike Garcia], and he told me to keep my distance. I probably could have been better, but honestly, I'm very happy to get the win. Right now I'm a contender for a title shot in the heavyweight ranks. I'm very happy about that.''
-- Former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski tells the Chicago Sun-Times that he is pleased with his performance -- unlike most viewers -- at UFC 70: "Nations Collide" against Fabricio Werdum, which the "Pitbull" won via unanimous decision, because it keeps him in line for a title shot.

i think it was a smart move for him. werdum is a beast on the ground and if AA wanted to win that fight that was the rigth way to do it. boring but smart

“Arlovski vs Couture” that says it all right there.

Andrei Arlovski is the man. I think he will be champ by the end of the year. I think that Randy Couture will outlast Gabriel Gonzaga and win a decision against Gonzaga in August. I see Couture beating Gonzaga in a similar fashion to the way he beat Sylvia. Couture I beleive is too smart to fall into Gonzaga’s game plan. The question is whether Arlovski would fight Couture. If they do, the fight will probably take place in December. They have trained together in the past. If Gonzaga beats Couture, then off course Arlovski would fight Gonzaga and fight Conzaga pretty similar to the way he fought Werdum; winning a decision for the title. Arlovski will have a better performance his next time out. I think the best Arlovski would be if he is half of the fighter he used to be when he was champ using his relentless striking abilities and be half the fighter he was fighting Werdum, which was fighting smart; combining those two halves he will be champion in the heavyweight division for a long time. I think it is kind of messed up the way the UFC treated him after he lost the belt; the UFC got Cro Cop to vitalize the division and it seemed they kind of lost favor with Arlovski. Arlovski represented the UFC Heavyweight division and made other organizations show some respect to the division. Now the UFC has to run back to Arlovski, since Cro Cop lost. Cro Cop will be back, but if Cro Cop wants to be champ he has to beat Arlovski for the belt. Arlovski seems focused and I can almost guarantee he will have a better outing whether his next fight is for the title or is a tune up fight before his title fight. Arlovski all the way.

Very Smart way to win. You see it happen in boxing all the time. I hate to make that comparison but it’s true. He could of pushed the pace but he played it safe. I do feel he could of knocked out Werdum, but I’m glad he didn’t go to the ground with him.

I know he still gots the edge and he’s gonna need it against Randy or anybody else he might have to fight in this stacked HW division. You can see he was playing it safe but he still has the killer Instinct.

I can’t say enough about Arlovski. I just hope Dana keeps up his side of the deal and gives him a title shot like he said, even if it wasn’t an exciting fight for some. It was smart and bottom line, he won.
p.s. Arlovski has said he would have no problem fighting Randy even if they trained together.

If everybody fights not to lose then we’ll see more fights like Machida vs Heath. Randy pointed that out when he fought big Timmy.

Who knows when or if arlovski will get the shot…obviously its gonna be gonzaga vs Couture first…im hearing Vera vs. Nog….CroCop is gonna be out of the title mix for a couple of fights from the KO, Sylvia is out for awhile with his back im assuming….CC vs Sylvia would be a good fight later to put one or the other in the mix……I think Arlovski will have to fight another fight before his title shot, as of right now it looks like Kongo…in which i think Arlovski is well rounded enough to stop Kongo in the 1st…after that the title shot goes to either Kongo or AA, or Nog and Vera…more than likely nog vera first……..I think out of all of these fights Gonzaga is the worst match for couture, then Nog, then AA……..I think AA will pose a big problem for both Nog and Gonzaga though…..Randy has 3 more fights on his contract then he retires im sure…i would love to see him retire with the belt, but he has his work cut out for him….each of these guys that i mentioned poses different problems for others, i can definately see the hw title switching hands a lot with the next 2 years

dana white said if arlovski beat werdum he would get the winner or couture vs. gonzaga so there is no need to specualte arlovski’s next opponent, we already know its a title shot

Spida is right! thats the way it’s goin down as it should. I take RC over Gonzaga…I hope, and RC/AA I’m torn

I love AA and I still do. But I sure missed that agressive approach. That’s what made him AA, right?
by LUKE on Apr 27, 2007 1:22 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Dana also said after Franklin tuned in Jmac that he would get at title shot…. now his is warming up still against Kampman. Couture proved that he will beat down guys who just fight to win. Gonzaga/AA or anyone else is gonna have to be very aggressive against Couture or else he will grind em to meat.
If blame is to be assigned that the fight was boring attach it to Werdum, he couldn’t execute his game plan, and lying on your back hoping AA jumps on for a ride wasn’t a strategy it was b/s. AA unfortunately didn’t fight for the tko, and he hurt Werdum a couple of times.

wasnt Swick supposed to get a shot after his fight with Loiseua….im just saying…..they apparently didnt give it to him becuase the fight was lackluster……no one likes to stay on the shelf that long anyway….i think it would be in arlovskis best interest to get another fight under his belt….

I hope this guy gets knocked out. His glass chin needs to be exposed.

dana never said swick would get a title shot, he just said the fight with david l. was for the #1 contender spot, then a lot changed because rich lost and the tuf winner lutter had to have his shot, also i never heard dana say after franklin beat jmac he would get a rematch with silva, i actually remember franklin saying he wanted another fight or two, that he wanted to work his way back up the latter…but dana white straight up said if arlovski won he would get the title shot in his next fight, so i’m gonna say these are all different circumstances and i believe dana white is gonna give arlovski the shot at the winner of 74

he will probably have a “tune-up” on the same card that gonzaga and couture fight….although will all the upsets nowadays no fighter is safe no matter who they fight….i can see arlovski maybe fighting heath herring

it’s going to be Gonzaga-Arlovski, no matter how much i want it to be Couture but you guys are not seeing what Gonzaga is about. Couture is still going to cause damage in the ranks, though. can’t wait.

In the end a win is a win. But the fans want action.
by DiscussUFC.com on Apr 27, 2007 3:00 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I think too many fans are getting too impatient with the fighters. Its a competitions so the whole point is to win. I agree with Arlovski’s strategy completely. He got himself ahead in points and put his opponent in a position where he was the one who had to make something happen. No use ruining your lead just because the other guy doesnt feel like earning it.

Yellow card system is a must. This loser is the sole reason.

I don’t agree AA is a looser.
I do agree the yellow cards are a good idea. The only problem I see with that is that UFC has to pay the fighters a bit better so that 10% of their take actually means something.

Arlovski was winning. Why should he be taking risks? The guy who is behind should be the one pushing the pace no?
Besides, AA’s biggest strength is counter punching. He is at his best against people that attack him. If he is winning and the other person isn’t attacking… why is it AA’s fault if the other guy is too scared to come close?

I was watching a documentary with Bisping and it showed you behiubd the scenes of UFC66 and Joe Silva was talking to all the fighters saying if you get fight of the night or best finishes you get a bonus, so i don’t know why fighters still and try for the decision.

I agree with you on everything except the worst match up for Randy is Vera(Randys own words). WE haven’t seen Veras wrestling ability ,but Randy has and he says he has great wrestling skills.

Loving the boys jumping back on the AA bandwagon after you guys wrote him off after two losses. His previous two fights show you nothing more then everybody already knew he is still and has always been a great fighter. The HW division looks great finally and can’t wait to see who’s knocking at the door for the belt after the winner is crowned from RC/GG vs. AA

aa is gonna do fine, no matter who he fights,—-great takedown defense, great standup. why go to the ground when your best standing up and everyone wants you standing anyways to see a potential knockout.

AA is still a great fighter. Everyone saw that he almost had the ko in the first round against werdum. Gonzaga is on his high horse now, and will knowingly get hurt against Couture. AA cannot always finish the highlight reel with a vicious ko. CC and AA would be a great standup fight. Everyone forgets that AA is a master in the art of sambo.
